Anthony Saturno is a singer/songwriter/guitarist that started solely as a guitar player for bands such as The Jess Novak Band, Wagner 3000, All Poets and Heroes, Sampere; and many guest appearances on a wide range of bills. By now he’s out in front of the groovin’ power trio, Atkins Riot. This is a group I like very much. I’ve always been attracted to groups that have one foot in the now so-to-speak, and one foot in the future. And this group does that in a fresh way. Their music is intelligent and still dangerous and edgy. In the few occasions where I’ve met Anthony I recall him looking a little edgy while offering himself as intelligent and enthusiastic. As a performer he gives 100-percent as an authentic and natural player. Saturno expands his horizons by forging a diverse cover/original set list with covers from classic Hendrix and Tom Petty to The Black Keys and Jack White while adding his original tunes like Understand, Dirty Doves and plenty others into the mix. He doesn’t stop with just singer/songwriter type songs. Anthony also writes, explores and dabbles in a variety of music ways such as ambient and melodic loop-oriented projects. With a variety of influences, Anthony Saturno brings a cool vibe to his live set

and seeks to keep his audience intrigued. Ladies and gentlemen: Anthony Saturno. Chuck Schiele: Hello Anthony. Thanks for talking some time to chat with us here at Sounds of Syracuse. Anthony Saturno: Thanks, Chuck! Happy to be here. CS: Ok, Let’s roll. How did you get started in music? AS: Ever since I can remember, there was always music being played in the house by my parents and sister. My Mom was always a huge fan and would quiz me on who was playing on the radio. They all had very different tastes in music, so as the youngest, I got to experience them all and mold into liking and understanding a very wide variety of music at a very young age. It wasn’t until I was about 9 when I realized that music was what I wanted to pursue. I started taking it a little more seriously at home instead of goofing off in elementary band class (which continued into high school). My dad bought a drum set for Christmas. I absolutely loved it. And, I annoyed the hell out of the household by playing all the time. When I was 11, I got a guitar that I had asked for my birthday because I wanted to get more into song writing and melody. I’ve been loving it ever since and having the rhythm and melodic side of music ingrained into my DNA at a young age really helped me in the long run. CS: How would you characterize the essence of what you do as a musician? AS: I play how I feel and what the music makes me feel. When writing, it’s a little easier to transcribe because I know what I’m feeling about the song. As for playing other people’s music, I try to play for the good of the song and imagine what they may have felt whilst writing it. As a performing and recording artist, playing with another person or a group of people is much different than performing solo. You can really sense the energy, differently in each scenario and with what players you’re jamming with. CS: Yeah. That’s the stuff I show up for right there. You teach guitar at Ish Guitars. How is that going? AS: Considering all that has been going on, I have only been able to do lessons from my home studio via online lessons. But it has been quite slow and I only have a couple of students on board. Once Ish is back up and running at their new location, I’ll be back at it full force. CS: I’m very glad to hear this. Good. I enjoy your music, especially your work with the Atkins Riot band! I feel like I hear influences from early Deep Purple vs. Red Hot Chili Peppers all varnished in the attitude of today. And the people in those bands can PLAY. Of course, I could be way off base in my observations. Nonetheless, how did this group come about? AS: Not at all man. Those are definitely a couple bands that have helped morph my musical world, among plenty of others—but you’re not off at all! Atkins Riot really began in high school with Jesse Wilson and Tom Badman. We made a few rockin’ tunes, especially about zombies and just weird things. I loved the name “Atkins Riot” and so I held on to it. In 2018, I brought it back with Billy Harrison and Rob Zaccaria. After a year or so, Sam Roux joined as bass player after Billy took off . It’s just been a blast and true pleasure growing with these dudes as musicians and band mates. We’re starting to write more as a full band rather than bringing in basically full tunes and having everyone learn them, which is a really cool experience and I can’t wait to have some of these new songs out! CS: As a guitar player, who are the guitar players you

listen to? AS: Just like my music influences, I could write down every guitar player I listen to and how they have influenced me and my style of playing. I’ll give you a couple main ones from the beginning and a couple that I’m listening to now. Metallica was a huge influence (Yes the Mustaine’s and the Hammett’s) but especially James Hetfield’s writing and rhythm. Angus Young (First album I ever bought - ‘Highway To Hell’), Jimmy Page, Hendrix, Slash, Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold, Dimebag Darrell from Pantera; the list will Sporting a guitar from Ish Guitars in Syracuse, NY, where he teaches never end. Lately I’ve been jamming a lot of Marcus King, Jason Becker, all the players in Steely Dan (laughs), Al Di Meola, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. And Dan Wagner has always been a huge influence to me in guitar playing and song writing. Again, that list could go on forever. CS: Please tell us about the different projects you’re working in. AS: At the moment, as I mentioned earlier, Atkins Riot is working on completing another album that I cannot wait to come out. There’s a lot of new things that we’re diving into and it’s a whole lotta fun! I’ve also been jamming with Dan Wagner of Wagner 3000 which is a whole other monster. Really neat stuff in that group. Jamie Cunningham and myself (J&A for all you facebookers) are getting together when we can to continue our guitar duo project that we took out on tour earlier this year. Other than that, a few of my friends have been sending over their original tracks for me to lay a guitar part down and that’s been a lot of fun. CS: Good list. You’ve been in some very fortunate situations over the last few years. Things are going well for you—would you agree? AS: 2019 was a huge year for Atkins Riot. We won a SAMMY for Best Rock Recording. We won the Westcott Battle Of The Bands: opened up for Marc Rebillet at Westcott: opened-up for The Marcus King Band at Papermill Island and played Chevy Court at the fair on a Saturday afternoon, memorial day weekend. CS: Five bucks says you’ve got stories. Tell me a story. AS: So this is about as funny as it is terrifying. Probably more terrifying if you’re a musician with plenty of gear. So a couple summers ago, The Jess Novak Band was playing at The Dinosaur BBQ Boneyard stage (I play guitar in JNB too) 5-8ish on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We got everything set up,

started playing a tune and I could’ve sworn I heard thunder. Thought I was going crazy because it was such a nice day all day long. After the song ended, to test my sanity and ears, I ran out on the other side of The Dino and sure enough some very large storm clouds were rolling in. We played about 15 seconds longer until a crack of lighting got everyone right to their feet. Within a few minutes it was downpouring and I mean like standing under a waterfall downpouring. The staff gathered as many garbage bags as they could while we unplugged everything and tried to get the gear to the least water infiltrated spot under a 10x10 open sided tent. The look of terror in everyone’s face as 3-4 inches of water rushed over our pedal boards, power-strips, cases and drums will never be forgotten (laughs). After about 10-15 minutes of it not letting up, we just gave up and just started loading up our vehicles as we and all of our stuff were soaked to the bone. Leaving quite disappointed, I went straight home, took out all my stuff and dried it off to the best of my ability, put some hair dryers on my gear and hoped they would all be dry by the next gig. Turns out everyone’s stuff was fine and we didn’t really need to replace anything... Except Gavin’s drum rug. CS: Hm. Believe it or not I have the EXACT same story from one of my shows at the Boneyard. I remember the sight of the water flowing through the stage with great clarity. Thankfully, I was traveling light with gear that day. Anyway, As a teacher, what is your best advice for those learning music? AS: If you love music and want to better yourself further on your instrument, don’t give up when you get extremely frustrated. That’s when the mind works best to piece everything together to bring you to the next step. Just keep going unless it’s physically painful. Then go see a doctor first, you may just have to adjust your posture. CS: What’s in your near future, musically? AS: A new Atkins Riot album/music videos, and a new JNB album dropping sometime very soon. I’d really like to start playing out regularly again but we all know how that’s going. I’m getting a little more associated with the online scene so we’ll see how that plays out. Other than that I’m continuing to write and practice to be ready when things really start to open up. CS: How can folks stay in touch with your music? AS: Follow me (Saturno Music), Atkins Riot, the Jess Novak Band and J&A on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitch. Also head over to www.atkinsriot.com for some cool videos and music. You can find my solo album “Crash Test” under the “Saturno” tab. Also, new merch will be available once we get the online store up and running. CS: Ok, man, it’s been good getting to know you better. I’ll look forward to hearing more from you. And I hope you (and all of us ) can get back into the live music saddle soon. AS: Thanks, Chuck. It’s been a pleasure. -Chuck Schiele 858 663 9612 “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” ~Albert Einstein

Sports Take by MIKE LINDSLEY

Lifetime MLB Team by Position As we prepare for the first game of the 2020 MLB season (we think owners and players won’t screw even this up after agreeing to a 60-game campaign on June 23rd), here’s some baseball flavor with my lifetime MLB team by position. The criteria is simple. You can’t just take three centerfielders in your outfield. You have to go by position. I take a runner-up for each spot, picked a designated hitter, closer and manager and one pitcher from each side, left and right. Remember, this is for my lifetime only, so you will not see Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig here. This is for me, ML, born in 1979 and now 40 (gulp). I also considered overall career success, dominance in the era, winning no matter the circumstance, me seeing their prime career, overall skill set including defense at the position, my first understanding of the game as a kid, the position being that player’s “true” position, any special trait that enhanced a player’s ability (switch-hitting for example), overall impact on the game and a tiny ounce of personal preference. Catcher: Ivan Rodriguez. Cannon arm, incredible quickness, blocked balls everywhere, made every team he played on better and controlled the field. Hit for power and average. 14time All-Star. 1999 MVP. A truly complete catcher. Class of 2017 Hall of Famer. Runner-up: Gary Carter. First base: Albert Pujols. Hit the stage quickly in 2001 as Rookie of the Year, then won the MVP three times. Future first ballot Hall of Famer. From 2001-2011 there has never been a better stretch of hitting in baseball history as Pujols collected 445 home runs and 1,329 RBI and hit well above .300 the entire time with insane OBP-SLG-OPS numbers. Ivan Rodriguez Pujols was an October monster for St. Louis and led the team to three World Series appearances, winning two rings in 2006 and 2011. Runner-up: Miguel Cabrera. Second base: Roberto Alomar. The ultimate 5-tool second baseman in baseball history. Size, speed, incomparable glove and hit from both sides of the plate. Alomar was must-watch every night. Won two World Series in Toronto and earned the 1992 ALCS MVP. Thrived in October. Entered the Hall of Fame in 2011. Runner-up: Ryne Sandberg. Shortstop: Derek Jeter. 3,000-hit club, five rings, Mr. November, Captain Clutch, the ultimate baseball Albert Pujols professional. Not many have been able

Derek Jeter

Roberto Alomar

to play in New York and in that uniform, and yet Jeter dominated and thrived in the Big Apple. In October, Jeter hit .308 and collected 61 RBI and 20 HR. He hit .310 for his career in the regular season which is close to his playoff mark; remarkable considering postseason play is supposed to be much more difficult. Still the only player with an MVP in the All-Star Game and World Series in the same season (2000). Unfortunately, as a member of the 2020 Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Class, we have to wait until 2021 to see him in Cooperstown because of the pandemic. Derek Jeter was the perfect baseball player and Yankee. Period. Runner-up: Cal Ripken Jr. Third base: Wade Boggs. 20 of 24 seasons hitting .300. The ultimate grinder. The ultimate creature of habit in the game. Consistent. Professional. Leader. Hall of Famer in 2005. Runner-up: Chipper Jones. Left Field: Barry Bonds. 5-tool player and dominated for the Pirates and Giants. continued on pg10

Center field: Ken Griffey Jr. The most electrifying player I have ever seen. Another 5-tool guy. The closest thing to Willie Mays since the 1950’s. Style. Substance. And oh that swing. Played the game the right way. No one loved the game more than Griffey Jr., with the smile and the backwards cap. 2016 Hall of Famer. Without injuries, Jr. might have been the greatest player in MLB history. Runner-up: Mike Trout. Right field: Ichiro Suzuki. Incredible arm and the ultimate professional. A 3,000-hit member and made a fluid transition to the big leagues from Japan. Ichiro paved the way for Japanese Wade Boggs baseball players for decades. Runner-up: Tony Gwynn. Designated hitter: David Ortiz. Owned October. Face of Boston baseball for years. Helped Reverse the Curse and the winning just continued. Should go into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. Ichiro Suzuki is the best ever. Runner-up: Roger Clemens. Closer: Mariano Rivera. Lead, 9th inning, GAME OVER. Mo was even better in October with a 0.70 ERA. 1999 World Series MVP. 2003 ALCS MVP. Won five rings and entered the Hall of Fame as the first unanimous player in baseball history in 2019. Everyone in baseball history has had great hitters and pitchers and managers. Only the Yankees had Mariano and it paved the way for dominance in the sport. Runner-up: Trevor Hoffman. Manager: Joe Torre. “He only had success because of the Yankee payroll” is a pure garbage statement. Torre understood any type of player better than anyone in history and was the right fit at the right time in the Bronx, helping the Yanks to four titles in five seasons from 1996-2000 and two more Fall Classic appearances in 2001 and 2003. Torre was calm, cool, consistent, professional and excellent with the New York media. Runner-up: Bruce Bochy.

started to fade. The industry was changing, and by my teenage years I was still moderately engaged, but not like I had once been. Eventually, I moved by MILLER byBRIAN DEBRA MERRYWEATHER on, but that doesn’t mean that I forgot. It’s this feeling of nostalgia that leaves me fascinated by the showmanship and skill displayed by professional wrestlers, even to this I remember the moment when I found out that pro wrestling wasn’t real. Up until that point, Saturdays were all about THE SMURFS, ALVIN AND THE showmanship aspect. CHIPMUNKS, and GARFIELD AND FRIENDS. Then, one day, I was flipping through the Documentaries like the channels, and laid eyes on The Ultimate Warrior, Jake “the Snake” Roberts, and the Legion incredible BEYOND THE of Doom for the first time. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin have bombastic personalities that allow them to emerge as constant hype machines. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is a guy like Calloway, whose powerful character doesn’t have the same exuberant pizazz as some of his counterparts, yet finds a way to resonate with all of those who watch. THE LAST RIDE has a crossover appeal that wrestling itself does not. That may sound odd, but by exploring the man, and not just his character, it’s an in-depth look at the unfathomable impossibility of the longevity that The Undertaker has had in the industry. While it fails to divulge what goes in to choreographing the matches themselves, it explores virtually all other avenues. Through Mark’s anguished words and actions, it exemplifies what makes him a legend. It’s a little jarring at first to see him as just a regular guy; a soft-spoken fella with a wife and kids, but it’s enlightening to witness the toll that his chosen career path had on his body and mind. Reluctant to leave, yet emphatic that he doesn’t want to end in a disgraceful manner that would harm his legacy, and more importantly, disappoint his fans, it’s the classic conundrum that most professional athletes are forced to face. They all yearn for the perfect coda, yet it remains evermore

The Last Ride continued from pg 13 the WWE Network began airing the limited series THE LAST RIDE. Spanning three years, it was an all-access look into the life of Mark Galloway, better known to wrestling fans around the world as The Undertaker. Notoriously private, it was the first time that the public was given a glimpse into heart and mind of one of most popular and dynamic performers in the history of the industry. The Undertaker made his first appearance in the WWF in 1990, and quickly became a fan favorite. As the dark and mysterious harbinger of death, he was a towering, terrifying figure that rolled his eyes into the back of his head as he laid his opponents to waste. He was the uncommon heel that became almost as popular as the heroes, in large part due to Mark’s incredible performance. As I’ve grown older, I’ve become increasingly appreciative of the skill displayed by these superstars. Like actors in a play, they are putting on a show for the entertainment of millions. Feeding off of the energy of the crowd, adapting when they need to, and selling the absurdity of their craft, they delight fans young and old. Many of the most popular entities, like Hulk Hogan, The Rock, John Cena, Roman Reigns, and

elusive with each passing day. Featuring interviews with many of the players and personalities that worked with Galloway over the years, and highlighted by classic clips and rare backstage access, it’s a look behind the curtain that is rarely afforded to viewers. The series is far more about the man and his craft, and less about the chokeslams and tombstones. Though I haven’t watched a wrestling event in almost 20 years, I still found the series massively entertaining, and enlightening. Eddie’s continued from pg 15 elsewhere (such as Tuna Stuffed Tomato, a vine-ripened tomato filled with tuna salad on a bed of lettuce with wedges of provolone, or Liver And Onions, two tender pieces of calves liver smothered in grilled onions) and new and inventive items (like Pickle Fries - deep fried pickles with green chili aioli dipping sauce) that change with the times! I would be doing a disservice to you all if I failed to mention the most famous item on Eddie’s menu, and an absolute must order, The Original Hot Ham BBQ sandwich! The legend of the “Original Hot Ham” BBQ Sandwich is that on one busy summer day, Eddie Sr. the founder of Eddies, ran out of hot dogs! As the tourists grew hungry Eddie decided to make a sandwich that he only made for his family, a seeded roll piled high with capicola ham! The tourists fell in love and the famous spicy sandwich was born! Kyle and I headed to Eddie’s on a lovely summer evening. As we drove along the shores of Oneida Lake we enjoyed watching the purple storm clouds gather and blow down the lake. The entire trip was filled with me telling my husband about growing up boating on Oneida Lake every summer weekend, swimming at Sylvan Beach and dinner at Eddie’s! As a little kid I remember walking into Eddie’s and being greeted by the biggest pies I had ever seen. I have to admit I was excited to see if my memory was correct about the pies or if they were just something exaggerated by my memory. The moment we walked into Eddie’s I was so happy to see that my memories of gigantic cream pies were absolutely spot on! We arrived at Eddie’s right before the storm hit. We were seated in a cozy booth with a window to watch the storm. Our amazing server, Noah, made us feel welcome and very safe! He explained the booth and menus were freshly sanitized, all of the Eddie’s Meatballs with Ricotta Cheese silverware was wrapped to

reduce contact, and seating was spread out to comply with social distancing. Noah was a real treat throughout our meal, despite wearing a mask you could tell that he loved his job and had a huge smile on his face! At Eddie’s there are a few things you just have to include in your meal: hot ham, Papa’s famous sauce, Eddie’s meatballs, and pie! With this in mind we decided to start our meal with an order Eddie’s Hot Ham BBQ Sandwich of The Italian Greens, Eddie’s fantastic version of a CNY favorite, Utica greens, and of course featuring the star of the show, Eddie’s famous hot ham! These greens are flavorful with the perfect amount of spice! We also decided to try a new menu item, Meatballs With Ricotta Cheese. This sharable dish is made up of three of Eddie’s Famous hand rolled Meatballs served with on a Ricotta Cheese, smothered with their Famous Meat Sauce and topped with fresh basil! Each bite of this dish was absolute perfection on a fork! While we waited for our entrees I enjoyed a Caesar salad while Kyle had a cup of clam chowder. It’s worth noting that all of Eddie’s soups are freshly made in-house daily and the salads use locally grown ingredients whenever available. Eddie’s is also known for serving some of the freshest fish this side of the ocean, so that fact in combination with the summer vibe made us both decide on the seafood dinners. Kyle decided on the Fried Fisherman’s Platter, a huge helping of shrimp, scallops, haddock and clams fried to a golden brown perfection! I decided on the Broiled Seafood Platter with a generous helping of baked fish, large sautéed scallops and tasty shrimp scampi! We both had an order of garlic fries as our side dish and these were a garlic lover’s dream! As I mentioned before no meal at Eddie’s is complete without a slice of heaven, and by that I mean Banana Cream Pie! Kyle decided on slice of strawberry rhubarb pie that he said was better than his moms! The milkshakes are also amazing. Whatever you do, don’t skip dessert! After being stuck in side for months we should all make extra efforts to safely enjoy this beautiful summer, and I can’t think of a better way than a meal at Eddie’s! For more information, menus, and events be sure to check out Eddie’s on Facebook and on their website at https://www.eddies1934.com/

What’s in Your Fridge? I’ve been told to judge a book not by its cover, but by the content of its pages. One should not form an opinion on someone or something based purely on what is seen on the surface, because after taking a deeper look, things may be very different than what was expected. Did you know that the food in your fridge says a lot about your lifestyle and how you prioritize food and health? It’s what’s on the inside that says the most about your life - even, perhaps, the parts you try to hide. From someone’s fridge and pantry, you can get a true idea of their health, lifestyle, income, and even what kind of romantic partner they’ll be. A messy chaotic fridge means you probably have an equally chaotic life. On the contrary, a regularly empty fridge is probably a sign a person is constantly busy and doesn’t have the time to place their health as a priority. If you are someone with an extra clean fridge with all those meals for the week labelled and planned out, well, you may be just a little bit over the top. If you open your refrigerator door and a pile of junk tumbles out, your chances of eating healthy are slim. With the average American now getting 60 percent of his or her calories from processed food, your eating habits are only as good as your supply of food.

•

Hood Cleaning Starting at $299!

Whether you want to lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, or just clean up your diet there’s definitely a better way to stock and arrange your refrigerator for success. Here are a few ways to help you get started:

1.

Categorize and organize

2.

Prep portions in advance

3.

Make protein a priority

When all of your goodies are washed, organized and in their proper place it is easier to see what you have, what you need, and what you would like to eat. Have a dedicated fruit and vegetable drawer, place all your beverages in one area, leftovers in another, and don’t forget to keep all of your raw meats at the very bottom in case they drip. Cut fresh fruits and vegetables ahead of time, or make a fruit salad. Do you like carrots with hummus? What about slices of apple with peanut butter? Find a few healthy snack combos that will work for you and have them on hand ready-to-go so you don’t have to resort to making inevitable junk food purchases while away from home. Label and date the prepped meals you have so you remember what is in there and how long you’ve had it. Eggs should be on every grocery list you make. Regardless of your budget, if you have eggs in your fridge you can whip up a quick breakfast. If you’re in a pinch and need to make dinner on a whim, you will at least have the protein portion of the meal covered.

4.

Grab some colors

5.

Acknowledge the grains and beans

You should have a fruit and vegetable of at least three colors. Grab your carrots, spinach, bananas, mushrooms, or other seasonal hues on each of your grocery runs to outfit yourself for an array of dishes. Be sure to have at least one leafy green on hand at all times that can be enjoyed raw or cooked into a dish you are making. At the beginning of each week, make a slightly larger batch of quinoa, rice, pasta, beans, or something that is filling, nutritious and versatile. Throughout the week you can throw together a quick salad for lunch, incorporate the items into a stew for dinner or serve it as a starch next to a piece of fish or other protein.

6.

Stock water with flavor

8.

Make fridge rules

9.

Seek healthy alternatives to old favorites

10.

Prepare a large pitcher of water with natural flavor from a fruit, vegetable, or herb of your choice. Mint, lemons, limes, berries, oranges, and cucumbers are all good choices. Find your flavor, and keep it stocked. 7. Skip the juice You’re better off quenching your thirst with water than taking a swig of juice when you’re thirsty. Juice adds unnecessary calories and has little to no nutritional value.

In Conclusion: Open up your refrigerator and take a look inside. What does your fridge say about you? Your fridge can not only say a lot about your lifestyle, it can also be an accurate reflection of your health. We’ve all heard the old adage ‘you are what you eat.’ Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being, but the outer fabric of your body as well. If you keep good food in your fridge, you’ll eat good food. It really is that simple. Good luck to you. I have been a personal trainer for over eighteen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! The most rewarding part of my profession is helping one of my clients succeed at reaching their personal fitness goals. Making a difference in someone’s life makes it all worthwhile. I am currently certified by the National Sports Conditioning Association, Apex Fitness Group, and the International Sports Science Association.

Having a few rules for the fridge will help keep you on track. Avoid processed foods. Don’t stock foods that contain trans fats or white flour. If sugar is the first ingredient, don’t buy it. If you see a whole lot of ingredients on a food label, you should avoid it. Do you love flavored non-dairy creamer in your morning coffee? Stock up on unsweetened vanilla almond milk instead. You’ll get the hint of flavor in your java without the sugar and trans fats of flavored creamer. Find something that inspires you - motivational words, a picture that represents you at your best - and put it on the fridge. Remember, it’s the first and last thing you’ll see when you open the door.

Today, though, speech itself has been defined as violence - and while technically that may be an overstatement, what we by NANCY ROBERTS “feel” is given greater weight today than at any time since the Romantic Era. Brew Time by KRISTIN MERRITT

Summer Brews - Part Two Last month we talked about traditional warm weather brews – Shandys, Lagers, Sours, etc. This month is a continuation of that theme, except to hone in on those darker brews… including some campfire and nightcap brews to round out your daytime summer fun. S’mores seem to bring out the kid in all of us. Roasting (or burning) marshmallows over a log-wood fire, turning it into the perfect toasty shade of brown, slipping it off the end of your stick while delicately balancing a hefty half of a milk chocolate Hershey’s bar on a graham cracker square and then squishing the whole thing together using another graham, melding the chocolate with the marshmallow into an ooey-gooey sweet sticky but glorious mess. It’s the perfect summer evening treat! Luckily for us big kiddos, there are a number of beers that pay homage to the s’more and won’t give us sticky paws to deal with. High Water Brewing out of Lodi, CA has an aptly named Campfire Stout (6.5% ABV) that has been on the market for years now and continues to garner rave reviews. You can find this brew in the greater CNY area and it’s definitely something to look for to take along on your next camping trip this summer. It boasts all three components of the classic s’more using 4lbs of graham crackers per beer barrel (31 gallons), chocolate malt, and a natural toasted marshmallow flavoring. I have partaken in this brew for the past few years, as far back as 2015, and it’s definitely one that’ll still be popular years from now. I particularly enjoy how much the marshmallow seems to shine. There’s also a hint of smokiness too. S’more excellent choices (you’re welcome for the dad joke) include: Utica NY’s Saranac Brewery S’more Porter (6.2% AVB) and Chicago, IL’s Off Color Brewing Dino S’mores Russian Imperial Stout (10.5% ABV). Fun Fact: The first published s’mores recipe was noted in the Girl Scout’s Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts handbook in 1927 and originally called “some mores.”

Coffee stouts and porters are also another excellent choice for summer. We drink coffee, iced or hot, all year round, so a coffee beer shouldn’t be any different. It also might be your go-to for a breakfast beer during a weekend of camping. (Hey, you’re on vacation and it’s 5 o’clock somewhere!) Look no further than Brooklyn NY’s famed Other Half Brewing Co. and their I Like My Sugar With Coffee and Cream Imperial Stout that comes in at a whopping 15% ABV! Brewed with vanilla, hazelnuts, milk sugar and coffee, this is sure to get your day starting off right. It’s definitely a very sweet brew but the danger is that it’s unbelievably smooth and full of flavor, so much so that that 15% will sneak up on you for sure! continued on pg 23

This is another of those books I hesitate to review because, while when it was published was wellreceived, it has since become classified as “racist, xenophobic, nativist, monoculturist, and anti-immigration, and worst of all, popular within far-right and white nationalist circles.” It is, without a doubt, a dystopian novel, that is, a novel that explores a bad alternative future, as opposed to a Utopian novel, which imagines a more perfect future for the human race, or some segment of it. In 1516, Sir Thomas More wrote Utopia, coined from the Greek “eu” (good) and topia (place), about a fictional island off the coast of South America where everyone lived in peace, harmony, and plenty. He was hardly the first to try to imagine such a world - Plato had written The Republic, and The Bible included The Garden of Eden. Certainly, there have been hundreds of books written before and since that were both Utopian and dystopian. Many speakers and pundits on both sides of the political aisle, even those in the center, have claimed 1984 (originally, and properly, Nineteen Eighty-Four) as “their” prophetic book, filled as it is with themes of controlled behavior, Big Brother watching, and the sins not just of failing to use Newspeak, but even “thought crime.” If the degree of vitriol in our political discourse is any indicator, Orwell was onto something when he peered into the future (1984 was written in 1948) and envisioned his native country, the UK, as part of Oceania, one of three intercontinental superpowers who trade alliances and wars depending on which status best suits the all-powerful states. With the Internet, “fake news” and “fact-checking,” scrubbing people’s social media accounts of improper ideas and language, and the ability to manipulate images and video to serve a point of view, the idea of a Ministry of Truth (Minitrue) actively erasing unpleasant or undesirable events and statements, and throwing them down the “memory hole,” has a ring of the possible. The Camp of the Saints, while objectionable on a score of levels, does envision a number of events that, in their own way, have begun to appear as reality, as caravans of immigrants have moved to more prosperous nations, and portions of cities have declared themselves “autonomous zones,” while demanding a wholesale change in how things are done, why, and how history is and has been recorded. continued on pg 32

Summer Brews - Part Two continued from pg 21 Other tasty coffee brews to try this summer include: Raspberry Blush, by Mikkeller Brewing Company out of San Diego, CA (4% ABV); while not a stout or porter, this Berliner Weisse brewed with raspberries and coffee makes for an incredibly unique brew and hands-down one of my favorite coffee-flavored beers. It’s refreshing to boot. This one you can find around the CNY area as well. I would also be remiss to mention one of the best brews I’ve had in a long time, from my beer trade buddy in Colorado. Snow on the Grain (6.6%) is a white stout brewed by Timnath Beerwerks in Timnath, CO. It’s a lighter brew, which makes it appropriate for summer, but while it may be on the “lighter” side it certainly does not lack in a “lighter” flavor. It legit tastes like a chocolate covered espresso bean and is phenomenally full bodied. So while you might not be able to find this brew distributed here, some of you may be headed out west this summer or may have friends or family that might be able to obtain a crowler or two for you. Lastly, another summer sipping nightcap good for camping, patio or porch-sitting, is a beer that has been bourbon-barreled. While in the winter, these beers can be considered “warming,” in the summer, they invoke relaxation on a cool clear-skied starry evening. One of our local breweries creates a Russian Imperial Stout that continually hits the high notes on my chart every single year: Middle Ages in Syracuse, NY produces their Dragonslayer Russian Imperial Stout and then ages it for over a year in freshly emptied and unrinsed Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels which infuse notes of oak, vanilla, and of course, bourbon, into their delectable stout. The complexity and smoothness of their Bourbon Barrel Aged Dragonslayer is one that I look forward to drinking and also storing/aging in my own personal collection of basement beers, every single year. 2019’s version is out for purchase and consumption at the brewery with an ABV of 12.1%, and she’s a tasty one. A great second bourbon-barreled choice is Cooperstown NY’s Brewery Ommegang Bourbon Barrel Vanilla Smoked Porter (10.4% ABV). Vanilla dominates, but it’s woody and smoky, with hints of chocolate and caramel as well. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable brew. The point is, don’t limit yourself to light lagers and tart sours this summer. You can still enjoy a dark brew even when the sun stays out later and the nights are warmer. Cheers! And enjoy!

Patio Furniture Ideas:

Inventive Ideas to Make Your Space a Reflection of You Opening up your home to the outdoors is a great way to expand your living space. Just like the interior, your patio furniture should be relaxing and represent your style and tastes.

Fun With Pallets

Pallets are used in everyday shipping and can often be purchased for next to nothing. There are several different ways you can use the wood from these pieces to create unique patio furniture. Lining several pallets up and placing a cushion on top of them makes for a comfortable couch. You can also suspend one from

a large tree or roof and place a small mattress on it to create an outdoor swing bed. By painting it and adding legs, you will have a functional coffee table.

Seating in the Shade

Traditional patio furniture requires that your seating is a chair or couch located on a deck or terrace. In fact, you could add some desired seating around your favorite shade tree. Tree benches are a great addition to any outdoor space and can either be purchased or made from the spare wood you may have around the house.

Old Tires

Old tires do not have to end up in landfills. Instead, they can be repurposed to be a

stylish end table. By stacking two or three and then painting them a vibrant color, you can add a rustic feel to your outdoor space. To turn it into a table, simply add a glass topper or piece of wood. Tires do not have to just be end tables. In fact, you can add a cushion to the center to make it a comfortable ottoman or simple stool. You can also add a planter in the middle.

Repurpose Terracotta Pots

You can add brilliant colors and useful designs by repurposing your old terracotta pots. By turning them upside down and adding another pot to add some height, you can have useful end tables that are better than the old standby. These pots are durable and sturdy. You can easily repaint them to match your space or other patio furniture pieces.

Open Center Tables

Patio furniture should be functional. Sure, a traditional picnic table is functional enough as a place to set your plates and drinks when you are eating outside. However, if you open up the center just a little, you can put in a cooler. This allows you to keep cold drinks within easy reach during your meal. Not everyone likes the idea of having a cooler in the middle of his or her table, however. For those who don’t care for the cooler idea, the space can be used for other things. Succulent plants add beauty to a dinner table. You can also add useful herbs to help enhance your meal. Decorating your outdoor space is a fun way to let your personality show. You can take everyday objects and turn them into fun, functional pieces that everyone will be talking about.

My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

Sticks and Stones Through Time In, “Hell and Other Destinations,” the former and first female secretary of state, Madeleine Albright, suggests we need to know that many Americans from South America, Central America and other nations in North American find it curious that many U.S. citizens regard only other U.S. citizens as Americans. (And sometimes not all of them.) Perspectives differ. I went light on the pronouns in the preceding sentences. Writers should leave no doubt as to which nouns the pronouns they use refer. Grammatically, pronouns serve to facilitate communication by eliminating the repetitious use of subject and object nouns. In casual conversations, use of personal pronouns is becoming more complicated within the larger circle of already fraught we/they/us/them and he/she discussions.

Syracuse’s Newest Sports Bar SYRACUSE

Our understanding of some nouns has changed. In June, the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination on the bases of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin, applies to gay and transgender individuals. In 1964, most people understood the term “sex” to the male and female genders, and to sexual activities themselves. In the film based on real events, “On the Basis of Sex,” Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s secretary/legal assistant suggests to Ms. Ginsburg that she substitute the term gender for sex in a legal brief, because the term sex might conjure up salacious or yucky imagery. In his dissenting opinion in the June 2020 SCOTUS ruling, Justice Samuel Alito argues that in 1964, the term “sex” meant neither gender nor sexual orientation. In the June 23 New York Times, MIT Assistant Professor Devin Michelle Bunten argues that terms such as “gender” and “sex” erase the identities of non-binary and trans people. In terms of descriptive categories, it seems logical that gender includes everyone. Specific gender subsets exist within the larger group. And shouldn’t civil rights apply to continued on pg 28

Sticks and Stones Through Time continued from pg 26 everyone? That is the American Way, isn’t it? Historically gender restrictions have tipped heavily against women. While most people no longer use ethnic or racial slurs, or at least in public, it is still common for “some people” to use gender slurs mostly related to sexuality, to describe women. Some women use gender slurs against each other. I play golf. I once heard that golf is an acronym for “Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden.” My own internet research and a recent article in Table Hopping suggest that term golf originates from the Scottish term for “strike” and perhaps from the Germanic word for “club.” And, while golf is not for gentlemen only, the rules of golf acknowledge physical differences based on gender and age: there are men’s tees, ladies’ tees, and senior citizen tees. The game follows the rules of Golf, and then, committee rules, local rules, league rules, seasonal rules, and stroke play and match play rules. When I was a newcomer to the sport, fellow golfers at Burnet Park Golf Course Club House, male, presented to me the Junior Golf Foundation’s, “A Summary of The Rules of Golf” and, later, offered to lend me the clubhouse copy of Kellie Stenzel’s “The Women’s Guide to Golf: A Handbook for Beginners,” a book I’d already purchased, was studying and still review. In 2015, both books were new to me and helpful. Neither book provided rules or etiquette guidance for playing golf during a pandemic. To help golfers from having to touch pins and reach into cups touched by other golfers during this time of COVID 19, most courses have fitted cups with foam liners which variously could be above, below, or even with the level of the green. Some

courses have installed cups which rise 1” above the green and block access to the hole, or have installed raised cups which, while below the green surface, are shallower than a normal cup. From what I’ve read and seen posted at courses, during COVID 19 play, if a golfer’s ball hits the pin, the golfer has cupped the ball. Of course, a too fast shot could hit the pin and fly two or three feet sideways while a better putt could gently roll across the foam insert and sit on the edge without touching the pin. And, what about holes in one? One PGA blog suggests that no matter what, it is up to golfers to call their putts in or not. Golf is a game of integrity. One online dictionary defines “integrity” as: 1. the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; 2. the state of being whole and undivided; 3. the condition of being unified, unimpaired, or sound in construction; 4. internal consistency or lack of corruption in electronic data. Integrity requires that individuals and groups not ignore ongoing situations and conditions amid nostalgia for some imagined past. Yesterday’s practices, vernacular and realities have given way to what is happening now. 2020 differs enormously from 2019 which differed from 1865 which differed from 1776 which differed from 800 BC/BCE or 700 AD/CE however you slice it. Today, personal safe space might protect us both from the Sars-COV-2 virus and from succumbing to the given heat of any newly emerging moment. I hope the cups on golf courses return to the previous configurations soon. I hope things get better for everyone. Happy Independence Day.

His disgraceful deeds are endless. 30%, at least are fine with this. He does not understand Americans dominate enemies; we diffuse angered Americans by addressing their cause. This reaches into the heart of our Constitution. I am going to give you the most valuable and important argument of them all. All lands, even the cruelest and worst, have policies. Some of the worst had highly successful infrastructure and economic successes. And in the midst of much successful policy the worst sublimated and destroyed populations. Policy is important. Yet it is always “Values” that determine quality of policy and the quality of pursuit. Quality and values are why our Constitution is spine chilling. If our Constitution had adhering and intent quantification, we would have maintained the finest in human pursuit. When policy has a base line that recognizes fair and equal human values, evil is sublimated and the finest moves forward. It is values first and foremost. When evil rises it is a certainty that policy will embrace evil and wrong and of course evil will lie and try it make it look good. 30% are ok with this. Then there is the Supreme value that we are not speaking of, where most damage is done. As values are diminished, so too is the Supreme Value of the quality of our children’s thinking. Every day they pick up on something that Trump says or does in an attempt to reduce others. It is blatant and everywhere. He attempts non-stop to harm the lives and reputations of others. He is a degrading name caller. He degrades looks and gender and race.

He fires people for disagreeing and replaces them with high IQ, low values, and low class and obsequious followers. So sucky they can upset your stomach. It is the nature of children to learn and to form. Young minds are sponges eager for guidance and naturally respectful of the thinking of adults and leadership figures. An entire generation is being formed in an era of degradation and shame. The moral void that Trump has caused has an enormous price tag. When your President speaks of grabbing pussy as being ok, and white supremacists are good people, and calling women fat and ugly pigs, and calling Africa shithole countries, and lying about and insulting John McCain, and insulting the parents of dead warriors, and endless racial slurs and insults, and walking through changing rooms scarring the minds of naked young pageant contenders, incurring numerous sexual abuse allegations, and paying off witnesses, and blatant obstruction of Justice, and blatant dictatorial abuse of department heads, and cheating charities, and environmental destruction, just to name a few. The evil his followers accept is unfathomable. This does not end. He gives vile people and activity credibility. He re-tweets disgust. He retweeted a post by John Stahl that attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calf.). It read: “Anyone know what’s going on with Poly Grip? I’ve noticed lately she is sporting a poorly marked 2nd set of eye brows. In another he said Pelosi should have her mouth taped shut. He ridiculed dentures and accused Pelosi of drinking. He cannot contain the hatred that runs through his veins. Trump accused Joe Scarborough of Murder. (The spouse of the dead woman Trump accused Joe Scarborough of killing called on twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to remove the Trump bile that perverts the memory of his wife.) And let’s not forget Rosie O’Donnell, Crude, Rude, Dumb Fat and Fat Pig and on and on and Megyn Kelly, Blood coming from everywhere meaning her vagina, Mika Brzezinski bleeding badly from a face lift, and Carly Fiorina, calling her horse face, and Elizabeth Warren Pocahontas, Goofy, Crazy and Lowlife. Why would any woman support him? And why would any man that thinks he is a real man? This kind of thing is endless. He does not stop and Republicans do

not hold him accountable. His disgrace to this land is boundless and endless. 30% are fine with this. For this country to retrieve any credibility this man needs not to just be defeated, he needs to be demolished. A close defeat will send a message to the world that this was not an anomaly but that something long range, or perhaps permanent has gone wrong with the American psyche. Anything other than a major defeat will finish the job and American wonder will be history in the eyes of the world. We will be forever tarnished as a failed pursuit with a land saturated with unredeemable citizens. The Trump economy is a misnomer. It is con for the rich. It has no quality as it has no values. It emphasizes greatness yet demonstrates illusion and self-destruction. On the surface it has enjoyed a temporary appearance of success, yet the truth is in the underlying veneer, which clearly exposes a devasting future of vast economic disparity and vast human inequality and global environmental destruction. It is based on deregulation of massive corporations so the massive corporation can regulate you and manipulate your freedoms and consume the world’s climatic balance and resources. CEO’s live budget to budget. The common good does not matter. We have lost control of them and controlling them is all that can save us. Trump pulls down the flap and kisses them. The answer: We don’t have to start over. The finest system in all of history or all that posterity will ever develop is ours now: The Constitution. We simply don’t live it. Admit we are land of bribery. End Citizens United and remove Corporate Power and monied influences. Gut Lobbies and start over with “citizens first” governing: “Define the Constitution. Define intent at every level. (For example, the 14th amendment never in the slightest way intended for a Corporation to have personhood) Develop adhering principle and consequence. Pass the law. And the Grand Finale: “Live the Law”.

The Camp of the Saints continued from pg 22 The title of the book comes from the Book of Revelations, the final (and sometimes disputed) book of the New Testament, which predicts the coming “great battle” for Earth and the souls of mankind. The verse from which the title is lifted reads: “And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. And they marched over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them.” Perhaps had he not chosen this title, the rest of the book might have been read with more forgiveness for exploring a question that should actually be considered: how do you blend highly disparate cultures when movement has become so rapid, and wealth so unevenly clustered? In fact, it is a generous and good impulse that sets off the entire terrifying chain of events in the story. A group of priests working in India (in the 70s, a nation many saw as one of the most impoverished and suffering in the world) conceive of what they think is a kindly plan: facilitate the adoption of poor children by European parents so that they can be fed, clothed, sheltered, and educated. But when the demand for such adoption far exceeds the ability of families to adopt, the governments attempt to slow, or halt it. It’s too late. The desperate people of India now see this road as one to the “land of plenty” for not just their children, but themselves; and not a lucky chance, but a right. They commandeer ships, overloading them, and set out for their place in the world of the “haves.” As the Armada makes its way toward the beaches of Europe, other people (and Raspail does, in a way we find inappropriate today, classify them as the “black and brown”) begin to become restive, and soon the flotilla of ships is joined by people marching up towards Europe from the south. The reaction of Europeans is as mixed as our own as we saw video of several thousand people per group, in repeated groups, making their way up from the south into the US - some of us utterly opposed to wholesale “invasion;” some of us believed it was their right as human persons to seek a better life; and some

were completely at a loss, not knowing whether it was a threat or a promise. The same individual might have held each of these thoughts and feelings simultaneously, as well as wondered about the bigger problem of assimilation. This is also one of Raspail’s themes. Assimilation is a two-way street. Historically - far in the past - assimilation was a challenge, but it happened, of necessity, at a slower pace. When the movement of a family from one place on the globe to another took enormous effort and a long time, fewer people moved at any given time. The receiving location wasn’t likely to be overwhelmed (though they may have felt they were; all our notions are relative), and those arriving weren’t competing with scores of others in their situation for opportunities in their new home. Because the new arrivals were a distinct minority, the pressure was on them to conform to the norms of the new land - though just about every culture to arrive in especially the US have brought with them elements of their lives that were adopted and enjoyed in their new home. But if you adjust the dynamics of a mass migration to Raspail’s era, the numbers create a problem. Raspail doesn’t cower from the ugly side of the story: it’s the “white and privileged” versus the “brown and oppressed.” In the European nations, the residents line up predictably, with those nearer the bottom fearing their own precarious spot will be taken, and those nearer the top able to dive into their pity and humanity. But as the numbers begin to reverse, and the “white and privileged” become outnumbered, the Army and police are expected to manage the situation - and the political class worries about how to handle the public relations and retain power. Eventually, many of the Europeans organize themselves into protesters, who realize things are falling apart and begin to loot and riot, while others flee further and further north to escape the growing chaos. One of the most ringing lines in the book for me, watching what is occurring right now, was the statement of one of the sympathetic Frenchmen: “Let’s tear down this mess and start all over!”

Tales from the Vine

by DALE CASSANDRA PHILLIPHARRINGTON

Celebrity Vineyards With America’s enthusiasm for wine, it seems only natural that vineyards would be a popular investment, and who better than recognizable names to go on those wine labels. Some of these well-known personalities are naturals to be partnered in the wine industry, and some might surprise you. But make no mistake, from the lush greenery of Napa Valley California to the beautiful rolling hills of Italy and southern France, vineyards can be a fascinating and challenging past-time or a full-blown industry for their owners. Here are just a handful who are participating: Francis Ford Coppola, successful film director, has taken to the wine business like a true Italian, with the Rubicon Estate Winery in Napa Valley, (renamed Inglenook in 2011), and does some directing up there as well. Gérard Depardieu, French movie star, has approached his career as vintner with as much enthusiasm as he would a starring cinema role. After purchasing Chateau de Tigne, Anjou, in Loire Valley, France (where else?) he has put his acting career on the back burner as he oversees his beloved vineyards. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie purchased a vineyard called Chateau Miraval in Provence, France, touting their Brangelina Rose wine; but since their split, who got the vineyard is up for grabs.

Francis Ford Coppola and the Inglenook Estate Winery in Napa Valley Mike Ditka, legendary football coach to the Chicago Bears, for whom it was only fitting that he partner in winemaking to serve at his steak restaurants; located in Mendocino County, California, they specialize in full-bodied red wines to be enjoyed with red meat and pork chops (Mike’s favorites). Like many celebs who simply lend their name (and their money) to vineyards, “Iron Mike” is not out picking or stomping grapes, but he does enjoy input (and tasting) from time to time. Legendary football player Joe Montana, who partnered with longtime Beringer winemaker Ed Sbragia, created a joint venture called Montagia, (Montana, get it?) located in Napa CA.

1 lb pasta of choice (I prefer rigatoni) 1 cup garlic scapes sliced (about 10-12 scapes) 1/4 cup pine nuts 1/2 cup Extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese 1 cup basil leaves 1/2 cup sundried tomatoes (if in oil drain first) 2 cups half and half

Garlic Scapes are only here for a short time so find them at your nearest farmers market and get creative!

Cook pasta el dente and put aside. Rinse garlic scapes in warm water to soften slightly. Add scapes and remainder of the ingredients (except half and half) into a food processor and blend on high until blended well. Add pesto and half and half to a sauce pan and cook on low for 10-15 mins. Add the pasta to the sauce and cook for another 5 minutes until evenly coated. Top with Parmesan and fresh basil.

Celebrity Vineyards continued from pg 33 Dan Marino, another football great, lends his name to his signature label Vintage 13 Marino Estates, in Washington state along the Columbia River. Turning out award-winning full-bodied reds, the vast vineyard is called Passing Time, and what better way than sipping your own private label after getting beat up for 17 years as the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. Martha Stewart announced a collaboration with the American winery Gallo to produce value-marketed wines to be sold at Kmart. Now, Martha herself doesn’t play an active role, but her name has worldwide appeal, and Martha does everything with good taste, including her moderately priced wines. Dan Aykroyd, actor, comedian and all-around talented guy, owns and operates Dan Aykroyd Vineyards in Canada, his homeland, which produces moderately priced hearty reds and several white varieties, with Aykroyd himself an enthusiastic participant. (Yes, in spite of the climate, Canada turns out some first class wines.) Mario Batali, celebrity Italian chef, owns a vineyard in Tuscany, Italy (where else?) named La Mozza, where he rolls up his sleeves and approaches winemaking with the same zeal as his cooking in New York City and Las Vegas. Michael Chiarello, another celebrity chef and restaurateur in Yountville, CA actually lives on his family vineyard, features his fine wines at his restaurant Bottega, and like a good Italian, is a hands-on vintner; his small winery, Chiarello Family Vineyards, produces five estate wines from the 20-acres which he personally oversees. Madonna, pop singer, took a different route by purchasing a vineyard in the Leelanau Pennisula of Michigan, where her parents (the Ciccones) operate this small vineyard due north of Traverse City, which bears their name. Not a place you want to live in the winter, but it produces excellent grapes in the albeit short summer months. Fess Parker, old Davy Crockett himself, left Hollywood in the early 1970s to pursue a career in the wine and hotel business after a successful albeit short career as a raccoon hat-wearing pioneer and did very well for himself. The vineyard, in Los Olivos near Santa Barbara CA, lives on, still maintained by his family (but do they wear coonskin hats?). Sting (popular British singer and lead vocalist for the rock group Police) spends much of his time at his vineyard Tenuta il Palagio, located in Tuscany, Italy. Sting and his wife Trudie actually make their home on the estate, which was old and deteriorated before Sting lovingly restored it and no doubt serenades those lucky grapes to help them grow. Taking an active role in turning out fine wines, he tells those vines, “I’ll be Watching You,” and no doubt he is. Of course, no list would be complete without Thomas Jefferson, third president of the U.S. Not only was he America’s first foodie but a major collector and importer of fine French wines. Until the early 1800s, most Colonists were making and drinking hard apple cider but Jefferson was a major contributor to America’s love affair with wine. While Jefferson himself never was actually in the business, he served and oversaw his imports with great care and was certainly a connoisseur of fine wines, preparing America for its wine revolution to come decades later, and we thank him. So next time you’re in a wine shop, you might want to take a few minutes to peruse the shelves, ferreting out some overlooked celebrity offerings. You just might be pleasantly with surprised new discoveries.
