THE FIFTH WALL

90th Anniversary Edition

College Point, Queens, NY (1956)

FOREWORD

New York is a city of contradictions. Untamed vegetation bursts through concrete. Street culture pulsates beneath a skyline of straight lines and right angles. Raw, industrial textures give way to lush, organic parks.

This duality is at the heart of The Fifth Wall, a special new edition that celebrates the 90th anniversary of Edward Fields Carpet Makers. Founded in 1935, Edward Fields is proud to call the electric, artistic hub of New York City its home. The eight carpets that comprise this collection tell twin stories of the company’s past and the city that shaped it.

The in-house studio team drew inspiration for some of The Fifth Wall designs from Edward Fields’ archive, which chronicles the company’s history through decades of sketches and textiles. The result: forward-looking, boundary-pushing rugs in conversation with their predecessors.

Like the city they reflect, the Fifth Wall carpets are diverse and energetic. Skyscrapers huddle together in a collage. Cloud cover hangs over a silk recessed diamond motif. Modern architecture tessellates into mirrored striation.

The designers first sketched by hand in gouache, collage, and colored pencil—methods that defined Edward Fields’ earliest works. They then hand-tufted using artisanal skills that the brand has championed since its conception.

The Fifth Wall melds past and present, structure and fluidity. Layer after layer, it nods to the ever-evolving innovation and resilience of its birthplace and muse: New York City.

SHIFTING SKYLINE I

Dense and colorful oblong shapes huddle together like buildings stacked on a city block. A multi-level cut captures the rhythm of transformation. This silk-accented wool collage design pays tribute to the one constant in New York City: change.

MOON RIVER I

Moon River is a reimagined archive piece that translates nocturnal reflections into flowing movement. A silk-accented linear groove flows across the carpet’s oval face, creating the impression of a powdery celestial orb cut with earthen veins.

HIGHLINE I

Floral archive painting meets modern urbanity in this lively textile. Vegetation bursts between concrete planks, creating a tableau of chaos and order. The effect is striking; free-spirited multi-fiber drips into disciplined, single-pile, silk-highlighted wool.

DECO DIAMONDS I

Whether in The Hive, a chain link fence, or their own district, diamonds abound in the concrete jungle. Like cloud cover on a misty day, cut pile hangs over a silk recessed geometric pattern, bringing quiet and comfort to an Art Deco motif.

SPELLBOUND I

Inspired by an archival layout, this bold new composition imagines the cross-section where one building gives way to its neighbor, each frame a window into a vibrant, striated experience. Low loop pile articulation creates high contrast, imitating architectural tessellation.

SUTTON PLACE I

This textile’s refined motif evokes a grandeur of yore; it reinterprets a 1950s archival Beaux-Arts scroll in silk-accented raised cut wool against a loop pile ground. The resulting effect is part polished, traditional design, part sketch—a nod to the constant evolution of a draft in the making.

LOUVER COMEBACK I

Tracks of overlaid, interrupted triangles shoot past one another like rushing commuters in this revival of a 1970s archive piece. The shag quality of the carpet is enriched by subtle silk highlights that soften and refine its bold, retro spirit.

WHISPERING I

High pile ridges skate around and through this mesmerizing free-form rug. Inspired by the Guggenheim’s lobby, Little Island, and the cyclical movement of thrown ceramics, this 1980s archival tribute uses higher piles with refined silk accents to create a delicate contrast across a textured surface.
