Career Taster Vehicle Trades (Marine)
Program Description
Get hands on and explore the future of the marine industry through this practical, non-accredited program designed to build skills, confidence and clear career pathways. This immersive 9-day experience begins with a oneday orientation and workshop safety induction, giving students the knowledge and expectations required to work safely and confidently in a trade environment.
Participants then rotate through eight days of practical marine trade exposure, gaining real world experience across marine mechanics, marine craft construction, marine cabinetmaking and engineering. The program is delivered end to end by skilled teachers, with a strong focus on collaboration across trades, ensuring a wellrounded and engaging learning experience. Students will also benefit from industry engagement opportunities, including guest speakers and insights from past apprentices, helping to connect training with real world pathways.
Through workshop-based activities, students learn how marine engines and onboard systems are maintained, repaired and kept operating safely in maritime environments. They explore the process of building marine vessels from the ground up, including construction methods, materials, boat components and safe workshop practices used in the marine manufacturing industry. Students also discover how specialised cabinetry is designed and crafted for marine environments, learning about unique materials, construction techniques and precision woodworking skills required to produce cabinetry that withstands harsh marine conditions.
The experience wraps up with an end of program celebration, recognising student achievements and providing an opportunity to showcase their work.

Eligibility Criteria
To take part in the Career Taster program you must be 15 to 17 years old and either:
Be a Year 10 student currently enrolled in a mainstream Queensland school, or
Be enrolled in a Special Assistance School, or
Be disengaged from school.
Resources Required
Under Workplace Health and Safety legislation students are legally required to always wear appropriate protective clothing in class and around the Trades area. You will need to have the following:
Overalls or long-sleeved tops and pants.
Steel capped safety work boots, required from the first day.
Note: No Singlets or crop tops can be worn to any of the classes.
Campus Facilities
Located in the heart of the marine precinct at Coomera this specialised training facility is based on-site with the Gold Coast’s largest boat building employer, Riviera. The facility boasts two levels of world-class, industry-style workshops and specialised learning spaces.

A small café is located near the campus.
Parking and Public Transport
Parking is available on campus via Darley Street.
Bus stops are located on Waterways Drive, a short walk to the campus.
Program Funding
The Career Taster Program is fully funded by the Queensland Government and is offered at no cost to eligible Year 10 students. It is also important to note that this program does not use any of your VET in Schools (VETiS) funding entitlement.
