Tallassee teen charged with murder

Malik Johnson, 18, of Tallassee is being held in Elmore County Jail on charges of murder and robbery in the Sunday death of Stephvon Adams, 26, also of Tallassee. Johnson was arrested Monday night after Adams’ body was found in the road near the intersection of

New Quarters and Taylor Roads near Tallassee. “When deputies found Mr. Adams, it appeared that he had several gunshot wounds to the upper torso,” Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said Monday morning. “There was also a good amount of blood in the road and it was unclear whether he had been struck or that was from the gunshots.”

Franklin said the only thing found on Adams was a set of keys in his pockets, which turned out to be crucial to his identification when at about 10 a.m. authorities received a call that a vehicle was partially blocking the roadway near the Friendship community, approximately five miles from the original scene. Noticing that the vehicle in the roadway was a Jeep

and that the keys found in Adams’ pocket were Jeep keys, deputies tried to pop the trunk with the key’s remote and, according to Franklin, “it popped right open. He said Adams then tried to exit the car and stumbled in front of it. Johnson said he slid across the console, took control of the car and ran over Adams multiple times.” Franklin said the argument between Johnson and Adams focused around money and drugs. He said Johnson’s charges included robbery because he allegedly took money and a cell phone from the victim. Johnson is a former Tallassee High School basketball star.

for the lessons his children have learned through recreational sports. “I’m grateful for the life lessons that my daughter learned over here,” he said. Isebell is a friend and supporter of Mayor Johnny Hammock and believes in Hammock’s campaign platform. “When the mayor talked to me months ago about running for mayor, he told me about his platform,” he said. “I told him that I thought he would make a great mayor for the town and I would support him anyway that I could.” During Hammock’s campaign, he promised to work to unite Tallassee as one city. “One of his (Hammock’s) main goals was to bring

Tallassee together,” Isebell said. “We’re not East Tallassee, we’re not Carrville, we’re not Friendship, we’re Tallassee.” According to Isebell, he knew the need for a new roof was there so he felt led to fulfill that need, not only for his children, but also for all the children who used the softball complex. “My daughter played softball here when she was 10 and her travel ball team still practices over here sometimes,” Isebell said. “I have known that it needs a roof and it’s just something that we felt led to do.” Tryouts for the 2017 softball season begin in February and thanks to Apex roofing, the Tallassee Recreation Board is one step closer to opening day.

when Thomas knocked in the door, jumped on top of the victim and carried her out by the neck. Thomas has a laundry list of prior convictions for theft, burglary, domestic violence and assault. With that history Fifth Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Duerr asked that Thomas be sentenced outside of the guidelines for the crimes under the habitual offender status, an argument Assistant District Attorney Mike Weldon presented to Young Monday. “He has a track record,” Weldon said. “He has done nothing but crime after crime after crime. At this point, I don’t know if he can do anything but commit another crime.”

At the Dec. 5 trial, a jury took 17 minutes to find Thomas guilty where the victim testified, a video showing the encounter was shown and a U.S. Marshall who help apprehend Thomas testified. The video showed Thomas busting through a door of a Washington Boulevard home in Tallassee May 3 of this year, moving hastily across the room to a victim known to Thomas before pinning her to the couch, telling he was going to take her and kill her and then taking the victim from the residence by the neck with her feet dangling in the air. The second part of the video shows the victim returning to the home wearing only the t-shirt she was wearing when

abducted, unclothed from the waist down. Thomas was arrested by U.S. Marshals May 5 in Centreville and transported to the Bibb County Jail near Tuscaloosa without incident but did ask U.S. Marshal Glen Heritage about one charge – domestic violence strangulation. “He asked me what it was,” Heritage testified at trial. “I told him and he stated ‘I should have killed the bitch.’” Young sentenced Thomas to life in prison on the burglary charge and 20 years each on the kidnapping and domestic violence strangulation charges, all to be served consecutively meaning Thomas will likely live the rest of life in prison.

6586. Later in week, Tallassee Police made an arrest in a rash of burglaries in the East Tallassee area. Tallassee Police say 20-year-old Yancey Sawyer Munsch of Tallassee was arrested Wednesday in connection with the recent crimes. According to court records, Munsch was arrested for first-degree theft of property, third-

degree burglary and breaking and entering a vehicle. These incidents occurred between Dec. 2 and Dec. 4 in the areas of North Johnson Street and Hall Farm Road, which is located near Herron’s Crossroads. According to TPD, Munsch burglarized sheds and a vehicle in the vicinity. Police believe the suspects did not know the victims.

Donn Eisele: Unique historical figure, unique memoirs N

ot surprisingly, this one has a connection to last week’s memorial commentary on John Glenn. I figured it would be appropriate to go ahead and look at a new quasiautobiography by another (deceased) astronaut from the same historic era, but the reasoning is kind of curious. Time was, almost any American who was famous was, ideally, expected to epitomize morality, family values, truth, justice and the American Way (John Glenn being exemplary). Back in the day, any deviation from such an image would end up being splashed across the pages of primeval tell-all periodicals like ‘Confidential.’ The evolution of journalism has gotten to the point that these days there are individuals and even so-called “families” who are “celebrities” or “famous” not because of their accomplishments, but

And as noted in the Dec. 14 column, the first seven U.S. astronauts were pronounced to be instant heroes before the first one of them had flown into outer space. They were presented as patriotic and virtuous family men, and their wives and children were also subjected to enthusiastic public scrutiny. Six of them would fly alone into the void, and the seventh, Deke Slayton, was supervisor of the astronauts for a number of years before finally getting into space as a crew member for the ApolloSoyuz project. Later astronauts were famous for specific accomplishments, of course.

for Apollo 7, the first successful manned Apollo mission. The flight was delayed for almost two years following the tragic fire that killed the crew of Apollo 1. After several unmanned Apollo missions to check out new or revised systems, Apollo 7 blasted off on Oct. 11, 1968. The first flights of spacecraft in the earlier Mercury and Gemini programs had been brief, but Apollo 7’s shakedown cruise orbited the earth for 11 days, the approximate length of a mission to the Moon. Eisele got divorced soon after his return and married a woman he’d fallen in love with while training for his mission. He was compelled to resign from the astronaut corps, and

later worked with the Peace Corps in Thailand. He died from a heart attack in Japan at the age of 57. The Apollo 7 veteran had begun to write his memoirs, but assorted pages and drafts languished in a closet until they were discovered by veteran space writer Francis French (who is also the director of education at the San Diego Air and Space Museum). With the authorization of Eisele’s widow, French assembled the manuscripts in a chronological and readable format. The result, “Apollo Pilot: The Memoir of Astronaut Donn Eisele,” (University of Nebraska Press) is an interesting addition to the written chronicles of America’s Moon landing program. And it’s to French’s credit that he concentrated on organizing Eisele’s thoughts. The memoir doesn’t read like French inserted explanations or definitions himself in his editing duties (and if

a reader has to look for additional information himself/herself, such research isn’t a bad thing). Eisele is fairly thorough in describing his only flight into outer space, explaining his duties and technical tasks in an easyto-understand manner. The allusions to the astronauts’ tomcatting around are unvarnished, but Eisele doesn’t name names and doesn’t cite his own indiscretions (but somehow a reader senses that Eisele is including himself in certain anecdotes). If he had expanded his work to a full-blown/more-detailed monograph, he would have been expected, right or wrong, to address this issue in more detail due to the aforementioned so-called “notoriety” factor associated with his legacy. It’s interesting to compare “Apollo Pilot” (and what it might have been if Eisele had completed his work) to “The All-American Boys,” by fellow Apollo

7 crew member Walt Cunningham. First published in 1977 as one of the earliest astronaut autobiographies (and revised and updated in 2009), Cunningham’s chronicle also goes behind the scenes about the training and flight of the first Apollo mission and also addresses peccadilloes by the spacemen. Cunningham discusses Eisele’s status as the first divorced astronaut in more detail, but rightfully cites how many other marriages were shaky and how most of those ultimately failed, as well. “Apollo Pilot” is a brief and intriguing look at a space voyager whose historical status may be a bit misplaced. ack some months ago, I wrote a story about getting out my daddy’s boat and restoring a 1961 Mercury motor that had been stored for many years. I got Mr. Jack Hudson who knows more about Mercury motors than anyone to restore this motor. Some months later and after hunting and finding parts from all around the country, Jack said the motor was running. At the time the water was at an all-time low because this area just wasn’t getting any rain. This was going to be a sentimental trip and I talked about it for years but never took the trip. Both daddy and Uncle Bill are now dead and I’ve gotten old and stiff. I keep remembering what Mark Twain said, “the trouble with men over 70 is they start acting their age.” I don’t think you can accuse me of this because I’m over 10 years past the 70 mark. I have a good life preserver and a son that is willing to help me fulfill most of my dreams. We finally got some rain but the rain was fol-

Down to the river behind AES we went on a very cloudy and cold day. I could picture my daddy and Uncle Bill ready to go as we put the boat in. I crawled in and had a seat near the front of the boat and my son crawled by me to the motor. He pulled on the crank cord once, then put the choke on and pulled again, it sputtered and he flipped the choke to off. One more time he pulled the crank cord and the little six horsepower motor fired off and ran like a sewing machine. The first part of the trip is tricky because we had to go through the back of the shoals and into smooth water. The little

boat glided through like a trained saddle horse. The river opened and we were on our way. By being up front I was the guide trying to keep us away from stumps and shallow water. At the same time, I was taking in the sights of the beautiful Tallapoosa with its mosscovered trees hanging over the river. We saw ducks floating on the water and we scared up some geese that flew right over our heads. As we neared Euphabee Creek I couldn’t help but think of old Tallassee, our first town, and Oceola the great Seminole Indian Chief that was born just a short distance up the Euphabee Creek. A friend of ours was going down the river in a canoe just minutes ahead of us and saw a coyote chase a deer into the river where the deer made its getaway by crossing the river and darting into the woods on the east side. Below the creek, we came upon Fort Decatur which was headed by one time Governor of Tennessee John Sevier, who by the

way died and was buried there until his body was claimed and carried to Knoxville and buried on the capital grounds. Unless you know what you are looking for you’d never recognize this historic spot from the river. From the boat landing below AES all the way to O’Daniel Bridge is almost too beautiful to describe. With a little imagination, you can picture the places the Indians would put their boats in, you can see the huge bluffs and the flat banks where women came down for water. The big city of Tukabatchee just out of sight as we rode by. There’s a cable that crosses underneath the water and some say a ferry crossed there and where was the covered bridge built by Horace King and mentioned in history books? Inside the Statehouse By Steve Flowers

State should see an interesting new year of gubernatorial politics

istorically speaking, Alabamians have been more interested in the governor’s race than presidential politics. For years, from 1876 to 1964, we were a totally Democratic state, more so out of tradition than philosophically. The hatred for the radical Republican Reconstruction shackles invoked on the South made an indelible mark on white southern voters. It was so instilled, that there are a good many stories told throughout the South where a dying grandfather would gather his children and grandchildren around his deathbed and gaspingly admonish them, “Two things I’m gonna tell y’all before I die – don’t ever sell the family farm and don’t ever vote for a damn Republican.” That all changed in November of 1964. Barry Goldwater and the Republicans became the party of segregation and the white southern voter fled the Democratic Party en mass. As the fall election of 1964 approached, the talk in the old country stores around Alabama was that a good many good old boys were going to vote straight Republican even if their daddies did turn over in their graves. Well folks, there were a good many papas turning over in their graves all over the South. The entire South changed parties on that day 52 years ago. Since we were a solid Democratic state for 90 years, we really had no say in the presidential selection process. We are in the same position today, being a solid Republican state. Therefore, it makes sense that we would have more interest in gubernatorial politics than presidential rhetoric because we have much more of a say in that contest. In addition, all of our other offices are up for election in the race for governor year, including all 67 sheriffs, all 140 members of the legislature, and all other constitutional offices such as attorney general, agriculture commissioner, secretary of state and treasurer. Indeed, for most of our past there were more votes cast in the Democratic Primary for Governor of Alabama than in a presidential contest. Today, our voting proclivity runs more along the national percentage. We also have the vsame tendency to vote more against someone than for someone. George Wallace used to always say give me a good boogeyman to run against. Well, lest you forget Hillary Clinton was the best boogeyman to vilify before Barack Obama. He was the hated villain for an eight year interlude. Now Bill and Hillary have taken back their rightful place as the face of the despised national Democratic Party among white southerners. Therefore, as this year began, I thought it would be a yawner, a sleeper year for good old Alabama politics. However, we have had some good theater. Not to be outdone by the colorful campaign of Donald Trump, who was a continuous circus or vaudeville act, our local Alabama characters have put on quite a show. It began with the ethics trial of former House Speaker Mike Hubbard, which was a lengthy, detailed, fully vetted and well run process. Hubbard was found guilty by a Lee County jury, which he represented in the legislature. He will ultimately go to jail, a state prison, which is woefully overcrowded and dangerous. While the Hubbard story was anticipated and expected, the saga of good ole Dr. Robert Bentley has remained in the news continuously throughout the entire year. His former buddy, Spencer Collier, has filed a lawsuit against the Governor and his girlfriend. Now comes a second suit and revelations by his former Security Chief Ray Lewis which is juicier and adds to and confirms Collier’s story. This will probably keep the salacious story alive for another year or more. Bentley has been relegated to an irrelevant punch line or joke. He would not have been so adversely ridiculed if he had not been perceived as a family values man, churchman, retired doctor and looked like an old grandfather. There is an old saying in politics that if you ride a white horse you better not get mud on it because it shows up. Another truism is sex sells. Ain’t Alabama politics fun? Wow – what a year! Now we will get ready for the 2018 gubernatorial year, and to top it off, we have also got an open Senate seat up for grabs. We will have a governor’s race and an open U.S. Senate race in the same year. Those races have begun. Since winning the Republican primary is tantamount to election in Alabama, we elect a new governor and new U.S. Senator in June of 2018, which is less than 18 months from now. See you next week. t’s been many years ago now, but once upon a time, I taught at Zion Chapel High School in Jack, Alabama. We had a great 1A (now 2A) school. As I look back on those years, the only adjective I can use to describe the place is “sweet.” While the band director job had been notoriously unstable, the faculty was filled with veteran teachers, many of whom had spent their entire careers there. One of my co-workers once said, “we’re closer than family,” but added with a warning, “and that’s sometimes too close.” This proved to be true, as there were a couple of teachers

Bird I’d heard were once best friends. They did everything together. But somewhere along the way, some marriages broke up and some harsh words were spoken and for about two decades these ladies had been on opposite ends of the faculty spectrum, with pro- and con- camps on both sides. Enter L. Wayne Vickers – now Superintendent of Alabaster City Schools in Shelby County. Dr. Vickers had been in the State Department of Education in Kentucky before coming to Jack, but he immediately identified our school’s strengths and weak-

nesses and set us on a new path. For Christmas his first year, he announced that we would be having dinner on the ground, church style, at the home of our secretary/bookkeeper. The faculty grumbled aloud at the meeting, as Dr. Vickers explained that if we wanted to be paid, we had to bring a potluck dish and dine with the faculty. After a short meeting and the dinner, we’d be paid and we could go. As that school dismissal day approached, excitement gathered as some of our staff left to prepare dining tables in our secretary’s garage. When the students were gone and the faculty made its way to her house, it was quiet at first. The home economics teacher, whose recently deceased husband had been a pastor, found

the piano right away. The ag teacher turned to a page in the hymnal. Soon, these two were harmonizing on some old gospel songs. Before long, the whole faculty was gathered around the piano singing hymns together. I even saw those old frenemies swaying back and forth as they lifted their voices in song. Something changed that day for our school and for our teachers. The food and the music brought us together. Dr. Vickers knew it would work. And I don’t know if he remembers setting up that gathering, but on this Christmas week, I am thankful for experiences like these that only come from working with great people. Easy as pie is just a phrase

ver the past few weeks, I’ve tried new things. I went crappie fishing. I cooked a drunk chicken on the grill. Heck, I even cranked up a chainsaw and cut my own wood. One would think my natural progression would have had me wrestling a bear or barking for the Yak woman this week, but that was not the case. Instead, I decided to do something easy. I donned an apron and made a pie. I’m a pretty darn good cook; however, other than brownies and Rice Crispy treats, I’d never attempted to make any other kind of dessert. When a friend gave me a handful of homegrown lemons, I knew I had to do something special with them, which is when the idea of making a homemade lemon meringue pie was hatched. Speaking of hatched, I had all the ingredients necessary, with the exception of eggs — and cornstarch – I mean, seriously, who has cornstarch in their pantry? I didn’t even know corn had starch. Anyone who has cornstarch on

hand likely has a can of Crisco on the oven and an impressive Cool Whip bowl collection in the cabinets. At this point, all I’m missing is the can of Crisco. I knew it was not going to be as easy as I’d hoped when I discovered I no longer had a glass pie plate. I used to have a couple of them, but they apparently got lost over the last couple of years. I was certain I had an aluminum pie pan somewhere, and I did, but it was out in my garden nailed to a pole. So, it was back to square one, or, better yet, one square glass dish. It wasn’t pretty, but I was going to make it work. The lemon filling was rather easy to prepare. The only puzzling aspect for me was the zesting of the lemon. I mean, it was downright Pythagorean Theorem puzzling, but after a little online tuto-

rial, I had it down. The key was not to cut into the white part of the peel. That would have made the whole baking adventure, bittersweet— pun intended. The most important element in creating an aesthetically pleasing lemon meringue pie is the meringue itself. Yes, indeed; it’s all about the cow slobber, and the cow slobber is all about the eggs. Believe it or not, I’d never separated an egg, so I had to Google. It took 44 years, but I can finally check that block. It turned out to be fairly simple process. A little piece of shell fell into one of the bowls, but fortunately I learned in Mrs. Swarthout’s high school cooking class how to fish out the tiny pieces of eggshell simply by using the larger shell. It almost acts like a magnet. It’s really simple. In fact, it’s easy as pie. Wait—Hold that thought. The instructions called for me to whip the egg whites until they became foamy, but that never happened. If I had whipped for five more minutes, I would

have been foamy at the mouth. It was a lot of work with no payoff. The recipe called for white sugar, but I used cane sugar. I don’t know if that was detrimental to the development of my cow slobber or not, but the cow slobber was not to be. Nope. My lemon pie was topped with cow slime. Pie ain’t easy, so I retract my previous statement. After a quick trip to the oven, my pie was ready. I’ll be honest; it was the most pitiful looking, meringue-missing, square pie I’ve ever laid my eyes on, but, truthfully, it tasted pretty darn good. Next time, I think I’ll skip the cow slobber altogether and just go with Cool Whip. That should make the whole process easy as pie. Besides, I could use the bowl. o! Ho! Ho! We were thrilled to have Santa join us on Saturday and he was gracious enough to stick around for a bit for photos with pets, children and adults alike! We are thankful he was able to carve out a couple of hours from his busy schedule to stop by. Thank you Santa! We also want to thank all who provided some treats and sweets for our visitors and to our staff for their hard work decorating and making our shelter that much more festive. No doubt Santa brought the spirit of Christmas with him as Allie, a wonderful dog that has been with us since May, found her forever family! That made our day to be sure! For your planning, our 2017 ‘Getting Down with the Dawgs’ Drawdown will be on Feb. 18r at the Wind Creek Entertainment Center in Wetumpka, located at 100 River Oaks Drive. Meet Wilma - HSEC Pet of the Week Wilma is an 11 month-old Redtick Hound, about 40 pounds and confused as to why she has been with us since June. She might seem a bit wild at first, but only because she is so happy and then she settles down and loves attention. She is an active girl in need of an active home. Having another dog as a buddy would be the optimum. Wilma loves to ride in the car and is good with other dogs but she plays a bit too rough with kitties. Our adoption fees are $100 for dogs and $50 for cats under one-year old; cats over one-year old can be adopted by approved adopters for a fee of their choosing. This adoption fee completely covers the manda-

But Christmas also means the exhange of gifts with those we love and looks of wonder on the faces of our children, grandchildren and other loved ones on a magical Christmas morning. I was fortunate to be raised in a household that placed importance on both of those aspects of the season. My parents made sure we knew what the season was really

Merry Christmas, everyone! about, but would also go to the ends of the earth to find the presents on our lists. Rarely do I recall a request that wasn’t filled. My Christmases were all wonderful in the most literal sense of that word. My grandmother and grandfather weren’t as well-to-do as my parents, but my grandmother never disappointed. She made and gave homemade gifts that I realize today were the best of all. Once, not able to afford to buy me a stuffed toy, she made me a stuffed kangaroo, complete with a baby stuffed kangaroo inside its pouch. But Christmas wasn’t without its tragedies. Like the time I got a Wilt Chamberlain-autographed basketball and on my

first shot with it, impaled it on a splinter protruding from our backyard basketball goal’s creosote supporting post. It stuck there, letting out a sickening deflating whimper. Then there was the time my brother received a BB gun with – as he would soon discover – a plastic stock. When he set it on a heater at my grandmother’s house, he came back to a literal hot mess. There were the baseball gloves, the footballs, the Auburn football uni-

forms and the bicycles through the years. There were tears shed when things broke too quickly, usually on Christmas Day. In my family, there were fruit and fireworks and giant candy canes. Between the candy canes and the Lifesavers books (remember those?), dentists made millions. And there were those odd, almost forgotten gifts that should’ve never been. There were the Creepy Crawlers, where children like me were encouraged to use high heat to turn liquid into jelly-like bugs and other critters. Who can forget lawn darts and the havoc they created (Thankfully, I never owned any, so I’m here today to write

this column.)? Or clackers, the ultimate in armbruisers? With the love and care of my parents and grandparents, I survived it all. Now, it’s my turn. I see now why my mother and father would search high and low for gifts for us. I see now why my grandmother would sew until her fingers bled to create something especially for me. I see now why my father’s step grew jauntier when he tucked a little more than he had originally intended into the Salvation Army kettle. I see now why Mom took so much pleasure in buying a toy for a tot she didn’t know. It’s plain and simple and basic and something

all of us have but always need more of. It’s love. When I see the eyes of my three grandchildren light up, when I feel their arms around my neck in appreciation, when I hear their shrieks of joy, I am loved. Quietness for Christmas

t’s nearly here. After all the lists and deadlines, schedule coordinating and household decorating, Christmas is next Sunday. If your task list is as long as the lines in stores, if you feel pressure about places to be and people to see, if your calendar is full and your wallet is empty, you may be feeling some stress. Maybe today would be a good time for us to think about the priceless treasure of quietness. Would you be interested in reducing your stress? Would you like to have a greater sense of fulfillment and enhance your relationship with God? Here’s a reminder (and maybe a prescription) for you: “Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.” (Ecclesiastes 4:6) It sounds to me like Solomon might have been talking about some of us. Does “two hands full of toil and striving after the wind” describe too many of your days? We are busy, aren’t we? We’re running late. Our “to do” list ends in an ellipsis. We

have adopted busyness as a virtue, even for our children. We buy the lie that a filled schedule is the path to happiness. A big occasion like Christmas just adds another layer to the everyday overload. And we get into trouble because we have no margin. Do you have any margin? (I’m asking myself as well as you.) If you think margin is that fake butter you smear on your toast in the morning, we need to talk. Margin is simply room— time and space to rest, reflect and recharge our emotional batteries. Do you ever notice or feel in yourself the negative effects of living without margin? I do. When we are tense and snappy and the people and situations around us in traffic or in the stores are crazy, could it be that we need “a handful of quietness” to reduce our stress? Why do so many try so hard, and feel so empty at Christmas? If it’s really about Jesus coming into the world, where is the peace he came to bring? Where’s the joy of which angels sing?

What would “a handful of quietness” cost you? Would you have to say no to some requests or reduce your commitments? I am beginning to think that whatever margin costs, it costs even more to live without it. What you gain from having some quietness is worth far more than what you might lose by embracing it. Maybe you agree with everything I’ve written, but don’t see how to make any meaningful change in your noisy, overcrowded life. I freely admit (and many of you already know it) I’m no expert, but I would suggest conducting your self-exam with four points in mind. A plan (a reasonable schedule for doing a manageable number of things, including time for quietness,

to not do things) would help overcome some of that toil and striving. A strong sense of priority (making sure what’s really important gets our best time and energy) would help us avoid squandering those precious resources on things that do not matter or may actually be counter-productive. It is necessary to protect your quietness from over-commitment and self-sabotage by cultivating the discipline to say no and respect the God-given rhythm of work and rest. Most important, pray. Ask God to grant you wisdom to discern and choose your activities and commitments. Your best intention and most intense effort will not honor God or bless you without his counsel and power. Can you imagine how doing these things and learning to think and act this way would reduce your stress, increase your sense of well-being and enrich your relationships (with God and people)? A handful of quietness lets you obey Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.”

This will do very little good if you see the need for greater margin in others, but cannot look at your own life. Trust me about that. It is in your best interest to slow down, sit down and ask yourself some questions. Try these and be honest: “What concerns me about my own margin, or lack of it?” This one might help, too: “What do I wish could be different?” And don’t forget this important one: “What am I willing to do about it?” Thanks for reading my thoughts about this. Quick thinking first responders saves families from fire By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer

At approximately 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Tallassee Fire Department and Friendship Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire at Hillcrest Apartments located at 161 Hillcrest St. in Tallassee. Upon arrival firefighters encountered a full working fire in one of the apartments. Each apartment building contains four apartments. Because of quick thinking and quality training, firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to one apartment. “Simply shutting the front door to one of the apartments saved the neighboring apartment from burning,” said Travis Jones, Tallassee fire chief. According to Jones, apartment fires are not common occurrences in Tallassee and

this fire could have caused much more damage. “We don’t encounter too many apartment fires so this could have been a challenge,” he said. “However, the other three apartments in the building were saved.” Without much real world experience in apartment fires, Jones believes the quick thinking comes directly from firefighter training. “I believe this to be a direct result from a recent series of training classes hosted at the Tallassee Fire Department we call ‘stopping the flow path’,” Jones said. OL - Blake Walters (Sr.) Edgewood Academy – The team’s lone senior and most experienced player, Walters was also its most consistent lineman, recording a team-high 23 pancake blocks. QB - Casey Baynes (Jr.), Tallassee – Baynes (6-foot, 195) guided the Tigers to the state quarterfinals in his first year starting, accounting for 37 touchdowns and 2,525 total yards. RB - D.J. Patrick (So.), Elmore County – Patrick provided the Panther punch with nine 100-yard games and topped the area with 1,339 rushing yards and yards per carry average (7.7), along with 12 scores. RB - Kavosiey Smoke (Jr.), Wetumpka – The 6-foot, 210-pound junior was dangerous catching the ball out of the backfield (16 receptions, 175 yards) and ended up with 1,028 all-purpose yards. RB - DeAndre Williams (Sr.), Wetumpka – Williams helped Wetumpka to its best season in six years, scoring 22 total touchdowns, including three kickoff return TDs, and recording 1,289 total yards. WR - Tyric Belyeu (Sr.), Elmore County – A big-play receiver, the 6-foot senior led the area in receiving yards (602) and touchdowns (7), while hauling in 31 passes. WR - Maurice Young (Sr.), Wetumpka – The speedy wide out racked up 565 all-purpose yards and four scores in his first season with the Indians. ATH - Jadarious Martin (So.), Wetumpka – No one had more of a breakout season than the WHS sophomore, winning the starting QB job amassing 1,934 total yards and notching 18 total touchdowns. PK - Colton Autrey (Jr.), Holtville – Autrey snapped the Bulldogs’ 29-game losing streak in the season finale at Beulah with a 42-yard game-winning field goal; he finished 7-of-9 on FG attempts. DL - Jake Baker (Sr.), Tallassee – On every snap, opposing offenses had to account for Baker (6-foot-2, 290), who garnered 77 tackles, 23 tackles-for-loss, with 5 sacks and 6 blocked kicks. DL - Trent Holley (Sr.), Wetumpka – Holley earned his second straight First Team honor, pacing the area with 8 sacks and ended second on the team with 60 stops, along with two fumbles recoveries. DL - Jay McDonald (Sr.), Wetumpka – The West Alabama commit rounded out the stout WHS defensive front, finishing third on the team in tackles (51) and added 3 forced fumbles and 4 pass break-ups. DL - Kelontae Varner (Jr.), Stanhope Elmore – From his defensive end position, Varner paced the Mustangs’ line with 54 stops and had 3 forced fumbles and fumble recoveries. LB - Logan Goodman (Sr.), Tallassee – Goodman’s 122 tackles headlined the All Area defense while he had 14 tackles for loss along with an interception and 5 fumble recoveries. LB - Evan Headley (Jr.), Holtville – For the second straight season, Headley (6-foot, 190) posted the highest tackle mark for HHS with 88 stops this year. Stokes (Jr.), Stanhope Elmore – Stokes flew around the field from his Jack linebacker position, ending his junior year with 92 stops, 5 picks, 5 sacks and 4 fumble recoveries. DB - Cody Gibson (Sr.), Holtville – Opponents scored a lot on the Bulldogs defense, but Gibson did his best to stop it, breaking up an area best 17 passes and adding 48 tackles. DB - Jamarcus Miller (Sr.), Tallassee – Miller makes the All Area team in back-toback seasons, capping 2016 with 59 stops, 3 interceptions and 8 passes defended to lead the Tigers. DB - Nick Turner (Jr.), Wetumpka – In his junior campaign, Turner improved on his All Area sophomore numbers, picking off four throws, returning one for a touchdown, and collected 52 tackles.
