Liquid Bread Like many of us, I love eating out. There’s nothing like going to a restaurant and receiving a basket of warm bread before you know what you’re going to order. If the restaurant has a good hefeweizen, even better. The ties between baguettes and Belgian wits can be traced to wheat, a very important cereal grain used in many kinds of bread and beer. Beer wouldn’t be possible without grains that supply the starch and eventual sugars that enable the conversion to alcohol and carbon dioxide. The most common grain for beer making is barley because it’s easily filtered and its high levels of enzymes break down

starch. Wheat, however, doesn’t have the natural filtering capability that barley does. This doesn’t necessarily make it impossible to brew beer with wheat; wheat beers as we know them are brewed with barley, anywhere from 30 to 70 percent wheat. From ancient Babylonia to Bavaria, Belgium to Boston, wheat beers have seen their popularity diminish and rise again. Well known for their light color foamy head (due to its high protein content) and tart and fruity flavors, wheat beers are a refreshing choice for this time of year and pair well with many foods. The German, Belgian and American wheats can easily be found year-round, but it’s usually in the summertime that craft breweries produce seasonal styles available for a limited time. How do you know which ones to choose? With names like hefeweizen, weissbier, and wit to name a few, it’s easy to get confused about what you’re ordering. For starters, the lingo cannot only be tricky to pronounce but also to

understand. The name hefeweizen comes from the German words for yeast (hefe) and wheat (weizen). Hefeweizen is subtly hopped and naturally carbonated with fresh yeast in the bottle that contributes to its banana and clove flavor. One of my favorites from Germany is Tucher Helles Hefe Weizen, either on tap or in a bottle. Other ones to try worth noting and pretty easy to find at a good beer store or bar: Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, Brooklyner Weiss, Franziskaner Hefe-Weiss, and Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen. Belgian Wits are made with raw wheat and spiced with bitter orange peel and coriander. The word ‘Wit’ is Flemish for white, and you will often see them referred to as witbiers. You might also see them referred to as bière blanche, French for white beer. Highly carbonated and lightly spicy, these are great summer beers and match very well with salads. From Belgium, check out St. Bernardus or Dentergems. This popular style is also made in many other countries, from as far as Australia and Sweden, or as close as Canada (e.g. Unibroue’s Blanche de Chambly) and even locally right here in Central New York. If you want to try an American version, most restaurants and bars will carry Maine’s Allagash White Ale, Ommegang’s Witte, and Syracuse made Middle Ages Brewing Company’s Swallow Wit or Empire Brewing Company’s White Aphro. Wheat is an extremely versatile grain, and wheat beers are no exception.

Hefeweizen and witbiers are but only two kinds that are ready for you to try this summer. Look out for other wheat beer varieties such as Weizenbock (stronger version of hefeweizen), dunkelweizen (brewed with darker malts), or Kristallweizen (yeast is filtered out). Each variety has its own unique flavor worth savoring. As much as it would be a dream to go on a beer tour of Germany and Belgium, perhaps a shorter trip to a bigger city like New York could be a fun wheat beer expedition. In Manhattan alone, your head will spin from all the choices! Even closer are the breweries in and around Central New York, the Finger Lakes and Canada. These are great day trips and opportunities to explore local landmarks as well. For those lazy hazy days of summer, go to your local store that has an impressive beer selection and instead of grabbing your go-to six-pack on autopilot, look for a yummy wheat beer. Just as we can choose to eat a bagel, baguette, or English muffin, so we can choose from wheat beers. It’s true, I wouldn’t put a pat of butter in my beer (and neither should you!), but there’s a good reason it’s commonly referred to as liquid bread. It’s a good enough reason for me to skip the bread and drink the beer instead. Cheers! []

When Mad Max blazed his way across the desert this summer, it was the first time in 30 years that the postapocalyptic hero had graced the big screen. Despite the concerns and questions that surrounded the production, it was a resounding success, resulting in the best film of the summer. MAD MAX wasn’t the only franchise receiving the resuscitation treatment this season. It is baffling to come to the realization that it has been 13 years since the release of JURASSIC PARK 3. The film was a far cry from the original, and at the time, served as a prime example of a sequelbased industry that cared little about storytelling, and a lot more about bottom lines and profits. The fourth JURASSIC PARK installment has resided in production limbo for the past decade. It seemed inevitable that the film would eventually be made and released, but for one reason or another, it hadn’t yet come to fruition. Rumors were abound over plot-lines, characters, and settings, but nothing had been confirmed until the first trailers for JURASSIC WORLD were finally released. Jurassic World, located on the remote Costa Rican island of Isla Nubar, is the most popular theme park on the planet. Despite the tragic events that unfolded 22 years prior (as seen in JURASSIC PARK) it is now a fully functional vacation destination. Allowing visitors to ride in gyrospheres alongside friendly Apatosaurus’, providing them with a Shamu-style show featuring a massive Mosasaurus, and presenting them with the unique opportunity to watch a Tyrannosaurus Rex gobble up an unsuspecting goat, there seemed to be something for everyone. Despite the astonishing nature of the park, public interest had begun to wane, and according to a speech given by Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas-Howard) to investors, geneticists were given the task of creating new species of

dinosaurs. Park owner Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan) wasn’t too concerned with the ethics or consequences of his request, and encouraged the scientists to come of up with a creature that was bigger, stronger, and more ferocious than anything that had yet been seen. The latest beast to be cooked up in the lab was Indominus Rex. Though the true genetic makeup of the creature was kept under wraps, there was general knowledge that it had been spliced together with the DNA a number of predatory dinosaurs. Concerned that the dangerous dino could potentially pose a threat to the visitors of the park, Masrani asks Darling to bring in Owen Grady (Chris Pratt). Grady is a former military man who serves as a Velicoraptor trainer and researcher. He was meant to inspect the Indominus paddock, in an attempt to declare the enclosure as safe. Immediately upon arriving, he has his reservations about the mysterious dinosaur, and when he sees deep claw marks on the enclosure’s wall, he knows that Masrani and his Ingen Corporation counterparts had bitten off far more than they could chew. Predictably, things with Indominus go very, very wrong. After busting out of his enclosure, he begins to leave a pile of bodies in his wake. Dinosaurs and humans alike were fair game to

Make the most of these moments by heading over to 916 Riverside (formerly Castaways) located on the beautiful Oneida River at 916 County Rt. 37 in Brewerton. At 916 Riverside you will always find great food, friendly service and the best views around! 916 Riverside is open Tuesday through Friday at 4 pm and Saturday and Sunday at noon. Come over by land or by sea with plenty of parking and dockage available. With lots of seating and great views whether you are sitting inside in the dining room or outside at the tiki bar and deck you will always have the best seat in the house. Whether you are looking for a snack or a full dinner 916 Riverside has something for everyone and their menu is served inside and on the deck! Start you meal off with a dozen steamed little necks clams with drawn butter, soft pretzel sticks fresh from the oven, or the always favorite Utica greens. If you are in the mood for a quick meal try the Cajun catfish fish tacos, the 916 Riverside Melt (8oz Angus, caramelized onions, baby bellas, and smothered in provolone cheese) or the Asian steak wrap (steak, carrots, zucchini, peppers, in a spicy Asian marinade). If you have worked up an appetite then you should definitely check out the awesome entrees freshly prepared at 916 Riverside. Beef lovers can have their choice of Sirloin, NY Strip, Filet Mignon topped with anything you’d like (mushrooms, onions, or even shrimp!). They do a fabulous job with their unique chicken entrees such as Chicken Asiago (sautéed chicken, baby portabella mushrooms, grape tomatoes, topped with an asiago cream sauce) and their Chicken Herb Panko served over Utica greens. If looking out at the water puts you in the mood for seafood then you are in luck. Be sure to try their Haddock Castaways with fresh haddock, spinach and grape tomatoes or the Cajun Catfish, fried or broiled to perfection! One of the best things about 916 Riverside is that they offer a constantly changing menu with daily specials so you never know exactly what else they will have, you just know that it will be delicious!

Sara and I arrived at 916 Riverside on a perfect summer evening. The weather was just right, with sunshine and a slight breeze so we decided to sit outside overlooking the water. Our view was fantastic. It was a Thursday night, so 916 Riverside had a band playing at the outdoor stage, near the tiki bar, as part of their Budweiser Thursday Night Series. The music was rocking and we were having a blast! We decided to start our meal with some appetizers. We had to try the potato skins that were loaded with cheese, bacon and green onions and perfectly topped with sour cream! World Class Jazz Comes to Syracuse Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Buckwheat Zydeco & Lake Street Drive to Headline Jazz Fest Jazz, and jazz musicians hold a special place in my heart. You see, to play jazz right one has to know music theoretically at an extremely high level. I’m talking tip-top, astute, badass understanding of the music language, here. Jazzers understand music like you understand English. Perhaps more. Further, to do jazz right, one has to possess the spirit of an astronaut, because, well... to me, anyway... the whole thing is about exploration and invention, right here and right now. In this way jazz musicians are the true astronauts of music. They boldly go where no solo has gone before - evolving the tune one quarter-note at a time, based on what’s happening right now. They can take a simple nursery rhyme and bend, bump, twist and flip that ditty into a hi-tech piece of elaboration that almost always seems to introduce oneself to another part of their own soul. How can you not dig jazz? Jazz is a privilege. Then there’s the historical side. While jazz is a blast, it also marks and defines history in America in profound ways. Jazz is one of the quintessential expressions of true original America—documented in the musical freedom which is essential to jazz itself. With that, I find myself leaning forward in my seat with anticipation for this year’s M&T SYRACUSE JAZZ FEST 2015, which takes place at Onondaga Community College on July 17th and 18th. The roster of artists is outstanding. Founder and Executive Producer Frank Malfitano has assembled a 2015 lineup that again features an eclectic and trademark Syracuse Jazz Fest mash up of Artists and musical styles that have made Jazz Fest “The Northeast’s Largest Free Jazz Festival” and which has earned Jazz Fest “Best Musical Festival” honors and accolades for the past decade. Jazz Fest will feature performances by four Artists and groups that have each been ranked “Number One” in their respective categories. both in trouble. For many kids that are not physical, just the thought of having to fight back causes an ongoing sense of trauma. The best solution: Bullies must be caught and stopped. Variables must be understood. There are as many variables among bullying as there are sizes and abilities and personalities of children. In all instances, in every kind of bullying, the line is found somewhere near where normal childhood squabbling ends and cruelty begins. Most critically within this purview, when incidents arise, it is important to separate bullying from kids that are squabbling. You cannot have blanket punishment for participation. Punishing a child as a bully that is squabbling, or defending themselves or defending another gravely harms their sense of justice. Good kids have a strong sense of right and a strong sense of justice and they strongly feel these ideals should prevail. Authority must not miss-judge this. That is what Eddie was saying to me when he stated, “Bullies are wrong and somebody should do something about it.” My Grandson had this discussion with his Mom and Dad and their thinking goes straight to solutions when it comes to their son. Needless to say I have worshiped my daughter since I first looked into her eyes. She was about 3 minutes old. She has never let me down. After seeing an article and a post from News Channel 9 on Facebook that asked the question: “What do you think schools should do to curb bullying?” my daughter shared the article and then wrote the following post to her own Facebook friends. “I don’t normally comment on these threads but I did this time and then deleted it. Then I thought, I want to get an opinion from my friends. I had an idea that literally popped into my head. I haven’t thought it all the way through. What do you guys think? Not all kids are confident enough to stand up to a bully, but most of the time, every kid in school knows who the bullies are. What if each school had a sort of Bully Patrol. A group of kids, guided by a couple of responsible adults, that weren’t afraid to either stand up to bullies or report bullying. It seems if a bully knew they couldn’t get away with being mean, they might stop. And before you say kids should just learn how to deal with it, remember the countless kids who couldn’t and gave up their lives. If changing things saves one life, isn’t it worth it? Or is this idea too intrusive? Is it too much to ask kids to watch for this (but don’t we do that now)? Again, I haven’t thought it through but I would love a discussion on it. I just feel like kids are stronger when they stick together. If they had the support of a group...maybe they would deal with it better.” There it is. The Mustard Seed. Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University. A study in Britain found that at least half of suicides among young people are related to bullying. 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk for suicide, according to the study above. According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying. This is a national problem that has been attended to poorly. Many of the shootings and baffling behaviors in the news are born of this conduct. Victims must not be scarred. And Bullies must learn the severity of the wrong they are perpetrating. Please look at these photos. Just a few of millions. There are few things more disturbing than the look of seriously violated innocence. Many schools are working hard on this. Please acknowledge that historically status quo ideas have not worked. If you agree let my daughter’s concerns renew your thinking and be your mustard seed. Hold “Brainstorm Meetings” and develop unique and innovative ideas that are not in place. In just the second meeting educators will flow with ideas. Choose a few schools. Implement procedures. Monitor and record results. Keep what works and apply. Do it again. If one city stayed on this the result would be a national workable program.[]

Gender Rules - Then and Now After the Big Bang, after the molten iron, dirt, salt water, fresh water and gaseous atmosphere sifted and accreted into the planet we call home, unicellular organisms began splitting into more of the same sending forth genetic codes that adapted to the circumstances at the time. Primitive life forms reproduced themselves through parthenogenesis a self-involved process requiring no new clothes. At some point, plants and animals developed sex organs so nature could benefit from better combinations of better DNA. Obviously, there is more to life than sending new DNA combinations forward. Technologically advanced and cosmopolitan civilizations have lower birth rates. Still, from the time we arrive in our birthday suits, those who perceive us perceive us first in terms of our visible DNA delivery systems. We are all so much more. We all perceive our world and our worlds based on where we have been. When I sat down on my living room floor to stretch my hamstrings while watching Diane Sawyer’s television interview of Bruce

Jenner, I did not think I would relate to it. To my surprise, footage of Jenner running victorious across the finish line snapped me back to a time in my childhood when I was a fan of a few of the athletes who played for our parochial school. An older trusted confidante admonished me- nice girls would never like more than one boy and that the boys were athletes did not make the liking right. I internalized that false and negative message. At home, my mother told me about Babe Didrikson Zaharias, a woman athlete and Olympic star. My father told me that girls can’t play on boys’ basketball teams and there are no girls’ basketball teams to play on. There was no Title IX. I focused on playing with dolls and tried not imagining myself shooting foul shots. I surreptitiously watched roller derby on TV before Mass. I kept my

Last month’s book review, Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll by Douglas Brode, focused more on the transition from the fifties to the sixties. This book spends its time on the sixties into the seventies - the Flower Power, LSD, Drugs & Hippie culture that grew - believe it or not - out of a little canyon tucked into the hills of Los Angeles, and home to not just the flower children of the sixties rock ‘n’ roll scene, but before that, the wild children of the early movies. What was it about this odd little canyon - featured in several songs of the era - that drew the creative misfits and seemed to encourage a hedonistic, even self-destructive lifestyle? “Beginning in the mid-1960s, a string of successful rock bands emerged out of Laurel Canyon, a neighborhood of Los Angeles tucked away in the hills north of Sunset Boulevard. From the success of bands like the Byrds and the Mamas and the Papas, and singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Jimmy Webb, Walker proposes Laurel Canyon as rock’s answer to Jazz Age Paris. It’s a plausible concept, but one he stumbles to elaborate past the length of a magazine feature. The journalist, who lives in Laurel

was hundreds of miles away) and a digression on the history of cocaine.” - Publisher’s Weekly Well, I can’t say I agree wholly with this review, as the author offered an apology up front for digressing from time to time from both the chronological order of events, and even from his theme, as he attempts to bring all the influences and influencers into the tale of the Canyon. For anyone who was a child of that era, or those who missed it altogether, Walker brings insights into the bands, their ideas, the hidden meaning of the lyrics, and the drug culture that both fueled their creativity and brought about ultimate disaster. And for anyone who was not tuned in to the nuance of “who was who” in the music of the era, much of what Walker writes brings “wow” moments: how deeply influential David Crosby was (and deeply troubled); the almost mythic quality of Mama Cass Elliott (and her strange power to bring together artists who would change the course of music history - and oh, by the way, she didn’t die choking on a sandwich); the power Frank Zappa had in shaping much more rock history than he ever made with his own music or band. More than that, the story of Laurel Canyon extends back to the early film days, when, originally developed as “Bungalow Land” (an effort to compete with “Hollywood Land”) it became home to Wally Reid, Tom Mix (Zappa lived in his “log cabin”), Clara Bow, Richard Dix, Norman Kerry, Ramon Navarro, Bessie Love, and, some believe, Harry Houdini. Wild orgies and mysterious goings-on have been reported from its earliest days, and many of these early Hollywood notables were as disturbed and rebellious as the Rock ‘n’ Roll icons who came to the Canyon years later. Reading through the Amazon reviews, it’s hard to know whether the nay-sayers have knowledge Walker lacks (the biggest criticism is factual error, but given that this was the era before the Internet, it’s much more difficult to find sources and piece together everything he says in this jam-packed book), but one thing stands out: Laurel Canyon is one of those places that rightly inspires interest and carries with it a mystery. []

To many of the ladies that worked out at Kelly Lyn, (some for a few years and others since the doors opened forty three years ago); this was more than just a gym. This was a place that was filled with years of friendships, bonding, and love. This was a place where you could reveal your diagnosis of breast cancer, and your girlfriend painfully told you about her divorce. You could talk about how hard it was for you to be sandwiched between caring for aging parents, taking care of your kids, and being a good wife. Americana Vineyards in Interlaken is particularly dog-friendly. When she’s not

swimming in the vineyard pond or waiting patiently for hand-outs from restaurateurs, Rubie, the resident chocolate lab, greets all guests at the tasting room entrance. Since she was a puppy, Rubie and her late bother Max have been Cayuga Lake Wine Trail ambassadors. In his memory, Rubie wrote her third children’s book titled “My Brother Max”. Rubie and her family recently hosted an extremely successful event called Woofstock in Max’s honor. It was the third year of the event and Rubie and her supporters collectively raised over $6,000 in cash and materials to support four local dog shelters. Owner Joe Gober said, “We’re extremely proud of our accomplishments. The Americana Vineyards team has always been animal rights activists. I often use this line… “I like you...I hope you drop dead!!” Immediately, most people are, of course, taken aback until they think about it for a bit. I didn’t say drop dead right here and now. I said drop dead...eventually. Think about it for a minute and you will find yourself...reluctantly as always, agreeing with me. What are your eventual options? You could just keel over shopping or at dinner OR end up dying after a long and difficult fight with cancer. You could just die quietly in your sleep OR spend your last days drooling over yourself demented in the nursing home. Now, with this perspective I think you’ll agree that a short painless expiration is preferable to a long lingering finish. In essence...dropping dead, when you consider the other options, is quite desirable. What brings this issue to mind this month are two separate articles in the medical literature recently as well as my wife having to take a CPR class for her new job. I have been feeling pretty good about my medical pronouncements recently because things that I have been saying for years are finally making front page news in the Journal of the American Medical Association and in the New England Journal of Medicine and in the Cleveland Clinic etc... From Charles Krauthammer writing in the Washington Post about the dissatisfaction of doctors, to articles in JAMA about how diabetic care has to be personalized to the patient, to articles in the NEJM about the difficult issue of pain management with chronic opioids, and including two articles regarding CPR. The first article was about improvements in CPR but when you drilled down to the actual numbers what you find is that even in the best of hands out of hospital resuscitation gives you less than 1 in 10 chance of surviving to the hospital. Note this is not intact survival. It’s having

a heart beat when you reach the emergency room. “Survival” often means living with major brain damage. The 1 in 10 chance is of course very optimistic...the more realistic number is that less than one person in 20 will survive long enough to reach the emergency room doors. They never talk about the part wherein most people who have been successfully resuscitated are never the same again. This is not the way I want to go! Let me take a moment here because I know a lot of people are going to respond angrily to this article. They’re going to say they saw someone or know someone who was successfully resuscitated. Well, it’s got to work right sometime but I think when someone collapses in the store people rush to pound on their chest...they could have just had a faint or a seizure...but in the stress and urgency of the moment they get CPR even if they don’t really need it...then they wake up and it’s a “save from CPR.” Don’t take my word for it... ask any ambulance attendant or an emergency room nurse about the effectiveness of CPR. How often do people with no heartbeat get successfully brought back to life with no significant deficits? Also, don’t get me wrong I am a big believer in defibrillation but not CPR. If someone collapses due to very irregular heartbeat called ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation...hooking them up to the defibrillator can restore a regular rhythm quickly and easily and the person will usually not have significant brain injury. This is a whole different kettle of fish from pounding on someone’s chest so hard which, if done properly, causes rib fractures and other injuries even as you try to save the person’s life. The second article on CPR was an editorial commenting that even in the hospital with the plethora of trained personnel the survival to get to the ICU was only 20% and again these are people who survived just to be transferred to the ICU. They don’t give out the figures for the extent of brain damage. This article said we should be doing less CPR in part due to financial considerations because the last 90 days of people’s lives can be frighteningly expensive continued on pg 41

I’ve either learned something, or I’m learning to recognize BS. My second experiment was perhaps the more beneficial of the two: spend a little time away from all the noise. I realized that I hadn’t listened to music in while because I was spending a lot of time listening with half an ear to radio, tv, or checking in on the major social networks. I turned on the tunes, turned off the chatter, and within a few days, felt infinitely more at peace. I’m not suggesting that it’s a good idea to stay uninformed - that’s ultimately dangerous. I do think, though, that every so often, just like getting out in nature, we get away from the un-ending and often ugly national debate that technology has enabled. Once upon a time, when there were only three TV channels (plus PBS) and a handful of radio stations that concentrated on music (with news “on the hour”), news was filtered (for better or worse), validated, and delivered with a certain amount of restraint. Now cell phone cameras and setup events “make” news, and opinion and arguments dominate the news hours. Most of it is designed to get our blood boiling whether we agree or disagree. And much of it is, as noted in Experiment 1, not even “true.” Of course, it’s not a permanent fix, and sadly, we will probably end up sadder, and less wise people as our filters become more refined, and we “hear what we want to hear and disregard the rest.” Still, I recommend a periodic trial of both tests, if for no other reason than to give it a rest. []

In Vanity Fair, Caitlyn Jenner addresses how she felt as Bruce, “Underneath my suit I have a bra and panty hose…they know nothing about me.” It might be lucky for Caitlyn now that the young Bruce Jenner then, dressed in his sister’s clothing and wearing his mother’s scarves, always made it safely back into his family’s townhouse before the wrong person saw him. In the not so distant past, people not conforming to other people’s preconceived gender notions might find themselves beaten, medicated, electroshocked, institutionalized or all four. Bruce Jenner covered up and ran from his femininity by striving to be the strongest male he could be. People forced to dissociate parts of themselves rarely live happy lives and their families and friends feel that unhappiness. Bruce Jenner’s children felt Bruce’s discontent. Those interviewed for Vanity Fair say that as Bruce transitioned, they got their father back. Many questions about Caitlyn involve whom she will date and Jenner remains circumspect. For most people, gender itself equates to sex. Gender and sex are different. Everyone has gender; not everyone has sex or wants sex but when people judge people based on gender, they judge them in terms of sex. Our sex organs serve to define gender whether the gender-defined person uses those sex organs or not. A newborn’s opportunities in life are expanded or limited based on one

particular body part with society tacitly encouraging boys to try out those body parts while sometimes demeaning girls who do. Much modern day sex-related discussion revolves around how to keep reproductive apparatus from creating new DNA combinations. We are all chemical beings with reproductive related chemical systems programmed to activate during a timeframe often out of sync with the demands of our current socioeconomic system. The same week Buzz Bissinger’s Vanity Fair piece “Call me Caitlyn” hit the marketplace, several major news outlets reported on a new drug geared toward treating low libido in women. Flibanserin is a drug a woman would take daily, altering her brain chemistry so she can feel more sexual overall. Flibanserin might allow a low- libido woman to feel some sort of baseline sexual anticipation while she writes reports at work, gardens or prepares lunch. Side effects include sudden drops in blood pressure and fainting. Flibanserin lowers serotonin while raising dopamine levels. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter connected with the higher sex drive of teenage boys. I try to keep up with new neuroscientific developments and writing as a free thinker with a couple long ago gender-related axes to grind, I wonder just how far human consciousness has evolved when experts are so quick to medicalize our individual natures. Of her own individual nature, Caitlyn Jenner said, “If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying ‘You just blew your entire life.’” Jenner did not. but my rejection of CPR is not based on finances. I am a doctor not an accountant. My point is that there is a time and a place for everyone to be born and for everyone to die. For us to attempt to intervene usually does not end well for the patient nor for the family for that matter. I call for a respect of death. If you are religious, the line I would use is to say “If the Lord calls you home which He will do eventually, and He gives you an express pass by having you collapse suddenly and painlessly in your sleep let’s say...Why would you or anyone else want to delay it?” If you’re not religious, I point out the basic facts that when your heart gives out your brain and kidneys usually follow and instead of a dignified moment of silence for you as you pass you get instead days or weeks of slowly worsening in the intensive care unit until some doctor’s sad duty is to suggest to the family it’s time to turn the machines off and let the patient meet their end peacefully. It doesn’t have to be that way. We should have a better respect for the quality of healthy living and not try to deny aging or death. Of course this is a hard sell in a country obsessed with youth and looks. We have all kinds of celebrations when people give birth and I’m not saying we should celebrate death but we certainly should acknowledge it in a less desperate manner than we do today. Again there are always exceptions and cold water drowning etc. may justify CPR but for the run-of-the-mill patient who collapses in the parking lot I personally don’t feel that I am doing them any favors when I perform CPR. I know it’s very unlikely to result in any quality time for the patient. For a doctor trained to help people, not taking action is difficult but I’ve learned through a fairly long career so far that sometimes the best action is no action. As you know CPR, until recently, has involved pounding on the chest and attempting to breathe for the person but the American Red Cross is abandoning the concept of breathing for the patients stating that pounding on the chest alone produces the same results as pounding and breathing. I propose to you that the reason they abandoned the breathing part of CPR is because it doesn’t work well, but then again I don’t believe that the pounding on the chest works well either. If a procedure works only one time out of 20 that to me is not successful. You know I love my mama but I hope she passes quickly and painlessly when her time finally comes. Making someone a Do Not Resuscitate or having a MOLST form or Health Care Proxy gives patients the chance to have some say in what’s done when they get sicker. Making someone a DNR doesn’t mean put them in a corner and ignore them. It means that when it’s obvious to health professionals and family alike that the end is near we treat the patient with dignity and not as a piece of meat. That people are given the option to die at home or in a comfortable setting surrounded by their family and friends, not being subjected to what I think is cruel and unusual punishment in a frantic environment during their final moments. Many times my job as a geriatric specialist is to tell people that less may be more. Maybe you need less medicines. Maybe you need less testing at a certain age. Maybe we should look ahead and make plans for that final day whenever that might come. That’s something that each patient and doctor should decide together. You didn’t have any choice about how you came into this world but at least here in America you have plenty of choices about how you’re going to go out. A little planning done ahead of time can make a huge difference. []

Chicken Fricassee Recipe by Food From Portugal

Ingredients:

Directions:

1 chicken broken into pieces 7 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion Nutmeg (to taste) Oregano (to taste) 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 7 tablespoons white wine 1 chicken stock cube 1 1/4 cups water 2 egg yolks Pepper (to taste) Juice of one lemon Parsley (to taste) Salt (to taste)

1. Season the chicken with salt, nutmeg, pepper and oregano. 2. In a pan, place the olive oil, the chopped onion and leave to sauté over low heat until the onion starts to turn golden. Add the chicken pieces and cook about 20 minutes until turns slightly golden. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon. Then add the flour, stir, add the white wine, water and the chicken stock cube, stir, and cook about 25 minutes with the pan covered. Stir once in a while. 3. Place the egg yolks in a bowl along with the lemon juice and mix well. Remove the pan briefly from heat, add the previous mixture and wrap well. Bring to heat again about two minutes. Turn off the heat and sprinkle with chopped parsley. 4. Serve the chicken with roasted potatoes or linguine. Pairs well with white wine.
