The Incredibles 2 It’s unfathomable to think that it has been 14 years since the release of THE INCREDIBLES. At the time, the genre-bending, superhero story was as an unrivaled revelation. Writer/Director Brad Bird, along with Pixar Studios, proved to the world that family fare, and animated films as a whole, didn’t have to be relegated to children and the unfortunate parents who may have had to tag along. With dazzling animation, a lively story, great characters, plenty of action, and a ton of humor, it was beloved by children and adults alike. It is the rare movie that holds up under repeated viewings, a fact that I can testify to directly. My kids, ages 9 and 6, watch it a few times a month. From the moment it was initially released, fans across the globe hoped that a sequel would be just around the corner. After nearly a decade-and-a-half of speculation and rumors, the Parr family burst back onto the big screen this June. Though there have been some who have proclaimed that THE INCREDIBLES 2 was a step back rather than a leap forward, I couldn’t disagree more emphatically. The sheer amount of time that has passed since the original came out has resulted in a reverence that, whether fair or not, is impossible to approach. There is no denying that THE INCREDIBLES was a groundbreaking adventure that opened the door for Pixar, and all other animation studios, to become much more daring and confident. The film illustrated that risks could (and should) be taken to test the limits of conventionalism.
The belief that the sequel needs to do the same is a fallacy. The most important factor in the success of the sequel is its entertainment value. Will fans of the original fall in love with the Parr family all over again, and will they have fun along the way? The answer here is a simple and categorical, “yes!” THE INCREDIBLES 2 picks up immediately where the first left off. And, by immediately, I mean, it literally is an extension of the final scene in the 2004 film. Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson,) Elastigirl (Holly Hunter,) and their kids are hot on the trail of the Underminer (Johan Ratzenberger, getting his obligatory and delightful cameo out of the way early) as he attempts to drill underneath the city in order to rob a bank. Carnage, both professional and personal, befalls the family along the way, and once again, the public and government alike question the legitimacy of superheroes. There are those who think that the world is far better without them, while others, including wealthy businessman Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk) and his sister Evelyn (Catherine Keener) attempt to help the heroes reclaim their rightful place atop the criminal justice system. Mr. Incredible’s brute force results in maximum carnage, the siblings decide that Elastigirl should serve as the face of the mission, and would serve as a catalyst for change. With a camera pinned to her suit that allows all of her heroic exploits to be broadcast to the world, Elastigirl pursues evildoers, including a villain named The Screenslaver who uses hypnosis and technology to control his unsuspecting victims. Meanwhile, Bob takes on the role of stay-at-home dad, and quickly learns what I’ve known for years (having seen the wonders my wife wields in our household on a daily basis); being a stay-at-home parent is far more difficult than virtually any other job you could imagine. Aiding Violet (Sarah Vowell) in her attempts to grow closer to her crush, Tony (Michael Bird) helping Dash (Huck Milner) with “new math” (a phenomenal and hilarious take on Common Core) and discovering the ever-evolving and surprisingly intense abilities of baby Jack-Jack proves to be much more difficult than battling bad guys. Bird’s film is exhilarating and endlessly entertaining. Like the first film, it contains the same crossover appeal that it makes it fun for any age. Allowing Elastigirl to take center stage was a great creative move, providing deeper character development for her (and, by extension, Hunter) than was on display the first time around. The family dynamic between the Parr’s is relatable and heartfelt, adding a level of emotionality that is often missing in animated films. At the end of the day, they are a loving, yet flawed, and ultimately a cohesive unit that proves that it is far better to work together than to try to tackle life on 1370 BURNET AVE., your own. The action sequences are abundant and awesome, and SYRACUSE, NY serve as yet another example of the ingenuity of Pixar. I’m fairly Exit 690 at Teall Ave. One Block to certain that in every single review I’ve ever written about a film Burnet, Turn Right One Block Up from the studio, I proclaim that I’m continuously awe-inspired by what they are able to do. Beautiful, eye-popping, and unbelievable, they find a way to shatter expectations, and take animation to visual heights that never seemed possible. A special thanks goes to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA for allowing me to attend this month’s film.

Many pork dishes in the summer are served smokey and sweet. Pork can also be quite savory and rich in conjunction with a higher fat content as well. Ribs can be slathered with barbeque sauce or simply dry rubbed with a spice mix. Pig roasts, especially in relation to whole pig roasts, are done slowly in order for the flavors to build and meld into something quite delicious. Bacon can be added to ANY of your summer dishes, including vegetables and summer pasta or potato salads, sausages lend their own encased spice mix, and pulled pork is simply a staple around these parts. Brews of choice: Smoked Porters, Tripels, Dunkelweizens, Marzens. The smoked porters impart an added layer of complexity and only build and layer with the flavors and richness of the pork itself. Other malty brews tend to dance cheek-tocheek with the flavors of the sauces and spices used.
Beef is notoriously rich in fatty goodness. (Haven’t you noticed that everything that your physician says to limit your intake of is always the BEST eats?!) A marbled ribeye is one of the best cuts of meat that can be simply seasoned with a little kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, thrown on the grill and ultimately savored with each bite. Brew to try: Smoke N’ Shadows Porter by Empire Brewing Company (Syracuse, NY) & Community Beer Works (Buffalo, NY), 6.2% ABV; this collaboration craft beer’s Munich and Vienna malts were smoked over 3 days using cherry-wood. So grab your growler – It can currently be found on tap, (& on nitro), and is sweet, smokey, with a slight bitterness. Overall, it is sublimely balanced. (Bonus: Pair this with Empire’s Spicy Pig Burger at either of their locations for a real kick-ass meal pairing!)
Chicken – BBQ, Jerk, Wings, Marinated
Chicken, as a whole, is a milder meat. If pairing with barbequed chicken, pairing a brew with the sauce you use is going to offer the best and most complementary pairing. Jerk chicken and wings are going to offer up a spicy heat to pair with. Marinated chicken normally has a different spectrum of flavors that include bright herbs and spices with sometimes a bit of a citrusy zing thrown in as well. Brews of choice: Saisons, Goses, Farmhouse Ales, Helles Lagers – these will pair well alongside of your spicier sauces and jerk seasonings, keeping the heat in check while not overpowering the mildness of the meat itself. In addition, they’ll also enhance the delicate flavors present in marinades. Ambers, with their malts, compliment the barbeque sauces used in conjunction with the chicken meat. Brew to try: Citra Sour Soft Serve by Gun Hill Brewing Company (Bronx, NY), 3.6% ABV; this dry-hopped kettel sour is fairly complex —think about if you mixed a sour with an IPA with a cream ale— this is what you’d get. Sounds weird, but it’s not once you taste it. The smooth tartness and balance of all the different aspects makes this a prime selection to compliment all of your grilled chicken dishes. continued on pg 6

There are so many options when it comes to seafood in the summer from freshwater and the ocean. Grilling any and all of the above either on skewers, wood planks, beach fire bakes, eating them raw, or just popping them in a pot on your grill burner, lends a whole other level of experimentation to your summer barbecuing experience. Seafood and their delicate flavors should only be delicately enhanced by the brews we drink. Brews of choice: Pilsners, Helles Lagers, Witbiers, Hefeweizens, Sours. All of these brews tend to be on the lighter side and not overly hoppy. Some add a little citrusy acidity to your sweet meats. We finish many fish and seafood dishes off with a spritz of a slice of lemon, think of your accompanying beer as achieving the same result. Brew to try: Peach in the Glasses Wit by Artisanal Brew Works (Saratoga Springs, NY), 4.6% ABV, this witbier is light with very, very subtle peach notes, with the hazy flavoring of a classic wheat beer. A perfect pairing for gobbling up all the creatures of the sea.

Veggies & Veggie Burgers
Don’t worry vegetarians and vegans, I got you! It’s not always all about the meat! Grilling vegetables is one of the best ways to bring out different flavors within the veggies themselves. Corn, asparagus, zucchini, portobellos, peppers, onions, potatoes, the list goes on and on. You can lay them directly on the grill, wrap them in foil, or saute them in a grill pan. There are so many options, including the addition of seasonings. Veggie burgers are sometimes plain, sometimes spiced and much like an actual beef burger, can be dressed-up a variety of different ways. Veggies are versatile, but you’re going to want a beer that doesn’t overpower the mild earthiness of them. Brews of choice: Pilsners, Helles Lagers, Witbiers, Belgians, American Pale Ales, Hefeweizens. All of these compliment the mildness of the veggies. If you’re grilling stronger flavored veggies such as mushrooms and onions, or a veggie burger with all the fixins’, American Pale Ales are an even better accompaniment. Brew to try: Saranac Pale Ale by Saranac Brewing/ F.X. Matt Brewing Company (Utica, NY), 5.5% ABV; this classic American Pale Ale is a go-to for summer alone, but pairing it with your veggies, especially your stronger flavored ones, is even better. Malty, hoppy, and crisp with a balanced medium body. Now you’re completely, 100% ready for those backyard get-togethers! Lunch with Julie Briggs June is here. Summer is on and its a beautiful day in Syracuse. By now, the city is bustling with music – and music agendas achieve their full-swing of momentum. And on this beautiful sunny day in our cool city, I find myself across the table from Julie Binggs —one of Central NY’s foremost perpetuators of the music scene— for a bit of lunch and some chit-chat about the state of affairs in CNY music. We’ll start by saying that Julie is busy. Busy as a marketeer and busy with making music go. She’s decidedly positive about the quality of music in Syracuse. I can see that she’s been part of BluesFest, concerts that introduce new original talent, a tribute or two (we had a long talk about tribute shows … ) and of course club and event bookings. And, while I’ve chatted briefly with Julie online a time or two, seeing her at shows, we’ve never really had enough of a chat to say we know one another. So, we went to lunch to make friends and talk music. Chuck Schiele: While I do not know you as a musician, you strike me as quite a perpetuator of the scene. Please tell us, generally, about your place in the Syracuse music scene. Julie Briggs: Joanna Jewett and I are partners in Red Shoes Black Bag Productions, a company that specializes in musical events that benefit not-for-profit organizations. We produce 4-6 shows a year. I help my friend Stacey Waterman of DMR Booking with some of her projects, I have been involved in the planning committees for things like the NY State Blues Festival and the SAMMYS. And I have booked bands for local bar/restaurants.
The Listening Room at 443, which is a new venue with a similar vibe to the Listening Room Acoustic Music Series from 2014 I’m also in the planning stages of opening a new live music venue. I get a lot of joy out of creating cool events and making sure that everyone from the artists to the guests have a really positive experience. CS: Please share with us about some of the shows you throw. JB: Red Shoes Black Bag has a roster of events ranging from intimate listening room type shows to 600 people dancing their butts off at the Palace Theater. We tend to focus on female performers because we like creating opportunities for women and really shining a light on all the talent we have in CNY. Get up early enough to spend some time on the practice range hitting wedges to specific targets, chipping on the practice green and putting on the practice green. You should allocate at least an hour to this if your personal schedule permits. Have a friend, family member or playing partner look at all the aspects of your short game when you are playing your round and again while on the range. For example, during the round, you should have someone watch to see if your feet are in proper alignment with the flag stick, how far back you bring the club when hitting short iron or chip shots, what your eyes and head are doing when hitting chips and short irons and again, when putting whether long putts or short putts. While playing the round you should have someone make observations about your short game and these observations should be written down on a pad. For example, on putts, you may break your wrists, thereby pulling or pushing putts. A playing partner can easily see this kind of mistake and help you change your putting style, if not during the round, then on the practice green. Keep track of how many greens you hit in regulation, how many putts you take on each green, the approximate length of the first putt, whether your putts or your short iron shots or chips are always on one side of the hole, (i.e. always left or always right). If it is possible when you are practicing or during an actual round have one of your playing Syracuse Nationals! partners or a friend take cell phone pictures of your stance on chips, putts, short irons shots so you can actually see what you look like as opposed to what you think you look like. JB: I think the beauty of the “Syracuse sound” is its diversity. There was a point when we were probably best known as a blues town, but it’s not true anymore. We have bands gigging regularly playing everything from reggae to jazz to rock to country to blues and everything in between. CS: Who’s hot? JB: Me. … mid-life hot flashes are no joke. CS: A music scene is one-part music makers and one-part music appreciators. What have you learned or observed from Syracuse music audiences? JB: We have a lot of devoted live music supporters in Syracuse. The challenge is encouraging people to check out bands they’ve never seen and being open to songs they haven’t heard. I think we’re all guilty of focusing on our favorite local acts sometimes. But, if you grab a friend and check out a band you’ve never seen before, you might discover a new favorite. Cover acts always seem to be an easier sell with audiences, but it’s important to turn people on to the artist’s original work too. Every “cover song” was once someone’s original, right? I don’t think it’s an issue unique to Syracuse, though. CS: What would you tell a new musician getting into the biz? JB: Creating decent marketing materials and learning the basics of social media is one of the most valuable skills you can develop. Obviously you need to constantly hone your musical skills. But, you can be the best musician around, and if you’re not connecting with your fans and making it easy to promote your shows, you’re really limiting your exposure. I’m sometimes on the promoting end of shows I didn’t book and it’s super-frustrating to try and market a band or singer who doesn’t have an online presence. It’s sheer laziness, because we have more free and cheap tools at our disposal than ever before. I’m trying to upVoted Best Take-Out Restaurant 11 years in a row! You stop into the clubhouse and find a bustling restaurant. You are seated outside on a large deck overlooking the greens. Between the emerald hills and shimmering lake you can’t help but be overwhelmed by the natural beauty this location has to offer. You are then given exemplary service by the friendly staff. The sun is setting and painting the sky with tones of blue, purple, pink, yellow, and orange. Your meal arrives and the presentation is so beautiful that it rivals the scenery. You take a bite and realize that it is even more delicious than the presentation lead you to believe. Doesn’t this sound like something from a dream? It’s not a dream; it’s simply a description of dinner at The Loft at Vesper Hills Golf Club. You too can visit this little ‘slice’ of heaven this summer. The Loft at Vesper Hills is open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 9pm and on Sunday from 11am to 8pm. They are located at 4291 Octagon Road in Tully. If you haven’t been to Vesper Hills in the last few years, I highly recommend you treat yourself to this experience! This is their 6th season under the ownership of Mark and Suzanne Drumm. Throughout this time they have worked tirelessly to complete much needed renovations to this majestic golf course, including completely overhauling the greens, the parking lot, the club house, the pro shop, and the restaurant, The Loft. Owning a construction company, Drumm Construction, made the Drumm’s the perfect people to restore this property that had been well loved but previously neglected. Mark Drumm started this project because he wanted to give back to Tully, the community that he and his family have been a part of for seven generations. He wanted to give people a place where they could enjoy their leisure time golfing, dining, and hosting important events. Vesper Hills Golf Club has two great golfing specials that they offer to give back to the community. The first is that on weekdays seniors can golf, rent a cart and have a hot dog and a drink for only $25. The second is Military Mondays, so every Monday veterans can golf for free! The renovations, although still constantly improving, have been a complete success; one might say nothing short of a ‘hole in one!’ They have even added an island green at hole 8. They are proud to announce that they have been rated the sixth best public golf course in Central New York and among the top 5 best golf courses in the Finger Lakes. Vesper Hills Golf Club proudly hosted the 2018 Empire State Warm bread and Olive Oil dip to begin with! Senior Games. They are happy to announce that they will be
hosting other golfing events this summer including the SDGA Two-man scramble on July 29th and the first round of the Apogee Investments Senior Amateur Championship on August 6th. Lunch with Julie Briggs continued from pg 10 entire performance. I thought, man … THIS is what it’s about! That series directly led to my current project, The Listening Room at 443, which is a new venue with a similar vibe. The other highlight would probably be working on the New York State Blues Festival board of directors. In my first year we experimented with making it a ticketed event. Not only was it wildly unpopular, the weather was a complete washout and the festival lost a spectacular amount of money. But, I was also involved with the group that resuscitated the fest. We brought in Eric McElveen from Sterling Stage as the festival director and began making smarter decisions aimed at getting more bodies into Clinton Square. It was a tiny group of dedicated people doing an absolutely insane amount of work, but it paid off. I’m no longer involved, but I’m super-proud that this long time Syracuse tradition has not only survived, it’s bigger and better than ever. CS: Any noteworthy, shareable funny episodes? JB: I used to joke that if I ever wrote a book I would call it, “Jefferson Airplane Stole my Coffee Maker” … and I’ll leave it at that. CS: Is there anything you would like to see happen or wish for regarding our scene? JB: We have a really creative and diverse music scene happening right now, which is awesome. I think the challenge is two-fold: Creating shows that are financially viable. Syracuse music fans have gotten used to live music being “free”, which is unfortunate JULY 14th & 15th / Sat. 11AM - 5PM / Sun. Noon - 5PM because it makes it more and more difficult for venues to offer it. ASCAP and BMI fees are no joke and musicians deserve to be paid for their hard work. I think Funk n’ Waffles has made great strides in that department by regularly presenting shows with a cover charge. Live music is worth paying for. I would love to see more early shows. Syracuse has tons of music fans who are over 40 and we all have jobs, kids and lots of responsibilities. The days of being able to head out for a show that starts at 9 or 10pm are long gone, but 6-9pm on weekday – that’s totally doable. And it’s not just the older crowd – if you’re a college kid with early classes or someone who likes to get up in the morning to run or work out, an early start time makes a lot more sense. You shouldn’t have to stay up past your bedtime to catch great live music. CS: What’s coming up regarding your involvements? JB: Right now my main focus is launching a new business venture – The Listening Room at 443. By day it will be a funky, comfortable coffee lounge with a killer soundtrack. In the evening the bar will be open for scheduled events only, primarily regional acoustic acts. We’re also working on a few other community-oriented program ideas, and the space will be available for rent on nights we don’t have one of our own events. The venue is located at 443 Burnet Ave, which is around the corner from Laci’s Tapas Bar in the Hawley Green area. -It’s in the old Mrs. O’Leary’s/OPL spot. Aside from the Listening Room, Red Shoes Black Bag has a full slate of shows on the calendar: In the fall we’ve got Idols & Icons, Babylon Sisters and Ladies Night, there will be a holiday fundraiser around Christmas, and in the spring we’re doing the Disco Ball and A L S O F E AT U R I N G : Ruby Throated Sparrow. Middle Eastern Festival to Unveil Brand New Historically-Rich Flavors By Debra George If your palate is particular and you delight in digesting stories about food origins, then come for an exciting expedition in awesome eats with flavorings that span centuries — all to be found at this year’s Middle Eastern Festival at St. Elias Church this July 12-15. Making its groundbreaking debut at the event, dessert devotees will be in seventh heaven when they discover the divine “Arabic Pistachio Ice Cream.” St. Elias Church’s Middle Eastern Festival Chair Ramzi Khairallah has partnered with Gannon’s Isle, Syracuse’s favorite homemade ice cream shop, to co-create “Arabic Pistachio Ice Cream”. Unlike regular pistachio ice cream, this sweet creamy cool sensation boasts of the exclusive enhancements of rose water and orange blossom. While brand new to the American palate, these traditional Arabic flavorings have been relished for centuries —in fact, the very concept of ice cream itself is rooted in the history of the Middle East. The Persian Empire is credited with having invented the idea for ice cream then later revolutionizing it. The chefs really take pride in their use of fresh ingredients artfully crafted to create dishes that are delicious, unexpected, inventive, and beautiful! I can’t help but point out that I’ve never seen Yak on a menu anywhere else in town! The yaks are farm raised in Tully and the meat is high in protein, low in fat, and tastes incredible! We went to The Loft on a warm and sunny Friday evening. The drive was an absolute delight and reminded us of all of the natural beauty Central New York has to offer. We were quickly seated at a table for two on the deck overlooking the golf course and Otisco Lake. The view was nothing short of breathtaking! We began our meal with the warm bread and olive oil dip that was provided by our friendly server. There were so many things on the menu that looked absolutely mouth watering. We really liked that in addition to the menu there was a weekly specials menu to choose from. This menu changes weekly to reflect the fresh ingredients available and the innovative ideas of the chefs! For our appetizers we tried the Rhode Island Calamari, a delightful portion of calamari fried crisp and tossed with cherry

peppers and garlic herb butter. The sweetness of the calamari was perfectly complemented by the spiciness of the cherry peppers and was an interesting twist on traditional calamari. We were feeling a little adventurous and also ordered the Duck Wontons which were warm and creamy and served on a bed of chilled udon noodles and stir fry vegetables and topped with a citrus soy wasabi. This dish combined a lot of interesting flavors to create something that was unexpected and delicious. For our entrées we both chose selections from the weekly specials menu. Kyle ordered the Piquant Walleye, perfectly cooked Walleye topped with the Lofts own Union Oyster House crumb topping, Applewood smoked bacon, relish, onion and a lemon Aioli. It was also served with a side of rice and vegetables. The flavor combination was creative and cooked to absolute perfection. I ordered the Diver Scallops, pan seared U-10 scallops served over a gingered parsnip puree with a fresh cucumber and pineapple salsa. This dish was one of the prettiest things I have ever eaten and the ingredients created a masterpiece in my mouth! As we finished our meal we decided to stay a little longer to watch the beautiful sunset fill in the sky. We decided

Speaking of Boundaries Jared Diamond, in his book, Guns, Germs, and Steel – The Fates of Human Societies, recounts a 1972 conversation with a New Guinean tribal leader, Yali. Yali asked Diamond why Yali’s people had so little “cargo.” Yali defined “cargo” as all the goods and tools brought to New Guinea first by European colonists, and later, by modern day visitors such as Diamond who arrived on the island with trunk loads of First World technology. In 1972, New Guineans still lived without the stuff of industrialization. Jared Diamond wrote his book in answer to Yali’s question. Map #1 in “Sapiens,” Yuval Noah Harari’s long view of human evolutionary history, suggests that between forty-five and one hundred thousand years ago, homo sapiens moved northwest from eastern Africa, meeting, fighting, and combining DNA with the Neanderthals of Europe along with other human species elsewhere, eventually populating the world with what led to the current version of us. And we’re still changing.

A recent NY Times article, “The Bacteria Babies Need,” concludes, “The industrialization of our food supply is changing us from the inside out,” and that the intestinal tracts of 9 out of 10 American babies lack B. infantis, a beneficial bacterium which overwhelms the dangerous strains of bacteria that lead to chronic gut inflammation and illness. Scientists believe B. infantis is present in infants born and breastfed in undeveloped nations. According to the New York Times piece, B. infantis has gone missing from the US microbiome because of the long-term use of infant formula. Commercial formula does not contain oligosaccharides, complex carbohydrates found in human breast milk. Oligosaccharides, undigestible by babies, seem designed to feed B. infantis. Once fed by the oligosaccharides in a mother’s milk, B. infantis multiplies, spreads and protects the newborn’s digestive tract. Researchers believe B. infantis prevents colic, asthma and food allergies. Our digestive tract is the primary location of serotonin, a neurotransmitter heavily involved in emotional self-regulation and homeostasis. Then, the infant’s sucking during breastfeeding stimulates peristaltic micromovements that trigger the appendix to release initial supplies of good bacteria into that baby’s lower gut. While our own internal physiology is invisible to our own eyes, all of us and the world in which we live are 100% energy. Energy moves. Further, but not finally, direct physical contact between mother and newborn during and following birth is another way in which good bacteria kickstarts both immunity sharing and emotional bonding between mother and child. Microbiota grows in community. There is evidence that just like the animals we think we are not, human beings sense friendliness and safety through the microbiome and neurotransmitters surrounding us. While the term “bacteria” still has bad connotations, it’s now widely accepted that overuse of anti-biotics has wiped out much good bacteria. Bacteria preceded all other life on earth. Human beings, bacteria and cultures have traveled and evolved together through time, not always getting along and often trying to wipe each other out. Many self-help and popular psychology books suggest healthy personal boundaries prevent interpersonal violence. Healthy boundaries involve healthy mind body connections. Mountain ranges, rivers and oceans are not the boundaries they used to be. Technology has allowed unpredictable ideas, people and bacteria to travel quickly. We learn as we go. My health issues lead me to consume and digest as much information as I can on nutrition and well-being. A 2013 study published by the National Institute of Health links the rise in Celiac diagnoses to use of the herbicide glyphosate, which in low doses, is used to ripen sugar cane. Gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease can cause skin rashes, anemia, depression, reproductive problems and digestive ills. Celiac Disease involves vitamin malabsorption. Malabsorption for any reason is unhealthy. Speaking for myself, a lot of the gluten I used to consume came surrounded by sugar and dough. Sugar itself can be problematic. Once gluten free, I still found myself on the operating table because scar tissue from a previous surgery was strangling my digestive tract including my apparently – not – vestigial appendix. While hospitalized, I requested acidophilus to offset the effects of the anti-biotics I was taking and today, I continue to take pro-biotics. While many over the counter pro-biotics include B. infantis, I wonder, in the absence of oligosaccharides, does the B. infantis consumed by probiotic consumers simply pass on through without multiplying and helping? So far, oligosaccharides don’t come in supplements and if they did, we could not digest them. Nature designed oligosaccharides for B. infantis. Some moralistic types suggest that good health is always a matter of healthy lifestyle. Our lives are kickstarted in cultures, civilizations and situations governed by thinking that didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t think holistically. Compartmentalized judgements and observations devalue humanity’s natural processes, most of which are internal and invisible. This leaves many people struggling to get and stay healthy while dealing with biological baggage and emotional scar tissue resulting from some system’s past mistakes. Oh well.

Phillip (Rhys) and Elizabeth (Russell) Jennings seemed to have it all. Living with their teenage children Paige (Holly Taylor) and Henry (Keidrich Sellati) they owned a travel agency, and hosted dinner parties. They became particularly close to their new neighbor Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich,) who just so happened to be an counter-intelligence FBI agent. In their private lives, however, they were working with Russian government to help win the cold war. THE JENNINGS ning, they used sex, threats, and violence to enhance their agenda, and aid the Motherland. In the beginning, there were many parallels between THE AMERICANS and another classic modern series, BREAKING BAD, which was just reaching the end of its run. Like Walter White, Phillip and Elizabeth are seeming pillars of their community, hiding a dark secret that would destroy their family. They were also closely connected to a member of law enforcement who could unknowingly provide insider information, or bring them down. And, like Walt, we should hate the couple for what they’ve done to virtually everyone around them, and yet, like any great anti-hero, we yearn for them to succeed and to get away with their crimes. It was impossible not to make the connection between the shows at the time, but as THE AMERICANS progressed, it found its own unique voice. The first 3 seasons or so, while undeniably exhilarating and entertaining, had large doses of gratuitous sex and violence that were distracting. Like previous FX dramas, THE AMERICANS pushed the envelope and tested the boundaries of decency, much like THE SHIELD and SONS OF ANARCHY did during their runs. Many of these sequences enhanced the story and character development, and the savage brutality of these moments were meant to illicit strong reactions from the viewer. Admittedly, however, some of them (a man burning alive while trapped within the confines of a tire, for example) were a bit too over the top. They teetered on the edge of horror and comedy, and deterred, rather than advanced, the quality of the program. From season 4 on, however, these moments grew far less frequent, so when they did arrive, they were far more impactful. They were no longer an expected inevitability, but instead became sudden surprises that would take your breath away. It was at this point that THE AMERICANS went from really good, to absolutely brilliant. Focusing heavily on storytelling and character development, it allowed its continued on pg 24

Guard Yourself Against the Gardasil Vaccine I focus my practice on diet, exercise, sleep and stress but as an doctor I have given out my share and then some of injections including immunizations. It all started to go off the rails for me when my hospital suspended me for not getting the flu shot. Then I discovered that they give babies on the first day of their lives a shot to protect them from Hepatitis B. Now you know you get Hep B from dirty needles and unprotected sex. The shot only protects for 10 years at the maximum so it will have long worn off well before the child is actually engaging in dangerous activities. I am told the shot is given early to make sure the child is protected in case the mother had Hep B. That sounds quite reasonable except that virtually all mothers are checked during their pregnancy for Hepatitis B. If the mother is Hep B negative the child has virtually no risk –so why is every baby given this shot? Well, the investigations continued from there and I turned the all seeing eye of Sauron on the vaccines available for treating Human Papillomavirus … referred to as HPV. There are over 100 strains of this virus and some of the strains are associated with warts, cervical and anal cancer. There are three vaccines out there … Gardasil, Gardasil 9 and Cervarix. Cervarix is marketed only for girls but the other two are for boys and girls age

9-26. Now preventing cancer is a noble idea but guess what? This vaccine has never been shown to prevent cancer. It has only been shown to diminish the presence of these viruses that are associated with cancer. The facts are that, according to the experts, that most of us will acquire these viruses and clear them naturally. If certain strains persist too long they can stimulate changes that result in cervical and anal cancer and warts. Only a few of the strains are known to cause cancer and the vaccines don’t contain all those strains. Of course these viruses are not the only risk factor for cervical cancer … co-infections, age, number of pregnancies, use of birth control pills, smoking, etc. are all risk factors for cervical cancer and at least a third of cervical cancers are not associated with the viruses. HPV Strain Now 4,000 deaths a year occur from cervical cancer. This is no joke. But you have to put it in perspective … roughly 60,000 deaths a year in women from lung cancer and 40,000 deaths a year in women from breast cancer. We have cut the rate of death from cervical cancer in half … not from the vaccine but from pap smears. And guess what? … even if you get the vaccine you still have to go for regular pap smears so what’s the point of getting the shot? to treat of 1. Every person you treat benefits. That’s great and thats rare. Experts say that if the NNT is greater than 40 it’s probably not a great intervention. Another example is using cholesterol drugs … statins … to prevent heart attacks. In primary prevention the NNT for statins is at least 250. That means 249 people will take a statin and get no benefit and still be exposed to risks and side effects for one person to not have a heart attack. Not a good NNT at all and one of the reasons I don’t routinely recommend drugs for high cholesterol unless you have already had a heart attack or stroke. Now the NNT for the HPV vaccines are greater than 1,000!!! Way more than 1,000 women have to get the shot for possibly one women to not get cancer. Not great odds even in Vegas. Ok … so efficacy is questionable … at least we can be assured its a safe shot. I mean its safety and efficacy that are the watchwords for all vaccines aren’t they? Well, hold on Hamilton because safety with this vaccine is a real issue. First off it uses a high dose of Aluminum. Aluminum is toxic to the brain, the bones and the kidneys. The FDA states the the maximum parenteral dose allowed for aluminum in a day is 25 mcg. Each shot of Gardasil contains 500 mcg of aluminum. Thats 20 times the daily recommended amount. How is that appropriate? Did I mention the well documented fact that if a women is already infected with one of the strains found in the vaccine that it can make the infec-

Don’t forget the polystyrene 80 and the borate that’s in the vial. Just ask your doctor next time you decide to get a shot … Can he or she name three ingredients in the vial? I know I couldn’t until I started studying these things. Next let’s looks at the reported trouble with the vaccines. According to the National Vaccine Information Center by 2015 there were over 35,000 reports of adverse events from these vaccines including over 200 deaths. There have been reports of all sorts of serious side effects included Guillain-Barre syndrome, transverse myelitis, motor neuron disease, venous thromboembolic events and fainting … which is very common with this vaccine. Lets looks internationally … India has a huge problem with cervical cancer … It’s a major killer there … because they don’t have a Pap smear program … they have decided NOT to routinely use the vaccines due to side effects. Japan is another developed country with a long history of vaccination use. Their use of these vaccines has plummeted from over 70 percent to less than 5 percent. Must be some reason for that. Finally and what disturbs me as much as anything is the attempt to make these vaccines mandatory. Why is our government so adamant about insisting we get these injections? Whatever happened to free choice. If vaccination is really effective the only person who can be hurt by not vaccinating myself is myself. I am free to smoke myself to death. I am free to drink myself to death but I am not free to get anal warts if I want to run that risk? Something doesn’t make sense here and until it does we should treat and immunize lightly. This is the land of Freedom and we should guard those freedoms well. There are many more vaccines of questionable benefit coming down the pike … Fine for you if you make an informed choice … not fine if some unknown committee decides all Americans should be forced to take a shot to work or attend school etc. Of course you should not make decisions about your health from some article you read in the paper no matter how compelling. You must do your our research … after all it’s YOUR health and YOU are in charge of it. I think you will find your discussion about vaccines with your health care provider to be a very interesting one. I don’t personally know any Doctors who have done any vaccine research at all but I don’t get out much. Hopefully your physician is up for a reasonable and reasoned conversation about what’s being jabbed in your arm! Until next month … get well … stay well.

H: The Story of Heathcliff’s Journey Back to Wuthering Heights
by Lin Haire-Sargeant I recently started watching a delightful BBC series (not new), “Dickensian.” The conceit in this series is that all the Dickens’ characters are tossed in the same pot – the Little Curiosity Shop is just down the street from Scrooge & Marley’s; Fagin’s orphans are plying the same streets that Miss Havisham is walking; Bob Cratchit is acquainted with the Bumbles. It’s a delicious stew. In Haire-Sargeant’s book, the notion is: what if Heathcliff and Cathy were real people, and Charlotte Bronte learned about them from a letter, rather than sharing their story with Emily, who then makes them up out of an imagination born on the moorlands and nurtured on childhood stories? Taking a break from the horrid and the political (or, is that just saying the same thing twice?), this month’s book is a romantic novel that jumbles together the Private Rooms Available for up to 100 People characters of at least two Bronte novels: in this telling, Heathcliff is the protege of a Mr. Are, though he doesn’t learn this right away. Nelly Dean has stolen a letter from Heathcliff to Cathy, keeping it from her on the eve of her wedding to Edgar Linton. July 7th & 21st In the original book, “Wuthering Heights,” the two main things we don’t know are: August 4th whose child is Heathcliff, and, where did he go and what did he do to become a rich “gentleman” while he was away? at Moose I suppose most readers of the book ponder the same questions, though only in Mountain Hastings, NY Speedway passing. Here, they are the key element of the writer’s intriguing “what if” tale. The tale is told in Heathcliff’s voice. status quo. If Democrats don’t recognize this and develop a roadmap of impressive unique and patriotic change they will fail. There is only one issue that does all of this. That is to remove the destructive influence of our Campaign Finance system and develop public financing. This will forge a path for the best that humans can be to run the country. An example is the current iconically cowardly Republican Congress afraid to go against Trump, even to save kids, for fear of losing re-election money. Google the influence of money in elections. The damage is endless and far beyond disgusting and prevails because money wants this land to protect them. And the rest, very literally and provenly do not matter. The previous three sentences describe the decimating of America as intended by our Founders. Let’s stop and think about that for a moment. Donald Trump is the final product of a purchased government. Deceit and greed became the rule rather than fair hard work moving America forward. Trump’s success is an ominous warning for a people reaching away from all they know. A people reaching away from decades of costly gridlock and systemic failure for anything that provides hope. A people reaching away from a failed collective leadership that literally watched and self-served as 10’s of millions of jobs left the land and sheer greed paved the road for 1% of Americans to amass 90% of the Country’s bounty. A people realizing no one was protecting them. All of this as the silence of the press was nuclear and the words “Free Press” became synonymous with the ideals of a few Media Moguls. Evolve can be such a nasty word. Often slow and cunning with shocking finality. Have we evolved full circle? Trump is a symbol of failed Governing. The question is: “When we wake up to what really has happened, will we stop wealth from buying our leadership, or will we continue to devolve into violent chaos?” The grumbling you hear is coming from the graves of our Founding Fathers as Trump bashes the institutions that protect us from Dictators. I cannot imagine how such low quality exists among so many that are successful. Make sure you have not eaten for a while. Go to “You Tube.” Search “Trump Invites His Employees to Praise Him During Cabinet Meeting.” It is reminiscent of Stalin, Hitler, Hussein and Kim Jong Un. Yet it is an American cabinet meeting. Today one percent have the bounty of most of our Middle Class. They have reduced the “American Dream” to historical rhetoric. They have the money that would have provided opportunity and education for the poor. They have the money that should have gone to infrastructure. The warnings against monopolies and huge trusts usurping power by Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt have been ignored. These multi-Billionaires now exist with money bins that shame Scrooge McDuck. Bill Gates alone has 436 billion. The Walton’s 148 Billion. Intentionally or otherwise they got there ignoring the rest of us. Each did not regard the decimation of wages and small businesses and ruined lives they left behind. Each became a mega-giant and ate up small business. Each along with elected leaders watched as Manufacturers moved overseas and then supplied the MegaGiants with products. This was a circle of destruction that ate our Middle Class, caused endless poor and made a joke out of equality and compassion for our people. To those who are not with me yet, clarity should come when you ask yourself: Who do you think is in charge? 545 ingenious billionaires, among the smartest people in the world … or 535 obsequious, low character politicians with low leadership skills that sell our well-being, that demonstrate by deed low quality and low integrity, that can’t get anything done, and are systemically forced to work as wimps? Do the math. Believe me wealth did some time ago. The rich are mighty now. Control is no longer a goal, it is a maintenance issue. The purchased Government will continue to serve as their cover to appease. Remember, Constitutional intent did not get them where they are. They are the ones that bought Congress to stop opposition as they sent your work overseas. That is the problem when your system allows complete and thorough unchecked greed to thrive by buying the influence of those that should regulate them. First they turn “regulate” into a dirty freedom sucking word so they may be free to take it all. Then they take. Unimpeded and with heartless greed. Devoid of Founding Spirit. Though intent was clear our Constitution was written without a description of intent. There was also no adhering direction. In any human environment without clear enforceable rules, greed and evil will always intrude and prevail. The prime purpose of rules continued on pg 42

Enjoy Summer While Staying Fit Summer is here, finally! The season is in full-swing and so are barbecues, ice cream stands, and frozen cocktails. If you feel like you’re falling off the wagon, you’re not alone. This is the time of year that we all kick off our shoes, loosen our belts and live a little! You don’t have to apologize. You can enjoy everything summer has to offer without completely sabotaging all of your hard work. So, go ahead! Have that ice cream cone. Here are a few tips on how to enjoy summer while staying fit.
Exercise in the Morning
Finding the time to workout in the summer can be tricky. Especially when you have graduation parties, weddings, barbecues and family trips planned every weekend. When you put your workout off for later in the day, it’s less likely to happen. You can have results or excuses. Not both. So, just get it done. Set your alarm for an hour earlier and go for a run, lift some weights, or take a group fitness class at the gym. Not only will you feel good about getting it done, but it will free up the rest of your day, rev up your metabolism and get those happy endorphins flowing.

Pack Your Lunch
No matter what time of year it is, packing a healthy lunch is always a good idea. When you leave this simple task undone, it can leave you hungry and making all the wrong food choices. You never want to order lunch on an empty stomach and you certainly don’t want to be reaching for junk! Try making this Chickpea, Avocado and Feta Salad. It’s full of seasonal produce, doesn’t require you to cook a thing and comes together in 15 minutes flat. Ingredients: 1 can or 19 oz. chickpeas (drained and rinsed) ½ english cucumber (chopped) 4 green onions (diced) ¼ cup parsley (finely diced) 1 avocado (peeled and diced) 1 lime (juiced) ¼ cup feta or goat cheese (crumbled) 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil sea salt and black pepper (to taste) Directions: 1. Combine all ingredients together in a bowl and toss. Divide into bowls and enjoy.

Grilled vegetables are an excellent way to fill up your plate with flavor and provide your body with the nutrients it desires. Just take a jar of water, add 3 lemon slices, 2 strawberries, and 1 sprig of mint. Add all ingredients to the jar, cover with the lid and put in the fridge until cool.
Bring Something Healthy
Going to a party with a dish to pass? You don’t have to be the person that brings the dish that everyone loves but hates you for bringing! Try to bring something that will add health benefits to the table and not inches to everyone’s waistline. Take this Cucumber Tomato Avocado Salad to your next gathering and you will be the talk of the party! Ingredients: Directions: 1 lb. Roma tomatoes 1. Place chopped tomatoes, sliced 1 English cucumber cucumber, sliced red onion, diced 1/2 medium red onion sliced avocado, and chopped cilantro into 2 avocados diced a large salad bowl. 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil or sunflower oil 2. Drizzle with 2 Tbsp olive oil and 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice (from 1 medium lemon) 2 Tbsp lemon juice. Toss gently to 1/4 cup 1/2 bunch cilantro, chopped combine. Just before serving, toss 1 tsp sea salt with 1 tsp sea salt and 1/8 tsp black 1/8 tsp black pepper pepper.

Who doesn’t like Smores when they go camping. I know I do! This doesn’t mean your whole diet has to be ruined. Plan ahead and check out some healthy snacks and dinners that everyone can enjoy. It’s the perfect time of year to make Foil Packed Grilled Salmon with Lemony Asparagus. Check out the recipe below.
Ingredients: 20 asparagus spears, trimmed 4 6-oz. skin-on salmon fillets 4 tbsp. butter, divided 2 lemons, sliced kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper Torn fresh dill, for garnish

Directions: 1. Lay two pieces of foil on a flat surface. Place five spears of asparagus on foil and top with a fillet of salmon, 1 tablespoon butter, and two slices lemon. Loosely wrap, then repeat with remaining ingredients until you have four packets total. 2. Heat grill on high. Add foil packets to grill and grill until salmon is cooked through and asparagus is tender, about 10 minutes. 3. Garnish with dill and serve.
This is the best time of year to take advantage of the warm weather and soak up some vitamin D. Being outside is so therapeutic and has a huge impact on our mental health. Go for a hike, ride your bicycle, rollerblade, swim, kayak, or play beach volleyball. I don’t care what you do as long as you are actively enjoying the outdoors.
Eat Local
There is something so satisfying about preparing a meal with locally grown produce. Find your nearest farmer’s market or fruit stand. Maybe you have a neighbor with a garden? Grab whatever catches your eye and put it to good use.

Summer fly’s by too quickly every year, so try to enjoy all the beauty it has to offer while it’s here. You don’t have to be perfect you just need to be mindful. Celebrate your healthy habits instead of looking at them as an obligation. Remember, you are making decisions that will make you healthier and fit today, tomorrow and in the long-term. Summer is short and life is good, so soak it up! I have been a personal trainer for over seventeen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! From A to Z on the CLWT America’s First Wine Trail. The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail is the first of its kind in the country, formed in 1983 and this year it celebrates its 35th year! Beauty. Cayuga Lake is home to some of the most stunning views of vineyard-clad lake sides, rolling hills and waterfalls. Carved by glaciers, it’s the longest and second deepest of the Finger Lakes, at 38.2 miles long and 435 feet deep at its deepest point. It reaches 53 feet below sea level, and along with Seneca Lake, it is among the deepest lakes in North America. The 87-mile loop around the lake was named a New York State Scenic Byway in 2002 by the New York State Department of Transportation. Cayuga. It’s pronounced kay-oo-guh, not to be confused with our crooked neighbor to the west, Keuka Lake, which sounds almost the same over the phone. Dogs. All 14 member wineries are pet-friendly and invite you to bring your furry companions along. Estate Winery. An estate winery is one that grows 100% of their own grapes. Finger Lakes. Cayuga Lake is 1 of the 11 Finger Lakes. The rest: Otisco, Skaneateles, Owasco, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Honeoye. Canadice, Hemlock, and Conesus. Governor’s Cup. In 2017, Buttonwood Grove winery won the Governor’s Cup for their 2016 Riesling, which is the equivalent of winning the Oscars. Horizontal tastings. Travel the Trail tastings Rieslings from the same vintage, but grown in different vineyards and produced by different winemaker.

Or any winter month, really, is one of the best times for a wine tasting. Travel Alert I know, I know – I can be a nag and a worrier when it comes to applications and programs. I urge readers to check their computer’s security periodically, and take necessary precautions with the obvious threats like phishing, risky websites, and uncertain downloads. Of course these days our “computers” are no longer big bulky towers, or even handy laptops or tablets, though they may be any of these as well, but are little innocent looking devices held in our hands and carried around from dawn til well past dusk. Is anything more worrying, next to a flashing light in the rear view mirror, than not being able to find your phone? (And if you don’t have a locate-my-phone app on at least one of your other devices, get one!) And of course, be sure to auto-lock your phone so that a password, or better yet, thumb print, is required before accessing it after a short period of disuse, as theft protection. Long-time readers might remember my wondering when the first ticket might be issued based on a toll-road on/off time, using your “EZ Pass” as a means of determining when you started and ended your journey – and what rate of speed might have been required for that trip. My best guess is that handing out tickets would simply have defeated the benefits —to both the driver and the state— of the device itself, and nobody would have wanted one unless it was simply for bridge crossing during heavy traffic times.

Needless to say, it didn’t take long for fleet management to realize the benefits of GPS tracking of their vehicles. Was a truck en route, and was the driver off the clock within the required number of hours? Where was the rental car? If a vehicle was broken down, it could be pinpointed geographically with ease. But it doesn’t take an EZ Pass or a specially equipped vehicle to know where you are when – you’re carrying the capability with you every day, every “where,” on your cell phone. By now we’re all aware we leave the thumbprints of our activity and whereabouts as we choose, “checking in” at our favorite night spot, tracking our steps, making a call while on the road. But now there are a significant number of apps designed specifically to track your location – for your benefit. But I like to remind people of Prometheus and fire: for every good that a new technology brings, there’s the potential for risk, as well. I am a big fan of an app called “Waze.” It’s a mapping tool for your Smart Phone that not only provides you with tools like turn by turn directions, anticipated arrival time, and alternate routes, but “shared” drives (to share your progress and arrival time with those who might be interested) and things like traffic stops, or road hazards. The Trail’s profile of winemakers is very diverse, ranging from selftaught to highly trained, some who have been in the industry for decades and some who are recent graduates from local viticulture programs. Each of them is capable of producing premium wines. Quality. We guarantee a high quality product and experience. Residual sugar. Some wineries will list or tell you the RS in each wine. This is the sugar that remains in the wine after fermentation completes. The higher the RS, the sweeter the wine will be. Spirits. The Finger Lakes region has an extended growing season of about 190-205 days due to the radiant heat that the lakes provide the hillside vineyards into fall. You. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you, our loyal wine drinkers! Zinderella. 1 1/2 pounds red snapper fillets, cut into 2 inch pieces 1/2 cup white vinegar salt and ground black pepper to taste 3 cups fish stock 1 pound clams in shell, scrubbed 1/2 pound medium shrimp, with shells 6 (3/4 inch thick) slices Italian bread, toasted

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan, Dutch oven, or preferably a clay pot over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, carrot, celery, bay leaves, parsley, and red pepper flakes. Cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the mashed tomatoes and cook for 15 minutes over medium heat. Add the fish. Pour in the vinegar or wine. Cook until the liquid has almost evaporated, about 10 minutes; pour in the fish stock. Cover, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 10 minutes. Gently mix in the clams. Cook until clams have opened (discard any that don’t open) about 2 minutes, and then stir in the shrimp. Cook until the shrimp are pink, about 3 minutes. Place a slice of toasted bread in the bottom of each bowl. Ladle brodetto over the bread and serve immediately.

What alerted me to this app was that it announced that you didn’t even need to “start” it – it would simply track where you had gone, when. If the route was, say, here to your kids’ school, that’s personal and could be set as such. A longer trip, more unusual route might require your selection of business or pleasure. Either way, the app knew you were in the car and traveling (as does Waze, which, though now equipped with voice activation, will not allow you to interact unless you specifically tell it you are a passenger). And it knew where you were. The latest entrant made me a little more uneasy: how’s my driving? The app presumably tracks you, via GPS, and knows you’re approaching a stop sign. Did you come to a full stop? How about a merge lane – did you stop, or merge smoothly, or jet out into the driving lane too quickly? Are you weaving across a perceived median? It has the potential, of course, to be a great teaching tool for a beginning driver, or simply to help you brush up on your skills. But as with any GPS tool, the fact that you’re trackable means – you’re trackable! And while yes, there is research into “cloaking devices,” (you know who you are Star Trek fans), the benefits of the GPS system in your phone is lost if you shield it or even turn it off (though presumably the tracking is still possible). I’m still opting for the benefits of “Find My Car” and “Waze.” But, I remind myself, Mary Shelley didn’t subtitle her titanic novel “A Modern Prometheus” for nothing.

We should learn to admit that our failed government allowed the people’s will to be bought, and our leaders were complicit and watched America get stripped naked of decent work. The bounty belonging to the people was confiscated by the few by devising an economy that insured this result. They bought the politicians so they would left alone. Greed watched a debt become insane and did nothing as the insanity compounded endangering not just our greatness, but our infrastructure and sustainability as a viable trusted government. Our leaders ceded to wealthy desire and allowed gridlock and favor that has left our country on course with third world plight and injustice. Money has risen to rule Government. The big difference is with these folks openly in charge we have a clear front row seat. This instead of the obscure back seat of recent generations. We are able to clearly watch change as wealth sees it, as the rest of our ideals are relegated to history. And our path to the low wage unregulated third world is paved with environmental destruction and widespread poverty. The answer: Gut Campaign Finance. Replace with an impartial public system. Restore the best that humans can be. For 35 years I have written about this great American evil. It was the words of Bobby Kennedy that never allowed futility: “Few will have the greatness to bend History itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. And in the total of all those acts will be written the History of a Generation”.
