Annette Blackett is a part of the Tabor Adelaide Alumni, having graduated with a degree in Teacher Education (Primary) in 2007. Since then, Annette has taught in Australia, England and Mozambique. It is her belief that “children are the same the world over… all in need, and deserving of, genuine love, care and a sound education to fulfil their life potential.” Annette is the co-founder of The Child’s Place (Australia) Fund, a not-for-profit organisation promoting education and community development in Mozambique. This multi-denominational organisation promotes Christian beliefs. Their mission statement is centered upon creating a better life for the people of Mozambique, “...there is a special place in the world for them…a place to feel safe, to have hope and to know freedom, a place where they can experience life to their full potential...” Annette is doing truly inspiring work, proving that one person can make a difference in the world. 02 | Liberamente. “freely, with liberty” Creation Care at Tabor Adelaide Creation Care at Tabor (CC@T) is Tabor’s committee for sustainable practice. As a committee we are dedicated to helping Tabor reach its goals of sustainability and environmental practice demonstrating that, as followers of Christ, we are called to care for His creation. Did you know Tabor is a part of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance (SSA)? The SSA is a collection of schools who are dedicated to making sustainability a priority in their campuses, practices and curricula. These are just examples of the many ways that we are making sustainable practice apart of our community at Tabor: • Gradually replacing the pre-existing 400 watt halide globes with large 200 watt high efficiency compact flouro globes (in the up facing wall shell lights). • Coffee grounds are used for garden compost. • All batteries and flouro globes are stock piled by the Campus Manager and taken to Mitre 10 for disposal. • Tabor also has a community garden located on the southern side of the campus on Mitchell Street. Anyone is welcome to plant or pick whatever is growing - currently we have broad beans, strawberries, rosemary, parsley and sage. Watch the plant below grow as we achieve more, and work towards making Tabor a greener college. 04 | Liberamente. “freely, with liberty” Teacher Education Graduand Celebration On Monday 16th September 2013, the Teacher Education graduands met for the last official time as college students to attend a debrief session after their recently-completed 8-week Internship. The session was followed by a small celebration in the College Chapel. Credit Union SA provided light refreshments for the event and also attended to award the 2013 recipients of the Academic and Professional Communication Awards. The Academic Award was shared by Kate Davidson and Peter Jeffree, who both achieved a final Grade Point Average of greater than or equal to 6.94. The Professional Communication Award was received by Elizabeth McDonald for her consistent and professional approach to communication throughout her course. Ms Susan Walters from Credit Union SA presented the awards. The candlelit celebration held in the chapel provided the graduands with an opportunity to share their highlights and memorable moments from their years at Tabor. Pam Kent (Principal of Woodcroft Primary School) gave encouraging and relevant insight into the impact a teacher can have in students’ lives. After finalising assignment hand-in and attending exit interviews, graduands are ready and free to register to teach through the Teachers’ Registration Board. For many graduands the end of the course comes as a bit of an, “Oh......we’ve finished.......moment” but that quickly turns to excitement and anticipation of the opportunity to teach in their own right, as early as Term 4 of this year!

Tales From the Upper Room is an annual anthology of writing from the students of Tabor Adelaide’s Creative Writing Program. It is also open to submissions from other Tabor students, staff, or family and friends having an association with the College. We are currently seeking submissions of original, previously unpublished poetry, short fiction and creative nonfiction for our 2013-14 anthology. Submission procedures are as follows: When submitting Poetry or Prose to Tales 2013, please email your work as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) attachment to: jcooper@adelaide.tabor.edu.au Multiple submissions should be emailed separately, with each submission being identified in the following manner: For Poetry Subject line: Example:

We are open to submissions of any length, but as a guide suggest short stories, essays or extracts of up to 2500 words (3000 max), and poems not exceeding 50 lines. To improve your chance of publication, please ensure your submission has been edited, proofread and formatted to your highest possible standard. Submissions are on-going but we would like to have most material gathered before Christmas 2013. The earlier you get your work in, the better the chances it’ll make the final edit.

02 | Liberamente. “freely, with liberty� 08 Congratulations to Lyndal Evans who was awarded the Perpetual Trophy Congratulations to Lyndal Evans, Lecturer in Teacher Education (Home Economics) on winning the Home Economics Institute of Australia (SA) Perpetual Trophy on World Teachers Day! Lyndal was nominated for the award by her professional colleagues for her outstanding contribution to Home Economics Education. The award was presented by the Minister for Education, Jennifer Rankin. Lyndal has taught in DECD Schools for 30 years until 2009. Since then, she has been involved in writing and lecturing in subjects for Home Economics Teachers at both Tabor Adelaide and UniSA. Well done Lyndal!

Magazine to give one lucky writer, blogger or poetic peep the chance to have their written piece published and lunch with award winning author Rosanne Hawke. Jeniece Van Heer won the competition for her short story titled ‘The Tragedy of Alexandra and Riley.’ Jeniece entered the ‘competition because “it was an excuse to write and it seemed like a unique opportunity. “ At 15 years of age, Jeniece draws inspiration from her everyday experiences, friends and books. “I’d say that every book I read influences me somehow, Jasper Jones taught me how to combine humour and tragedy, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde taught me how to be succinct.” From her lunch date with author and Tabor Adelaide Creative Writing Lecturer, Rosanne Hawke, Jeniece gained valuable insight into how to become a successful writer. Jeniece said of her meeting that Rosanne advised her on “how to get published and develop a story. Other than that we basically just had a really nice discussion over some delicious Vietnamese food.” When asked about her experience at Tabor Adelaide, Jeniece said “well my dad’s a lecturer so I’ve seen a lot of classrooms but I think that Tabor has a different way of teaching which is a lot more personal. The building is really impressive! When I first saw it I looked down at my jeans and thought “I’m going to get kicked out.” We at Tabor Adelaide would like to congratulate Jeniece and wish her all the best in the future. National Poverty Week A big thank you to all the staff and students that helped support National Poverty Week by raising awareness and donating to the cause! The Tabor Hub was transformed by displays from different AntiPoverty organisations such as TEAR Australia. TEAR Australia ‘is a movement of Christians in Australia responding to the needs of poor communities around the world.’ Their display encouraged people to take ‘selfies’ with a cardboard cut out. Pictured below are members of the Tabor community supporting this worthy cause.
