A Global Perspective Embracing the Unusual at Tabor Adelaide
Challenge is calling on the Australian Government to do its fair share to end the world’s water and sanitation crisis by increasing the aid we give to this area.
The Orange Hope Clinic & The Great Toilet Tour Visit Tabor! Tabor Adelaide regularly has visitors to its campus to assist in developing global awareness amongst the student body. They are often memorable, but generally they are not in any way unusual. However, this was not the case with the two we had this September. Orange Hope Aids Clinic, sponsored by SIM Australia and SIM Aid, was set up for a day and provided an opportunity to go on the journey of a person living in southeast Africa. Participants were taken through the hardships of what many people living in Malawi face every day, encountering some of the many issues they have to tackle. It meant confronting what many Africans call their biggest enemy: HIV/AIDS. In addition, a two metre giant toilet spent two days on campus as part of a tour organized by Micah Challenge. It was the centerpiece of the “Flushing Away Poverty Event”, which over thirty people attended. It drew attention to the 780 million people around the world who live without access to safe drinking water and the 2.5 billion people who do not have decent sanitation. Micah

Dr Aaron Charmers’ Publishes First Book! Congratulations to Tabor Adelaide’s MTC Head of School, Dr Aaron Charmers on his new book ‘Exploring the Religion of Ancient Israel’. Aaron Chalmers gives students a unique introduction to the religious and social world of ancient Israel. The first part explores the major religious offices mentioned in the Old Testament, including prophets, priests, sages and kings. As well as considering what these key people said and did, the author traces the process through which one became recognized as a prophet, priest or sage, and where each of these offices were located in ancient Israel. The second part of the book focuses on the beliefs and practices of the common people--the group that made up the majority of ancient Israel’s population. Exploring Spirituality in Youth Work Over two days, in early September, myself, eD Helmbold and Josh Spier met (off campus) with a group of experienced youth workers from various contexts and the editor of the Journal Youth Studies Australia to explore the question, “What is the place of spirituality in youth work?’ At the end of day one, Tabor facilitated a public forum to extend the question to the wider public. This series of conversations was part two of the project that I began at Durham in the UK. Our time with invited thinkers and individuals who attended the public forum, was wonderful, enriching, hopeful and very fruitful. This group has identified a model for doing spiritual work with young people that will be typed, edited and tweaked collaboratively. In addition to the model we have also identified a pathway to spiritual formation that is particular to the Australian context but will also have resonance for others. I anticipate both documents being ready for distribution by end of Sept or mid-Oct. Our group has adopted the name for itself of ‘The Youth Spirituality Project’ with the idea of re-convening in Melbourne around Easter time next year to focus on the research design and scope for an ongoing youth participatory, action-research project. We also have an in-principle agreement from the editor of Youth Studies Australia (who is a member of our group) for an issue of the journal to be dedicated to youth spirituality (a first in their 30-year history!) On the ground, one group member is currently consulting with a large public secondary school, with a high level of multi-cultural enrolments, on what it means to value spirituality and to be a faith-friendly school. It is likely that our new network will participate in this project. I anticipate some synergies between the Australian Youth Spirituality Network and The Durham Accord, which was the UK version of this project and the outcome of my fellowship earlier this year. Tabor Art Show
We are excited to announce an inaugural exhibition of artwork by students in the YITS and MTC courses that will be on view from October 25 through to November 9 at Tabor Adelaide! The Tabor Art Show is a new annual event and will be held in the Chapel, which will be transformed into an art gallery. The exhibition will highlight selected pieces made in the courses offered this year, including paintings, drawings, photographs, videos and installations. The opening night will be held from 6 to 8pm on Thursday, October 25 in the Chapel. There will be presentations by guest artists, food, live music and more. All art admirers are welcome!
New Tabor hub Have you noticed that the Refectory has changed its name to Tabor Hub?! This is the very beginning of an exciting new project to redevelop student spaces in and around the Tabor Adelaide campus. Our plan for 2013, is to make The Hub an attractive, vibrant place, with flexible comfortable furniture and areas for students to hang out, eat, and work in groups. Congratulations to VET Lecturer Deb Davis! Tabor VET is delighted to announce that Deb Davis, a highly valued Adjunct lecturer and assessor within our department, has been selected into the 2012/2013 Building Capability – Assessment Program - a dynamic professional development program conducted by the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST). This is a prestigious accomplishment and reflects Deb’s commitment and abilities in the VET training world. It will enable Deb to become a national leader in VET assessment. Well done Deb and all the best in the program!

Benchmarking Assessment Moderation in Four Colleges Tabor Adelaide, in collaboration with three other colleges, has been successful in securing a substantial grant from the Office for Learning and Teaching - part of the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education. This grant will support research into developing and testing models of benchmarking the moderation of assessment for private higher education providers. Dr Juhani Tuovinen, Senior Research Fellow, Graham Clarke Research Institute, Tabor Adelaide – Team Leader for the Project.
Subsequent to the persistence of our Senior Research Fellow, Juhani Tuovinen, and of course the generosity and foresight of the OLT, we can now proceed with the project. The research will be conducted over a period of two years and will focus on the Schools of Theology/Ministry and Education in each of the colleges. However, it is hoped that, where new models are developed and the testing results prove positive, the models will be readily transferable to other schools in the colleges as well as other private higher education providers across the country. It is likely that small departments and campuses of higher education in both public and private institutions will also benefit from this research. This is an opportunity for Tabor Adelaide and its partners to lead the way in ensuring quality improvements in student learning outcomes.

Benchmarking and moderation of assessment are generally recognised as important quality assurance processes in education and are key mechanisms for ensuring the quality and objectivity of student learning outcomes. Assessment benchmarking means comparing the assessment practices to external standards or to the practice of others, in order to improve the local practice. The Christian Heritage College, Qld, Tabor Victoria and Avondale College of Higher Education, NSW, are partnering Tabor Adelaide in this important research, though many more private higher education providers participated when this project was first initiated in 2010. However, trying to self fund this research was exceptionally difficult due to all the colleges’ funding restrictions at that time and therefore only slow progress was made.
