Mangia Italian Grill Sometimes one word says it all, and when you are hungry for great food there is no better word than Mangia! They are open year round, Tuesday thru Sunday, serving Dinner until 9 pm, Lunch is served Saturdays beginning at 11 am and they also serve Sunday Brunch from 10 am to 2 pm. It is a word with the magical power of conjuring happy memories of gathering with family and friends, in rooms full of loud conversations and belly laughs, while being surrounded by the overwhelming smell of deliciousness cooking in the background until someone emerged from the kitchen and shouted “Mangia” indicating that it was time to eat. It is a word that you heard when you walked into your Nonna’s house after being told you were too thin even if you were on a diet, it is a word that you heard when entering a friend’s parents’ home for the first time and you were elbowed by your Italian friend and told “you better eat and have seconds!” With their friendly staff, delicious hand crafted recipes using all fresh, locally purchased ingredients,

Kyle and I arrived on a busy Saturday night. We were seated by the friendly hostess in a comfortable booth overlooking the rapidly flowing Seneca River. The restaurant was buzzing and there was a large birthday party on the other side of the restaurant. We were soon greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable server, Kaylee. We began our meal with an order of Calamari Fritti, hand breaded calamari that were lightly fried and golden brown and served with marinara sauce and Fresh Mozzarella Fritta, hand breaded medallions of flash fried fresh Mozzarella. The Calamari was delicious and perfectly prepared and not at all greasy. Christopher Dale A Real-Deal Traveling Troubadour Tours Through CNY Its easy to be swept away with all the fast lane nonsense in the world to which we refer “the music biz.” It’s an exciting place to be, after all … the creativity, the colorful characters involved, the newest buzz. Folks come and go. Scenes come and go. The underlying politics shift constantly based on how one might perceive their “who to know” list. Even though it is my chosen industry for all its healthy, artistic and sometimes glorious opportunities —like anything— it comes with a lot of the same downsides as other industries, including those who take themselves more seriously (ugh!) than they do their craft. Shucks. At times I’ve even probably been that guy. Christopher Dale is not “that” guy. Even at first glance, his modesty is obvious. He’s a casual dude in flipflops, jeans, t-shirt … maybe a ball cap. He’s the guy blending in with the collective laughter of those cool folks across the room taking in the music. If you pass by him while navigating the room, he’ll say “Hi, how are ya?”

in neighborly fashion while engaging you in ordinary conversation that is light yet relevant, sharing a few laughs with you. One might even think (assuming you’re meeting him for the first time) “cool dude … wonder who he’s here to see, tonight.” And then, pretty soon, you see him approach the stage with his guitar and boyish smile only to commence slaughtering you sweetly with one super-catchy song after another. You find yourself singing along by the 2nd chorus and then notice 4 days later that you’re still humming these hookheavy tunes. And that’s when Gift Certificates Available you realize how cool it is that your bro, Christopher Dale, is actually an enormously gifted songwriter who has the ability to translate something profound while singing about ordinary stuff. Makes jingles. He even uses his music to do good things for the city or charity events. And while he’s established himself as a San Diego Music staple, he remains your “bro” first. And then he hits the road singing all across the US, and into Mexico and Canada with his “Spring Across America Tour.” Chris is scheduled for a few appearances in Syracuse, namely April 23, 6pm at Funk & Waffles; and also Limp Lizard-Liverpool on the 25th at 8pm. He also plans to make the rounds with the variety of open mics in the area, so he can get to know all you people. If you are a songwriter in the area, I highly recommend that you make these shows. But, let’s have a chat with him, now. Chuck Schiele: Hey, Chris. I’m very happy to hear you’ll be swinging through Syracuse on your spring tour. Christopher Dale: Thanks, Chuck. It’ll be good to see you. I’m looking forward to the beauty of the region, and meeting all the nice music lovers up there. CS: I think of you as a “great” songwriter. You usually have fresh subject matter when it comes to writing songs. Where does it come from? How do you do that? How do you cultivate your inspiration? CD: Well, it comes from many places. Experiences, self-therapy, interactions, something that was said or that I saw, some messin’ up and my butt. Anything’s game! As much as possible, I like to draw on or write from the common experience perspective. Sometimes interesting concepts or contrasts take me for a ride. Many times, I start with an idea and it comes out as something else. As a songwriter, the message or story and the melody it fuses with is most important, then the production. When the melody and chord changes come into play, I start to tweak words and syllables. I re-write, re-write and

re-write. I believe that’s the core of the songwriting process. There’s different ways to say the same thing and I really enjoy exploring that phase in order to try and present the lyrical content in the most interesting or descriptive way possible. I also like when an opportunity allows me to try and be clever or humorous. Lately, I do most of my productive writing between 3am-7am. Something just seems to wake me up and away I go. No text messages, Facebook or anything else vying for my time and attention. The overall craft of songwriting is like fishing. You have to have patience. Some days you catch something worth keeping. Most days, you’ve gotta throw ’em back or use them for bait. Then there are those days when you’re just out there drinking beer and enjoying the scenery ‘cause it just isn’t happening. You keep coming back trying to land a BIG one. You experiment with different hooks, lines and sinkers. Then one day you realize your freezer is full. CS: You’re a full-time musician. What does it take to survive that challenge? CD: Toughskin Jeans and the tentacles of an octopus. You have to have your grubby little hands in a lot of different cookie jars. Lots of gigging, jingles and a music in elementary schools program. Mostly local stuff the past few years though, as I was the primary caregiver to my musician grandpa. I do a lot of solo stuff and private events. Spending a larger length of time in one geographical area creates the need to diversify even more, when it comes to performing in local venues. Playing music in sports bars was easy money but I found it hard to explain to the patrons that they are supposed to clap at the end of a song, not during. These days, I pretty much create and produce all my own shows. I have a band and also collaborate with many talented musicians that call San Diego home. Mixing and matching, makes every show different. I’m particularly

excited by the new variety project, FUNNER, I have going with long time friend and piano man, JD Boucharde. It’s heavy on the crowd participation using mash-ups, sing-a-longs and parodies. It’s an opportunity for me to really test my passion for being an entertainer as well as showcase a different style of songwriting. We have this chemistry that allows us to playfully tease each other and have a lot of fun. CS: You’ve been at this a long time. Share a few highlights from your music career? CD: We’ll, there are 2 things that stand out to me, that happened within days of each other. One involved performing; the other was the action of a fan. First, a female fan whom I met while on tour in Ohio, visited me in San Diego and went as far as riding her unicycle for 2 miles, in rush hour traffic, to the station of San Diego’s #1 morning radio show. The net R result was she hijacked an hour of live airtime to promote music she believed in, mine. So amazing and unique was her stunt that the segment was replayed throughout the rest of the year as part of the “Best of The Jeff & Jer Show”. Second, two days later, said fan accompanied me to Dodger stadium for what would be my first ever performance of the Star Spangled Banner in conjunction with the Dodger’s Independence Day Fireworks Celebration baseball game. As I finished singing, “and the VOTED home of the brave”, a squadron of BEST BURGER! jets flew overhead and I was in such awe that the coordinator had to 426-9672 come out onto the field, tell me to 238 Harrison St. wave to the crowd and lead me off. good song, generally speaking? Can you name a perfect song? CD: Lyrically speaking, a good song is one that I immediately connect to, usually through a common experience or a story that is descriptive to the extent that you can paint a picture of it with your eyes open. It could also be a song that provokes an emotional reaction or opens my mind up to something new and interesting. Production and dynamics “Being able to follow my passion has been an can really take it all amazing journey I’m absolutely grateful for.” to another level. That being said, there are songs I didn’t even know what they were talking about but loved them for their musicality and the way that made me feel. CS: Name a Perfect song? CD: There are so many different moods that I feel it’s more like it can end up being the perfect time when hearing a particular song. There are quite a few songs that are perfectly written from a cohesive standpoint. A few of my favs that come to mind at this moment are “Thank You” (Zep), “God Only Knows” (Beach Boys) and “Hallelujah” (Cohen), with Jeff Buckley’s rendition being the definitive version. CS: Do you have a favorite that you’ve written? CD: I’ve written in a variety of styles covering many different subjects that have served me well. Again, with music, mood and the moment are such a determining factor. Because of this, my favorite song is ever changing. I could narrow it down by the number of requests I get for a song, to two in particular. “Here I Am” is a ballad that basically proclaims, “Take me as I am”, which is heartfelt and universal. “Waitress” is an upbeat pop song that depicts a quirky love story and has a crowd participation element to it, “He’s in love!” Both songs are around 10 years old and it seems no matter how many times they hear these songs, the audience

reaction is always like it was the first time. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of playing them either. CS: I love “Waitress. Enough to make reference to it in one of my own tunes, So, what’s your best moment in your career? CD: Best moment in my career? That’s a tough one! I guess I’d have to say it was playing a show, early in my solo career, at Belly Up. It was packed and people we’re singing along. It was then that I could see by the look on my mom’s face and by her subsequent comments that she understood that I have to do what I’m doing and thankfully, people want to come along for the ride. My family’s support has been nothing short of incredible! They come to as many shows as they can because they truly enjoy it. They really are my biggest fans. If it’s a venue I regularly perform at, before my 91 yearold grandpa even sits down, the server sets a beer in front of him. CS: Your worst gig war story? CD: Aside from occupational hazards such as the occasional crappy soundman, rude staff or drunken idiot, I tend to have dreams about gig mishaps more than actually experiencing them. Since you threw the word “war” in there, I can think of a few times I was actually wounded, but the gigs weren’t bad. There was the time on my b-day that I decided SUNDAY APRIL 16TH to jump off a pool table during the 10am to 2pm gig and sprained my ankle with still yet another set to go and a ½ hour drive ahead of me after that. CS: Nice. CD: Happy Birthday to me! The other time was at a charity golf tournament sponsored by Hooters. I was ADULTS: $27.95 in the middle of my set and some CHILDREN UNDER 10 $12.95 drunken dude decided he wanted to grab the mic while I was singing and as he pulled it off the stand, it hit me square in the mouth and gave 4PM-6PM Tuesday-Friday me a fat lip. Tales from the Vine by BEN BICAIS
The Art of Wine Tasting The basics of tasting wine are relatively simple to learn. Once the fundamentals are mastered, the nuances and details can be enhanced over a lifetime. Like any other skill, tasting wine requires practice, and consistency is probably the most important factor. One helpful strategy an aspiring wine taster can pursue is tasting with a friend that has superior knowledge. Questions can be addressed, and you will quickly become comfortable with this unnecessarily intimidating subject. Another important strategy for a beginning wine taster is to taste several wines side-by-side that share at least one common variable. This could be the varietal, style, AVA of origin, or any combination of the three. Tasting blind will minimize any prior opinions or stereotypes. You may be surprised to discover that less-expensive wines are more pleasing to you.
The Essentials of Tasting Wine
It is imperative that you taste in spotlessly clean glasses. The most common contaminants in unclean glasses are invisible molecules left behind by cleaning products. Even high-end restaurants can be guilty of this faux pas. It is best to thoroughly hand wash glasses with unabrasive soaps and hot water. It is beneficial, but not necessary to use varietal-specific glasses when tasting wine. Research has shown that the shape of glasses really does make a difference in the sensory experience.

The basics of tasting wine are relatively simple to learn. Once the fundamentals are mastered, the nuances and details can be enhanced over a lifetime.
Overview of the Tasting Process
Wine tasting employs much more than just the taste buds, although they are very important. Your palate is a term for how taste buds on your tongue translate particular flavors to your brain. The palate can perceive only four basic flavors: sweetness, sourness, saltiness, and bitterness. Most of the subtle flavor components of wine are actually picked up by one’s sense of smell. Although many of our daily perceptions are unconscious, making a concerted effort to pay attention to several things makes the tasting process more educational and rewarding. Despite the mystique that surrounds many wine “experts”, tasting wine can be broken into simple steps. Wine knowledge usually stems from practice and confidence, not any inherent superiority. Of course, some people have more developed senses than others. An extreme example is Robert Parker, widely regarded as the most influential wine critic in the world. Mr. Parker’s tasting ability is derived from his natural ability to be keenly aware of his senses. It is within the grasp of the vast majority of people to confidently differentiate varietals, styles, flavor profiles, and flaws when tasting wine. Tasting wine requires not only a grasp of your senses, but also the ability to articulate (with the proper vernacular) your thoughts about a particular wine. continued on pg 10

Relevance of Sight in Tasting Wine
Your sense of sight will reveal a lot about a particular wine before smelling and tasting it. Immediately after pouring, check to see how clear the wine is. While haziness may simply indicate a full-bodied, unfiltered red wine, in any other style it is usually cause for concern. Wines will often taste the way that they look (an unrefined look may indicate a clumsy, unfocused wine). Viewing the color of the edge of a wine in a glass will give you an indication of its maturity (or lack thereof). Mature, aged-worthy reds will have a deep crimson, or even brownish look. Too much brown usually means that the wine is past its prime. The rim of a white wine will generally be light yellow in youth, and progress to an amber color with age. After your initial visual impressions, swirl the wine in your glass. While this may be tricky at first, you will pick it up quickly. This reveals the “legs”. The more wine sticks to the side of a glass, the higher the alcohol content.
The Role of the Sense of Smell During Wine Tasting
As mentioned earlier, many of the subtle “tastes” of wine are actually perceived by your sense of smell. While there are only four perceptible tastes, there are thousands of different scents. Revealingly, sinus congestion will stop even the most experienced and accomplished wine taster in his/her tracks. Smell is perceived through the upper nose as well as through the back of the throat. Molecules of different scents are registered by the olfactory bulb in the sinuses. Before smelling a wine, swirl the glass again to reveal the aroma. When smelling a wine, attempt to put any familiar aromas into the context of previous tastings. This is the fundamental basis for increasing your knowledge of tasting wine. After smelling the wine, the majority of registered perceptions occur very quickly. Sense of smell is very delicate and easily overwhelmed. Smelling the same thing repeatedly becomes less and less revelatory in rapid succession. If you do not immediately pick out the array of aromas in a wine, relax for a minute or two, then try again.

Mankind’s ancient enjoyment of wine is largely derived from the fact that our senses, feelings, and preferences are the basic components of what makes us human.
The Actual Tasting Begins
After experiencing the aroma of a wine, it is logically time to taste. Swirl the wine once more, and then swallow a small sip. After your initial impression, take a slightly larger sip and make an effort to coat your entire mouth. This is called, “chewing” the wine. Before swallowing, aerate the wine in your mouth. While this makes a slightly strange sound, the enhanced flavors and aromas that are released are more than worth it. Another important component in the tasting process is touch, or how the wine feels in your mouth. Major variables to be aware of are the body of the wine, serving temperature, and astringency. The body of a wine includes the depth of flavor and alcohol content. If these components are underrepresented, a wine will taste diluted. Serving temperature is an important variable that mainly hinges on the varietal(s) that compose a particular wine. A crisp Sauvignon Blanc will taste flat at room temperature, and should be chilled. When you walk into Mangia you are greeted with the homemade desserts so you will want to save room for them because you will spend most of your meal thinking about them. X-MEN have all but vanished, and their feats of heroism are relegated to the pages of comic books. Logan attempts to keep Professor X’s whereabouts a closely guarded secret, forcefeeding the mutant finder with medications in attempt to keep his devastating seizures at bay. Xavier’s appearance and demeanor is a far cry from the confident, powerful, and brilliant man we have seen in the past. He is now broken, living a shattered life in the shadows, a virtual prisoner in his own mind and body. The plot of LOGAN finds LOGAN has been billed as the Wolverine and Professor X tryfinal Wolverine film starring ing to protect a young mutant Hugh Jackman. named Laura (Dafne Keen.) Her existence is an anomaly, as most mutants have disappeared from public view. She longs to reach a safe haven where she will be able to live her life in peace, without the fear of being captured or killed. Hot on her heels is the smarmy Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) who longs to capture the girl and eradicate any trace that she ever existed. Though Xavier is eager to help the child, Logan is not. He does not see it as his battle to fight, and is only concerned with his own survival. As transcendent and revolutionary that DEADPOOL proved to be, LOGAN stands as a stunning departure from the formulaic normalcy of traditional superhero films. This, in its own right, took a lot of guts and gumption. The X-Men brand, and Wolverine in particular, had already proved remarkably profitable and popular. To allow the character, and

Jackman for that matter, to go out on his own terms was a complete sidestep from convention, and could have proved disastrous. Ultimately, however, it proved to be a film that has massive cross-over appeal, and had far more heart and soul than most could have predicted. While I find it very hard to believe that we have seen the last of Wolverine, this may very well be the swan song for Jackman. It seems fitting that his last ride would be the best, and he certainly makes it difficult for anyone to fill his iconic shoes. As far as the future of the genre itself, the saturated market suddenly got a lot more interesting, and I’m certain that there are many tantalizing avenues that have yet to be explored. A special thanks goes to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA for allowing me to attend this month’s film.

Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY
Scantastic We doctors love our metrics. I can measure your weight, height, cholesterol level, blood type, BMI, etc. I can easily check your sugar, your insulin level, your liver function tests and your thyroid to name just a few factoids. I recently have offered all my patients a measurement of their memory using the Cognivue machine and a measure of their fitness with a 6 minute fit test. Until recently I had no way of really assessing your nutritional status. Until now. Finally there is a way to assess a patient’s nutritional status. There is a scanner used by Pharmanex which was developed by the University of Utah and it can measure specific antioxidant by passing a beam of light through your palm—no x-rays, no needles, no dyes and nothing invasive. In 30 seconds you get an antioxidant score. A very reliable and reproducible score. Pharmanex is one of the biggest companies investigating and marketing supplements. They have more scientists on their payroll than any other company making nutritional supplements. The reliability and accuracy of the scanner has been proven by multiple independent tests and is well grounded in basic science. So, finally, we have a way to individually assess your nutritional status … at least as in regards to antioxidants. Antioxidants are chemicals that reverse and/or prevent damage caused in your body by free radicals. Free radicals are generated due to stress In the body either from smoking, diabetes, recurrent trauma, etc. Antioxidants are thought to limit the damage caused by free radicals and therefore act as an antiaging, anticancer, and anti-heart disease compound. The damage caused by oxidation in the benefit of antioxidants has been shown in mice and rats and then many many laboratory studies but it has been difficult to prove in humans primarily due to the type of testing that has to be done to prove it. So far the best evidence regarding the benefits of antioxidants comes from the ophthalmologic world. It has been shown in not 1 but 2 large trials that antioxidants given to people that have early macular degeneration slows down the progression of the disease. Since macular

degeneration Is the #1 cause of blindness in America, anything that we can use to slow the process is a winner. Ophthalmologists have been prescribing antioxidants for years. What has always made me reluctant in the past regarding antioxidants or any vitamin/supplement for that matter is you don’t know what’s in the bottle. Yes, it says on the label quite clearly “the contents of this package have not been been proven to prevent, treat, or diagnose any disease.” Because of current law the supplement industry is essentially unregulated. The government can only intercede when the contents of some supplement have proven to be harmful otherwise it’s the wild wild west. Dr. Tod Cooperman, president of ConsumerLab.com, (a company that has tested over 2,000 dietary supplements made by more than 300 manufacturers) has found that one in four have quality problems. If you look at the American Cancer Society website you will find more evidence. “In 2013 researchers in Toronto published a report in which they sampled and analyzed 44 herbal supplements. The supplements were sold in both the US and Canada, and labeled as containing single herbs. Using DNA barcoding analysis, less than half the supplements (48%) contained any of the herb listed on the label. More than half of the supplements contained something that wasn’t on the continued on pg 20

My Mind To Yours

Health Care by Gaslight In 2006, retired NY Times reporter David Rosenbaum lay unattended in a Washington D.C. hospital after being found unconscious in the street, smelling of vomit. The first responders who found him and the hospital staff who admitted him thought Mr. Rosenbaum was inebriated when in fact Mr. Rosenbaum had been smashed in the head with a pipe while being robbed. Unable to advocate for himself, Mr. Rosenbaum was viewed through lenses where value judgements about personal behavior delayed his care. I first read about David Rosenbaum in Clark Elliot’s memoir, “Ghost in My Brain: How a Concussion Stole My Life and How Scientists believe 20% of our the New Science of Brain Plasticcalories power our brains. ity Helped Me Get It Back.” Our

Despite how robust we feel right now, we are all potential medical patients and not eternally indomitable healthcare consumers.
minds emerge from our bodies. We are one. Scientists believe 20% of our calories power our brains. Our brains filter information from the physical senses signaling us through our nervous systems to, ideally, do the next right thing. It’s impossible to focus on the present and simultaneously analyze everything about everything. As independent as we like to be, we rely on experts to guide us. And, despite how robust we feel right now, we are all potential medical patients and not eternally indomitable healthcare consumers. The internet and the public library can provide valuable information about both illness and health. Physicians often suggest patients research medical conditions on their own, and increasingly, health care practitioners are asking patients to provide medical histories online prior to appointments. Our elected representatives communicate via email newsletters and tweets so it seems odd that any Representative would, as did Utah Republican Jason Chaffetz, chide Americans for spending money on “that new iPhone” rather than investing “in their own health care.” Prior to the 2013 rollout of the “Obamacare” exchange, one month’s premium for an individual healthcare plan in NYS cost $1200. The initial monthly premiums for a NYS ACA Platinum plan sliced individual policy costs by nearly half. Premiums and iPhone costs have risen since 2013. House Speaker Paul Ryan says freedom is “the ability to buy what you want to fit what you need.” Vice President Mike Pence wants to bring “freedom and individual DAVID J. GRUENEWALD responsibility back to American health care.” I wonder about that BANKRUPTCY ATTORNEY “responsibility” part. stance. Personal health, including mental health, grows amid environment, ideology and power differentials. From ancient times, medical and social models have reflected stereotypes. The poor were once considered more capable of bearing pain. A guest on NPR’s “Freakonomics” stated that Ambien, tested on men, takes hours longer to clear from women’s bodies. (I know women who absolutely dismiss the drugging and rape accusations against Bill Cosby because they like Dr. Huxtable. Media consumers might all be apprentices at understanding how we perceive and remember.) Books provide needed context. Local history suggests that the immigrant laborers who dug the Erie Canal received whiskey for wages, as did workers on infrastructure projects in the City of New York, including Bellevue Hospital. Bellevue, perhaps best-known for its mental ward thanks to NYC based crime shows, is the oldest public hospital in the United States. In a time before health insurance or Medicaid, Bellevue treated all who entered, including those who, during modern epidemics, found themselves turned away by other facilities. After Hurricane Sandy, Bellevue, a public good, found itself fighting for FEMA dollars that private facilities seemed to more easily access. For anyone tired of tweets and memes, interested in health care, and, up for an epic, non-fiction page-turner that speaks to many of the major public and personal issues being faced by New York State residents today, I recommend David Oshinsky’s “Bellevue: Three Centuries of Medicine and Mayhem at American’s Most Storied Hospital.” “Bellevue” tells the story of personal and collective health within the wider context of a republic developing amid religious sectarianism, massive immigration, limited knowledge, and one big fight for freedom. The book takes side trips outside Bellevue’s walls to describe the discovery of germs, early manifestations of environmental concern, the emergence of

professional nursing, and 9/11. “Bellevue” describes the treatments and deaths of a few presidents, one of whom chose when to stop his medical care. The book touches on ever-present differences between how European nations and the U.S. provide for health and describes how our current insurance systems came to be. The book entertains. Even among the samples that contained the herb on the label, many also contained fillers or contaminants.” In our own state of New York the Attorney General has had to sue Walgreens, Target and CVS amongst others because the products, when tested, did not contain any active ingredients 4 times out of 5. So besides the problem of contamination the possibility that when you buy a supplement bottle that it actually doesn’t contain anything like what it says on the label. Consumer Reports has evaluated this as well and came to the similar conclusion that all too commonly the label doesn’t match the ingredients. These are serious charges have been confirmed by multiple investigators. What’s the average consumer to do? We know that even buying a random name from a major retailer does not protect you from the possibility of contamination and/or inadequate contents. In the past you had to just trust to Faith, Now you can actually put your supplements to the test. You can have a good antioxidant score either by having an excellent diet with plenty of nuts, fruits and vegetables or by taking a supplement. Is your supplement working? Are you getting your monies worth? In the past we have had absolutely no way of knowing this. Since, up until now, we haven’t had any good way of knowing whether you supplement is worthwhile I have been reluctant to recommend them. If you know me you know I’m also reluctant to recommend a lot of prescription drugs but for different reasons. Now, however, we have an inexpensive and reproducible way to measure your antioxidant/nutritional status and also compare different supplements. Unfortunately your doctor is unlikely to get a scanner because it’s not covered by insurance and if it’s not covered by insurance most doctors want nothing to do with it. We have become so reliant on the insurance dollar that most physicians just don’t even think of new procedures and tests unless they are going to be reimbursed by the major insurance companies. How sad is that! There is, I understand, a doctor on the East side of town who has a scanner but it’s reserved only for his ALWAYS FRESH! patients. We Love Our Friends! I am so excited that ALWAYS We Feed Them we finally have a way Tasty Food! DELICIOUS! of measuring your nutritional status and a way of evaluating your supplements that I have purchased a scanner

I hear ads for Texas Superfoods on the radio all the time. Vine ripened this and that … well it may have ripened on the vine but is there any nutrient value in the capsule? Finally we can independently and cheaply put all these claims to the test by using your own body as proof of what you are absorbing. Dr. Oz took the scan on his show and scored very well with diet alone. How many fruits and veggies a day are you really eating? Does your vitamin or supplement have any antioxidant benefit at all? Go ahead and get scanned and find out for yourself. Once you get a score you can decide on how to improve it and if you take a supplement you can get rescanned to make sure you are getting your monies worth. This is real progress in an area which we have had no real benchmarks and since your diet and activities are the bedrock of your health, having a way to actually measure this crucial information is great news! Phoenix Sports Restaurant As I walked into the Phoenix Sports Restaurant, I was instantly greeted by a lovely young lady asking if she could help me. I was struck by the immediate greeting that accompanied the beautiful smile. She then introduced me to Mike Lattimore Jr., owner and chef at the restaurant. Megan, the girl who greeted me, then made sure to greet each customer and made thanked them as they left whether, or not, she waited on them. While sitting with Mike and learning how he and his Dad, Mike Lattimore Sr., started the restaurant six years ago, a little girl came up. It was Mike’s 3 year old daughter. He then pointed to his other daughter who was 10 sitting at the counter enjoying some pizza. Mike instantly said, “I’m comfortable bringing the girls here because we are very family oriented. They wait for my wife to finish her shift, and have fun while waiting.” When I asked about what their primary focus was, both Mike and his Dad stated that it’s all about family. And not just their family, but every family in the community. “We’ve created an atmosphere where anyone, any family will feel welcomed and comfortable,” said Mike Sr. When they took the facility over, it was a shell with vending machines. Father and Son Lattimore saw potential, but knew it would take some work. “We feature tracks across the country and some from Canada. we also show all the other sporting events as well,” said Mike. “And,” piped in Sr. “we’ll even play Sponge Bob for the kids. We do whatever we need to do to entertain everyone.” Again, they showed their commitment of excellence to their customers. I then asked what the biggest challenge was since taking over. Mike Sr. replied, “Well, the toughest part was making sure everyone knew what we were doing with the place. This meant asking patrons to not use expletive language when their horse didn’t come in.” However, Mike Jr. said the customers complied gladly once they realized there would be children in the restaurant. And for those who forget, Mike Sr. gently reminds them that this is a family business that welcomes families. One of the most unique features offered is a smoking room with stateof-the-art ventilation. Although I’m a non-smoker, I have always felt badly that people had to go outside in bad weather. “This facility has to be approved by both the state and federal government and costs $200,000 to install. Luckily, it was here when we took over” stated Mike Sr. I’m a severe asthmatic and I had no idea there was a designated smoking area because the air quality was pristine when I walked in the door. Had they not told me, I would never have known the smoking room was there. The Lattimore’s are totally committed to their community as well. “We’ll do a fundraiser for anyone,” said Mike Jr. “We live here and that keeps us in touch with the needs of the village and the town, and we’ll do whatever we can to help.” They showed me a fundraiser advertisement that ended last month – a $5.00 ticket gave you a chance to win a trip to Yankee stadium. The trip included airfare and accommodations to the game that features Derek Jeter’s jersey retirement! That’s what makes this place special because they know they won’t make any money on 10 Minutes From The Casino this kind of event, but that doesn’t really matter – it’s what’s best for the community. The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS
The Redneck Manifesto You must have been sleeping if you missed all the talk about J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy, published mid-2016 to rave reviews, though the story itself is somewhat sad. As the name implies, the book deals with the loss of the Appalachian culture, values, and a small town “hillbilly’s” memories of life as he knew it. Jim Goad’s Redneck Manifesto: How Hillbillies, Hicks, & White Trash Became America’s Scapegoats is, just like the title, utterly the opposite end of the spectrum, yet curiously, about the same subject. So imagine a lost love song with soaring strings and a flute as compared to Goth rock. And there you have it. Goad is a hyper-masculine writer on speed. He writes long —but coherent— sentences full of challenge, anger, velocity and vicious humor. But for all that, he is astoundingly insightful and thoughtful. While he “identifies” (I swore I would never use that verb in quite that sense!) as a Redneck, his actual roots were originally in small town New England. His definition of “Redneck” has more to do with class than locale; and while he does acknowledge that most Rednecks are also southerners, his definition of a Redneck is based on life experience, tastes, attitudes and status. His theory: Rednecks are pretty close to the bottom of the pile, at least as far as The Elites are concerned. Goad is feisty. Perhaps “feisty” doesn’t go far enough: combative might do his personality more justice. He was in jail. He’s worked for porn magazines. He’s written several books, and managed literary websites. He likes women, alcohol, and fast living. And he has a chip on his shoulder the size of a (pun deliberate) Redwood about the place allocated to the Rednecks in the big scheme of things. Rednecks, he explains, is a term assigned to people who once tilled the soil — worked in the sun— and their exposed fair skin, often the neck, turned red. Eventually, it became a pejorative for anyone who was poorly educated, simple socially, and who worked with his hands. But simply making fun of “hillbillies,” as in “The Beverly Hillbillies,” or “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” by laughing at “the cee-ment pond,” or a fascination with bare chests and race cars is one thing; heaping scorn, ridicule and blame on a group of people simply for being who they are is another. The Big Secret Problem in America, according to Goad’s manifesto isn’t racism. It isn’t illegal immigration, taxes, or the 1%. It’s classism. And the victims are the rural poor, the trailer trash, the men and women who lack education and jobs, who are fair game for mockery and “slurs,” and for whom there is little defense. Many of them are the descendants of the poorest of the poor from Scotland and Ireland, who were evicted from their highland homes, and who made their way to a

They hunted and fished, farmed, and most notoriously, brewed corn liquor, or “moonshine.” But they might also have been poor New England farmers or laborers, fishermen, factory or mine workers. What they had, and have, are two common defining characteristics: they’re poor, and they’re white. Because, at least to a certain degree, Goad’s thesis is that, needing to find someone to blame for the ills of slavery and subsequent Jim Crow, to have an enemy for modern elitism, to have a board for the darts of discontent, we’ve chosen the poor white. Say the “n-word,” and you’ll be shunned from polite society, possibly forever. Say “cracker,” and everyone knows you’re simply jocularly referring to the imbeciles who still attend church and vote “that way.” Parade around with a “vee-jay” disguise on at a protest and you’re brave and funny; carry a hunting rifle in a rack on your pickup and you’re admitting to the world that you can’t count to 10 and haven’t washed in six months. Sing and dance mostly naked and grabbing your woman-or-man parts and it’s hip, sexy and edgy. Live in a trailer out in the woods and you’re probably married to your sister. Did any of that offend you? Good. The foregoing is written in Goad’s, er, goading style – to give you a sense of what you’d be in for if you read this book. And you really should, no matter what your ethnicity or political persuasions. It’s provoking, certainly. It’s meant to be. And Goad is no saint or sweetheart – by his own admission (or perhaps embellishment), he’s left more women at the side of the road than jobs he’s held, and that’s more than somewhat. He’s rude, vulgar, angry, and his writing is self-indulgently manic, though I will admit to being a little jealous of his ability to string words together in reckless rants that rage on and on and on and yet —astoundingly— make sense. Goad manages to combine scholarly research and gutter language; wisdom and insight with crass perversity; and honest admission that “fair” and “equal” never were nor are ever likely to be realized with a messianic zeal for righting the wrongs of an unfair and unequal social order. The payoff of the book is simple: the lower classes, the browns and the whites and the yellows and the reds, are not natural enemies. It’s the classes that are at war -one bred of manipulation. And there’s nothing inherently better or worse about you because you live in an inner city project, a barrio, or a cabin in the deep woods -or for that matter, 7 a Manhattan penthouse or Malibu beach house. Agree or disagree with him, you won’t put the book down with indifference.

Of all the films that were released in 2016, I don’t know if there was another that I felt boasted more promise than PASSENGERS. The sci-fi thriller was lead by two of the most charming and likable stars that Hollywood had to offer, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. The effects presented in the trailer appeared to be outstanding, and the minimalist cast seemed to be the perfect opportunity to allow the talents of its leads to shine. For a while, PASSENGERS was every bit the movie that I had hoped it would be. Pratt plays Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer who is on his way to an Earth-like colony located millions of miles from our home planet. The journey was to take 120 years, but when an asteroid damages

Denim has been and always will be a strong spring staple, though it can start to feel stale. Add pins to a denim jacket to add personality to an otherwise innocuous ensemble. Add patches to those jeans that have started to rip. Pick a pair of overalls and dress them up with a blouse and a statement necklace. Trade your boot cut jeans for a boyfriend cut. Spring is the time for something unexpected.
Add some hints of sparkle to your ensemble by trading your normal eyeliner for a shimmery neutral shade. A swipe of gold or brown shimmer will accentuate your eyes and add your ensemble overall. Also adding a dash of highlighter back into your beauty routine will add glow to your face. Just because you may need your outfit to be more practical, does not mean you have to keep your beauty routine the same.
Pick a pattern:
All in the details:
Floral print is everywhere in the spring, particularly around Easter. If you are looking for something fresh, try a geometric print, brightly colored stripes, or a quirky ladybug detailing. Subtly branch out by choosing an item in a cut that makes you comfortable, but a pattern that has a strong pop. On warmer days a statement skirt can make a splash, but on cooler days, a printed top under a bright coat can be just as eye-catching.
Though hair accessories are easy to forget, adding something small can add extra to a simple outfit. A gold stranded headband can dress up something as simple as jeans and a collared shirt. A simple button down or blouse can easily be spruced up by the addition of a Gold bobby pins with bow. Do We Really Need Sugar? Like it or lump it, there are very few of us who get through the day without adding sugar to our diet. We are drawn to the taste of sweetness like bears to honey. Refined sugar is toxic for the human body. It is responsible for obesity and diabetes, as well as many other health related disorders. It is eight times more addictive than cocaine and yet it’s one of the most consumed substances on earth. Since sugar contains no beneficial nutrients, it is not necessary to eat any at all, and yet the typical American continues to consume between one hundred and twenty to one hundred and fifty pounds each year. The problem with refined sugar, the type you use in baking, add to your coffee or tea and find in sweets like candy, is its fast rate of metabolism, lack of healthy nutrients and inability to make you feel full. Sugar comes from sugar cane, yet extreme refinement has eliminated all of the fiber and plant nutrients. Refined sugar is quickly broken down into glucose and fructose. The increase in glucose spikes insulin and blood sugar levels, giving you a quick surge of energy. If you do not use this energy immediately, your body turns it into fat. Fructose is metabolized in your liver and is absorbed at once, increasing fat cell production and workload on your liver. The quick digestion of refined sugar prevents fullness even after you eat a calorie-rich dessert, leaving you hungry.

Are you addicted to sugar? • Do you struggle to walk past a sugary treat without taking just one? • Do you have routines around sugar consumption, for example, always having ice cream, or needing a piece of chocolate to relax in front of the television? • Are there times when you feel as if you cannot go on without a hit of something sweet?

• If you go without sugar for 24 hours, do you develop headaches, fatigue and mood swings? • If you answered YES to one of the questions above, you may be addicted. There is no doubt that sweets are tempting! The good news is you can learn to overcome your sugar cravings. Here are a few tips to help get you on your way.

Swap sugary beverages for natural, no-added sugar beverages such as herbal teas, carbonated water or regular water. Add flavor and texture with a slice of fresh fruit, frozen berries, a lemon wedge or sliced cucumbers.
Limit Desserts
The first and perhaps most obvious step in eliminating refined sugars is to skip dessert. Ice cream, cake, cookies, brownies and pastries are loaded with refined sugar and not much else in terms of nutrition. When that postdinner sweet craving hits, reach for a piece of fruit. Fruit and refined sugar have very different effects in the body. Besides being rich in antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals, fruit contains natural sugars and are an excellent source of fiber. Fiber in fruit expands in your gut, making you feel full and prevents the sugars from being rapidly broken down and stored.
Identify Sugar Stressors
Most sugar cravings aren’t the result of actual physical hunger. More often than not they are motivated by emotions such as anger, stress, boredom and sadness. When we lose control, it is human nature to eat our emotions. When you can identify your sugar stressors you will gain a new found sense of self-control. This will help you fight future cravings.

Now that you’ve got a handle on why you are eating an excessive amount of refined sugar, finding healthier coping mechanisms to handle your emotions will stop you from diving into that pint of ice cream when you’ve had a stressful day. Instead of eating, grab your gym bag and head to the gym, schedule a massage, take a walk with a friend, read a book or listen to your favorite music.
Out Of Sight Out Of Mind
If you can’t have a cookie without wanting to eat the whole bag, don’t buy them! Keeping tempting sweets in your home will make it too easy to binge at your weakest moments. If you’re having the urge to eat something sweet, have natural sugar alternatives handy. This will prevent you from consuming empty calories with no nutritional value. Stock up on fresh fruit, fresh veggies, dried fruit, nuts, and natural treats like real honey and maple syrup.
Swap Sugary Beverages
Sugary beverages such as soda, sweetened tea, lemonade, juice mixes and even fruit juice all contribute to our daily sugar intake. Swap them for natural, no-added sugar beverages such as herbal teas, carbonated water or regular water. Add flavor and texture with a slice of fresh fruit, frozen berries, a lemon wedge or sliced cucumbers. continued on pg 32

Eat Balanced Meals
If you find yourself standing in front of the vending machine on your breaks, try eating three balanced meals. A healthy, balanced meal contains one part complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains), one healthy fat (vegetable oils, nuts, dairy, or fish high in omega-3 fats), and one lean protein (chicken, turkey, fish or lean beef ). Keeping yourself satiated with healthy food will keep your insulin levels from spiking, which is what causes sugar and carb cravings.
Read Labels Closely
More than two-thirds of the refined sugar used in the United States is added to processed foods. While some labels will simply list sugar in the ingredient list, it is not always that straight forward. Passengers continued from pg 26
lessly attempts to pry his way into the ship’s bridge. Unfortunately, no method of entry, no matter how drastic or violent, is successful. Without a pass code, there is no way to the access the quarters. After a year of isolation with only a robotic bartender (Michael Sheen) to keep him company, Jim’s soul crushing loneliness overtakes him. He is on the verge of committing suicide when he sees fellow passenger Aurora Lane (Lawrence) sleeping in her pod. Jim begins to watch entries that she has created on a video profile, and although she is unconsious, he soon falls in love. Her exubrerent personality, penchant for humor, and zest for life is infectious, and he begins to wrestle with the morality of altering her pod in an attempt to wake her up early. Consumed by the thought of spending the rest of his life alone in the far reaches of space, he ultimately decides to terminate her slumber. The first two acts of PASSENGERS are fantastic. Pratt commands the screen in his extensive solo existence, providing plenty of laughs and entertainment. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Production design, and this honor was fully deserved. The vast expanse of the ship provides endless opportunities for top-notch visual delights, and director Morten Tyldum’s vision allows the ship itself to become a character in its own right. Once Aurora awakens, the dynamic between the two leads is every bit as cohesive as the audience could hope. They are both intellegent, personable, and attractive, and their courtship exudes an air of genuineness. Although Aurora believes that her sleeping pod malfunctioned just as Jim’s had, the audience’s knowledge of this unforgivable deception provides an engaging undercurrent of drama and suspense. Serving as a sad metaphor for film itself, PASSENGERS begins to fall apart as the ship begins to do the same. The asteroid that caused Jim to awaken starts to cause further catastrophic damage to the vessel, and it becomes apparent that the craft will soon to lose all functionality, resulting in the deaths of everyone on board. Luckily, these damages result in Chief Deck Officer Gus’ (Laurence Fishburne) awakening, and he enlists Jim and Aurora with the seemingly

impossible task of repairing the ship. Luckily, and comically conveniently, Jim’s background in mechanical engineering provides the glimmer of hope needed for the ship’s salvation. As entertaining as PASSENGERS had been up until this point, the absurdity of its final act completely overshadows all of the endearing moments that had proceeded it. Dissolving in a muddled-mess of sci-fi and action movie cliches, it skyrockets towards a realm of absurdity and dissolves into a multitude of unintended laughs. Scenes that are meant to be suspenseful and intense induce far more eye-rolls than chills, and even the likability of its leads can’t save PASSENGERS from a hollow and lifeless conclusion.

Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN
The Price of a Failed Press Of all our Constitutional protections, it is Free Press that should be the most sacred. Free Press stands alone as the single agent of change that has the power to restore our course. The problem is just about everyone understands this except them. The mercilessly insensitive demands of the corporate environment have removed the needed value system that protected their purpose and their honor. Where does one begin? There is no sense whatever of priority, inappropriate distortion, reckless delivery of poorly sourced information, focus, and direction. There is an absolute misunderstanding of their mission to influence matters that endanger America and mankind itself. The quality and the values urgent to a successful America have been siphoned from their enormous power. Algorithms designed around propaganda and greed, and greed apart from algorithms, play the major rolls in how news is prioritized and delivered. Corporations study algorithms and target news, altered and falsified, in keeping with bringing readers to thinking that suits their agenda. This is propaganda. Ratings that dismiss priority also design news. This is pure greed. Media misdirection is massive with “priority” standards among their most gleaming faults. Few things disgust me more than when I hear a barrage of media blame toward Trump for refocusing the news from critical matters with more trivial activity. Then they magnify the essence of minor stories thus diluting the value of intense reporting on more urgent matters. Remember when “Breaking News” meant something?

Of all our Constitutional protections, it is Free Press that should be the most sacred. Free Press stands alone as the single agent of change that has the power to restore our course. The problem is just about everyone understands this except them. I have an idea. Don’t refocus. I cringe when an anchor blames a tweet for bumping a serious issue from a headline. They can simply opt to choose what is truly important. News should not be selected via a corporate profit sensitive algorithm that has no guide for right or wrong or good or bad. These people have allowed the ruin of America by sacrificing the influential integrity necessary to inform in ways that deliver information prioritized to serve the people and the Constitution. They failed their purpose and in this highly neglected and evolved nuclear, environmental and economic (all fraught with massive difficulty) era it may well be too late. The ultimate and decisive Media failure was “to not” identify, prioritize, headline and define the single horror that reduced us to today. If asked few would know that this is the Mustard Seed. That our entire peril is rooted in this. Public well-being has been sucked away from issue to issue, from stem to stern by this despicable and glaring human weakness. This pure evil that sucks the quality and compassion out of humans is Campaign Finance designed around Favor for Favor. Our entire digression on every front followed the money to the top. Please note that in the following it is Media, Government and Corporate favor for favor that corrupted all the details of these systems. The media alone had the ability to expose and steady the course. They did not. Simply writing things that define such horror seems so feeble. Yet here they are: To name a few, they have failed nuclear and chemical weapons, truths and dangers, environmental decimation, truths and dangers, species decimation, truths and dangers, climate change, truth and dangers, off shore accounts and tax havens of the Fortune 400 who own more than two thirds of America, truths and dangers, American opportunity and income decimation to date, truths and dangers, the near future human cost of job killing robotic technology, truths and dangers (that may well be the final nail in the coffin of domestic tranquility) and basically truth and appropriate focus and consistency on everything that really matters. All of these are in an eminent disaster phase. None would be if Favor for Favor was not the guide. And accordingly nothing else but correcting favor for favor “Quid Pro Quo” will fix our problems. Right and wrong as seen by the patriotism of the finest that we can be would restore our beacon as humanities greatest hope. But too few are on this. The media is useless. It far more likely that rather than adopt wisdom, that in the near future one or more of the listed disasters will peak and explode. The nearness between any of these becoming todays reality is disguised in Man’s inability to comprehend severe danger that is on his doorstep. The distance between words and real near danger happening is nearly closed. Facts, realities and probability are grave. We live along-aside many dangerous precipices. We pay little attention to lurking major disaster. We wake up on the day of our Pearl Harbors and 9-11’s. Far too late. Without the media we are dozing in lackadaisical false reality. In the meantime Soap Opera news wins every time. Even as Kim Jong-un is testing for a massive nuclear future and firing missiles into the Sea of Japan and learning how to be Chinas nuclear and chemical proxy warmonger (which is why China allows their pursuits) the Celebrity Apprentice gets more coverage. China is designing strategies to win a Nuclear War. Research. They study this and prepare. It is not unthinkable to them. Their value

system is not like ours. Quid pro quo, favor for favor induced corporate manipulation in keeping with Political agenda stands at the forefront of all that is wrong. Everyone should know what this is and the cost. It is the epicenter, the very heartbeat that poisons human course. This past election is so clear an example. Like Trump or not he was delivered by the media. Minutes on TV cost millions for a reason. Simply because Trump was good for ratings we were saturated with all things Trump. Follow the money. (ratings) Even if it means altering an election. Today as the media relentlessly chases around Russians, and Obama spying, (neither of which is based on fact) the vital issues I mentioned are sidelined. Maybe they should look in the mirror where fact and truth and the worst blame for our woes can be found. It is to them to know what danger and propaganda is, to raise alternatives in view of such an evil spectre, to inform with truth in keeping with action needed to fix our land. And they fail and fail. They do not even try. And they are our only hope as only respected truth that causes right deed will be respected by our people. Greed did all of this. Greed caused Quid Pro Quo. Greed fertilized the poisonous thinking of our leaders. They took money and sold regulation without regard for land, sea, air or quality of life. The result: America’s 20 wealthiest people —a group that could fit comfortably in one single Gulfstream G650 luxury jet— now own more wealth than the bottom half of the American population combined, a total of 152 million people. The 100 richest households own more assets than the entire AfricanAmerican community. With a combined worth of $2.34 trillion, the Forbes 400 own more wealth than the bottom 61 percent of the country combined, a staggering 194 million people. Yes, 400 people own two thirds of America. They are not the despicable. It is the Government that sold them their souls and the media that watched, yes those two entities responsible to us, failed us on front after front. For money. Today, wealthy individuals are moving quickly to shift even more wealth into offshore tax havens and bury it in private trusts, avoiding accountability and taxation every step of the way. This hidden wealth now totals in the trillions. Our first step must be to close these escape routes and tax dodges. What a media and American sin that a man and women slave hourly, blood and sweat, for minimum wage to support a family, and these 400 people, with estates all over the world hide the bounty of that sweat and blood to avoid any enrichment of that man and women. And the depth of meaning and cause of this will get no further than this column. Our course is pretty much ordained as is the result of an avalanche when it is underway. These fools that do not recognize what caused the Trump phenomena will see it with glaring clarity as they continue their blind pursuit toward a robotic workplace. When Americans have finally had enough. How this will translate in the Global arena remains to be seen. The robotic and technological revolution that is underway is international. How do you stabilize when economies evolve too far away from the survival and happiness of the people? The rich have seen to it that oversight and regulation is viewed as intrusion. This gave them free reign to do as they pleased. Removing the hideous complex impediments and ordering the rich to return their money from off shore would be a great start. We are really desperate for crisis think tanks on each vital issue with the authority to implement findings. We are now victims of the power of neglected and highly advanced momentum. If we do not redesign our approach in matters of human equality and well-being the future of humankind will be fraught with upheaval. No fail safes. Just ongoing neglect of realities with no heroes, no fighters, no patriotism, no majesty to save us. We are just tumbling to the News should not be selected via a bottom of the Mountain. Still I search corporate profit sensitive algorithm for America, with the heart of a sleepthat has no guide for right or wrong ing Phoenix to find a way to restore. or good or bad. Hope should have an avenue.
