WELCOME Welcome to the Johnson Livestock Fall celebration of Angus. After running our successful female sale the last four years, we needed a breather. We are also looking forward to adding the majority of our 180 bred purebred heifers back into the herd for a change. With those extra heifers, as well as our expanding commercial herd we plan to calve out over 1200 females next spring. When we look at the premiums our Angus calves continue to bring in, it’s sure not hard to be enthused. Everyday on the market, the black steers and heifers continue to be the highlight, often being the only cattle mentioned. D & N Livestock once again sold several liner loads of steer calves (brothers to their sale heifers) at just under $1600, on a February delivery, to the same customer, for the fourth year. The demand for these top cut Angus cattle just continues to grow. With having sold females for the last four years and a number went to repeat customers, we have had some inquiries about purchasing a few again this year. Although we will not be advertising them other than here, we will have a package of bred heifers and young cows available by private treaty if there is interest. The heifers are bred to Final Answer and Rainfall and will be available in December. With lots of moisture this fall, we have been able to take advantage of the extra grass and won’t have them home until then. The pairs we have featured throughout the magazine are just a sample of what customers viewed going through our herd in September. These cattle are just in their natural condition, doing what they do best. We believe that these cattle exhibit the depth, thickness and easy fleshing performance that are in demand today. This is our favourite part in raising cattle, just witnessing these Angus cows doing what they do best. In Agriculture today there is a lot of talk about the need to tell our story. Agriculture is under a lot of pressure from those that

are several generations removed from it and don’t understand what it takes to be a be involved in the industry. With that said, I have always enjoyed learning producers stories whenever they are told, whether it is in the breeders of the year awards or the young farmers competitions. With that in mind we selected several families that we have admired and had them tell their story. In truth, we could have filled several magazines with these types of write-ups as we have many customers that are passionate about what they do. Although JL is not hosting a sale this year, D & N Livestock, who we work closely with, are continuing to hold the Fall Commercial portion of the Female Sale. Once again Dave and his crew have put together 300 straight Angus commercial bred heifers, with a set of pedigrees that would put most registered cattle to shame. The work and effort the the D & N family put into these cattle is unmatched, and they will back them the same way that we do here at Johnson Livestock. The sale will be held in D & N Livestock’s new barn, as they continue to invest in their operation. The TLC ranch joined our sale last year with a set of JL Angus influenced cattle, that we have had great feedback on. Warren and family are true cattleman with a focused breeding vision and always up for a cattle visit. Give him a call and a chance to explain his vision, it will be well worth your time. Once again we plan to hold our annual bull sale on the ranch at Peebles, Thursday, March 19, 2020. It will feature the largest group of President sons to sell in Canada this year. As always there will be lots of Four Seasons, Rito 1439 and Renowns again. Also new will be Rainfall, Rain Dance and Southern Charm. One new feature for 2020 will be our first June bull sale. This new sale will be our young bull calves as well as a set of two year old bulls. More details on this sale will be finalized in the new year.

D & N Livestock D & N Livestock was formed in 2003 when Dave and Terri Rajotte and their now three boys, joined Terri’s parents, Neil and Agnes Kerslake, on their farm three miles south of Peebles, Saskatchewan. Dave had been working on the family farm (Green Belt Farms) where he had grown up at Wainwright, Alberta. Green Belt had a large dairy, poultry, beef cows, crop land and a feed mill. In 2002 an opportunity came up near his inlaws for three quarters of pasture land. So in 2003 the family moved to Peebles, bringing 300 ewes to add to Neil and Agnes’ mixed farm. The sheep flock grew to 700 head before being dispersed in 2007. They have continued to expand their land base to a current 9,600 acres, with around 1,500 acres in corn for grazing and silage, 1,000 acres in canola and cereals and the balance in hay and pasture. D & N are committed to improving the land, working with Ducks Unlimited to create wetlands to encourage more diversity in the pastures.

They have taken the initial herd of 175 crossbred cows to 1000 high-percentage Angus cows. They are bred straight AI to highly proven Angus bulls in the first cycle and in the last few years have used sexed heifer semen to develop even more females. The cow herd and bred heifers are heavily influenced by EXT, Sitz Alliance, Net Worth, Density, Resource, Renown, Bismark and Final Answer. All cows get an Estrous Alert sticker on day one and are bred on natural heat detection for a period of 21 days. The main cow herd of 1000 cows graze year round. They begin calving April 20, at which time they bale graze and run on left over grass. Moving into the tame pastures around June 1, they rotate through quarters until they arrive near home for a 21 day AI period near the end of June. In the fall, they graze on their own stubble as well as having agreements with several neighbours to graze theirs, often into December. After that, the cows go into 250 acres of corn, where they stay until April 1.
In 2019, 780 heifers have been bred through a 21 day AI natural bred cycle. AI sires used this year are Rainfall, Bismark and JL Prefer. Topend Angus bulls are then run for 42 days and the heifers ultrasounded in early September. This year the sale will offer 300 bred heifers from this group. D & N offer to buy back all future heifer calves out of those heifers. D & N will pay steer price on all future heifer calves, providing acceptable straight Angus bulls are used. Steer calves are backgrounded until early spring and then sold in semi load lots. They feel that being able to sell all steers in large weight groups has added a lot of value to their sales. With often 400 steers, all bred the same way with similar appearances, it really attracts a lot of interest at sale time. In an effort to expand marketing, D & N became EU certified in 2019. In 2016 D & N Livestock began participating in the Canadian Angus CAIPP program
(Commercial Angus Identification and Performance Program). Dave has always kept detailed records on all his cows and believes that it is easier to improve if records are kept. The CAIPP program was a natural fit and going into the future, D & N looks forward to having all the indexes and data that purebred breeders have had available to them. D & N markets several hundred bred heifers each year and now every heifer comes with at least two to three generations of Angus pedigree, so their new owners know exactly what they’re getting. D & N Livestock were awarded the Saskatchewan Angus Commercial Producer of the Year Award in 2016.

Shared Values by Annemarie Pedersen
Jarod and Brittany Berglund met while attending Olds College, when both were competing in rodeo there. They graduated with Agriculture Business and Agriculture Production diplomas, respectively. Both had been in a light horse 4-H club as kids, but Brittany had grown up on a buffalo ranch in Grande Prairie, Alberta. She moved to Kennedy, Saskatchewan when they married in 2009 and began farming together. Today the Berglunds are farming Jarod’s parents’ land, down the road from his sister Jody’s farm and not far from his parents who are still involved with the farm. He runs a multifaceted oilfield service company that pushes snow in the winter, has a steam truck for thawing lines and a panel business used to keep cattle away from the pump jacks and they have three little boys - Tucker 6, Clyde 4 and Luke 2. The mixed farm includes about 3500 acres of crops like oats, barley and canola and a commercial cow-calf herd of primarily Angus, with some Hereford influences. The busy farmer has made a major shift in the feed they produce on farm for their cattle. “We
have switched from growing hay to barley silage. Growing up we used to bale from June 1 to October 1 but now we can put up enough feed for the year in three or four days with the silage,” he said. The Berglunds calve in April and May, will background over the winter and sell steers in the spring. So having a good source of feed is important. The Berglunds are focusing on building their cattle herd and the primarily Black Angus bulls they buy are chosen because they produce good females, that have key traits like good feet, good udders and uniformity. They started going to the Johnson’s bull sale about five years ago because they were local, but didn’t buy from them consistently until they had an issue with a bull that hadn’t been delivered yet. “The way they guarantee their bulls is pretty special. They have great bulls but more than anything, they have great customer service. If they are going to take care of me that well, I will keep coming back. I know I am looked after. Good people, good values and I like to do business with people like that,” said Jarod. PAGE 29

The Anthony’s Mixed Farming Operation is Pure Angus by Annemarie Pedersen
The Anthony family has been farming in Mankota, Saskatchewan since Lee’s grandfather moved to the area in 1944. His Dad, Vernon, has farmed there for over 50 years and about 26 years ago, Lee and his wife Nancy, started buying land and entered the family business. The Anthonys have about 3,000 acres of land in crops like lentils, peas, durum wheat and barley, but not all the land in their southwest Saskatchewan operation is suitable for crops. Today, they have about a 180 head cow-calf operation to make the most of that challenging landscape. A dispersal of their older cows in 2014 brought the herd down to a manageable size for Lee and his father and while the sales were good, it has taken time to get back to a mix Lee likes. “It takes a lot of culling to get things to where you like it. There’s no second chances for the animals that aren’t performing in their operation,” he says.

Lee prefers all Black Angus cattle. “They are easier calvers, the calves get up and start sucking as soon as they hit the ground, you don’t have to worry about them. They have a good temperament and don’t need a lot of attention,” he says. In 2011, Lee attended his first bull sale at Johnson Livestock and said he hasn’t bought a bull from anyone else since. “They stand behind their bulls and have been great to deal with if there’s ever an issue.” The work Lee has done to get the right mix with Johnson’s bulls and their own female stock, means his animals are suited for challenging weather conditions including drought and cold winters. He generally puts the bulls out with the heifers for 30 days in June or July and then covers the cows. They are calving the heifers at the end of March and the cows start in early April. They background the steers until
spring and sell the majority of the animals to an operation in Ontario in April. The winter grazing program is meant to be low maintenance and lower cost. The herd grazes until about Christmas, are put on standing corn for a few months and then they may feed bales for a few months before calving. The results speak for themselves. “We try to keep the work down and the cows really look good when they come off that,� says Lee.
While their three children, Wyatt 15, Lexi 14 and Josie 11, might be a bit young yet to say if they will be the fourth generation to work on the farm, their son has already started helping out. The work the Anthonys are doing to build a herd that works for their operation, regional conditions and management style is setting the stage for success in the future.

Ingredients: • 1½ lbs. (750 g) Extra Lean or Lean Ground Round or Chuck • 1 egg, beaten • 1 cup (250 mL) shredded Canadian Cheddar cheese • ⅓ cup (75 mL) finely shredded onion (1 small) • ¼ cup (50 mL) dry bread crumbs • 2 tbsp (30 mL) EACH burger relish and prepared mustard • ¼ tsp (1 mL) EACH salt and pepper • ½ cup (125 mL) ketchup Directions: • Combine beef, egg, ½ cup (125 mL) of the cheese, onion, bread crumbs, relish, mustard, salt and pepper. Mix lightly but thoroughly to blend. • Lightly spray 12 muffin or custard cups with cooking spray. Divide mixture among cups; make indentation in centre of each with back of spoon. Fill indentations with ketchup. Sprinkle each with remaining cheese, dividing equally. • Bake in 375°F (190°C) oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until digital rapid-read thermometer inserted into meat portion of EACH reads 160°F (71°C).

TLC Ranch Warren and Lenamarie McNary started TLC Ranch in the Great Sandhills area northwest of Tompkins in 1993. We have worked together with our four children as they grew up and have had very little hired help. Our oldest daughter, Grace, is married to Chance and in the fall of 2019 they are moving to the east ranch to start their ranching career. Our second oldest, Bess, lives in our old yardsite and works full time with us. Tyler lives and carpenters in Swift Current and helps on weekends and our youngest daughter Sarah is studying Agricultural Mechanics at Olds College and is an integral part of the ranch. As the ranch grew, we were looking for a smaller, more feed efficient cow suited to our dryland conditions, that would take very little care and yet still produced a good, marketable calf that performed well in the feedlot. We wanted cows that looked after themselves, calved by themselves and needed very little labour input. Over time and experimentation, we settled on Angus/ Longhorn cross cows, bred back to power

beef bulls. At this time we breed around 1000 head each year including up to 300 heifers, selling up to 250 young bred cows in fall and calve around 700 head, including the heifers. We grass most of our steers and cull heifers for finishing and do it all with very little extra help. The program begins with a herd of large framed, mostly solid colored pure Longhorn cows weighing around 1100 lbs., bred to purebred, solid colored, beefy Longhorn bulls. From this herd we raise most of the heifers that go into the cross breeding program. A few purebred heifers are purchased from other reputable Longhorn breeders. The main herd of Longhorn cows are then bred entirely to JL Angus bulls. We work with Dave and Andrew to choose maternal bloodlines that will produce the type of females that will work best in a low input, low labour program. From JL we are able to package together enough related bulls of the same style to give us an even calf crop. These
cows are pasture bred for 45 days, July 15 to September 30 and average 95% conception at preg test time. They winter on native grass with an average of 15 lbs. supplemental feed for around 100 days, calve unassisted and unobserved from April 20 to about June 15. Live calf survival averages over 95% and around 90% of the cows calve on the first cycle. The first time the calves are touched is branding day, around June 22, when they receive two vaccines, buttons, tags, brand, castration and any horns are burnt. Cows are vaccinated, ivomec’d and culled at this time. About half of the calves are born polled and about a quarter just have little buttons. Most are solid black, with a few reds, brockles, line backs or speckled. From these half blood calves the best bull calves are kept intact and are sold as yearlings or two year olds as heifer bulls. We sort out the best heifers to breed for range cows. These are bred the first time to our own halfblood bulls and we calve them ourselves, then breed them back to JL bulls for their second calf. These
young cows are offered for sale at the ranch by private treaty in late fall after preg testing. Breedback on these first calvers usually runs around 95% and has been over 97%. They are now ready to go into any breeding program. We have had excellent results with both Angus and polled black Simmental bulls on these cows. Hybrid Vigor plays a big part in the performance of these cows and their calves. These half blood cows grow out to around 1250 lbs. average size at four years of age, have excellent tucked up udders and small, evenly spaced teats that stay that way for their whole life. They have very good feet and hooves, large pelvic area, excellent mothering instincts, smaller vigorous calves, quiet temperament, high fertility and are very efficient foragers and feed converters. We finish a lot of our calves and they gain well in the feedlot, convert feed in the low 5:1 range and grade very well, with a high percentage making AAA YG1. Continued on page 25

From these halfblood cows that were bred back to good maternal JL bulls we kept some of the best quarter Longhorn heifers and with the help of Dave and Andrew chose some good low birth weight JL bulls to breed them to. In 2018 we sold these heifers in the Johnson Livestock Fall Female Sale. Of 54 heifers that were sold, they had over a 96% conception rate. There will be nearly 20 of these heifers available to be bought this fall as well. They have been bred to the same heifer bull that was used on last year’s package of heifers. The Angus gives these cattle the beef, hair coat, growth and size we need and the desirable carcass and loin that the packers want. The Longhorn in them contributes increased fertility, longevity, docility, mothering instincts, feed efficiency and adds marbling to the carcass. This year we have over 60 of our black halfblood, two year olds for sale. They weaned their first calf in the fall and were bred back to good Angus bulls in two cycles. They are very fertile, with their bred heifer conception rates being 93%. Out of over
120 bred heifers, only four needed help calving: over 96% of them had their first calf completely unassisted. We attribute that to the large pelvic area that they get from the Longhorn side. They should begin calving around April 25 and finish around June 10, with the vast majority of them calving in the first three weeks. As well as two year olds, we have over 90 mature halfblood cows available, ranging from three years to seven years. These cows have proven themselves to be excellent mothers. They are mid sized, good ranchy cows that consistently wean impressive calves. In the fall of 2018 we sold the ¾ Angus ¼ Longhorn steers from these cows at five months old; they averaged 521 lbs. with some of them tipping the scales at nearly 600 lbs. JL Crushmaid 5141 and her son by President, JL Profit 9147 The Crushmaid cow family is known around here as small, heavy producing cows that just stick around. The founder, 5007, is still here at soon to be 15 years of age and every one of her six daughter is as well. With three of them being Elite, including 5141’s dam. Crushmaid 5141 herself sports a WW ratio of 120 on her first three calves and this year’s son is the right kind. With a low birth weight, this President son has all kinds of thickness and muscle and will sell as Lot 147 in the spring. PAGE 45
JL Tibbie 3514 and her son by President, JL President 9148 Tibbie 3514 is our oldest Rito 1439 daughter and one of the big reasons we continue to heavily use Rito 1439 naturally. We have never collected semen on old Rito 1439 but he has natural sired over 333 registered calves so far to date and we are planning on using him for awhile yet. Tibbie 3514 has been designated an Elite dam already and it shows up in this year’s President son. He sells as Lot 148 in the spring sale. This years son by Renown will sell as Lot 127 in the next sale. A full brother sold to D & N two years ago and is one of the feature sires in D & N’s impressive JL sire group. JL Lady 0116 and her son by President, JL Prime Minister 9018 Our Lady family stems from the very first registered cow we purchased in 2003, Lady 779L. She continued to produce here until last year when she came up open and was culled at 18 years of age. Lady 0116 is one of many granddaughters and has a WW ratio of 107 over her eight calves. This year’s son will sell as Lot 18 and with a 85 lb. BW and the power he carries, he will standout.

Foressa 8214 was on the cover last year and has likely raised her best Renown son to date but it’s time for her daughter to take over as our model. 4060 is a low BW, Eliminator daughter who is just starting to excel. This son by President has a negative BW, balanced with a WW ratio of 113 and will sell as Lot 189 in the spring.

This great cow has weaned off 12 calves to date, with nine of her daughters working either in our herd or other registered herds. Her two previous sons have sold to the great TLC Ranch and Hummock Springs Ranch. This President son, selling as Lot 64 in the spring JL sale, is her best to date, although, we will be counting on her for many more.

Henrietta 17’05 and her son by President, JL Counselor 9050 Another matriarch of the herd, as she has put exactly 30 Henrietta females into the herd, with all the daughters, granddaughters, etc. She is a designated Elite dam with 13 calves indexing 107. In her fourteenth year she raised a herd bull that started life at a modest 81 lbs. and topped 800 lbs. at 205 day. This President son will sell as Lot 50 in the spring JL sale.

Starting From Scratch by Annemarie Pedersen
Not far from Grande-Clairière, in southwest Manitoba, Devon and Heather Bertholet are building a purebred Angus operation from the ground up. They moved to the current farmstead in 2016 and started building – a combination calving barn and sale barn, a shop, corrals and a new house in 2017. While neither grew up involved in livestock production, both Devon and Heather’s families grew crops, as well as forage and hay for sale. But the next generation has made the beef operation central to their farming business and they put up all of the feed they need for the year, purchasing only the minerals and nutrient supplements. But cattle ranching wasn’t really in the plan originally. Devon worked on the oil rigs and Heather was a nurse, so there was a lot of shift work. When the rig work slowed down Devon found work on a cow-calf and feeder operation and really enjoyed it. That experience started the Bertholet herd, when he bought four cows from the ranch. Four

turned into 15 head but Devon went back to the oil patch. Heather was still nursing and then their first baby arrived and they realized there wasn’t enough time to do it all. It came down to a choice between the rigs and the cows and the cows won. At the time they didn’t have any of their own land but Devon’s grandfather was selling his property – they decided to jump in with both feet. “It’s an investment... It’s land and they’re not making any more of it,” reasoned Heather. Today they farm about 7000 acres, but in the competitive land market in the area, they rent a majority of that, owning about 2500 acres. Around 2014 they expanded their herd and purchased about 70 bred heifers from Dave Rajotte of D & N Livestock. That connection led to a relationship with Johnson Livestock. “Dave lives only a few miles from Andrew and Laurie and he contributes the commercial heifers for the Johnson’s Female Sale. That’s
how we first came to know Andrew and Laurie. And now we buy heifers from Dave and our bulls from Johnsons.” Heather said working with the Johnsons was a great experience. “The first year we weren’t able to attend the sale and bought two bulls over the phone with Andrew. We were new to this; if I had questions I could give Andrew a call and he was always willing to help us out.” In just a short amount of time, the Bertholets have made a large investment in a growing enterprise including their own spring bull sale and a fall female sale in December. But of course there is always more to do and the latest goal for their ranch is to focus on the purebred program. Today they have 500 head of purebred and commercial cattle – and almost everything is Angus with a large amount of Johnson Livestock genetics in their herd. Devon likes working with Angus cattle and Heather
recognizes the high consumer demand for and perceptions about, Angus beef. “Whether you go into McDonald’s or a high-end restaurant, you see Angus beef on the menu!” Despite the long hours during peak seasons like calving, Heather feels they made the right decision. “I really enjoy this life. I love being home every day with the kids – Griffin 9, Fergie 7, Finley 5 and Beau 6 months. The kids love helping out and love the bull sale. We are all working together and Devon is really happy to be building something to hand down to his kids.” Heather’s last word is for the support they received as newcomers to the business. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without the help of other producers.” And Devon agrees. “I can’t emphasize enough what a pleasure it is to work in an industry where someone is willing to not only share their own mistakes but also their knowledge and expertise.”
