No injures in shot fired near Harbor Learning By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer

A single gun shot was fired Tuesday morning near the City Pool and no one was injured. The Alexander City Police Department responded to a call of a shot fired in the vicinity of Joseph Street and Central Boulevard near the Harbor Learning Academy and the Alexander City Parks and Recreation Department City Pool. “The victim was cutting grass near the City Pool about 9 a.m. Tuesday,” Alexander

City Police Chief Jay Turner said. “The offender fired one shot at him.” Turner said Daneeka Michelle Thompson, 26, of Coosa County was arrested for attempted domestic violence first degree and reckless endangerment and additional charges are a possibility. Alabama Code 13A-6-20 defines domestic violence first degree as “occurring when a person intends to cause serious physical injury to another person and does so using a dangerous or deadly object or weapon.” See SHOT • Page 5

As the New Site Town Council continues to plan for progress throughout town, the council took action on several financial matters during Monday night’s council meeting. Mayor Phil Blasingame said plans are still moving forward in bringing a health clinic to New Site. To go with the clinic, Blasingame said a group that owns two pharmacies, one of which is located in Tallapoosa County, has expressed an interest in being a part of the facility. In order to accommodate a pharmacy and the clinic, Blasingame said the architect working on the building plans is modifying the initial layout to incorporate the new addition. “They (pharmacy representatives) asked for a meeting with me. We met here in town hall for two hours July 28,” Blasingame said. “They definitely want to place a pharmacy here. They have received a lot of comments from customers who live here wanting them to set up shop here in town.” The current timeline has the See COUNCIL • Page 3

Alex City’s Moten creates blankets for premature babies By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Welcoming a premature child into the world can be a difficult task. Between all of the testing and medical equipment in use to make sure the newborn has a better chance of living, having a premature child can be overwhelming. However, thanks to the generosity and compassion of one local resident, parents and these children have something to provide at least a little comfort through the experience. Alexander City’s Teresa Harrell Moten spends some of her free time knitting and crocheting blankets for families with premature children. For the past 27 years, Moten has been making these blankets, which began due to her own experiences with premature infants. “I started making blankets for my daughter, who was born prematurely,” Moten said. “There were times we weren’t sure she would make it, but she’s healthy and has a 2-year-old of her own today.” During her time in school, Moten said she studied crocheting and sewing, where she learned many of the basics needed to produce these blankets.
