Raise a Cup of Good Cheer! There’s a reason that every season brewers crank out limited supplies of specialty beer —from autumn’s Oktoberfests and pumpkin beers to winter’s spicier, heavier ales. The varieties of holiday chocolate or vanilla stouts, winter warmers or strong Belgian ales give you all the makings of a wonderful winter of beer. December 21st marks the official beginning of winter, but as we all know here Central New York, it arrives much earlier. In any case, the month of December is packed with many a celebration, be it Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s Eve, or even Festivus for the rest of us. With so many local and craft brews to choose from, how it all started might help you decide. Beer is one of the oldest drinks in the world, approximately 6,000 years old and said to have its beginnings in Mesopotamia, where women were primarily brewing this ancient libation. Gambrinus was reputed to have introduced the toast (of the clinking glasses variety, not the bread) and invented hopped malt beer. Not a true patron saint, Gambrinus is regarded as one by many a brewer and beer lover. It wasn’t until the rise of Christianity in Europe where the production of beer picked up. The Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse Strikes a Chord with It’s Kids Happy Holidays, everyone. I hope your sense of love, peace and harmony grows along with the season; and that you have a great forthcoming year full of good things, wonderful experiences and —of course— great music! This month, we’re going straight for the jugular of benevolence. People do good things with music. Usually, we cast glory upon the body of hardworking musicians hailing and wailing from the Central New York area. It’s a lot of fun and a privilege to write about this scene, not to mention a great way for guys like me to dig into a teeming music scene. A scene that is ripe and seasoned with an impressive dose of raw-freakin-talent, chops, and generally chummy commeraderie among the players and music lovers. And the promoters are doing their thing, too, bringing a variety of specialty and themed shows at the rate fo several per month.

Take my good friend Dave Marble, for instance. A trusted friend. He’s the CFO for the Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse. He’s also a huge local music fan. Name a show you’ve been too, and “yeah,” he was there. As pals who routinely talk, well … we were talking. He was telling me about a program that involved music as the vehicle in helping and developing and teaching the youth in Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse organization. Schmaltz Brewing Company (located in Clifton Park, NY) is a craft brewery established in California that started out as a Chanukah ‘experiment’ in 1996 is has gained notoriety by winning awards and rated as a top-100 brewery by beer magazines and websites. They give their beers witty names like “Messiah Bold,” “Genesis Ale,” “Jewbelation” to name a few. Their beers are kosher and include ingredients such as figs, dates, and pomegranate —fruits drenched in Jewish symbolism. The seasonal beers change based on the barley and hop harvests in the fall, and Rosh Hashanah, the new year of Jewish tradition. As we look at the history of beer and its connections to faith, you don’t have to ascribe to any religion to enjoy a delicious glass of a Belgian dubbel, tripel or an imperial amber ale made with pomegranate juice. You don’t have to believe in anything except the wonderful concoction right in front of your very eyes. If you aren’t sure which kind to choose, go to one of the many local beer stores and you’ll be guided to the right taste for you. Alas, another year draws to an end. The month of December tends to be one not only of celebration and tradition, but one of reflection of this ending year. So in the historic tradition from the King of Beer himself, Gambrinus, let’s raise a glass of beer and toast to health, wealth, and hoppiness! Cheers!

teaching cultural drumming in multiple international styles. The sounds can be heard echoing through the hallways in a fun-loving rhythmic tune that really sets a joyous baseline for the entire program. CS: This is outstanding to see an organization such as yours embracing music as a vehicle to do good things. How did the motivation to utilize music come about? DM: The 21st Century Community Learning Center has gifted a grant that has been so generous to our program! We have an additional two hours after the school day to offer the students something that is not only educationally enriching, but something that they enjoy. Each student is given the opportunity to choose their enrichment, and unlike some other schools in the area, we have the funding to make their dreams a reality. Each student has the opportunity to play his or her own guitar for an entire lesson. It’s the same with the drums, keyboards, and recording equipment. These are not children that would be able to afford a personalized trip to a recording studio, but through the Boys & Girls Clubs and 21st CCLC, they can visit one every day at their school to make meaningful connections with their passions. We offer music because that’s what the students are excited about. We take our end of year evaluations very seriously and take the student feedback to heart when planning our programming for the next year. Because of this, many students have now had years of experience playing an instrument or studying a field that they enjoy. We feel that music is particularly important as it allows an avenue for personal expression and it can be a way to teach mathematics and science in non-traditional ways. It’s also very therapeutic for them to be involved in these sorts of activities after a very long traditional school day. Every single student we have in our after school program has elected to be there on his or her own accord. They want to be in school for 2 extra hours to experience what we are offering them. It is so important that they are gaining lifelong skills and building positive relationships instead of leaving school behind to engage in activities that would not be as positive or beneficial to their personal growth. Music appeals to many of them, and it’s what keeps them engaged. CS: Very exciting news, indeed. What’s next? DM: Each year being involved in the program has made me even more excited about the upcoming year. We strive for better each year. We take surveys and feedback from our students to heart. I look forward to hearing their thoughts on what they want to see and try to truly make it their program. We are always looking for volunteers and are open to ideas and insight from community members or businesses from those who would appeal to our student body and programs. Our programs offer invaluable experiences across the board. CS:What would be an example of one of the postive outcomes? DM: Our youth are learning how to be active members of their community by interacting daily with people who are enthusiastic about sharing their skills with them. Our most important goal is imbedded in our value statement that: Great Futures Start Here at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse. CS: Well, I’m very happy and inspired that we have folks like you at the Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse. If everybody had a gig like that, wars could stop. Thanks for doing the article, Dave. When News is Fake Fake news? Yep, “fake” news is the Topic Du Jour on the Internet (excepting, of course, the election results). Why does “fake” news come as a surprise to anyone? Not too long ago, I wrote an article warning you of just such dangers when “researching” online: take the time required to figure out who is running a given website or “news”site, what, if any, political affiliations does this site or organization have, and above all, read broadly so that something taken out of context and feverishly reported over here might be returned to its proper frame of reference over there. There was a great deal of chatter online during the lead-up to the election that search results might be biased, filtering out bad news, and not returning legitimate results when it didn’t play the way the main purveyor (Google) wanted it to. This went doubly so for what was being fed into your “newstream” by Facebook. But the conversation about what is “fake” and what is not is somewhat confusing. In a nutshell: • • If you weren’t already aware of it, most “news” has become a form of entertainment. I remember my dad listening to a man on the radio he really dis-

almost impossible to listen to them without grinding your teeth and wishing for Old Walter Cronkite back again— the online versions are not as readily identifiable. • Some of them advertise themselves with self-aware names and don’t even try to disguise what type of news they’re trying to share: “Right Wing Propaganda.com” or “LeftistsRUs.com” (I’m making those names up, I hope!); others are less obvious and present themselves as middle of the road or “honest.” • The question of “Who will watch the watchers” has become the Question Du Jour. The idea of Who Will Watch the Watchers is just what it says: if our Fourth Estate can’t be trusted, how about the Fifth (the “outlier” observers, like bloggers, podcasters, and the like)? And what about the Gatekeepers who let us know of the existence of these sources? Once upon a time, TV and Radio were offered to us simply by advertisers. News was supposed to be exempt from the scrutiny of advertisers, who could control the nature of the entertainment, and try to match it (comedy, drama, science fiction, variety show). As such, we had a certain amount of trust in it. Newspapers “advertised” their political persuasions and were understood as such. With cable came so many more avenues of information —and with both cable and the Internet siphoning off listeners, radio became desperate for listeners. Someone realized that offering people something blatantly obvious, but also not available elsewhere might be a draw: Talk Radio boomed. And of course it was mostly Right Wing. The left tried to emulate it, but without success because the common understanding was that “mainstream,” i.e. regularly programmed “news” tended left. So the uniqueness factor wasn’t salable. The Internet eventually moved into the mix of offerings for news and information, and now Confirmation Bias became a problem to contend with: was what we learned satisfactory because it seemed like a “real” story, or did we like

In any case, as more and more “news” sites proliferated, searching for accuracy and honesty was like hunting for the proverbial needle in the haystack. And even if you found what you were pretty sure was a needle, how do you know who put it there and why? I’ve often cautioned readers of this column to search out the owners of a given site, understand what they are hoping to achieve, and understand the information accordingly. The recent uproar with news, fake news, and search results rested with the Gatekeepers: the Gift Certificates Available Googles and more particularly, with Facebook. Also along for the ride is scientist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) who is brought along to work with Banks in order to get a clearer picture of what exactly the beings are, and what they want. Regardless of the actual plot, when you see a trailer for a film that centers around a potential alien invasion, one can’t help but think of the countless action films that have been released over the years. Many of these follow the same course and plotlines, and ultimately do little to invigorate the genre. This is where ARRIVAL shines. For the first time that I can remember, the initial invasion isn’t immediately followed by the destruction of many of the world’s greatest monuments. This is a film with a story to tell, and the tale itself is more important than the spectacular special effects. That’s not to say, however, that there aren’t dazzling visuals to be seen throughout. The vessels are haunting in their singular plainness, and the creatures themselves are mesmerizing. Their form of communication is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and Louise’s attempts to decipher the complex puzzle is as spellbinding as any of the vicious attacks generally seen in alien actioners. There is a wide range of reasons why ARRIVAL shines so spectacularly bright. First, there is the Denis Villeneuve (SICARIO, PRISONERS) impeccable direction. While this is a film that is largely dialogue driven, it is a production whose visuals are frightening, hypnotic, and strangely beautiful. There is always an undercurrent of potential danger residing just below the surface of every scene, and the viewer is left to wonder if global annihilation is the ultimate end-game. This is also a credit to screenwriter Eric Heisserer, who adapted the story from “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang. I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised to see Heisserer’s screenplay receive a handful of nominations during the upcoming award season, including an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The dialogue is smooth, smart, and honest, and was far more imperative to the success of the film than in most titles in the alien-

Her ever-growing list of incredible turns (JUNEBUG, ENCHANTED, THE FIGHTER, THE MUPPETS, HER, AMERICAN HUSTLE) becomes more impressive with each passing year, and she once again shows why she is one of the most reliable and talented performer’s working in movies today. Her ability to inhabit each character she plays, and make them wholly different than the one that proceeded it, is an intangible trait that can only be executed by someone at the top of their craft. Her turn as Louise is no different, and allows the character to become as real as any I’ve seen this year. Humbled by the unfathomably difficult task at hand, she is also resolute in her determination to bridge that divides the creatures from humanity. It’s been well over a week since I initially saw ARRIVAL, and I don’t believe that there has been a day that has gone by where I haven’t thought of the film. A flawless mix of expert direction, screenwriting, and acting, it easily emerges as one of the best films of 2016. There is as yet no holding back the hands of time so might as well get ready for it. Not too ready … I still shudder at all the Xmas decorations even before Thanksgiving but that’s just the traditionalist in me. There’s a lot of health issues around the holidays and we might as well deal with the most common and get our Xmas cards on the table … so to speak. This can be a rough time of year

reel it in after that first piece of pumpkin pie? You can at least go for a walk before or after dinner … it won’t give you any real weight loss but at least when you are walking you are probably not eating. I know there are those proud few of you that can eat and exercise at the same time but you are not reading any articles about health or medicine so I can safely exclude you from the conversation. I love how people act like the holidays sneak up on them every year … I had no idea we would be sitting down to a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings? Who knew there would be treats on the table for the holidays? Who could have guessed? You could actually plan for these occasions … intentionally bringing a healthy choice to the communal dinner, you could get some extra walks in and or trim down your usual portions for the week or two before the get together to keep the weight gain down. I am not saying you should not enjoy the holiday … life is way too short and I have no objection to the eat dessert first crowd. I am saying throw some cranberry on that plate … even the kind that still has the ring imprints from the can it came from. (That’s my personal favorite). Take a couple spoonfuls of that green bean casserole … it’s good and it’s good for you. Well, as I write this I realize when you read this you will already have debauched yourself at Thanksgiving but you can still get yourself together for the rest of the year end festivities. This is also a tough time of year physically because people “turtle up” for the winter. They have no problem being outdoors and active during the three months of the summer but wintertime comes and they go into exercise hibernation waiting out the long cold months for the sun and warm weather to return. That’s too much down time for a person of your age. You have to keep moving it in the winter. You don’t have to go to the gym but you should move around more than you are. Don’t kid yourself … if going down the stairs with the laundry is really exercise for you … you are not the fittest amongst us. Of course I’m a big fan of walking but I understand the

Pre-Existing Conditions “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men,” reads Luke 2:14 of the King James version of the Bible. This joyous call, worded differently in The Jerusalem Bible, is attributed to hosts of angels rejoicing after Jesus’s birth. Earlier in his gospel, Luke, said to be a physician, writes that it was in the sixth month that Mary learned from the angel Gabriel that she was to conceive a son of the Lord and this son’s name was to be Jesus. Because she was a virgin, Mary doubted this, but the angel said the Lord would cover Mary with his shadow. Gabriel further announced that Mary’s elderly, barren cousin Elizabeth was six months pregnant with a son, proving, Gabriel assured Mary, that “nothing is impossible to God.” Luke writes that around the time Mary was to give birth, Caesar Augustus had ordered a census of the whole world. This census required Joseph to travel to Bethlehem so he and his betrothed, Mary, could register together. Finding no room at the inn, Joseph and Mary found shelter in a stable where Mary gave birth to her son Jesus. The whole world of Caesar Augustus, Joseph, Mary and Mary’s son Jesus would soon face revolutionary times. This world obviously was not the whole world and far east of Bethlehem, a millennia old spiritual tradition held a tenet that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Jesus went on to teach. Elsewhere in Caesar Augustus’s world, another teacher was winding down his public life while Jesus was growing into his. Hillel the Elder taught the ethic of reciprocity, aka, the Golden Rule: That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. Hillel also taught selfrespect and duty, and I’m paraphrasing here: if I am not for myself who will be for me, and if I’m only for myself, what am I? As for duty, Hillel asked, if not now, when? Around that time, I learned in my University College Mythology class that the ancient Greek Titaness Mnemosyne, daughter of Uranus and Gaia and from whose name the term mnemonic derives, was the first to manifest memory. The ancient Greeks and Romans, northern Europeans, Indians from India and indigenous North Americans acknowledged female and male powers and the power of nature itself. Abolitionist, humanist and suffragette Matilda Joslyn Gage, born in 1826 in Cicero NY, criticized Christianity as serving to keep women powerless, uneducated and submissive. American women achieved suffrage in 1920. Matilda probably celebrated Christmas, but I can’t say for sure. Merry Christmas. Happy Hanukkah. Happy Holidays. Of course I would be remiss if I didn’t recommend the great local charity Hope for Bereaved because this is completely their bailiwick. Now on the issue of gift giving … Last year I gave someone who I thought I knew a gift of Bacon of the Month … and I mean this was high end, thick cut, special rubs and salts specialty bacon not a package from the Gas and Go … in return I got a disco ball from Spencer’s gifts with the promise that if I gave more bacon further disturbing gifts would follow. Needless to say all subsequent bacon was diverted … to my house … I still don’t know what to make of this incident because I thought a love of bacon was shared by all guys my age. My point being you can torture yourself trying to think of gifts and be oh so wrong so why not try something new? Is it too trite to suggest you give the gift of time together? Instead of that sweater you know they will exchange … why not movie tickets to a show you can all go to together. Why not a dinner gift certificate that includes you? Tickets to a baseball game are dirt cheap so you can’t throw down the $$$ excuse. Speaking of getting together as a gift, which it surely is, this is the perfect time of year for that because there are Christmas shows aplenty. To bring just two to your attention why not check out The Desantis Xmas show at the Palace Theatre Sunday Dec 11th … This is a great venue for great Xmas music provided by local talents both new and legendary fronted by Maria Desantis. Books End Bookshop “What a great name for a book store.” That was my thought the first time I visited this Eastwood icon. Because while it’s a fun play on “book ends,” it’s also an obvious thought provoker: does a good book ever “end?” Sure, some books do get worn out, spinecracked, dog-eared, and even moth-eaten. But a good book, once read, lives on forever, in your memory. And an even better book is a treasure you discover while combing through stacks of used books. Books End owner, Jim Roberts came upon his life’s work by happenstance. Almost like – a book! Roughly 30 years ago, his wife made a career move that brought the couple to Syracuse. While strolling James Street in Eastwood, they passed by a used book store with the proverbial “Help Wanted” sign in the window. Jim decided to apply. A month later, he was hooked. So when the store’s owner, about a year later (1987), suddenly got word that the child she was seeking to adopt was ready, she sold the business to Jim, and it’s been his ever since. (That part reminds me of Dickens…) The business model is deceptively simple: buy and sell used books. He also offers postcards, some sheet music, the occasional DVD or bookon-tape. But for the most part it’s 2 parts once-read, deeply discounted

paperbacks and hardcovers, one and a half parts hardcover collectibles or out of print books, and one-half part rare, even antique books meant only for connoisseurs of fine and precious treasures. His oldest book? He’s had one from the 1500s. Most unusual or rare? Probably a Mark Twain first edition of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” (Which I read.) What made this book special, Roberts explains, is that some editions had the frog in the illustration jumping in a way different from the majority of the prints. Finding one of those – and recognizing it when you see it – is the art of the

book dealer. In fact, Roberts explains that the only way he can describe his craft is that it’s one of those “you’ll know it when you see it” arts. You learn from experience, pouring over catalogues, going to estate sales, reading (!) about writers, book runs, rare prints and unusual items. Of course, given our area, he’s not likely to turn up an undiscovered Shakespeare folio, or a first edition of Bronte. He has handled a first edition of Butler’s “Book of the Saints,” and another book with Theodore Roosevelt’s signature inscribed in it. But just because a book is old, he explains, it doesn’t necessarily have any value – unless, like me, you simply love to hold an old book, enjoy the scent of the paper and ink, examine the antique typefaces, and ponder who might have held it before. There were many books printed over the years, he tells me, that had meaning in their day – a collection of sermons by a then-popular minister, for example – that have ceased to mean anything to the modern reader. His job, his vocation, is to know the difference, and to be able to place the right value on both the purchase and resale of any book. I asked many other questions about how books were valued: was a complete collection more valuable than a few books in a series? (Not necessarily.) Did an inscription harm or increase the value of a book? (That depends on both the inscription and the buyer.) In other words, if you have books to sell, or would like to obtain something special for your collection: stop in the store. Treleaven Kicks Off a Stellar Winter Weekend Schedule Contrary to popular belief, the fun doesn’t stop when the temperature drops along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. One particular member winery continues to offer exciting experiences throughout the winter months. Treleaven, located along the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in King Ferry, has a full schedule of fun to-do’s for the weekends to come. “Once harvest season wraps up at the wineries, things normally slow down and people hunker down for the winter. We wanted to give both the locals and those visitors braving the Finger Lakes winter weather something fun and unique to do. There is something for everyone — from wine lovers to beer lovers, movie goers or football fans— there will always be something happening at Treleaven that will help fight cabin fever during the chilly months” says Michelle Kokot, Marketing Manager of Treleaven Wines. Back by popular demand are Wine & Movie Nights. Spend chilly winter evenings in a cozy barrel-room-turned-movie-theatre. Round up your friends and family, bring a blanket and sip on delicious wine or beer while enjoying the evening’s feature film. The Treleaven staff promises you no previews and all the wine you can drink! The remainder of the season will feature three Friday flicks, and six Saturday films. The schedule began on Friday, November 18, and continues every Saturday through December 17. After a two-week hiatus to celebrate the holidays, the event will resume on Friday, January 6. There will be five showings in the New Year, including three Friday evenings. General admission is $7.50, with Buy children 12 and under admitted At for $5. Everything you could want while watching the day’s games will be a short 25-minute drive from both Ithaca and Auburn. The Treleaven barrel room will be equipped with four 55” high-definition televisions, as well as a large 16x9 foot projector screen with surround sound that will display the most anticipated regular season game at 1pm and 4pm. There will be multiple seating options available including comfortable couches and high-top tables. “At the beginning of September we began to see more football jerseys come through the Tasting Room,” said Lev Saltonstall, vice president of Treleaven. “In this area there are not many options for sports fans if they want to go out to watch the game, so we thought our barrel room would be a fun setting for people to hang out with friends and cheer on their favorite team.” The weekly event will run every Sunday, November 20 through December 18, before taking a two-week hiatus to celebrate the holidays. Come post-season play in the New Year, the winery will be show three full weekends of playoff action. The football-filled days will feature DJs keeping the atmosphere fun as they play music during the commercial breaks. Local favorite 1010BBQ will be serving pub-style food, and Treleaven will supply the beverages. There will be more to offer than just wine —local craft beer and domestic brews will be on tap, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. Jersey or no jersey, all are welcome at Treleaven! Holiday Colors That Aren’t Red and Green For whatever reason, as the holidays roll around we all love to bring out the sparkles and red lipstick. We feel the need to amp up the festive outfits and show just how excited we are for Santa to come or for the clock to strike midnight on the new year. And I’m not sure why, but red and green are the standard colors associated with the holiday season. Maybe it’s the garland, the trees, the mistletoe, or the poinsettias. While red and green are great stand-bys, in my humble opinion there are so many more shades that can show your holiday spirit that don’t clash quite so much.
Silver
Whenever I tell someone my favorite color is silver, they think I’m joking. But think about it: it’s basically gray, but turned up a notch. It’s a neutral (my go-to for all outfits) and it’s metallic which gives it something special. So whenever I’m heading to a holiday celebration, silver is my go-to color.
Cobalt Blue
There’s nothing quite as sophisticated looking as jewel tones. While black and white are classics, a rich and vibrant blue catches eyes. It looks good for any article of clothing and never looks bad with black like navy blue can tend to do.
Purple is the color of royalty and so why wouldn’t you wear it? It’s a jewel tone that screams good taste.
Gold

If you want to be the star of your own holiday party, gold is always a good choice. It doesn’t have to be too crazy and can be more understated as an accent or you can go full-on with the sequins. The point is to keep your heart rate up and your muscles warm, so move quickly from one exercise to another. • Write down your workout ahead of time so there is minimal rest periods between exercises. • Determine how long you want to do each exercise. Use either a time limit (30 to 60 seconds) or a specified number of reps (15 to 20 repetitions). • Decide how many circuits you’ll do. Beginners should do one circuit and intermediate/advanced exercisers can do two to three circuits. • Always warm up, cool down, and stretch after your workout.

Our sedentary lifestyles and lack of self-control are the real culprits for our holiday weight gain. This year, choose to make healthy food choices, eat in moderation, and stay active. You aren’t always going to be in charge of your schedule during the holidays so just do the best you can. Be realistic, set small goals, and make the most of your exercise time, even if it is only for a few minutes. Or: How Not To Write An Historic Mystery Novel
There are no real “rules” for writing a novel. More to the point, any rules there might be can be freely broken, but the risk is that such breakage ruins the reader’s enjoyment and/or simply doesn’t work. Famous exception: James Joyce’s Ulysses, though later scholarship indicates that perhaps he never meant to do his “stream of consciousness” in the final product, but that the book (unfinished) which remained really was just that: a stream of consciousness set of notes for a final book. Still, it has challenged and intrigued readers the world over, and intended or not, it worked, at least for most readers. It remains true, however, that when we sit down to a novel we have a certain set of expectations, especially when the novel we’re reading is advertised as a genre: detective story, whodunit, romance, historic fiction, fictionalized biography, etc. Skilled writers might deviate slightly from the established pattern of each genre, but it can only be described as akin to sitting down to a steak dinner to have it taste like oatmeal. Oatmeal may be fine if that’s what you’re expecting. But. So it was when I decided to give my readerly self a little break from too much thinking and analysis and enjoy what looked like an historic (specifically Scottish) mystery with a female protagonist. For the most part, these types of books contain the following elements: a spooky manor or castle; a plucky heroine with unusual talent, an anachronistic independence, mysterious or sad past or some other unique characteristic; a brooding (or crotchety old) laird; a scheming wealthy female neighboring peer; a true romantic hero (he and the brooding laird may be one and the same); a gristly murder or two, and a lot of local color: accents, countryside and quaint villagers, meals, clothing and customs, and a dollop continued on pg 40

Imagine my disappointment when I indulged myself in such a novel —set in Edwardian times, a not particularly interesting period of Scottish history— in an Agatha Christie-like setting of a house party, attended by what seemed to be a lot of English lords and ladies, who end up stuck at the house following a murder (without even a generous second murder to help it along and create a little suspense) until the “procurator fiscal” can arrive to set matters right. At least the writer got the name of the official correct. TRUMP: A Backfiring Hope Trump is the result of disgust for Government failures and a deep need for hope. I get it. Big time. But he is the wrong guy. Bannon in the White House will stain this land for generations. Our greatness is in trouble. This will remove it in the eyes of the world. The man gives credence to Nazi’s for God’s sake. Where in the hell is Common Sense. Trump has us in a trance. I printed a list of over a hundred reasons why Trump should not be President in the October issue. His moral deficit is staggering. (Google Table Hopping – Word on the Street if you missed it.) A few matters in particular removed respect from the Trump equation. I am disgusted that this kind of mind has become the most powerful individual on earth. What potential good he may do comes at too high a price. At what point do you take note of a potential Monster in your midst. His win is proof of the total collapse of Washington. They do deserve all that he brings. But we don’t. Our leaders have degraded our land. There simply is no greatness in today’s Government. Those left behind have had it. The problem is Trump is not a savior. His behavior is cruelly unstable and when the aura clears so too will the majesty of error in selecting such a leader. Imagine anyone you know with a handicap. Stand in front of a mirror. Now make an honest effort to physically imitate and mock their handicap. Twist your face and force your emotion to feel with contempt as

you mock. Google this: Trump vs Handicapped Reporter. His need to emphasize the handicap was prolonged and very disturbing. Now you are experiencing a mindset common to Trump that will reside in the Oval Office. It gets worse. Consider Trumps choice to serve as an equal to or superior to the White House Chief of Staff: Steven Bannon of Breitbart who embraces the White Supremacist Alt right. (Alt right is simply a cloak for white supremacy.) They often end meetings with the Nazi raised arm salute. Placing Steve Bannon in a position of power is an insult to every white cross that honors an American soldier. How pathetically callous, and uncaringly disrespect-

ful. This Bannon thing is bad. We have a man that supports Nazi thinking in the White House. And a leader so ignorant as to not realize the seed he is planting. I Never imagined this reality in America. Other major high level appointees have demonstrated racial tendencies. Minorities and fair whites know it and are watching at the ready. One racist move and cities may well burn. Clearly Trump also has a very stupid and decrepit side. There is a lot of twisted thinking heading for the White House. And the price tag lies in the near future. John McCain flew 23 combat missions prior to being shot down. Demean him in the mirror. Think of him on the torture rack where they broke his bones. You likely can’t stand yourself. If you are Donald Trump this is good logic. Demeaning McCain is perfectly “acceptable” and honorable. Such revered heroic deed as that of McCain is everything American and sends chills through our spine and cause the tears as we feel the great pride of this land. He is no hero to the next leader of America. The list of such things goes on and on and becomes tiring. For just starters multiply the above examples by a hundred other examples of disturbing thinking and a sense of the mental defect we have put in the Oval Office will become clear. Trump supporters see strength in Trump and believe he can force action among the truly leaderless 543 (The House, Senate and the Supreme Court) in Washington, D.C. They did leave E Pluribus Unum behind. Over half of our people. Our system is selfish, ineffective and paralyzed. Fate has been kind to Trump. He will have the House, the Senate and the Supreme Court. The only recourse for Democrats will be Filibusters. On what bright side there is legislation can begin invaluable “left behind” change. Infrastructure, Immigration, Returning to and maintaining jobs in America, Trade and Upward Mobility are primary. These are massive Country building and quality of life issues that got Trump elected and also have favor among Democrats. These are correctly the leading issues. As they fail so goes the nation. A high price will be exacted in Women’s Rights, Gay Rights and many pursuits will not fairly be in keeping with our Nation’s best interests or diversity. The Supreme Court is as unhealthy a branch as it the Legislative. Their mindset is a result of partisanship and does not embrace the people (Citizens United defies our entire Founding) and when Trump appoints a judge or two fairness to all will be jeopardized for decades. This Supreme Court adhering to the Constitution is a lie. Clearly Jefferson and Franklin would revolt with disbelief and severe admonition if they knew the Supreme Court departed so far from their effort as allow one man to contribute a billion dollars to an election. Immigration is a critical issue. To begin, the terrorist threat is very real well into the future. Drugs are a literal human scourge menacing our Cities and Countryside. The Southern border is a floodgate of drugs. The main target, American youth. Don’t be fooled by a slowdown in illegal crossings. Be sure this is temporary. The world is fraught with people fleeing their lands. Not only from Southern South America and Central America North, but from across the seas. Thousands from China, India and the Middle East have already been detained and numbers are increasing. We already have recklessly allowed an estimated 20 million to set up homes and enjoy education, health and other benefits. These folks can’t get a social security card and must work illegally. The problem is doing this under Trump. It is not likely we will remember who we are in this process. Deportation of those that have settled for long periods is cruel and inhuman. With Trump, Bannon and that ilk decency likely will not matter. Two thousand miles of open border across a moral country is a recipe and an invitation especially in these troubled times. Left as is there will be new waves of border crossings and America will further weaken as we simply can’t keep up. It is not wrong to establish effective borders necessary to protect your land. Yet what good if America’s decency is compromised.

So I am nearly 71. I was about 25 when this started. I remember picking up the newspaper at the Atomic restaurant on Jefferson Street and reading about a factory moving overseas. Over a few months I noted that such articles had become common. Those old enough to remember will recall this went on with great frequency for decades. I recall being in awe as our leaders watched the demolition of the American Middle Class. Good non-college jobs paid $20.00 an hour in those days and were plentiful. Everyone was fine. Companies were not in financial danger. But the comradery that held us together after World War II had dissipated and the credo of greed took over. Executives throughout the business world realized that no one would stop them no matter how much they paid themselves. All they have to do is donate to politicians. Our lives were and are for sale by those we send to Washington. It became so in remaining industry that masses were paid a pittance compared to the fruit of their labor. Productivity became an endless pursuit serving only the “top” and with the advent of computers along with the movement overseas quality of life among 10’s of millions was decimated. Owners and Executives took the fruit of labor. Our Country withered. It was systemic failure of the highest order. There was no one at the helm. No one tried to stop this. I am right but I am a tree falling in the woods with no one hearing. Only then (no other policy change will effect this —term limits will fail) will there be true change in keeping with the people. Only then will mankind have a chance. Only then will the likes of Trump lose their attractiveness and be relegated to the dustbin of history as true greatness rises to the surface throughout our political landscape. America would again walk tall with its true essence restored. Our Leadership failure and sale has been colossal and ranks as the single cause of the destruction of the American beacon. The beacon that once was recognized internationally as showing the way to be the best than humans can be. Remove money from Politics and assume a system of public financing and that beacon will once again glow with human justice as the pursuit of human greatness is restored. Then we can bow our heads to the world in shameful apology that we let thinking that caused the holocaust into our once so humble, and so preciously hallowed home of the Presidents of the United States. And time and deed will heal this horrible self-inflicted wound.

Christmas Prime Rib Recipe by: Judy River Ingredients: 1 (6 pound) boneless prime rib roast 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons kosher salt 2 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper 2 teaspoons dried thyme 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 stalks celery, cut into 2-inch pieces 1 carrot, cut into 2-inch pieces 1 small unpeeled onion, quartered & separated 2 teaspoons concentrated beef base (paste) 1 1/2 cups water 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon water
2. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Place the celery, carrot, and onion pieces into the bottom of a roasting pan. Place the roast on top of the vegetables. 3. Roast in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and roast until the meat is browned and an instant-read meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the roast reads 130 to 135 degrees F (54 to 57 degrees C) for medium-rare. Remove from oven, transfer roast to a platter, and cover with a tent of aluminum foil. Allow to rest for 30 minutes. Temperature of the meat will rise about 10 degrees during resting time.
4. To make au jus sauce, skim excess fat from the pan drippings in the roasting pan. Place the pan over a burner set to medium heat, and stir in the beef base and 1 1/2 cup of water. Bring to a boil, scraping and dissolving any brown flavor bits from the bottom of the pan. Strain out and discard the vegetables.
