Prize Winning Staff and Students 2012 Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature Congratulations to Rosanne Hawke Rosanne Hawke, published author and Tabor Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, was honoured with the South Australian Children’s Literature Award on Saturday 3 March, by South Australian Premier, the Honourable Jay Weatherill. The ceremony was held at the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden and was timed to coincide with both the Adelaide Festival and Adelaide Writers’ week. After being shortlisted with five other children’s stories, Rosanne’s Taj and the Great Camel Trek took the prize. Rosanne explains ‘the text offers a tale of Taj and his camel Mustara as they trek with Ernest Giles to Perth in 1875. It is a great adventure and a tribute to the Afghan camel drivers and their journeys.’ Rosanne continues to captivate young audiences with her new novel The Messenger Bird; a haunting mystery set in South Australia’s mid north. The text follows a young woman Tamar, who rediscovers her love for music and the piano after finding an old piece of sheet music. This leads her to meet talented violinist Nathaniel who may hold the key to her future. Tamar is unwittingly drawn into a journey through time and music. Messenger Bird was officially launched on
March 7 in the Ira Raymond Exhibition Room, Barr-Smith Library at the University of Adelaide. Tabor Adelaide applauds Rosanne Hawke’s achievements as both a Tabor educator and an award winning writer.
Durham University Study Fellowship Dr Phil Daughtry will be a visiting fellow with St John’s College at Durham University, UK, from April 23 to June 20 this year. Amongst other things Phil is leading a two-day discussion on the place of spirituality in youth work, whilst incorporating a public, interactive lecture, on May 17-18. Phil has developed this initiative in partnership with Maxine Green (a leading UK writer on spirituality) and Dr Andrew Orton (a research fellow of Wesley Study Centre and St. Johns College, and a lecturer in the School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University). This conversation will draw together a small, selected group of thinkers from across the UK and act as a Regional Training Forum event for practitioners. The essence of this conversation will be captured on video as part one of a two stage process (a similar conversation to be held later in the year, based at Tabor Adelaide) and developed into a curriculum resource for youth worker training, ready for release in 2013. Phil is travelling with his wife, Claire, and together they are looking forward to exploring the region in and around Durham and various other places of interest in a series of weekend getaways. Tabor Adelaide offers their congratulations at such a wonderful achievement.

Poetry Prize
Book Contract
Current student Vanessa Brown is to be congratulated on winning first prize in the poetry competition at The Callington Architectural and Horticultural Show. Not only did her poem come first within the Special Needs Callington Division, she also won first within the Open Poetry Division and first prize for the whole fair! This meant she beat all the cakes, cattle and wares on display to take out the show winner and prove that her disability is no barrier to her creativity.
Congratulations to Aaron Chalmers!
Vanessa’s heartfelt poem called Myranth House reflects upon her encounter with a man, with multiple sclerosis, whilst in care. She speaks of the optimistic side of living with a disability; a side society often misses, and her gratitude toward both her carer and an unlikely friend. Vanessa began at Tabor as a student in the Humanities department in 2010, where she undertook some creative writing courses. In 2012 she continues to study in the area of VET to nurture her knowledge and love of religion.

Congratulations to Dr Aaron Chalmers, Head of Ministry, Theology, and Culture, who has just been offered a contract by Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, a major Christian publishing house, to have his second book published on the interpretation of the Old Testament Prophets. This book is based upon the subject that Aaron is teaching in semester one. Aaron’s first book on The Religion of Ancient Israel will be published by SPCK and InterVarsity Press later this year.
Publication of God and Science: in Classroom and Pulpit Congratulations to Dr Graham Buxton, Director of the Graeme Clark Research Institute, and Dr Mark Worthing, GCRI Senior Research Fellow, on the publication of God and Science: In Classroom and Pulpit (Mosaic Press, 2012). This book will form a resource for the God and Science Seminars that they will be running over the next month; the details of which can be found on the Tabor website. You can purchase a copy of this book for $20 from Reception (ground floor) or from the GCRI office (first floor). TEAR Australia and Tabor share a strong connection through a shared Christian faith and a willingness to serve the community. Working with Indigenous Australians and local Christian organizations around the world, TEAR Australia currently develops projects that aim to better the lives of the poorest and most marginalised people within society. On Sunday the 26th of February, at Unley Oval, three Tabor lecturers, Matt Gray, eDuard Helmbold and Joshua Spier participated in the third annual TEAR charity cricket match. Representing Team World X11, they versed team Dhumba; the same name given to TEAR’s Indigenous support program. Dhumba means to talk, tell or speak in Woi Wurrung language; a perfect name, considering TEAR Australia aims to talk with, tell the stories of and speak out with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Whilst the sky threatened to unleash a storm all day, thankfully the field stayed dry and Tabor staff were able to catch up with friends, raise money and of course play some cricket. Matt Gray reflects on their starring efforts. “Not that it mattered on the day but our team won! I scored 5 (which for me is fantastic), took a catch and bowled okay. eD took one of the GREATEST caught-andbowleds I think I’ve ever seen, hit a few fine runs and got bowled a few times too! Josh made 19 runs, took 3 wickets and took 2 easy catches.”

Although a little sore and worse for wear at the end of the day, the participants were pleased with their fundraising efforts and the success of the day as a whole. Tabor Adelaide looks forward to a continued positive partnership with TEAR Australia in the future and of course a lot more cricket!
