Tabor Adelaide student, Dan Newton 24, has been selected to represent Australia in the 2014 Winter Olympics in the sport of luging. Dan’s career began by chance - after skate boarding with friends he realized he could go faster if he sat down on the board. He later found out that this was an actual sport, street luging and his career is luging was born. After a few successful races he made the progression from luging on the street to ice. Dan began studying a Bachelor of Ministry at Tabor in 2009 following recommendations from family and friends. His favourite subject thus far has been ‘Creative Living’ because “it gave me a more in-depth understanding of grace.” At present Dan is married, working for himself as a builder and involved with the Blackwood Hills Baptist Church. Tabor would like to wish Dan the best of luck at the 2014 Winter Olympics – we look forward to seeing you back on campus when you return!
02 | Liberamente. “freely, with liberty” Youth Work Information Evening On Thursday 19th September, Tabor Adelaide held its annual Youth Work Information evening. Following on from the success of Open Day, the information evening provided prospective students with another opportunity to find out more about the Bachelor of Social Science (Youth Work) degree. Hosted by the Youth Work Coordinator & Lecturer, Carl Robinson, the event was well attended and everyone had the chance to have their questions answered. Attendees were treated to a presentation by guest speaker, Sean Lappin on ‘the Meaning, Value, Opportunity and Challenge of a Career in Youth Work.’ Sean is highly regarded and active in the youth work field. As detailed in his biography, “Sean is the Managing Director of Connected Self, an SA based agency providing psychological services to young people in schools, training and consulting services. Sean is also in high demand as a leadership development consultant and strategic planner working with large non-government organisations in various parts of Australia.”
Book Release - Frank Tucker’s “Intercultural Communication for Christian Ministry Frank Tucker has been affiliated with the Intercultural Studies unit at Tabor Adelaide since the mid 1990’s. Frank recently released his new book titled “Intercultural Communication for Christian Ministry.” As outlined in the book description, this is “the most comprehensive work on intercultural communication theory and practice for cross-cultural Christian workers since the 1991 publication of David Hesselgrave’s Communicationg Christ Cross-Culturally.” Over 50% of western societies rely on oral communication methods rather than abstract literate forms. At the launch, Frank shared the importance of creatively communicating God’s story in a media driven age through mediums such as Chronological Bible storytelling, drama, art and secular film.
03 | Liberamente. “freely, with liberty” Tabor Adelaide Writing Group - Author.docx This month saw the launch of the new Tabor Adelaide Writing Group involving current and graduate students of our Creative Writing programs as well as Creative Writing faculty. The room was full, the community vibe strong, the muse flowed. This initiative will represent Tabor well in the public sphere as well as adding depth and richness to our shared culture. The launch of this group, coinciding with a related initiative to run a national writing competition with prizes awarded at next April’s launch of the Tabor Creative Writing annual anthology signals that in this post-accreditation and departmental re-structuring era – life and blood is flowing back into the veins of our Humanities programs and there is much to celebrate and greet with optimism. In the first meeting members were asked to bring along a short story that detailed how a small Christian writers group got its name. The group chose the name Author.docx. The idea was a collaboration between James Cooper & Ian Field. James came up with name and Ian suggested that it be written as Author.docx as oppose to Authordox. Ian received a prize for his efforts. James, Ben, Rosanne, Claire and Joh we congratulate you on your resilience and wish you well in your dreaming and vision implementation. For those interested in joining Author.docx contact Dr James Cooper Senior Lecturer and Graduate Studies Coordinator (Humanities) via email at JCooper@adelaide.tabor.edu.au. The group meet once a month on a Wednesday evening, from 5-7:30pm. The next meeting will be Wednesday 30th October 2013. This is a fantastic opportunity to maintain a regular writing routine outside of class, to get involved in writing for pleasure and passion, to showcase your best writing and receive ongoing feedback and support, while celebrating and enhancing the excellent success of our Creative Writing Program.
Congratulations Josh Spier on his recent publication Congratulations to Josh Spier, Lecturer in Social Sciences (Youth Work) who had his article titled ‘A walk in the park: An experiential approach to youth participation’ published in the September issue of Youth Studies Australia. The article features a case study from his teaching practice at Tabor and positively profiles our institution and geographical setting. Well done Josh!

AUSSE Survey Tabor Adelaide has again participated in the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE). The survey measures student’s perceptions of different aspects of their tertiary education experience. The results benchmark Tabor against other competing higher education providers. In previous years, Tabor has excelled, receiving well above average results in the areas of academic challenge, student and staff interaction, supportive learning environment and overall satisfaction. A big thank you to all the students who completed this survey! The prize for participation was 2 x book vouchers. The vouchers were awarded to Bee McCann and Benjamin Quilliam (whose award was accepted by his wife, Mel). Bee is studying a bachelor of Ministry, whilst, is studying a graduate diploma in Christian Studies. We look forward to seeing the results which will be released in March of 2014.
