Thank you to our Sponsors!

From all of us at Mitchell Cattle we welcome you to our 19th Annual Best Bet Bull Sale!

Thank you for taking the time to look through our catalogue and consider our program. We have compiled as much useful information as possible to assist in your selection. If you have a chance to stop in, we would love to take you through the bulls and tour through the cowherd.

We feel we have put together a tremendous set of bulls this year. There are more red Simmental than we have had in the past, very consistent from end to end. Although fewer blacks, they are very solid, good footed and sound. We have the most impressive set of Red Angus power bulls that we have ever produced, with the front end performing every bit as well as the Sim bulls. A large selection of heifer suitable Red Angus and some Simmental options too.

Our focus continues to be cow quality and productivity, soundness and foot structure. Our cattle travel extreme distances in the mountains, the bull calves are raised on mother’s milk – no creep feed – so they must be able to function in the environment that you expect them to go to work. We use only walking herd sires selected from the leading producers and operations across Canada. We need to know that these sires are able to move and function with soundness and ability, it is more important to us than looking pretty in a catalog and collecting semen.

The bulls are developed on a high roughage Total Mixed Ration. Hay, alfalfa silage, corn silage and a maximum of ten pounds of bull ration with mineral. The calves come off the mountain late so go on feed mid-October. The whole pen has gained an average of 4 pounds per day for the first 130 days on only ten pounds of grain.

Everyone is involved here, Thompson and Anja have been doing night shifts for calving and Leanna processes calves through the barn, tagging and weighing. I am thankful again that Leanna has taken on most of the catalogue; she knows every cow and is without sentimental attachment when choosing which ones stay or go. She carries on our thoughts that every cow must take a calf to the range, every year, no exceptions, no free passes.

We certainly value all our customers! We believe that it is extremely important to stand behind our bulls, if there is a problem we would appreciate being the first to know to remedy any unforeseen issues. 80% of our bulls sell to repeat customers. As in the past, we will look after delivering bulls to you, either in your yard or at a convenient spot close to you.

Our thanks to BC Livestock; the crew always does a fantastic job preparing the yards and looking after all our needs in Williams Lake.

Lot 1 is a big-time growth bull with a more than acceptable birth weight. We had a great deal of interest in Back To Reality 99L in 2024 but unfortunately had to pull him from the sale due to a foot injury. He ended up healing well enough to cover a small selection of cows and we are thrilled to offer this sire group as the result! The thing about having a herd bull reach 8 years of age is you learn an awful lot about his progeny in that time, and we have been so fortunate to continue to walk Eastwood long after we calved his first daughters. Eastwood improves calving ease and maternal traits regardless of what he is bred to. He is moderate and complete, and to no surprise calved extremely well used on heifers. He boasts a 19.8 for CE, -4.5 for BW and 13 for MCE, which not only lends him to being in the top 1% of the breed for these traits but the top 1% by good margin. Springcreek Simmentals bought a semen package and used Eastwood on heifers and mature cows, and the resulting progeny has been fantastic. His sons and daughters were highly regarded in the Pursuit of Perfection bull sale as well as in Springcreek’s dispersal.

Dark cherry red hair and excellent udder quality for multiple generations on the dams’ side; with cow-herd builders like Poker Face, Crosby, and the Red Quorum daughter Erixon Lady 2P in the pedigree. There’s a ton to like here. This bull is hard to fault in his structure, and free in his movement. One you appreciate from every angle, and one that will add a lot of maternal strength wherever you use him. The dam of Lot 8 is also the granddam of Lot 37, who weaned at 925 pounds. You can see the consistently high output of these females; they sure don’t owe us a dime. Where does one start with this bull… I have always been a huge fan of his dam. She may not be a big cow, but her fertility, structural soundness, and production record set her apart from the rest. Her EPDs portray her excellent calving ease, as well as having pretty stellar carcass traits. As 180L is a Galen 48G son he displays that extra rib, length, and hip we’re always chasing. We took a chance to use 180L on heifers as he displayed pretty outstanding performance and his sire was certainly a power bull; but nevertheless, he calved phenomenally well! His dam just so happens to be out of another “Reality” cow, and I’m telling you, they really are that good. She’s also the great granddam of Lot 13.

If we hadn’t retained her last bull calf this one might’ve stayed home too. 244M can’t help but be dark red, his dam and grand dam are both the same. He’s been one of my favourites since day one. My calving notes read “super bright calf”, and his dams’ calves are always thrifty. He’s matured into a masculine fronted, proud, strong and thick topped bull who exhibits width and fullness at every angle. I don’t think there’s any room for more muscle under that hide, and yet he still appears soggy and not hard-made.

I will be retaining a bull out of 319J one day, she is good on so many levels. Firstly, she’s a “Horizon” sired by the Dillenger bull who left us a large group of sound structured, easy calving, long-lived, fertile cows. Second, she is out of Bling 36Z who, over her 14 years, has contributed massively to our black Simmental program. Lot 30 is “in the green” for 12/13 EPD traits and has the look to back the numbers. He has a small, keen head and is so smooth made even though he’s full on and heavily muscled throughout. With a long shoulder, extreme depth of rib and fullness through his heart. His hip shape and thickness over his top is very much like his sire’s. The 172J sired females that we are calving now are milking well and sure are pretty!

Even though 191H was bred on the range and we had to DNA this calf to find his sire, he came back as my first guess and it’s easy to pick out who his daddy is! Starting off with his keen button head, proud frontend structure, heavily muscled topline, and ending with a big, round hip and we have ourselves a winner. MAF 172J stamps his offspring very well. The same goes for his daughters, you can pretty well pick them out simply by their square udder structure and pear-like shape. I have to add, if you don’t want milk production, this isn’t the one for you – his daughters are going to milk well. Lot 31’s moderate birthweight stems from his Eastwood dam, and the Revelstock 12C influence further back. He maintains a balanced EPD profile and is still top 3% of the breed for maternal calving ease, which is one of our “sacred” numbers.

Lot 57 goes back to one of the most beautiful cows to walk the place, Downey 10A. This bull is strong through his forerib and loin and carries ample muscle throughout. He is deep through his heart and middle, and ranked in the top 20 at weaning. His dam is an angular fronted female with great capacity, and this isn’t her first time bringing a bull to the sale. We were excited to find this good Hannibal son backed by a hardworking, good uddered blaze face cow at Ag-Land Farms. 69K combines moderate birthweights with top 5% and 10% WW and YW EPDs, and the numbers have come to fruition with calves born bright and easily and having tons of performance after birth. The sons resulting from 69K are some of my favourite to view at the bunk – looking down their toplines is a view full of meat and muscle and they have small, sharp herd-bull type heads. We calved his first daughters this year as well and it’s easy to appreciate their little button heads, easy fleshing ability and capacity.

One thing that is neat about this pen of bulls is that it truly is “one pen.” 100 bulls fed together on a high percentage roughage ration, and amongst the two breeds we really get to see which genetics shine. Starting at 88 pounds and weaning at 925, 113N is unmatched for birth to weaning spread. He has gone on to gain nearly 5 pounds per day, weighing 1335 at 11 months of age. Tycoon has worked impeccably well for us. He is so versatile in the range of cows or heifers one can breed him to and see good results. Pretty awesome also for a heifer’s calf to mature into the type of bull 256N is. Tons of muscle and thickness throughout, correct in his makeup and plenty of style to burn. His dam is a sweet little cow to look at, and we retained her maternal brother for in-herd use.

We needed an outcross calving ease herd sire for our Angus cow herd and 2K has been exactly that and more. His calves come easily, and we’ve used him with success bred to both cows and heifers. His progeny is very smooth made and have awesome length of body, dark red colour, and real presence to them. 2K is backed by some stellar cow families at McMillen’s and his daughters are my favourite Angus females that have calved here in some time. VET’S MESSAGE

Mitchell Cattle Co. has invested in the health of their herd of cattle for many years through a comprehensive herd health strategy. Currently all breeding females and bulls receive an annual vaccination prior to the breeding season to protect against all the important reproductive viruses and bacteria including IBR, Type I and II BVD and Leptosprirosis. All calves are vaccinated at branding to provide protection against the important viruses and bacteria causing respiratory and clostridial diseases. Currently calves receive a modified live vaccine against IBR, Type I and II BVD, BRSV, and PI3, as well as a modified live bacterin against shipping fever and a killed bacterin against Histophilus somnus, Blackleg and other clostridial diseases. At weaning all bull and heifer calves receive a booster with the same vaccines and bacterins used at branding. In late fall, all cows, bulls, and weaned calves are treated with a topical endectocide to control internal and external parasites.

All bulls in the sale have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam to evaluate scrotal size and shape, semen motility and morphology, and structural soundness. Through my long-standing veterinary relationship with Mitchell Cattle Co., I also know that you can rest assured that each bull is out of a sound, solid, productive cow. Ian and Anja rigorously select their herd for fertility, sound udders, correct feet and legs, and temperament. These cows go to the mountain with their calf each year and come back in the fall for pregnancy testing. Open and late cows, or cows not meeting Mitchell Cattle Co strict criteria, are culled – no excuses, no exceptions.

As the consulting veterinarian I am very proud to work with Mitchell Cattle Co. If there are any questions regarding the health management program at Mitchell Cattle Co. please contact me.
