Jury convicts Williams of sexual abuse of young girls

A 42-year-old Alexander City man was found guilty Thursday afternoon of sex crimes against two young girls that occurred back in 2013. A jury took about an hour to find Henry Lemanns Williams, 42, guilty of sexual abuse of a child and sodomy after a trial that spanned four days, with a one-day weather delay. Judge Tom Young, who presided over the trial, will sentence Williams April 25. Each has a suggested sentence of between two and 20 years, but District Attorney Jeremy Duerr indicated that ask Young to go beyond the recommendation due to the nature of the crimes and Williams criminal history. While jurors were not available to speak to their reasoning in reaching the guilty verdict, the tearful testimony of the young victims was hard to forget. The girls are now 14 and 16, and they both went through a series of events where Williams touched them inappropriately and performed acts upon them. In one case a victim was drugged before Williams abused her and they testified that Williams hit them and threatened to kill them if they told anyone what he had done. The youngest of the victims said she still cared for the man, but said it didn’t change what he did to her. See TRIAL • Page A3

Friends and co-workers of an Alexander City man are hoping that someone can help them with information to help them locate Merl Joseph Reed who hasn’t been seen since Wednesday afternoon. Local businessman Lynn Patterson said that Joe had been having some health problems and had ridden with a co-worker to Birmingham to get set up for some surgery on Wednesday. “They got up there and signed in and all and when they had to wait, he said he was going outside to smoke a cigarette,” Patterson said. “That was a 1 p.m. But after

DEAR ABBY: I was married for more than 20 years. My ex and I divorced five years ago. During that time I stayed busy focusing on my children and their needs. About seven months ago I met a nice guy. We saw each other for about five months, then out of nowhere, he broke things off. I was devastated. He said his reason for the breakup was “he needed time to find himself.” He was recently divorced and has sole custody of his kids. He has been under a great deal of stress and started seeing a therapist a couple of months ago. I understand why he needs this time, but I also wish he would let me help. He said he wants to remain friends. I avoided contact with him for several weeks, but now I am drawn back to him. My friends keep telling me to forget him, but I can’t get him off my mind. This man is newly divorced and parenting solo, so he has as much on his plate as he can handle right now. That he’s seeing a therapist
is a wise move, so give him credit for that. But the kind of problems he is trying to work through are not ones you can “help” him with. At a later date things may work out, but clearly not now. A friendship may be possible, but only if you are strong enough to disengage emotionally until he is ready -- which could take a very long time. DEAR ABBY: I have noticed a trend at children’s birthday parties. The children aren’t opening their presents at the party. Instead, the parents collect the gifts and take them home for the child to open later. To me, this seems rude and inconsiderate to the children who are attending the party. Part of the enjoyment of giving a gift is seeing the recipient’s response. Please let me know the rule of etiquette in this matter. Am I correct in thinking that presents should
be opened at children’s birthday parties in front of their guests? -- GIFT ETIQUETTE DEAR G.E.: No rule of etiquette decrees that gifts “must” be opened at the birthday party. Because this trend bothers you, ask the parent of the birthday child why she or he has chosen to have the gifts opened afterward, because there may be more than one reason for it. One that occurs to me might be that it’s a way of preventing embarrassment on the part of children who might not be able to afford a gift as expensive as some of the other children’s. “Life is a gift from God,” Williams said. “It is a precious gift. Today we are thankful that God graced us with Quen and let us share in life, even for just a while.” To hear the words of a parent who has lost a child is emotional, but Quen’s father Michael Foster put it all in perspective. Foster talked about the final weekend he had with his son and said he should have realized that God had a plan, “but at the time I didn’t see how all the pieces were fitting together.” He talked about what a joy his son had been, then challenged the young people in attendance to make Quen’s life matter. “For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son so that we all shall have everlasting life,” Foster said. “So today I pray that because I have given my son, somebody out there is going to be affected by it in a way that might change their life for the better. That’s my prayer today.” Dr. Beverly Price was Quen’s principal at Radney and Alexander City Middle School and she said that she will remember Quen as a quiet, humble leader. “He didn’t have to be in the spotlight,” Price said. “But by you all being here today, it tells me that he is shining down upon us all today from heaven.” Alexander City Police Officer Lagorgera Maxwell grew up in the same neighborhood with Quen and said that while he will miss him, he will always remember the way he loved life. He left the young people who were there
with some words to think about. “I ask that you all remember that your actions have reactions,” Maxwell said. “You can never forget that the choices you make today can impact your lives today and forever.” BRHS Basketball Coach Jeff Hines said that he considered Quen a son and that he will remember his character and competitiveness. As much as he admired the way he attacked things on the basketball court, Hines shared a life lesson that Quen reminded him of after a tough basketball loss. “We had lost a game we should have won and I was mad and got on them pretty good,” Hines said. “A couple of the kids stood up and said some things. Then Quen piped up and said, ‘Coach, you know there’s more to life than basketball.’ “That statement will be with me for the rest of my life. My answer back to him was ‘You are exactly right.’… I love you my brother.” The celebration featured memories from friends and loved ones, stories from BRHS Principal Dr. Anthony Wilkinson, scripture readings from Bro. Wayne Cowhick and Rev. Richard Jacobs. Michael Williams, Courtney Davis, Scott Blake and Sheryl Borden all shared musical selections with Quen’s family and friends who paid their last respects. around him. “About that time, I looked in the rear view mirror,” Oliver said. “I saw the roof the chicken house start to go.” When Oliver returned, part of the roof of one his chicken houses had been damaged and his newly constructed pole barn was demolished. “Yea, we just had power to the barn two days ago,” Oliver said. “I’m thankful no one was hurt.” Oliver is thankful to be unhurt but is just as thankful for the help of friends that came to his aid to repair the chicken house roof before the next round of rain. “I had 3-week-old chickens in there,” Oliver said. “We had to get that roof back on before it rained again. “It was a little bit of everyone who came out, family, friends. I am very grateful.” Thursday, National Weather Service Meteorologist Kevin Laws visited New Site to try to determine if the damage at Oliver’s farm and on Highway 22 was from straight-line winds or from a tornado.
While looking at the pole barn, Laws estimated wind speeds of 75 to 80 mph. “It did not push over or break off any trees,” Laws said. After looking at it closer, Laws was unsure as to what it was exactly. “A tornado sucks trees and debris towards the center of the path,” Laws said. “Here it just pushed it along the path.” Laws next visited the stretch of Highway 22 where trees were blown across the road blocking passage Wednesday afternoon. Again, Laws was unsure because the direction of the fallen trees but still had not ruled out a tornado but indicated that wind speeds were higher with a couple of broken off trees. “Now that I have the exact location of this path, I will see where it matches up with radar data,” Laws said. “It might match up with a hook that we saw yesterday and if so, I might just say it was a small tornado.” Cliff William / The Outlook

Williams was represented by attorneys Mark Tindal and Joseph Fuller. In his opening statement, Tindal had laid a defense that suggested that Williams was the victim in the case. “Henry Williams is the victim of a horrific and vicious lie perpetrated by his very own mother,” said Tindal. According to Tindal, the reason that the allegations arose is because his mother had custody of four of her son’s children and that she received benefits for them. Faced with losing custody, Tindal claimed the stories were fabricated to get the girls back. Duerr said the verdicts may now allow the healing for these two young victims to begin. “I would first of all like to thank the jury for their service and giving their undivided attention,” Duerr said. “Listening to the facts in a case like this is difficult and emotional at times. But they listened to those girls and returned verdicts that gave them a measure of justice. This is something they will live with all of their lives, but hopefully this will help the healing process begin.”

Our View
The smartest thing Bentley can do is offer his resignation
W
e have talked about the importance of ethics in our government leaders many times in this space, and this certainly won’t be the last time. Thursday, the Alabama Ethics Commission found there was sufficient evidence to seek criminal charges against Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley and turned over the case to the attorney general’s office. Bentley is accused of using state personnel and equipment to further personal interests and three campaign finance violations: using campaign funds to pay the legal bills of a public official, former top political aide and alleged mistress Rebekah Mason; making a loan to his campaign outside the time he was a candidate and receiving a campaign contribution outside the time he was a candidate for governor. In addition to the developments Wednesday, the Alabama House Judiciary Committee has said impeachment hearings will begin April 10. To say the lid has blown off this mess is an understatement. A true public servant is a hard character to find in our deeply corrupted state political scene, but we challenge Bentley to do one thing – bow out now before dragging the state through the mud any longer. A true leader would acknowledge and weigh the consequences of not only his actions, but the effect a criminal investigation and impeachment process is going to have on the constituents of this state if he does not resign. Alabamians need an immediate fix to stabilize our governing body so they can focus on the real issues at hand. Some things coming up in this year’s legislative session include prison reform, abortion, redistricting, Medicaid expansion, lottery and gambling, capital punishment, gasoline tax increases and our education fund. Ethics violations, criminal proceedings and an impeachment process shouldn’t be the sprinkles on top of this sundae. We challenge Bentley to do the right thing and take this monkey off our backs so legislators can focus on just that – passing legislation that can get us to a better place as a state.

God wants us to share our bounty
W
arm weather has officially been declared at my house because my wife decided we needed to start cooking out. That meant I had to attack the grill and a winter’s worth of gunk build up. Every year I threaten just to throw the thing away and start over, but every year I persevere and clean it. The first thing I have to do is reconnoiter for early wasp nests. Boy, those nasty things are in a bad mood when you start tearing down their home. They are so aggressive that you would think they had a low interest mortgage with a long-term lease on the property. If churches exist in the insect world then I believe those things serve on the finance committee and its budget hearing time. Next, I have to reattach the propane gas line and give that baby a test firing. I feel like a rocket scientist at NASA waiting for the rocket propellants to ignite. Rural folks living what ‘preppers’ seek

et this: More people are fleeing big cities for rural areas and some are doing so because they fear a major financial collapse is imminent. According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, big cities are losing population at a rapid clip. Chicago’s Cook County saw 66,000 people move out in 2016. Many of these people are moving to rural areas in the Northwest and elsewhere. The Chicago Tribune explains that a growing number of them are survivalists who seek homes that they can defend in the event that a collapse occurs. Lucky for me, I already have a rural homestead outside of Pittsburgh. I bought the modest fixer-upper 20 years ago. It sits high on a big piece of ground near a small town I shall refer to as Hickberry. My father and I did some basic renovations to make it livable. I lived in it for a few years, then rented it out to live the high life in Washington, D.C. I moved back to the house five years ago and am almost done with a total rehab. But here’s one thing I learned along the way: The people in metro Washington are way different from the good-natured people of Hickberry. You see, D.C. is populated with thousands of people with master’s degrees, who rely on other people to feed them and keep them sheltered when it is raining. If

There are some limitations. Liquids, appliances with a compressor, tires, batteries, light bulbs, televisions, computers, propane tanks and any hazardous or medical waste cannot be disposed of at these locations during Throw Away Days events. Wood said that the volume of trash and unwanted items that were collected on Jan. 10-11, which were both two weekdays, shows that people need a place to get rid of items that have collected at their homes on a regular basis.

“Over 36 tons of garbage was collected, similar to the 40 tons collected last April,” Wood said. “Unlike what was done in April, these two days were during the week. I think that shows that there is a need for this service. “We are pleased to announce that we are moving forward with a Throw Away Day Program. Several commissioners have already agreed to join forces throughout the year and continue to offer dumpsters at no charge.” After next Monday and Tuesday’s Throw Away Days, the program will again place dumpsters in locations on July 10-11 and October 9-10. “County officials and volunteer groups have been battling the problem of illegal dumping for quite some time and this is a perfect opportunity to rid themselves of these items the right way,” Wood said. “This has been a muchneeded resource for county residents and I encourage everyone to thank their commissioners and make them aware of how beneficial it has been. “

Phillips signs with CACC BRHS senior announces plans to continue playing softball By CATHY HIGGINS Sports Editor
Benjamin Russell senior Taylor Phillips announced Thursday that once she graduates and leaves the Lady Wildcats softball team behind in May, she plans to take her game to the next level by signing with Central Alabama Community College. “I’ll be a pitcher and a hitter,” she said. For Phillips, the decision to select CACC was an easy one. “I’ve always wanted to go to CACC
before any four-year school,” she said. “I really think this is going to help start my college career.” Michelle Phillips is more than pleased with her daughter’s decision. “I’m thrilled,” she said. “Craig (Phillips’ father) and I both went to CACC before we went to Auburn. It’s a great school and we wanted her to be there whether she was going to play ball or not.” Lady Wildcats head coach Jessica Johnson is also thrilled by Phillips’ decision to play at CACC. “I’m very excited for her,” she said.
“I think it’s the best decision she could have made. CACC is a very special program to me and I’m always glad to see our kids go and do well. I’m sure she’ll be successful.” Lady Trojans head coach Greg Shivers looks forward to having Phillips be part of his team this fall. “We’re very excited to have her,” he said. “We think she’s going to help at bat and in the circle and we’re looking forward to it.” Once there, Phillips plans to gear her studies toward the medical field. “I plan to study pharmacy,” she said.
Lady Generals defeat Central Coosa Horseshoe Bend varsity softball team shuts out Lady Cougars on the road By CATHY HIGGINS Sports Editor
Thursday was a day of exultation for the Horseshoe Bend varsity softball team and bitter disappointment for the Lady Cougars as the Lady Generals defeated Central Coosa in a 17-0 shutout at Cougar Softball Field. Horseshoe Bend came out swinging in the first inning by scoring a run. That came courtesy of senior Kynsley Blasingame, who sent junior Cheyenne Howard home with an RBI double. She also led the Lady Generals at the plate with two hits. “I think timely hitting plays just as important a role as pitching does,” she said. “As a senior, I just knew I needed to lead the team at the plate as well as in the circle in order for us to win.” The Lady Generals scored another run in the second inning. Their momentum only increased as the game progressed as Horseshoe Bend scored five more runs in the third inning and 10 more in the fourth. Nine of those runs were scored on Coosa fielding errors. Meanwhile, Central Coosa failed to score a single run. That also came thanks to the efforts of Blasingame. In four innings on the mound, she struck 11 Lady Cougars out and only allowed two hits and three walks. “It could have been better,” she said. “But it was OK.” Horseshoe Bend head coach David Caldwell thought his star pitcher did better than OK on both sides of the plate. “Kynsley Blasingame pitched a two-hit shutout,” he said. “She has been solid in both areas.” Central Coosa eighth-grader K.K. Dunham took the loss for the Lady Cougars. In three innings on the mound she had one strikeout, allowed two walks, gave up seven hits and surrendered seven runs. The win brings the Lady Generals’ season record to 12-10 overall and
