Course Description
Embark upon a career as a hairdressing assistant with this pre-apprenticeship qualification. This course will give you the basic skills employers are looking for to establish a career as a salon assistant. Learn from the best in fully operational hair and beauty salons that will give you experience in a busy workplace setting that employers trust.
Our exceptional teaching teams maintain strong industry connections and keep up to date with the latest trends and styles. They are dedicated to passing on the basic knowledge and entry-level skills to help you build your career and progress on to further study. You'll learn how to greet and prepare clients for salon services, communication as part of a salon team, and how to perform basic salon duties like providing shampoo and basin services.
The personal services industry is set to expand in employment opportunities over the next five years by as many as 25,000 new positions. This course is designed to teach you routine tasks and procedures as well as team and group work that shows employers you are dedicated to building a career in hairdressing.

BYOD – Bring Your Own Device
The Robina campus is BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) campus. The campus’s dynamic and flexible learning environments have been designed to encourage collaboration and interactivity through the use of portable devices such as laptops and tablets. BYOD will also encourage a reduction in paper usage and help reduce our carbon footprint, and well as help bridge the gap between on-campus and at-home learning, and
enhance your customisation and personalisation experience.
To get the best education experience, your BYOD device will need to meet the following minimum requirements:
• portable device running Windows 10 or later (or MacOS 11 or later)
• access to a webcam and headset with microphone
• access to an up-to-date version of Google Chrome
• access to Microsoft Office software
• access to a reliable high-speed broadband internet connection when at home.
You can use your BYOD device to access:
• video and audio recordings
• digital learning resources
• complete online assessments
• participate in classroom discussions via online communication tools.
BYOD portal
In order to help students get the tools they need for learning, TAFE Queensland has partnered with JB Hi-Fi Solutions to offer our students a great range of specialised high-performance devices and accessories via the BYOD Portal. Devices available on the portal include discounted pricing, packaging, and extra inclusions such as extended warranties, software licences and fast-tracked repairs.

Resources
You will need to have the following:
• Stationery such as pens, pencils, notebook and eraser (general stationery).
• Students are required to wear a black shirt, black pants or skirt (accompanied by black stockings or leggings) and enclosed, non-slip soled shoes.
• Recommended: that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player.

Parking and Public Transport ON CAMPUS CAR PARKING
Students and staff can only park in one of the dedicated 198 TAFE Queensland car park spaces. The car park is shared with other organisations (Metricon and a Medical Centre) and is managed by an external contractor and registration recognition technology system will be in place.
Please note that the contractor will issue fines for staff and student cars and motorcycles parked in non TAFE Queensland parking spaces and also if a vehicle is not registered to park in a TAFE Queensland space.
YOU NEED TO BE REGISTERED FOR FREE PARKING
Your privacy is important and only your registration details for the purposes of registration recognition technology will be shared with the car park contractor.

Electric Car Recharging Spots
There are 10 EV Charging Spots on campus for use by students, staff and visitors.
Off Campus Car Parking
Street parking is limited and adherence to time restrictions is critical to avoid parking fines.(administered by the Gold Coast City council)
CBUS Stadium is offering student/staff parking under the VUE Building for $5 per day payable on entry. This carpark is approximately a 10 minute walk from the campus.
Train and Bus Travel
The Robina Train Station is a short walk (less than 5 minutes) from the Robina Campus. There are multiple bus routes stopping at the Station and also at the Robina Town Centre which is less than a kilometre away.
Gold Coast City Council Interactive Active Travel Maps An active travel app will be available by the time the campus opens. The QR Code for this will be displayed at the campus in July.
Active Travel Reward System
Stay tuned for details of the Active Travel Reward System – register your arrival on campus each day by bike, walking or public transport to accumulate your tokens to redeem products or discounts at the Seedpod Café.
LIME Bikes From July you will be able to sign up with LIME Bikes (hiring system) using a QR Code. Sign up with your TAFE Queensland email address to receive a 20% discount on rides.
Work Experience
Work experience is an important part of this course and provides students with an opportunity to further their learning whilst undertaking tasks relevant to their studies. Work experience can also help form careerbuilding relationships.
We recommend all students undertake 80 hours of work experience and encourage students to be proactive in finding their own placement. Students may contact potential companies prior to the commencement of their course, however for legal, liability, and insurance reasons they must not start work experience until after the course has commenced and insurance is in place.
Finding a placement for work experience:
• Work experience needs to be within the hairdressing industry
• While on work experience insurance will be covered by TAFE Queensland Gold Coast
• Work experience is unpaid.
• There is plenty of time to do work experience. It can be done on the weekends and school holidays.
• Students are responsible for organising their own transport to and from work experience.
• This is an opportunity to demonstrate an appropriate attitude and interest in your chosen career choice, increasing your chance of future employment opportunities. It may also help you gain an apprenticeship.
Further information, including how to gain insurance coverage, will be provided to you in the first few weeks of your course by the TAFE Gold Coast Vocational Placement Coordinator when they visit your class
Course Funding
This program is a VET in School (VETiS) funded program so there is no cost to eligible students.
What is VET in School (VETiS) funding?
The VET investment budget provides funding for students to complete one VETiS qualification listed on the Priority Skills List while attending a Queensland secondary school (in Years 10, 11 and 12).
Qualifications are primarily at certificate I and II level and are those that have been identified by industry as leading to employment.
Prior to enrolment, TAFE Queensland Gold Coast checks all student eligibility for VETiS funding. If it is deemed that a student has previously used their VETiS funding they will be contacted and offered a position with the full fee for service price.
