It’s Go Time for Showtime I was out at Sharkey’s a few weeks ago enjoying a warm Wednesday summer evening with some friends and some rock and roll. I almost didn’t go. Wasn’t feeling so hot. But my pals encouraged me to come along, anyway, and I’m glad they did. I arrived during a Dave Matthews song. As I was strolling across the lot to where the music was I couldn’t believe how closely the singer’s voice was to ole Dave’s. Enough to wonder...? What’s going on here...? And the rest of the groovy take was pretty

musicians. You can’t get away with doing this one right as a mediocre musician. These guys played this so well, that I’d be willing to bet a hundred bucks that if Sir Paul himself was in the audience, he’d not only nod in approval, but he’d also spit on the ground that he’s no longer the only fellow who can do this one “right.” Kudos and big hats off to Jerry Crimmins who effortlessly delivered this tune to us all on a silver platter. All I could say was “wow” with a generous dose of expletives to support the impact of the wow Showtime is: Jerry Crimmins/Percussion and Vocals, Joe Rossi/Drums, feeling. One after another the cool Justin Smithson/Guitar and Vocals, Mike Marro/Keyboards and Vocals, takes kept coming. All with superb Jose Lopez/Bass and Vocals proficiency, musical prowess respect to the original popular versions, darned spot-on. From their it look easy. I sat there wondering, “how come this very fresh song list (YAY! I did not hear “Moondance,” band isn’t out there backing up some superstar?” and or other obvious selections like a lot of the other bands “Why don’t they write their own stuff and just go hit-it, play!) No. These fellas play the other songs... something already?” Their sound would be tremendous on the big of which I am a huge fan. Some of the songs are deep arena stage setting, as they already have this quality cuts. Some of the songs are B-side-ish. Some of them about them in a very polished way. are very popular, but, require more than the average I pulled aside bass player Jose Lopez, introduced chops of the going musicianship rate. myself, and asked him to take part in this column to tell us more about this group. CS: Thanks for doing this interview, Jose. JL: Thanks for reaching out and giving us this opportunity, Chuck. CS: I really enjoy and appreciate your group and the musicianship you all possess. What a treat!

JL: Thank you. CS: Ok, let’s get started. How long has Showtime been together? JL: Showtime started in 1997, so 18 years. CS: Based out of Utica, right? JL: We say Utica, but the band started in Ilion, NY. The five current members live in Frankfort, Ilion and Herkimer. The Mohawk Valley. CS: Who’s in it?

JL: Jerry Crimmins/ Percussion and Vocals, Joe Rossi/ Drums, Justin Smithson/ Guitar and Vocals, Mike Marro/ Keyboards and Vocals, Jose Lopez/ Bass and Vocals CS: The first thing that struck me about your group is the great big chops. The second thing that struck me was your unique and somewhat eclectic song selection. How do you select your play list? JL: First or all, thank you. Second, we play what we want to play. Whether it’s a new song that catches our ear, and is blowing up the radio now, or an older tune that we’ve just always wanted to jam. We feel that bands can play anything they want, and it will be well received as long as they play it well. CS: How did you get started in music? JL: Joe and I are first cousins, and we come from a very musical family, so we grew up in it. Jerry came from a similar background. Justin has been playing guitar since he was around 4. Mike has played multiple instruments for many years. CS: What are your thoughts on the Central New York music scene? JL: The music scene here in CNY is alive and well! There are so many great musicians, bands and fans! There definitely aren’t as many venues as there used to be, which THE PERFECT BLEND OF BAR, KITCHEN & ATMOSPHERE makes finding gigs a lot harder, but people still $5 Martini want to hear live music, $1 Off Draft and we still want to give it Wed-Fri 4-7pm $1 Off Wine to them. CS: Do you guys ever ? ? ? write? Mondays ? 7-9pm JL: Yes, we recorded an albums worth of original Tuesday tunes around 12 years August 18th ago. We played a few original shows, and got a pretty good response. CS: Please share a highMon-Sat beginning at 4pm light story. Saranac Thursday and the place was jammin! The lead singer/guitarist of Rusted Root (Mike Glabicki) was in Utica. (He had played a local college that evening) A friend of ours (Lenny Milano Jr.) told him that we played a couple of his tunes, and that we were playing just down the street. He came down and joined us on stage for two of his songs, and the place went crazy! He told us the band sounded great, and he was honored to have us play his songs. CS: How about some healthy advice for an up and coming musician? JL: The hard work is not what goes on while you’re on stage, it’s everything else. Individual practice, band practice, finding gigs, moving gear, advertising, leg work, networking, making connections, getting recognized, getting your foot in the door. That is where the hard work is. The playing, the on stage time, the people dancing, singing, smiling and cheering, that’s your reward. Work for it! CS: I like that. What kind of plans does Showtime have for the future? JL: Well, we started this band in high school. If you had told me then that almost 20 years later we’d still be playing this much, in front of so many people, I probably would’ve said, “yeah, right,” but, here we are. We’re gonna ride this wave as long as we can. We’re going to keep working hard at what we do, and hope that people keep enjoying what we do. CS:Where can we find more about you? Online? JL: We have two pages on Facebook. One is a fan page that is just Showtime. The other is actually a friend page just like everyone else has, and that one is Show Time. You can like our fan page, and friend request us on our friend page. Our gigs are listed under Events on our fan page. There are pictures, videos and posts on both. CS: Thanks, again, Jose for taking time to chat with us. See you August 5th at Sharkey’s. JL: Thank you, Chuck. My pleasure. Looking forward to seeing you. enough to travel to Europe and explore some of craft beer’s finest offerings. Then 2008 happened and I was back to my college level finances but with a craft beer palate and hankering for more nomadic ways. As time has passed, I’ve learned to be crafty – from volunteering at brew fests to driving to destinations within reach. Luckily, living in this part of the country makes it easy to take a jaunt to the Finger Lakes, New York City, New England and Canada. Having said that, everything still has a price – from rising gas prices to lodging and buying great beer we can’t get here. My dilemma has been to find a delicate balance between trying great craft beer in other places, all while not maxing out my credit card. Honestly, you really don’t have to leave Central New York to get some fine handcrafted beer at a decent price – that’s the beauty of this place. Since I’m The Hoppy Nomad, I can’t stay in one place for too long without catching the travel bug. Just recently I was in Burlington, Vermont for the Vermont Brewer’s Fest. I never thought I would be able to go since the tickets for that event sell out in minutes. How did I do it? I’ll tell you how and you just might be inspired to try this yourself. Once I got on the website and saw that there were no tickets left for the two-day event, I didn’t let that discourage me and close the tab. I found the “Contact Us” link and directly wrote to the event planners and asked if I could volunteer for the event. I immediately received a response and was told that I could! My next issue Museum • Tues-Sat 1-4 was lodging. Mizu Japanese Steakhouse We know that you work hard for your money and so when you go out you want to get the most bang for your buck. Why not get the most out of your night out and let dinner be the show? At Mizu Japanese Steakhouse you will have a delicious meal prepared right in front of you by talented and entertaining hibachi chefs and dinner is the show! Mizu is conveniently located at 2841 Erie Blvd East in Syracuse. You can also check them out online at www. Mizujapanesesteakhouse.com. If you have never been to Mizu you should know that they specialize in using the highest quality ingredients to prepare a fantastic meal on the hibachi as you watch! You can look forward to flaming onion volcanoes and trying your best to catch zucchini in your mouth masterfully tossed by the chef! Mizu is a great place for a cozy date night or a meal that is fun for the whole family! Mizu also offers unbeatable prices including their Thursday through Sunday Pick 2 Hibachi Combo where you chose two main portions, side of vegetables, shrimp or mushroom appetizer, choice of white, brow, or fried rice or noodles, soup and salad all for just $17.99! My friend Derry and I arrived at Mizu on a warm July evening and as soon as we walked in we were immediately greeted by both a friendly hostess and the smell of delicious food being prepared. We were promptly seated at our table. Our friendly waiter began by welcoming us to Mizu and asking if everyone had been here before so she could explain how hibachi at Mizu works and what to expect. The family that we were seated with had never been to a hibachi before and their excitement grew with the explanation and watching the chefs performance at other tables. We began our order with a sushi

seaweed wrapped roll appetizer. We stared our meal with two of the house specialty sushi rolls. First we had the Out of Control Roll featuring tuna, yellowtail, salmon, avocado, and asparagus topped with seared tuna, yellowtail, salmon scallion, tobiko and chef’s special sauce. This gigantic roll had flavors that were truly out of control and would delight the palate of any sushi lover. Then we had the Insanity Roll. This roll was loaded with Spicy lobster and cucumber, topped with seared steak, sesame seeds, scallions in chili ponzu sauce. Believe me when I tell you that it was insanely delicious. For our entrees we both ordered the hibachi shrimp and filet mignon with fried rice. Our waitress quickly brought our first course, a cup of warm and flavorful soup. Our next course was a house salad with freshly made ginger dressing which is just the perfect amount of sweet and tangy. While we were enjoying our first two courses our talented chef was busy making our fried rice look like a panda and then making it into a heart and used the spatula to make it beat. Our chef even cracked an egg by catching it on the side of his spatula. Our chef also began cooking our shrimp flambé continued on pg 8

Beer Traveling on a Beer Budget

to the brew fest together, continued from pg 6 where I afford lodging, I went to a great website called couchsurfing.com. It’s a community met his of people who open up their homes (apartments, futons, rooms, etc.) for free. I’ve friends couchsurfed twice and have had great experiences. I gave it a shot and received and samfive responses. One fellow happened to be a craft beer aficionado and was working pled some the event as well. Perfect! The most I spent was on gas and pizza. With my bags in great tow, car loaded up, I drove through the beautiful Adirondacks to get to Vermont. My Vermont host was gracious and kind and had a large futon for me in the living room. We went and New England beer. It Elegant Dinning at Casual Prices was one of the best beer experiences I’ve had so far and would highly recommend it to those of you who are open-minded (most craft beer lovers are!) and will½ price wine by the glass ing to have new experiences. You really don’t have to have much to enjoy the pleasures that beer and travel will bring to you – the two go hand in hand in my 315.214.4267 opinion. With clever planning and a little bit of Internet searching and networking, you can make anything happen! I did and will continue to do so, even if my budget at some point starts to increase – the experiences I’ve had have been so memorable I don’t think Tue-Fri 11:30a-2:30p I would change how I travel for beer. Sure, you can drink a Vermont beer at a local bar, but why not experience their scene, their small microbreweries you’ve Tue-Sat 5p-10p never heard of, and enjoy yourself? So if you think you can’t afford it, think twice and you’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish on a limited budget. The next time you think you can’t visit a brewery or www.317SYR.com go to a brew fest that’s more than 100 miles away, 317 Montgomery Street, Syracuse remember what I told you and have faith! Cheers! I’ve specifically admitted to not being an expert in viticulture or viniculture, but one thing that I can certainly claim expertise in, is enjoying wine. I certainly have my preferences, but I do appreciate everything from a sweet Niagara or concord, otherwise known as “big-kid-grape-juice”, to drier varietals like Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Grigio. My preferences change based on the weather, my mood, the setting, and much more. I call myself an equal-opportunity drinker, always on the search for my new favorite wine. We all know that indulging too much in the pursuit of the perfect bottle can be a challenge, so I have put together some tips for mastering a safe, enjoyable and successful wine search party. First and foremost, if you are planning to visit multiple

wineries’ primary concern. Besides, drivers are treated like royalty by the drinkers as well as the wineries. Believe me, the grape juice alone is totally worth the drive. If nobody in your group volunteers to drive, there are plenty of affordable transportation companies located throughout the Finger Lakes. Be sure to begin your day by eating a hearty breakfast. Drinking wine on an empty stomach can heighten the effects of alcohol. I also recommend that you pack a small cooler with bite-size snacks. Some of my favorites are cheese, crackers, nuts, fruits and veggies. Keeping a stash of snack items in the car can sometimes slow the effects of alcohol. Even better, I would plan to stop for lunch midday. Many of the wineries have outdoor tables where you can enjoy a self-packed picnic lunch with a spectacular view. The Trail also has some of the best restaurants, bistros, cafes and shops in the region. Another recommendation – is hydration. I would try to drink water between every stop. You’ll thank me the morning after as well! Bring your own water bottle and refill it before leaving each winery. Keep in mind too, that you do not need to finish every sample. Buckets are provided for spitting or dumping. I suggest planning which wineries you will visit before setting out. If you have a large group, typically of 10 or more, wineries prefer that you call ahead to make reservations so that they are properly staffed to give your group the right amount of attention. Four to six wineries a day, perhaps two or three before and two or three after lunch is a fair goal. You won’t want your palate getting overwhelmed. All area information centers should have a copy of the Trail Map & Guide, or you can download a digital version directly from our website to help with planning. Also, because we’re all guilty of over-imbibing once in a while, I certainly recommend staying overnight in one of the many great accommodation locations along the Trail if need be. Spend a couple days here, experience the breathtaking views of wine country and taste all there is to taste, responsibly of course! For more tasting and touring tips, call the office at 800-684-5217 or visit www.cayugawinetrail.com. Cassandra Harrington is the executive director of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. Polonaise Premium European Foods Sometimes delicious dreams come true. Polonaise Premium European Foods opened their doors and their hearts to Syracuse nearly two years ago with the idea of bringing mouthwatering Polish food to Syracuse. Opened by brother and sister team Adam Rozum and Bozena Slota, M.D. they have done that and so much more. They specialize in homemade hot food, a deli counter, a huge selection of eastern European groceries, and beer. Polonaise is open seven days a week and located at 3006 Erie Blvd. East in Syracuse (entrance on Headson Dr.) Come in and try “The

fish, and sardines from Latvia. They also always carry goat’s milk. These delicacies are rarely available at chain grocery stores and if they are they carry a gigantic price tag. Polonaise prides themselves on keeping their prices low and keeping items their customers request in stock. If you have a sweet tooth Polonaise can help, they also offer a wide selection of chocolates and sweets from Poland, Ukraine and Russia. You may not know this but Polish chocolate is considered some of the best chocolate in the world. They even have a line of Polish skin care products called Ziaja! Polonaise has a delicious hot and cold food bar. You can grab lunch and eat inside or outside or take a better than homemade meal home! Most of the dishes are prepared on site, in their beautiful and spotlessly clean industrial kitchen. You have to start with some of their Polish style golabki. Fabulous pierogis are a treat that you won’t find just anywhere. Those pierogis that come frozen in a box have nothing on the real deal. These pierogis are handmade and filled with sauerkraut and mushrooms, or farmer cheese and potato. The pierogis are all vegetarian. You can also find perfectly seasoned old-world latkes and creamy blintzes, prepared Prosit! fresh, like grandma used to make! They also bake fresh bread German and Polish style bread on the premise daily. German style bread utilizes very specific ingredients to adhere to German bread laws, and Polonaise happily follows them. They also feature a selection of hot stews and soups. They have a mushroom soup that is rich and creamy and a hunters stew jam packed with kraut, meats, and seasoning. I had the opportunity to sample nearly everything from the bar and I can assure you that every single mouthwatering bite was more delicious than the bite before. I even tasted some of the sausages, perfectly topped with the best mustard I have ever tasted! The best part of Polonaise is the warm fuzzy feeling that you get when you walk in the door. I heard one customer say that the smells remind him of walking into his grandmother’s house, which always puts a smile on his face. It is decorated with polish art and books to read. The curators of this atmosphere, Adam and Bozena Premium European Foods were born and raised in Poland and 3006 Erie Blvd., Syracuse (entrance from Headson Dr.) have done an incredible job of bringing

They offer a large selection of the best smoked hams and sausages around. If you have never tried true polish sausage and kielbasa you are in for a real treat. The herbs and spices that are used are very unique and distinct from the Italian sausage and ham that you are used to. They also specialize in Russian caviar, smoked

PRIMARY ELECTION - Thursday, September 10, 2015

6:30AM Wednesday-Sunday

GENERAL ELECTION - Tuesday, November 3, 2015 For the following to take place please make sure you vote in the Primary. And then the General Election. “Doing the Work”. Mary Nelson is a woman that shines a bright light on the better side of what we are. A friend recently explained to me that Mary was taking a run for the Syracuse Common Council’s 4th District. I had heard a little about Mary’s Community Service so I decided to do a little research. I quickly became awestruck by the beauty and ability of Mary Nelson. More of us should have this wonderful quality that causes us to jump right into the fray where help is needed to the most. Mary and the Community had become all too familiar with the hardships that are forced on the Community by shootings and drugs. The final blow was when Mary’s nephew died of gunshot wounds in June of 2002. In her grief she was moved into action. As I go on there is a very important wisdom we should take from this: “Mary grew up in the Community. She knows all of its love and beauty. And she knows and has lived the cost of the infiltration of guns and drugs. She is perceptive and compassionate. She is able to form from her life experience the processes needed that cause wholesome thinking among our young. For Mary her deeds must contain the answers. great eastern European foods as well as Polish hospitality to Syracuse. What really sets Polonaise apart from other shops is the knowledgeable and dedicated owners. They are pretty much the nicest and most accommodating people you could ever meet. They speak several languages, including Spanish, which really makes their customers feel right at home. Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

Don’t you remember? The experts claim that one in three Americans will suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Suffering is a relative word because honestly most of the suffering done with Alzheimer’s is the suffering of the caregivers as the patient themselves is usually unaware of their condition. You suffer through cancer...you suffer through depression... your family members are the ones that suffer when you have severe memory loss. Alzheimer’s is listed as one of the top 6 causes of death in America but before it kills you it takes a toll on you, your dignity, your family, your bank account, etc. Dementia is probably the #1 diagnosis in the nursing home and therefore at $8,000 a month, per patient, it’s probably one of the most expensive diagnosis to treat on a national level. Maybe one of those wildly expensive chemotherapy agents are more expensive but usually they’re used for 6 weeks or 3 months whereas dementia can persist for decades. I don’t actually use the term Alzheimer’s much…It’s really a diagnosis that can be made with brain evaluation at autopsy and it’s just a name...I prefer to call it by the more practical and

less charged name...memory loss. That’s what I see and that’s what I try to treat. You could call it Alzheimer’s, you could call it Binswanger’s disease, you could call it Lewy body dementia, you could call it senile dementia, you could call it multiinfarct dementia but the bottom line is the person has a functional problem with their memory, usually short-term more than long-term. They might remember the name of their second grade teacher but they sure don’t remember where they left the car keys or that they wrote two checks to the cable company and one to the gas company. There are some new and upand-coming brain scans that might help decide whether you have in particular the typical Alzheimer’s changes, but it doesn’t matter much since

the treatments are all the same. There is no good reliable blood work to aid in diagnosis. Diagnosing dementia is like diagnosing Parkinson’s. It is best done by the same observer evaluating the patient over time and seeing what changes occur. Unfortunately in the modern doctor’s office the typical patient can get in and get out and be quite demented but not picked up by the doctor if he doesn’t ask the right questions. In an office visit with the doctor checking the blood pressure, checking the meds, checking the cholesterol and attending to any issues with the insurance company it’s hard to step back and ask “by the way can you tell me the name of the last 3 presidents? By the way can you remember these 3 words and draw me o’clock etc?” It is not particularly hard to do. You just have to have the time and interest... I have seen many people that were really having a lot of trouble with their memory before it was picked up by their healthcare professional because they didn’t think to ask the right questions. require a psychologist, or a neurologist, or any specialist to diagnose dementia. So dementia is diagnosed by asking patients questions. You can use formal testing like the Mini-cog, or the MMSE, or the SAGE questionnaire, or you can diagnose it informally. Once you look for it, it’s not hard to diagnose. On the other hand many people have mild cognitive impairment and never go on to dementia and it is hard to determine who will progress and who will not, and that’s why it is best managed

over time by the same professional doing serial observations. Now, the treatment for dementia is unfortunately quite limited. None of the current prescription medications cause significant and sustained improvement in cognition. The best we can say is that these medicines keep the patient as they are, and delays deterioration, but even the most ardent user Since 1940 CALL FOR TAKE OUT! of these medicines, if they 315.673.7448 look at the literature, realValleyInnRt20.com ize they lose their efficacy within a year or year and a  2574 CHERRY VALLEY TPKE  half. difference...they also had side effects. My experience has shown me that in point of fact the benefits are quite minimal and the side effects are real, not dangerous but real. I have had many patients stop these pills and either did not deteriorate further or improved off the medicines, so my view of prescription treatment for dementia has been leavened by experience over time. There are also 2 medical foods/nutritional supplements to treat dementia as well and they include Axona and Cerefolin NAC. I like the idea that there would be some vitamin you could use that might actually have a clinical effect because I think there are less side effects with these prescriptions then there are with the other drugs mentioned previously. Unfortunately these nutritional supplements are not usually covered by insurance because they are considered vitamins but they are not available in GNC or Natur-Tyme as they require a prescription from the doctor. Once again although individual families will say this medicine helped or that medicine helped they have not been overwhelmingly successful. Worth a try: yes. Guaranteed to work: absolutely not. I have absolutely no confidence in any nonprescription supplements that are available in the nutrition stores and vitamin stores. Completely unproven and potentially dangerous! Show me a single study done in America using human beings that show some improvement in a double blinded study and I will happily change my tune. So unfortunately, our current armamentarium is quite limited when it comes to treating Alzheimer’s/memory loss and therefore we are left with trying to prevent it, which I think in the long run is much more important... There are obvious risk factors for dementia and they include smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and being inactive. There are genetic risk factors as well but there is nothing you can do about your genes so we focus on the modifiable factors. So yes, you can directly diminish your risk of dementia by not smoking, not drinking excessive alcohol, controlling your blood pressure and controlling your sugar. I prefer to focus on the

couch potato aspect because the studies show that this is one of the most important modifiable risk factors. Besides exercise helping your cholesterol, your blood pressure, your joints, your mood, your fall risk, etc. physical exercise cuts your risk of dementia. Mental exercises are also touted to prevent dementia but the evidence that supports that is very slim. Physically pumping more blood to the brain works...mentally challenging your brain hasn’t been shown to work. It just makes sense to me that if you can open up the arteries to your brain with exercise you can get a little better blood flow and therefore a little better function from the brain. Studies have not shown that mental exercises have a basic and lasting impact but studies have shown that physical exercise seems to be associated with a lower risk for dementia. The mature patients that I see on a regular basis would benefit from exercise for many reasons not just the dementia component. People may be afraid of a heart attack or stroke in some vague way but the fear of dementia seems to strike a stronger chord. They take it a little more personally because they know someone who’s had the problem. Still, knowing about it and actually doing something about it are two different things. Get up off the couch and take a walk regularly...walk over to the local Nursing Home and that will provide you much better motivation than I can with this article. If walking through the halls of the nursing home doesn’t motivate you to get moving while you still can nothing will! So memory loss can be a terrible problem with life changing consequences for the entire family...meds so far have little effect...but you are not helpless against this scourge... In fact you don’t need special tools, expensive tests, or exotic supplements to ward off memory loss. You just have to move it or lose it. Move your body to prevent losing your mind. So what or who are you waiting for? Until next month...get well...stay well. []

Syracuse Chiefs For over 12 years now, readers of “Table Hopping” have turned to this column to see what films are worth going to the theaters to see, and which ones are best left ignored. I will be getting back to business as usual in the next issue, but with summer coming to a close, I wanted to take a moment and reflect on a local organization that has provided my family and I with hours of entertainment over the past few months. Growing up in Central New York during the 80’s and 90’s, there was no bigger and better draw in town than the Syracuse Chiefs. Sure, you could go to the Camillus Mall and pump a fistful of quarters into the machines at Aladdin’s Castle, but there was nothing quite like the thrill of going to a ball game at MacArthur Stadium. My parents used to take me to the games at least an hour before the first pitch, because there was no doubt that I’d rack up a few more signatures on my well-worn mitt. I would clap along with Fogarty’s “Centerfield”, bust out the Pee-Wee Herman dance to “Tequila,” and I would shout “STUUUUUUUUUUUUU” at the top of my lungs with the rest of the crowd, as fan-favorite Stu Pederson came up to bat. I still think back lovingly

to the night that we spent a 2-hour rain delay under the old metal canopy, singing along with strangers and cheering as the groundsmen tried in vain to keep the field covered. Despite these glory days, admittedly, the experience of watching the Chiefs began to lose its luster. MacArthur Stadium was reduced to rubble in 1997, and it is fair to say that the club’s new home, P&C Stadium (in all of its artificially turfed glory) simply lacked the magic that seemed to flow so effortlessly through MacArthur. It didn’t help that the team had its share of losing seasons, but the spreading indifference went well beyond tallies in the wins and losses columns. Somehow, the entertainment value dissipated, and in a busy modern world, people, including myself, simply found other things to do. This terrible tide began to change, however, when Jason Smorol took over the team as General Manager in 2013. I vividly remember turning on the “Bud and the Manchild” radio show on 1260 AM, and hearing Mr. Smorol giving one of his first

interviews in Syracuse. The exuberance, passion, and optimism he projected was infectious. It was obvious that he grasped a novel concept that had been forgotten in this town long ago; Baseball is supposed to be fun. There is a reason that it has long been considered our National Pastime. There are very few things that can compare to going out to the ballpark as a family on a warm summer’s night, witnessing professional athletes performing at their highest levels, and taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the glorious game. continued on pg 42

Stay Fit This SUMMER!

Is More, Better In The Gym? If you work harder in the gym will you get quicker results? Will you look better even if you don’t change your eating habits? Is working out for three hours better than just one? I had a conversation with a member a few weeks ago that I found to be pretty interesting. We were talking about the ongoing Jacob’s Ladder challenge (how many feet you can climb in fifteen minutes). He told me that he was currently number three up on the board, but wanted to see if he could get up there next to the number one contender. He went on to tell me that he pushed himself hard every time he was at the gym, but still wasn’t happy with how his physique looked. He said his eating habits weren’t as good as they could be and he still wanted to lose a few pounds. I asked him this question. “If you HAD to choose, would you rather be the amazing guy in the gym that everybody looks at and says, he’s a freaking animal; just watching him work out makes me tired, or the guy who has the perfect physique?” He paused, seemed a little stumped by my question and then said, “I would want to look the way I want to Champion’s member, Rob. look.” I asked “Would you still work out as hard if you looked the way you wanted to?” He said, “No.” Many of us want it all, don’t we? We want good health, great workouts, and a show stopping physique. Is it possible to have all of these things without killing ourselves every time we’re at the gym? The Ritual Most of the people I see at the gym are there to complete a ritual instead of a workout. By ritual I mean the act of showing up at the gym and doing the workout plan for that particular day. They go through the same old workouts like spaced out zombies dragging themselves from machine to machine, grunting and groaning, trying to tap into energy that just isn’t there. It’s Time To Change Spending hours going through the motions of simply being at the gym without truly putting in the effort just doesn’t make any sense to me, especially when you’re not making any progress. To many, ignorance is bliss. continued on pg 40

When it comes to discussing movies in the summer months, oftentimes, conversations and debates center around which summer blockbuster is the best (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, in case you were wondering.) These productions are fueled by bloated budgets and endless effects, and require a team of thousands to bring the final cut to the big screen. On June 9, however, there is a film being released on iTunes and X-Box Streaming that stands as the polar opposite of these blockbusters. PEARL is a revenge flick that proves that a great film is the result of excellent storytelling and dedication, regardless of the funds at the filmmakers disposal. The project was a labor of love for director/co-writer/co-producer Guy Patton and his writer/co-producer/star wife, Dana. With a modest a modest budget of $15,000, they put together a film that flips the script on the traditional revenge saga by featuring a female protagonist who is hellbent on destruction. Ms. Patton plays Pearl, a woman driven by seething rage and who scoffs at sanctity of human life. In many films such as these, the audience is shown (or at the very least, made aware of) the events that lead to the character’s psychosis. This is another aspect that separates PEARL from its counterparts. Our first introduction to the protagonist is a violent one. With

nuggets about Pearl’s past are dropped throughout, mostly through a series of disturbing flashbacks that seem to have sprung from the damaged mind of the dangerous woman. Ms. Patton, who bulked up considerably to the fill the shoes of the homicidal Pearl, brings a fearless determination to the title character. Wielding guns, knives, broken-bottles, and her fists with deadly precision, she is a tortured soul who is driven by an invisible force that remains just beyond the viewers’ reach. It wasn’t until long after the movie was over that I realized for the first time that there really wasn’t any particular reason I should have wanted her to succeed. Outwardly, there were virtually no redeeming qualities about her. She killed almost everyone who had the grave misfortune of crossing her path, and those she did not destroy, including childhood friend Daniel (Jeff Kim), she kept at a distance. In Patton’s capable hands, however, Pearl was somehow sympathetic. Her calculated actions, though brutal, always seemed to have a purpose; one that would eventually be revealed and (hopefully) understood. There was something refreshing about PEARL that went well beyond the storytelling and performances. The film meant somevery little knowledge as to her motives, we watch as Pearl busts into a bar that is thing to every single person involved with the production, and this was apparent inhabited by a couple of nefarious patrons, seeks the origins of a white teddy bear, from the first frame to the last. Filmed in the Pattons’ hometown of Jersey City, NJ, and coldly executes everyone in the room. As it was in the opening the scene, the mystery surrounding Pearl and her motives there was an authentic genuineness fueling the film that would have been impossible to replicate within the confines of a studio. Mr. Patton utilized these settings is kept close to the cuff throughout the majority of the film. She is driven by an intense desire to track down and destroy the man behind the production of the teddy with excellent precision, framing each shot expertly and deftly capturing the seediness of drug dens and motels. These factors effectively captured the gritty essence bears (which just so happen to be filled with methamphetamine) and will stop at of the story, and allowed PEARL to translate from page to screen with power and nothing in order to do so. With the reluctant help of meth-cook Erik (Scott Michael precision. Morales) she learns that the manufacturer is a man named Tre (Justin Brown) and continued on pg 41 thus begins her murderous venture to find him. Throughout her search, little

My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

Talking It All Through According to a recent NY Times Op-ed piece about New York State’s new “yes means yes” affirmative sexual consent law for SUNY campuses, 40% of sexual assault victims are victimized before they turn 18. I learned in an Abnormal Psychology course that a high percentage of sexual abusers are moralistic, rigid, authoritarian individuals who take advantage of age and power differentials to get their needs met. Accused Quaalude dispenser Bill Cosby and pedophile clergy come to mind here. Today we have a lot of good information about the neurochemical processes driving what Freud called the id and religious authorities call sinful lust. Accepting and understanding our chemical nature assists us in taking care of ourselves. In terms of brain function, the amygdala and limbic system register environmental cues prompting us for response. Our higher functioning cerebral cortex assesses the situation and formulates a plan. Sexual urges are primal amygdala stuff. Communicating about satisfying sexual urges involves higher brain function. Higher brain function can be a very good thing. Consensual sexual activity always starts with communication of some sort. Amid acquaintances and strangers at a college mixer, ideal communication about physical boundaries requires realistic awareness that one person might be agreeing to relinquish future peace of mind to gain approval from another person who might feel disinterested in that first person’s future well-being. The party with the disadvantage is generally the woman. On and off campus, society still highly values agreeable and nurturing women while valuing strength and personal power in men. That provides gender based set-up for both verbal and non-verbal miscommunication when it comes to the possibility of sex. Because “yes means yes” requirements serve to empower women, there is fear the law will target men. The law requires concrete and specific communication in a traditionally fraught and primal dance where mixed signals abound. Of course, the law will not deter calculating and deliberate sexual predators who automatically elicit some form of “yes” through physical force. Such predators often require victims to praise that predator’s sexual skill during the assaults. In such cases, yes is not yes. Nonetheless, there is always some preliminary communication prior to any consensual sexual hook-up ranging from, “would you like to come up to my room and

hang out” to “would you like to ____?” Fill in the blank. The softer the opening line, the more mixed the signals. Traditionally, once the “hanging out” commences, another deal might be revealed. At this point, specific discussions about specific body parts might eliminate the he said/she said Q and A testimonies that follow sexual assault accusations. If a female student invited to a male student’s room to watch TV has not preemptively stated she is celibate, then at that point the male might want to suggest any previously undiscussed sexual intentions he may harbor. Checklists when used properly prevent mechanical errors in automotive garages and medical errors in hospitals. A mutually agreed upon checklist before employing one’s body, mind and psyche in potentially life altering behaviors might not be a silly idea. Here is a sexual consent checklist question I suggest, “How do you feel continued on pg 36

Beauty & Fashion by ERIN REIMEL

Back-to-School Basics We each have our own method of preparing for a new school year. When I was in middle school, it was buying all new school supplies. To be honest, this is still one of my favorite back-to-school activities. New folders and notebooks are some of the most exciting parts about starting anew. When it comes to fashion and beauty though, you also need a few new things to kick your year off right. Now these things don’t necessarily include a new wardrobe filled with the trendiest pieces for fall, but rather a few basic must-haves to get you through the year feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to take on the world. White T-Shirt: Who doesn’t love a white t-shirt? It goes with everything from your basic jeans and sneakers to your favorite skirt and blazer. You cannot go wrong if you have the perfect white t-shirt in your closet. Personally I like something loose and gauzy, but not too see-through that I can pair with leggings or tuck into a midi skirt depending on how I’m feeling. Every year I tend to look for a new one since white can tend to go through a lot of wear and tear – not to mention staining – throughout the year. Favorite Pair of Jeans: Jeans are always a trusty item to have in your closet. There is a style for every occasion, a color to match every outfit, and fit for everyone. My most recent favorite pair are faded black, high-waisted skinny jeans with tears at the knees. I’m constantly switching from skinny jeans to boyfriend jeans to boot cut – I have so many pairs. But once you find your perfect fit, that’s all you really need for any look. I suggest taking a day to find what works best for you. Shopping for jeans can take a while, so mentally prepare yourself and just jump right in! Try a bunch of different options and choose what makes you feel beautiful and ready to start the year. Red Lipstick: Red lips are always a classic, but finding your perfect shade can be difficult.

Your assignment before school starts is to find what suits you best. Are you as pale as a ghost? A red with a blue undertone might be what you’re looking for. Are you a bronzed goddess? Something with more of an orange tone might be better for you. When you’re running late for class or going out with friends, a red lip is certain to make you look glam and gorgeous without too much effort. The Perfect Bag: Trends come and go in fashion all the time, but a good bag is something you don’t have to replace often. For school you want something big enough to carry your books or laptop, and that means it has to be sturdy too. Out of all the things in my closet, a good bag is what I invest the most in. It want something that is going to last me at least a few years, if not more. A good leather bag that can be swung over your shoulder or carried by a handle is perfect and will save your life – because your whole life can be held inside! As the summer winds down and you prepare for the year to come, enjoy the long days out in the sun. But for when the days are much too hot, hours in the AC shopping for a few new basics can hit the spot! []

Each attending child was given a backpack full of school supsome plies. That very day 850 backpacks were given away. At first I thought this to be advice on representative of how willing the Community is to participate in ending this drug/ child care. violence difficulty. Then, as I continued my research I learned that since 2002 sucSeveral cess has been phenomenal. In 2007, attendance at Mary’s barbeque had reached children 7000. In 2013, 21,000 attended and 19,000 backpacks were given to children. There were are 20,830 students in the entire City School District. This is remarkable. In 2002 playing or this woman with such beautiful inspiring spirit and ability said “This is going to be working the start of something”. And it was: Just the tip of an iceberg of compassion and on computers. The Center has become a place that the neighborhood counts on. It achievement making this city a much richer and better place. is where you go for help, recreation and love and compassion. The Center works with Most critically, Mary’s work and ideas are achieved during that critical growth the judicial system and has provided court ordered Community Service options for period when young minds are like sponges. This is when we learn love, religion and over 300 individuals. The Center is also a safe haven for the Community. It is a place values that last a lifetime. By addressing children during this crucial growth period where parents go for supervised visits with their children. The Center offers a place they can be shown that street values are wrong. (Parents need to understand this and a manner attractive to kids. They like to go to the center. Kids can use and learn important window of growth - This makes parents think and act. “just one important computers, play games, watch movies, get something to eat, and read books after needed program”) Mary wanted to provide a place to go where wholesome values school. Services at the center range from array of recreational programs to tutoring can be introduced in every young life, wherever they are lacking. Mary strongly for students of all ages to assisting with applying for government services like food believes no child should languish, with no place to go. She placed her thoughts into stamps or distributing donations from its food pantry. “Deed” and this wonderful place was born: In 2011, State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) named Mary Nelson, of Syracuse, In 2009, Mary opened a Youth Center on Syracuse’s South Side to provide kids as the 49th Senate District’s “Woman of Distinction” as part of the New York State Senand families a positive environment where hope, fun, training, and real care can be ate’s 14th Annual 2011 Women of Distinction celebration. “Mary Nelson’s commitfound. This has turned in to a phenomenal comprehensive example of what works ment to her community, especially for children in need, is truly remarkable,” Senator in a Community. her as a Woman of Distinction.” In Mary’s response she said: “When I opened The Mary Nelson Youth Center, my focus was, and continues to be service to the youth of my Syracuse community. When someone like Senator David Valesky takes notice, and recognizes that work, it empowers me, and fuels my determination.” In September of 2014 Mary had a big surprise. Oprah Winfrey came to visit the Center. Oprah was in town as a featured guest for the dedication of Newhouse 2 at Syracuse University. Oprah took stark note of how different life could be if Mary’s kids had a chance to go to Newhouse. Oprah looked over Mary’s creation and said I am going to give you $100,000 dollars. She went on saying: “I’m going to write the check right now,” she said. “Mary Nelson is a Community Warrior”, who is fighting for the community, who is doing the best she can with the means she’s been given. People like this are the real heroes, not just of our community, but of our country.” By following Mary’s example and addressing children in their formative years the future can be changed. The streets can become a safe place for Community and wholesome fun. Children must be exposed to ample ideals that promote wholesome thinking and wholesome streets or these things simply cannot happen. Schools, Boys and Girls clubs, Scouts or wherever children gather are places where law and good sense should meet. Vital accompanying programs need to be developed, introduced, and monitored with ongoing result oriented adapting. Mary Nelson is a champion for humanity. She is precisely what we need in City Hall. As a Councilor for her District where her Center is located Mary will serve her city with deep understanding, wisdom, and the ability to form “Deed” from words. In recent years, City leaders have not amply attended our Communities in any meaningful way. As our seasoned Chief of Police somberly shakes his head and calls the July 4 weekend the worst outbreak of violence in his 26 years on the force…We need to take note. Who is minding the store? Where is the spirit and innovation and brainstorming necessary to stop this? Much of the thinking that you will only hear about in Table Hopping is that it is costly to invest in poor Communities as the reward will be in budgets long after most current leaders are gone. With this attitude prevailing, programs are not even designed. There is no spirit or innovation. In today’s America City Hall must not be an Ivory Tower led by rhetoric for the poor. The stunning increased violence and the decline of quality of life in the Communities are proof that nothing of substance has resulted from all past rhetoric and nothing is in play for the poor. If we do not act “meaningful” the future will never come. We have a great opportunity in Mary Nelson. She will be a shining example and reminder of compassion and “Deed” and “Results” for kids and our city and hope for a real future. In one conversation Oprah was very taken by Mary’s amazing efforts to help children and she declared: “Mary Nelson is a Warrior for Children”. Where the future and all of its answers lie. That is very big. Please be sure to vote in the Primary Thursday, September 9th for Mary Nelson. And again on Tuesday November 3. []

about conceiving a child with me in the event the contraception you are providing does not work?” Both parties ask and answer the question. Such reciprocal communications, however businesslike, clear the air and in actually exercise the still maturing pre-frontal cortex, which involves the executive function of the brain. Respectful honest communication creates a safer world because when rapes occur, people take sides. Non-consensual sex harms victims, their families and future prospects for healthy relationships. Of course, not all sex involves reproductive function, but as Seventeen Magazine used to caution, heavy petting can lead to sexual intercourse, which is a reproductive function. Unplanned reproduction adversely affects girls and women more than males. I may seem to digress here, so please be tolerant: between 1950 and 1975, 2.4 -4 million unmarried mothers “surrendered” their children to official and unofficial placements. Surrender is an apt term. Many of these mothers found themselves physically restrained before and during labor, anesthetized while personnel removed their children from them, and then returned home amid secrecy, grief and stigma. In “A Hole in My Heart: A Memoir and Report from the Fault Lines of Adoption,” journalist Lorraine Dusky writes about the lifelong confusion, anger, and grief described by many mothers and children separated at birth during a time when there were many things people didn’t talk about. We need people who are willing to talk openly about many things. Those unable or unwilling to communicate their intentions regarding sex just might not be ready to have sex. That talk should help them decide. []

running as an example), sprinting on a treadmill is obviously far more intense than jogging. Doing as much as possible, as close to the maximum exertion you can put out, is intense. Why does intensity matter? Intensity matters because oxygen consumption correlates directly to calories burned. When exercise is introduced into the mix, we consume more oxygen and therefore burn more calories. Are you more out of breath after walking or sprinting? After lifting a five pound weight or lifting a twenty five pound weight. The harder you push yourself, the more oxygen you require and the more calories you will burn. The Bottom Line It’s the “more is better” mentality that has been branded in the back of all our minds as a result of decades of misinformation being fed to us by various publications. More isn’t necessarily better and it won’t always get you quicker results! There isn’t just one right way or one path that will lead you to your goals. If you’re not getting results, you need to take a step back, take a look at what you’ve been doing and try a different approach. When you feel like throwing in the towel, think about the opportunity cost of not working out and how it can affect your health, self- image and self-esteem. The consequences of skipping a workout are much greater than the effort that it takes to hit the gym and turn your life around. So suck it up, get to the gym and get moving!

PEARL

RUN TIME: 80 mins. GENRE: Action, Crime, Thriller STARRING: Dana Patton,

Fans of the revenge genre will be satisfied to see Scott Michael Morales, George Morafetis, Justin Brown that the violence is delightfully over-the-top and DIRECTOR: Guy Patton messy. From slashing throats to brutal bludgeonWriters: Guy Patton, Dana ings, Pearl is an equal opportunist when it comes Patton to weaponry. Mr. Patton, who is a comedy writer by trade, successfully interjects brief moments of GRADE: Amuch-needed humor into the intense tale. Some of these instances are subtle and meta, hilariously catering to movie nerds such as myself. Others are more obvious, and largely provided by Morales, whose chemistry with Ms. Patton was essential for their unconventional dynamic to work. Two weeks prior to the release of PEARL, The Wachowski’s disastrous sci-fi fiasco JUPITER ASCENDING was released on Blu-Ray. I watched these two polar opposite films in succession, and for me, they will forever be ingrained with one another. JUPITER, with its $176 million budget, was a prime example of everything that is wrong in modern movie-making. Sure, the visuals were incredible, but it was a colossal failure on every other level. Conversely, PEARL was a film that was crafted by a cast and crew who longed to tell an entertaining story with the meager provisions provided. Seemingly, their entire budget would have merely been spent on a throw-away background prop in an inflated flop like JUPITER ASCENDING. Despite their financial constraints, however, they created an entertaining film that may not have the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, but does have the heart and soul needed to be a must-see movie. PEARL: APEARL is available through iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Target (online), Walmart (online), X-Box Streaming, and most streaming services. It is also available for rent at Family Video. []
