Career Taster Health and Community Services
Program Description
Students gain hands on experience across Health/Nursing, Aged Care & Disability, Community Services, and Early Childhood Education and Care through a range of engaging, practical activities. Experiences such as CPR Showdown, Operation Heartbeat, wellbeing sessions, hazard hunts, and Aged Care & Disability Olympics provide an authentic insight into care focused roles—going beyond learning to show what these careers are really like in practice.
Throughout the program, students explore real job outcomes and career pathways across nursing and health, aged care and disability support, community services, and early childhood education. They develop an understanding of the skills, personal qualities, and study options linked to each industry, supporting informed decisions about future TAFE at School, certificate, and diploma pathways.
Delivered as an 8-week Career Taster, the program is designed to build confidence, spark interest, and give students a clear picture of where a career in health and community services could take them.
Topics include Health and Nursing, Aged Care and Disability, Community Services, Early Childhood and Childcare.

Eligibility Criteria
To take part in the Career Taster program you must be 15 to 17 years old and either:
Be a Year 10 student currently enrolled in a mainstream Queensland school, or
Be enrolled in a Special Assistance School, or
Be disengaged from school.
Resources Required
Students must wear smart casual clothing and closed-in shoes.
No midriffs, singlets, offensive logos, ripped clothing, short shorts/skirts, or open-toed shoes (e.g. thongs or slides).
All required resources and materials will be supplied throughout the program.
Campus Facilities
Our Southport campus offers vibrant spaces and advanced learning technologies. Facilities include a refreshed customer service centre with touch screens for enquiries and contemporary new study zones.
The campus' central location offers plenty of places to eat or relax between classes. The campus is regularly serviced by public transport including the light rail with a G:link station on its doorstep.

Parking available onsite (Student rates approx. $ 3.50 per day).
Bus stops are located at the front of the campus on Scarborough Street and a light rail (G:link) station across the road.
Program Funding
The Career Taster Program is fully funded by the Queensland Government and is offered at no cost to eligible Year 10 students. It is also important to note that this program does not use any of your VET in Schools (VETiS) funding entitlement.
