Bulls Weaned October 26, 2024

Yearling Weight April 1, 2025

An aerial photo of the ranch in the winter of 1990 oversees the work area where we prepare our portion of this catalogue. It reminds us raising cattle requires dedication and passion in order to persist through fickle weather and markets and the day-to-day tasks of keeping critters alive and where they are supposed to be. Our herd is the product of our passion and dedication. We really do enjoy raising good cattle. For us, a “vacation” typically involves looking at another producers’ herd or bull pen in search of our next herd sire, and a day rarely passes without a conversation about improving some aspect of our herd or operation. We strive to raise structurally sound and efficient cattle.

Ideally, a cow should have a pretty Angus head, flat topline, deep girth and flank, full hip, wide base, correct legs, and feet with a good claw set and lots of heel. This should all be covered by a coat of thick, jet-black hair and completed by a full udder with small, level teats. Good looks are just one part. Temperament is very important to us. Despite our cattle being in large fields with minimal human contact, we expect them to be docile and cooperative when we handle them. We only keep cattle that are quiet and easy to handle. Fertility and maternal instinct are also key considerations because we want a cow to remain in the herd preferably for a decade or more raising plenty of quality calves. Purebred heifers are retained with the top ones reentering the purebred herd and the remainder moving into the commercial herd. In regards to the bull calves produced, we retain a few each year to use on our commercial cows either at home or in a community pasture.

We bring in new genetics through walking herd sires for our purebred herd. Selection begins with what catches our eye in a catalogue or online. From there, candidates are evaluated based on birth, weaning, and yearling weights. Birthweights need to ensure calves are small enough to be born quickly but with enough mass to fight off a chill while getting that first suck. Weaning and yearling weights need to be realistic and equal to or better than what we are currently achieving in our own herd. Most of the bulls we sell go to commercial operations, and we’re all after more pounds. Next comes the more difficult and even more important task of finding a bull that is physically and temperamentally sound. We spend hours watching videos, examining photos, researching pedigrees, evaluating EPD’s, and driving to see the bulls on our short list in person. We need something that is going to maintain and build on our current herd, so we are very picky with a herd sire’s structure, especially his feet and temperament. A flaw in a bull can set our program back significantly.

These bulls have been raised much the same since we switched to selling two-year-old bulls instead of yearlings. In April and May, they are born on pasture where they remain with their mothers until late fall. After weaning, we feed them a mixed ration until June when we finally have a place for them back on pasture that isn’t beside a field of cycling cows. After a summer spent on grass, these bulls remain on pasture until late December as we gradually transition them back onto a mixed ration of silage, hay, and a textured grain blend designed for bull development. When we start to prepare for the sale, we bring the bulls into the yard to a large pen where they still have to walk for feed and water over plenty of rough and steep ground. We are lucky to earn a living doing something we enjoy. We would like to thank all of our fellow producers who have been buyers, under-bidders, or just interested in our herd. Your interest and support are appreciated. We truly aim to breed and raise bulls that will go out and improve the quality of cattle wherever they go. If you have any questions about our program or this year’s offering feel free to contact us. We enjoy having people come and look at the bulls at the ranch prior to the sale.

In 2023, I set out in search of a calving ease prospect and came across a group of bulls that really intrigued me. W Sunrise Duece 733K has really exceeded our expectations. At a calving ease EPD of +13, he ranks in the top 2% of the breed in that trait. We have used him on our entire purebred heifer pen the last 2 years, and we have not had to assist any of his offspring yet. Sometimes you sacrifice performance for birthweight, but not with Duece. His progeny grow! They grow into jet-black, smooth-framed, eye-appealing, structurally correct animals with good working temperaments. He has a highly maternal pedigree from both his sire and dam, so we have high expectations for the heifers we have retained from him. Four of his five sons offered qualify for a Canadian pedigree.

Lucky earned his name. He was born a little too close to the creek bank and was saved from imminent hypothermia or drowning by a timely check of the calving heifers. With cattle prices at an all time high, it looks promising for the future of the industry. We have really appreciated the support and enthusiasm for our bulls even when we all know this business has its challenges. We wouldn’t be raising purebreds if we were not passionate about quality angus cattle. We love to show our customers what we have been raising. So, feel free to stop by anytime and have a look. With that said we will tell you about what we have been trying to focus on in our cattle.

In a world of efficiency, we focus on cattle that will walk soundly the duration of their lives, milk, breed, and maintain their condition without any maintenance. This leads to fewer cull cows, requiring fewer heifer calves retained, maximizing calf production. When you’re shopping Bear Creek Angus two year old bulls, we’ve done our utmost to ensure all of these things in their breeding and we strive for every bull to go out and improve the genetics at your operation.

When the structure, udder quality, and fertility is taken care of we breed for length of body, eye appealing angus character, including an angus head which promotes calving ease, and lots of natural muscle. When selecting a sire, we try to use a bull with the fewest flaws.

Our environment changes what type of cattle work where and on what inputs. Our cattle are raised on ranch conditions and are developed slowly to ensure longevity. Conditions can be harsh in our drought-prone area, cattle need to travel for grass and water, and thus we’ve become extremely harsh on foot quality and fleshing ability as we mentioned above. We solely make our living raising cattle, commercial and purebred, and our cattle work for us because we need them to. And we believe they can work for you too.

Visits before the sale to view the bulls, cows, and herd sires are very welcome. Our website has pictures of the cows and herd sires. If you have any questions, please contact us at:

15K offers so much quality for all breeding programs. Jonathon said he’s probably off his best cow, and once we saw her, we agreed and had no doubt we needed 15K. She was 12 at the time and looked 6, her feet and udder were impeccable for her age. 15K has maintained great feet and great structure. He has developed into a large powerful bull. We kept his entire heifer calf crop, they’re just the deepest, broodiest, woolliest heifers in the pen. He offers both maternal and performance in a structurally sound package. Just so much good in this bull.

From Bryan and Tracy’s flush cow, the maternal power in this guy was exceptional. They showed a full brother with good success and 134K fit that mold. He had my picture of an ideal angus head. There was a lot to like about him, but he developed an abscess right beside his testicles and we lost him after his first breeding season.

HEIFER BULL

One of my favourites in the pen from an extremely nice cow, who unfortunately turned up open after this raising this bull. A maternal brother went to Larry Macnab and exhibited very well in his dispersal as a three-year old. This bull has oodles of style, moderate frame, and great thickness and hair. Really like him a lot.

A nice balanced son from a solid cow. His mother is a Lavender Lady, which has been extremely prolific here, with many great Lavender Lady’s working hard in our herd.

Really nice bull, extremely long, a lot of performance. His mother has been an Elite Dam since 2023. She is extremely nice and has been raising good solid calves year after year. Don’t miss this one.

His mother is a nice, broody Jackson daughter that adds middle and depth to her progeny. This bull fits that mould with lots of performance as well.

Here is Nikki’s favourite bull in the offering. Another bull with Density on the top and bottom of the pedigree and it really works. 108 has a lot that works for him in a moderate package. He’s solid footed, structurally correct and ready to go to work. He is balanced on all fronts with extra wooly hair.

Nice moderate bull that is exceptionally square made. There is a very good Stoney mom behind him whose grandmother is 37B that has a bull in the sale also. Quite like this guy.

Another square and even made bull. His dam in a nice Jackson cow that has done a good job. She’s a Lavender Lady from 112B who is still here producing calves and has done very well for us. The 26T Density females were second to none for female productivity and longevity.

Purchased from Leif and Melissa Brost at Hawkeye Ranching, a son of our 107 bull who did very well for Leif and Graham at Bone Creek Angus. 60K had extreme performance as a yearling, big topped with a massive hip. He’s done well for us, growing into a nice, powerful bull.

From a ‘Z’ cow who is still here and looks remarkably younger than her actual age. Lots of longevity in this pedigree as the grandma also lasted forever, with perfect feet and udders on both. Check this bull out as one who will add dollars to your bottom line with less culls and more hardworking cattle.

Another 60K from a very nice Lucky Sevens cow. She’s raised some good bulls and is extremely good-uddered and footed, which is the norm among the Lucky Seven cows.
