Tallassee candidates speak out
By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer
Terrel Brown Terrel Brown is a lifelong resident of Tallassee. He and his family have lived in Ward Five for 21 years. He has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in education. He is employed at Tallassee Elementary where he teaches physical education. Brown is also the coordinator for the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart. Brown is a military veteran who
graduated from Marine Corps boot camp training at Parris Island, SC. He is a member of the American Legion Post #1983 and Disabled American Veteran Chapter: J Paul Pitts #12. Brown believes the biggest problems currently facing the City of Tallassee are the lack of new revenue, safety, a dwindling of the population, lack of a vision for the City as a whole, urban revitalization and cleanliness, and economic development. Brown believes the answer to these problems is through the
development of progressive and new ideas. Brown believes there are several needed modifications in the city, beginning with a bigger emphasis on public safety, urban revitalization, and economic development. Furthermore, Brown would like to see more police patrolling, a fully staffed police department, and a police sub-station in East Tallassee. He would also like to add a code enforcement officer to Tallassee’s Building Inspection See CANDIDATES • Page 7

Tallassee High School’s auditorium held a large crowd of spectators Tuesday as WTLS hosted the 2016 Mayoral Debate. This was the first mayoral debate to be held in the auditorium since 1988, when Bobby Payne, F.W. (Sonny) Barnene and the then-Mayor Thomas Pollard faced each other on the auditorium stage. That was the year Councilman Payne became Mayor Payne. Like the 1988 debate, Tuesday’s debate drew a large crowd to the auditorium. Candidates took the stage promptly at 6 p.m. Hank Golden, with the Tallassee Redevelopment

WETUMPKA- The lawsuit filed against Jeanna Kervin and Trey Taylor went before Circuit Court Judge Sibley Reynolds Thursday morning at the Elmore County Judicial Complex on Hwy 231 in Wetumpka. Tallassee’s City Attorney, John Smith, represented the city, while the father and son duo, Dale and Mike Segrest represented Kervin and Joe Scarborough stood for Trey Taylor. In opening statements, Smith argued the legitimacy of both Kervin and Taylor’s domicile. Smith pointed out that in order for a new domicile to be established the previous domicile must be completely vacated. Since both candidates still have homes outside of the city limits, Smith argued that the two are not qualified to seek election for Mayor of Tallassee. Both Segrest and Scarborough
