Of write-ins and other revelations from the election
T
his week’s commentary has a bit of a caveat, as it is being written for a standard deadline. There might be some further developments regarding the recent Alabama election for U.S. Senator before the paper is printed. One of the more stark and meaningful statistics to emerge from the race is that, as of this writing, the total number of write-in votes (approximately 22,800) is close to the difference between the vote totals between Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Roy Moore. Unlike the 2016 presidential election, when there were thirdparty candidates on the ballot, voters who were put off by the two candidates for Senate could only scribble another name in a designated blank space on a ballot as an alternative. And apparently, many writein voters are also football fans, because the individuals who received hand-written votes included Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn, and Bart Starr. Moreover, Bear Bryant would often garner write-in votes in Alabama elections, so the, er, trend isn’t new. It might be easy to diss or dismiss a write-in vote as a waste of time and effort, but this time around, the volume of such votes indicates that thousands of Alabamians were frustrated, in a very unique way—they believe in the electoral process but were so alienated with the choice they had that their scrawled vote was basically a type of protest. Indeed, as the election results began to roll in on Tuesday night, more than one commentator noted that the write-in voters were “sending a message.” And the size of that message was said to be about seven times the usual number of write-in votes in statewide Alabama elections.

Before the advent of the accusations against him emerged, Roy Moore’s campaign had been in the catbird seat, with Doug Jones—whoever he was— designated as the token sacrificial Democrat competitor. Indeed, one pundit stated that Moore could run for any office in the state and would easily be elected. Other comments heard as the Jones win became apparent was that Moore had been a “flawed” and/or “terrible” candidate. The serious allegations against him had been front and center during the campaign, of course, and an interview with a national political commentator didn’t seem to help his image. But there were other factors as well. For one thing, Moore limited his appearances, which could have nurtured the perception among some voters that he was aloof from the campaign itself as well as the controversies; i.e., he was fully expecting to be elected in spite of the allegations and didn’t need to get out among the minions. Shades of Thomas Dewey in 1948 and Hillary Clinton in 2016. There was also the involvement of national political consultant/“strategist” Steve Bannon, who has been cited as an important cog in the relatively new “Alt-Right” movement, whatever that’s supposed to be. Bannon’s public/stage image is that of a self-assured/borderlinecocky slob, and one wonders how that played with Alabama voters.
The President and other Washington biggies seemed to reluctantly “endorse” Moore in the final days of the campaign. The Jones campaign also brought in out-of-state politicians like New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker (a presumptive 2020 Presidential candidate). And a late-in-the-campaign television commercial, in which Moore took on his detractors and talked of his plans for his tenure in Washington, ended with the judge turning his head to another camera, and announcing with a big grin, “I can’t wait!” The question is, how many voters might have interpreted that grin as a leer? We’ve already been hearing commentaries about what kind of senator Doug Jones will be—is he going to be a liberal or a “Blue Dog” Democrat, who normally votes more independent of the party line and/or more conservatively? Folks in this area have seen that kind of Democrat before— former U.S. Representative Bobby Bright was once rated as having the second-most independent voting record in the House (for example, he voted against Obamacare). But Bright was elected in 2008 via the Obama phenomenon, and was swept out two years later. And to his credit, Doug Jones seems to have kept the beckoning tentacles of national Democrats and Republicans at arm’s length post-election, utilizing the term “center” and affirming that he plans on voting on what best benefits the people of Alabama. That’s the right thing to say at this point in time, but we’ll just have to see. The percentage by which Jones won doesn’t mean his election was a mandate. problem is, one staff member has a habit of writing a “manuscript” (heavy sarcasm) on the inside of every card, whether or not she personally knows the individual. This leaves little space for anyone else. I have jokingly asked the young lady to please be conscious of space, but she doesn’t get it. Salvation Army hoping to make up for lost days in campaign By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
The Salvation Army has lost three days for this year’s Red Kettle Campaign. “We lost two days to the snow two weeks ago,” Salvation Army’s Tabatha Glassburn said. “Saturdays are our biggest days. We lost one with the snow. And we will not be ringing Christmas Eve because it falls on a Sunday.” In addition to losing three days, Glassburn says they still need volunteers to staff the kettles. “We still need bell ringers Cliff Williams / The Outlook today (Friday) and tomorrow William Reaves of Alexander City rings the bell for the Salvation Army at Walmart (Saturday),” Glassburn said. “If people want to volunteer Thursday. his is the original Christmas story from the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke, as told in the King James Bible: “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O’Hanlon 115 West Ninety Fifth Street Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists
as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa
Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world, which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A Christmas dream inspired by Irving & Bing
I
dream of a “White Christmas” this year. I speak of the Irving Berlin classic made famous by Bing Crosby — a sweet, wistful song that holds more power over me with each passing year. According to CBS News, many speculate that Berlin was inspired to write the song in the late 1930s, while working on a movie in Beverly Hills and feeling homesick for his family in New York. The holiday season was especially challenging for him. His three-week-old son had died on Christmas 1928. Berlin visited his grave every Christmas, and the sadness of his son’s death also influenced the song. Berlin had set the halffinished song aside for a few years before finishing it during the Christmas season of 1940 or 1941. Only 54 words, it would become a quintessentially American song - one that, to me, celebrates the American civility, prosperity and opportunity that Berlin was blessed to experience. According to PBS.org, Berlin’s family fled to America from Russia when he was 5 to escape persecution of Jews. His family “arrived in New York in 1893, settling in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Compelled by poverty to work rather than attending school, Berlin made money by singing on streetcorners and later secured a job as a singing waiter at the Pelham Cafe. During this time, he also began writing songs of his own …” Berlin would go on to

produce “an outpouring of ballads, dance numbers, novelty tunes and love songs that defined American popular song for much of the (20th) century,” says the Songwriters Hall of Fame. “Irving Berlin has no place in American music — he is American music,” composer Jerome Kern said. In any event, “White Christmas” offers a blend of melancholy and hopefulness, expressing a longing for snowblanketed Christmases when “treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow” and hope that our days will be “merry and bright.” The song premiered on Crosby’s radio show in December 1941, just 18 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, a highly emotional time for America. Eight months later, Crosby was featured singing the song in the movie “Holiday Inn.” However, critics “didn’t take much notice” of the song at first, according to Jody Rosen, author of “White Christmas: the Story of an American Song.” She told CBS News that it wasn’t until Armed Forces Radio began to play the song that it struck a chord. “It was 1942, the first winter that American troops had spent overseas,” she said. “So, these images of ... snowy American,
New Englandy Christmas really spoke to the longing, nostalgia and homesickness of the troops for their homeland and for the sweethearts and wives and mothers and fathers they’d left behind.” And it spoke to a common longing for the civility, unity, sacrifice and hopefulness that all Americans were experiencing at that time. Well, “White Christmas” is just as relevant now as it ever was — maybe more so. Its sweet, wistful melody and lyrics make me long for renewed civility, unity, sacrifice and hopefulness — the same things, I believe, all Americans are longing for. “We are not enemies, but friends,” said President Abraham Lincoln in his first inaugural address, whose message still resonates in 2017. “We must not be enemies,” Lincoln said. “Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” Civility, unity, sacrifice and hopefulness — a great coming together. M. Russell Library is offering computer classes in 2018. One program is for beginners, with a separate advanced program for individuals seeking to move beyond the basics. The advanced class is aimed at anyone wanting to improve their skill set and/or enhance their employment opportunities. The basic classes will begin January 16, 2018, and the advanced classes will begin January 18, 2018; each session will last approximately one hour (3 p.m. to 4 p.m.) and will meet for four straight weeks. This is the best year we’ve had in many moons,” Russell said. “Those of you have done the work here, you all are the ones who make this place work. All full time employees here at Russell Lands will be receiving a check for $500.” Prior to Russell’s announcement, Lamberth thanked everyone for coming out to the party, expressing how much the company loved holding this event for residents and employees to close out the year, while Holliday explained some of the reasoning behind why Russell Lands was able to offer this bonus to its employees. “We had a good year, a strong economy and with the passage of the new tax plan, we decided to give
everybody a $500 bonus,” he said. With approximately 500 full time employees on the Russell Lands staff, this bonus adds up to roughly $250,000 being given to these hard-working individuals. Following the announcement, party guests indulged themselves in more of the food, took a carriage ride around the stables area and let their children spend a moment visiting with Santa, adding to the general air of excitement and happiness. “It makes me feel fortunate to be able to do this,” Russell said after the announcement. “I look back to my grandfather, because without his vision of creating a recreation area near the lake, we would not be here today. It’s a great blessing and it makes us all feel good. I hope that we are able to continue this.”

Salvation Salvation Army receives from the United Way. All the money donated through the Red Kettle Campaign stays local, some of which services the community food pantry located at the Alexander City store. It also helps people in financial crisis keep their utilities on and works to prevent homelessness in the area. The funds also help the Salvation Army host Camp
Hidden Lake in Lexington, Mississippi free for children and local disaster outreach. The Alexander City location of the Salvation Army Service Center oversees and coordinates the Salvation Army’s efforts in Tallapoosa, Coosa, Chambers and Randolph counties. Volunteers ringing the bell at the kettle enjoy it. “I like it,” William Reaves of Alexander City said. “It helps get me out of the house
and active.” “It’s one the funnest things you can do,” Joy Garrett said. “You get to hear some of the neatest stories.” But it is not just volunteers for ringing the bell that the Salvation Army needs. “We need people to volunteer to get the kettle out,” Glassburn said. “But we also need people to be generous and put donations in kettle.”

2017 All-Area Volleyball Team Player of the Year
A’niah Ford is dominating force By LIZI ARBOGAST Sports Editor
The thing that really stood out to Benjamin Russell coach Pam Robinson about her No. 1 outside hitter wasn’t A’niah Ford’s ability to seemingly jump out of the gym or her staggering 323 kills, but it was Ford’s volleyball development. “Just watching her grow from the time she started volleyball in the ninth grade where we tried her out as a setter,” Robinson said. “She always worked hard, and her biggest thing was getting mad at herself if she missed a couple. To watch a kid improve consistently to where right now we’re talking about her possibly signing somewhere to play at the next level is great.” All of Ford’s talents were a recipe for her success this season, and she is the Outlook Volleyball Player of the Year. “I just love volleyball, and I like the game as far as how fast it goes,” Ford said. “You’re always moving, and it works on your quickness. It’s just a lot of fun for me.” In 40 matches this season, Ford had 10 double-digit kill performances and she even had a few where she smacked more than 20 in a match. One reason Ford has found so much success is because she’s played at nearly every position on the court. As a ninth-grader for the Wildcats, she started out as a setter, and Robinson said she saw glimpses of potential. “There would be times when you’d go, ‘Man, she

Turner takes Generals from 0 to 60 By LIZI ARBOGAST Sports Editor
“To watch a kid improve consistently to where right now we’re talking about her possibly signing somewhere to play at the next level is great.” — Pam Robinson Benjamin Russell coach is going to be so good,’ but there was still a little bit of that awkwardness there,” Robinson said. “Then we put her in the middle as a 10th-grader because she just had a great nose for the ball.” As a junior, Ford was moved to her current position of outside hitter, and after the departure of Abby Martin, who didn’t play this season, Ford became the go-to hitter this season. “I had to know different timing for each position because of where the ball is located and how different the positions are,” Ford said. “But it helped me a lot with knowing where to put the ball on the court and getting my
feet set to get a kill right.” Ford verbally committed to play volleyball at Southern Union State Community College on Wednesday and is planning to sign in February. According to Robinson, the sky is the limit for Ford at the next level. “The thing I told the coaches is she’s not as good as she’s going to be,” Robinson said. “She’s still going to get better. In my 30 years of coaching, I’ve had probably two girls that could hang in the air, and one of them is A’niah. If you’re looking at pure height, you would look over A’niah, but she plays much taller than 5-foot-6.”
Expectations weren’t exactly high for Horseshoe Bend’s volleyball team. Not only were the Generals extremely young, they were also working under the direction of first-year head coach Julie Turner. Despite all the challenges, Turner made people pay attention to the Generals as they got better and better every game of the year. They went on to win the area championship, advance to the sub regional and finish with a 22-7 overall record. Turner is the Outlook Volleyball Coach of the Year. “There were so many challenges,” Turner said. “You don’t really know that much about girls until you work with them in that capacity, especially since I have (sons). You have to learn their moods, their attitudes and how to work with them. The biggest challenge was our youth. Our team was so young, you really didn’t know going into the season how they were going to act.” Turner’s Generals had just one senior, two juniors and one sophomore. The other five on the roster were all freshmen, many of whom had little to no volleyball experience. But Turner doesn’t credit herself with their success; she said that lies with the girls completely. “The girls really stepped up and accepted the roles they were given,” she said. “A lot of them were not
starters, but when I talked to the girls about learning to accept their roles, they really blossomed from there. During the first few games, I thought it was going to be a long year, but they just got that team chemistry.” Another thing that put Horseshoe Bend in a strong position was its increased mental toughness throughout the year. With so many youngsters on the team, it would’ve been easy for the them to fall apart after a few miscues or losses. But Turner preached mental toughness throughout the season and learning from mistakes rather than dwelling on them. “Over the course of the season, their mental toughness really blossomed,” Turner said. “The first game of the year, especially my ninth-graders, would be so nervous, but by the end of the year, you could see they’ve got this. They learned how to work through whatever obstacles they had early on.” While there were plenty of good memories to choose from in Turner’s first season at the helm, there was one match in particular she thought set the tone for the rest of the season. “I think our biggest win of the year for our girls was when we beat Elmore County at home,” Turner said. “That kind of set the stage. We had lost a game or two, but then when we beat them at home, a team that was really good and went on to the state tournament, that was a really big win and a big moment in the whole season.”

As just a junior, Wood was an obvious force for the young General squad. She was constantly the team’s go-to hitter and had not only power but a smarts for placing the ball well. “She’s really good on the front line, and she was just a really great hitter that we could always count on,” Horseshoe Bend coach Julie Turner said.
By far the leader of the Wildcat defense, Stowes racked up 142 digs this season. “She has good quickness and is a good passer, and she brought some power as far as attacking from the backcourt,” Benjamin Russell coach Pam Robinson said. “Tayla is a natural-born leader, and she works hard and is very competitive. She wants to win and be successful.”
Middle hitter: Shae Suttles, Central Coosa
Outside hitter: Quanesha Presley, Dadeville
Suttles was an integral part of the Central Coosa offense, leading the team with 102 kills and 55 blocks. She also contributed with a strong serve, netting 20 aces. “I looked at Shae as being an all-around player, blocking for both the outside and the middle, and she really brought a lot to the table,” Coosa coach Doris Gamble said.
Despite being a three-sport athlete, Presley seems to shine in all three of them. She was a dominant outside hitter for the Tigers, who advanced the furthest in the area in the sub regional, and she recently signed to play at Southern Union State Community College. “Quanesha knows how to place the ball, and she was very aggressive with it,” Dadeville coach Felicia Edwards said. “She knew when to really hit it and when to tip the ball.”
Athlete: Cheyanna Howard, Horseshoe Bend
Setter: India Miller, Dadeville Miller and Amaya Hatcher split time as the Tigers’ 1-2 punch at setter, and while Miller did a nice job setting up her talented hitters, she also had quite a few kills of her own. “India is a versatile player, and she’s hard working,” Dadeville coach Felicia Edwards said. “She does a great job setting, and she can get the ball to the hitters well.”
The lone senior on the Generals’ squad, Howard was an all-around player this season. She was the only Horseshoe Bend player to play all six positions. “Being a leader and playing that role was a big influence, especially for our younger girls,” Horseshoe Bend coach Julie Turner said. “She really took them under their wing, and it’s going to be really hard to replace her.”

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has announced an increased presence of State Troopers on the highways over the holidays, and local law enforcement officials said they too are preparing and shared some dos and don’ts for the road. Local law enforcement leaders said they too will be on the roads making sure that residents are obeying traffic laws. “One of the things we really look for is drunk driving,” said Dadeville Police Department Chief David Barbour. But it was not the only thing he said they watch for, adding aggressive driving and driving without seatbelts to the list. Alexander City Police Department’s Chief Jay Turner said there would be extra patrols “for possibly impaired driving,” over the holidays. In addition to that, Turner said that another thing that can help motorists stay safe is to slow down and plan ahead. “We are all in a rush, but just allow yourself a little extra time so that there is no need to use excessive speed to get to your destination on time,” Turner said. “Speed not only reduces a driver’s reaction time, but it increases the distance needed to safely stop your vehicle. So leave early, slow down and arrive safely.” Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said his office would maintain
current patrols, and would be available to assist, “in any way we can.” Abbett emphasized the need to travel with a plan in mind and said to preplan the trip, the route and to stay in contact with friends and family about time frames of departure and arrival. “Be defensive while driving any time you’re behind the wheel,” said Abbett. “Plan ahead and always be aware of the conditions, such as weather, lighting and the traffic around you.” He also restated the staples of safe driving, stating what drivers should already be doing behind the wheel. “Don’t drink and drive, drive safely and buckle up for safety,” Abbett said. “Obey the traffic laws, if you are going to drink have a designated driver.” ALEA was provided grant funding from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), which will enable ALEA to conduct a seasonal safety initiative and provide additional Trooper shifts. Officials announced that through midnight Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, Troopers will heighten enforcement. “Please obey speed limits, insist everyone in the vehicle buckle up and/ or use child-restraint systems, avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, avoid driving while texting and distracted in other ways, and avoid following too closely,” said ALEA Public information Officer Jesse Thornton. “These driving behaviors are among the most deadly.”

Tallassee Christmas parade going strong 50 years later By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer
Christmas in Tallassee is special time of year, a time to be celebrated. It was 50 years ago that Tallassee celebrated the inaugural Christmas Parade. The parade is one of the most attended and celebrated Christmas traditions in the small city. This year, the parade had over 70 participants and well over 2,000 spectators. Over the years, the parade has seen many changes. From the parade route to the floats themselves, but one thing remained the same – Ronald Brantley. Brantley built
his first float for Lurleen Wallace in 1967 and the rest is history. That same year, Brantley helped planned the Tallassee Christmas Parade. “That first Christmas parade was a big one; it started at the football field and went to the East Tallassee Church of Christ,” said Brantley. “That was fifty years ago this past parade if my math is correct.” Brantley built that year’s winning float. It was float for the high school that carried the slogan “The Future Belongs to the Educated.” The float depicted a globe topped with a mortar board. Becky Gauntt and Mike

Tapley, clad in caps and gowns, represented the school on the float. Thanks to Brantley, the students won $100 for their innovative float. Brantley also built Santa’s float that year, a tradition he has carried on for 50 years and counting. Today, Brantley continues this tradition with no intention of slowing down anytime soon. And while the prize money dried up years ago, Brantley still puts his all into crafting the seasonal floats that he hopes will bring joy so many. “It has been fifty years of work, fifty years of fun and we always hope it doesn’t rain,” he said.
