BY ROXANE LIEVERSE

CFP, MBA, LLM Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Simmental Association There’s something special about the arrival of fall — cooler temperatures, the first snowflakes, and the chance to see the fruits of our labour as calves return home from pasture. Fall has also always been a season I love for strategic thinking and planning for the winter ahead; it truly is the planning season. For many of you, that means bringing in the harvest, collecting DNA, registering the last of the calves, and planning for the upcoming calving season. The last few months have been particularly busy at the CSA office. The DigitalFirst approach has started rolling out, opening the door to so many member discussions. Community engagement is high, and that’s a positive sign. Our members show strong ownership of their association and the way we operate, driven ultimately by a passion for the breed. Feedback is key, and we want to hear it. We won’t get it right every time, but we’re striving to strike the right balance between digital adoption and keeping members connected to the office. Don’t hesitate to reach out — we’re always glad to hear from you. With the AGM and a successful National Classic behind us, I’ve had time to continue connecting with members and the industry — and that same hospitality has followed me through the summer, thanks to so many members who have hosted me over the past several months. Thank you

6

to the Horner family, and everyone who attended the Manitoba AGM; it was an amazing event with great cattle, and I especially loved the format of the pen show. Thank you as well to the MC Rich family for hosting me on a pasture tour in early August. My goal has been to meet as many members as possible and build a communication system that lets members share feedback with the CSA directly. Thank you to everyone who has opened their doors to me over the last several months. I also had the opportunity to attend the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef AGM, where I gained a better understanding of the programming available to producers and how the total balance approach will improve our food system nationally, from farm to fork. From there, I attended the Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Winnipeg, where our very own Olivia Woytiuk was accepted into the Canadian Young Leaders Program — a huge honour, and one that speaks well of the future of our industry. While at the conference, I met with a number of trade officials and came away reaffirmed in how important trade certainty is to our business. Discussions were held on EU semen and embryo imports, with direction provided to the federal government on how to improve this process for Canadian exporters. I also had the chance to meet with several foreign trade delegates who are navigating these same uncertain times alongside us.

Most recently, I had the opportunity to attend the ASA Fall Focus in Bozeman, MT, where I sat in on a number of committee meetings and was invited to speak to the Board. Once again, I reaffirmed the importance of trade and the cross-border flow of our animals. The partnership between the ASA and CSA remains strong, but more importantly, so does the partnership among breeders on both sides of the border. Many individuals took the time to share how important our trade relationship is to their operations, and beyond trade, the personal relationships they’ve built with Canadians over the years. These are certainly difficult times, but those relationships remain strong. Looking ahead, and in the theme of planning season, staff at the CSA are working hard on finalizing the implementation plan for some exciting changes around Simmental Country. In 2027, Simmental Country is heading for a material redesign. After several years of success with Commercial Country, the CSA Board and Promotion Committees have decided to help us return to our roots and consolidate both Simmental Country and Commercial Country under one banner, going back to the Simmental Country name. It will carry the same great content, but will leverage the distribution of Commercial Country’s 10,000+ subscribers and its commercial ethos. This will also mean reducing the total number of issues to five, versus the current seven combined. These changes are leadership in action. We are Simmental proud, and we know our commercial distribution network values the pedigree now more than ever — so let’s keep it front of mind for commercial buyers, with more issues of Simmental Country on their tables. As I look back on these last few months, the thread running through all of it is planning with purpose. Fall reminds us to prepare for what’s ahead, DigitalFirst is reshaping how we connect and communicate, the visits and conferences have reinforced how much strength lies in our relationships — with each other and with our trading partners — and the evolution of Simmental Country reflects an association willing to plan boldly for the long term. None of these are separate stories; they’re all part of the same one: a community that plans deliberately, shows up for each other, and builds its future with intention. I’m grateful to be part of it, and I look forward to what the rest of this planning season brings.

CANADIAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION

BREED IMPROVEMENT API AND TI UPDATES BY SEAN MCGRATH Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association

What is a Selection Index? Hopefully readers are familiar with the All Purpose and Terminal Indexes (API, TI) produced by IGS and published by the Canadian Simmental Association. These selection indexes express differences in genetic merit within specific production systems and use the overall economics of the respective system to appropriately weight the available genetic traits in the index. Recently the API and TI have undergone some major updates and revisions to better account for these differences and create a more powerful tool for breeders. In essence a selection index accounts for the trade-offs in the system. For example, an increase in carcass weight may increase revenues, but also results in an increased cost of feed.

The Systems Firstly, it is important to understand the context in which the API and TI are calculated. The API or All-Purpose Index uses a base cowherd of 500 Angus based cows. Simmental and Simmental Influenced genetics are used on the cowherd on a fixed land base and replacement females are kept from those matings. Animals that are not used as replacements are placed on feed and marketed on a carcass grid endpoint. The API evaluates revenues and costs from that system to produce values for relative profit or API. This scenario is modelled over a 50-year time horizon. The TI or Terminal Index uses the same base cowherd, however in this case no replacements are kept. All offspring are placed on feed and marketed through a carcass grid endpoint. Again, revenues and costs are both accounted for in the model. The TI is modelled over a 2-year time horizon. If you are keeping replacements, then API is the appropriate index to use for selection. If all calves are being placed on feed, then TI is the proper selection tool.

Changes Since API and TI were originally developed, there have been several new additions to the IGS genetic evaluation. Many of these additions include cost traits such as dry matter intake but also traits such as heifer pregnancy and mature size. Additionally, carcass weight is now directly included in the modelling. The inclusion of additional EPD in the calculation of the index values results in a more accurate modelling of the system and thus a more informative index. Previously, the index calculations had to rely on relationships between associated traits and did not account for curve benders and

8

outliers as appropriately. Table 1 shows the comparison of traits included in the current API and TI vs. the updated version. Table 1. Traits included in the current API and TI index compared to the traits included in the New API (API New) and TI (TI New) API

The current population average API is 277.1 and TI is 160.6. These values were formerly 112.3 and 73.0. This does not change the index, it just places the average index value at a different point.

The economic parameters of the indexes were also freshly modelled using updated industry information. The API was simulation was modelled out for 50 years, while the TI was modelled over 2 years. These updates use advanced simulation tools to better account for genetic and environmental variation. Work shows that even though things like the price of calves may change, the economic relationships between costs and income are quite robust and animal rankings remain relatively consistent over time. One of the other major changes to the index values is the ability to better account for heterosis effects based on the breed combinations or percentage Simmental in the crosses. Heterosis increases with more divergent breed combinations, so emphasis on traits more highly impacted by heterosis can be adjusted to optimize overall system profitability. This was done by categorizing Simmental genetics that are used across the Angus cowherd in the simulations. Relative emphasis of the index traits is shown for sample groups of 50 and 100% Simmental genetics. In practice the relative emphasis is smoothed by using 10% denominations. The other change that is immediately noticeable is that the average index value is quite different.

Conclusions API and TI are powerful and robust selection tools that consider both revenue and cost components of their respective production systems. The new updates include advanced science, new EPD that better account for the genetic components of the productions system, modern economics, improved accounting for heterosis and state of the art simulation that that improves upon an already robust selection tool. As part of these changes, we will see some animals reranked in the population. This does not mean that previous versions of the indexes were wrong, rather it should be stated that the new tools incorporate better information and updated science to improve on an already existing tool. Look for the new API and TI values to arrive later this fall.

Recognizing the Roll of Women in Agriculture The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer, and what better person to celebrate than Jennie Mutch! Jennie leads with f ierce integrity, genuine kindness, and an unwavering willingness to learn. Her leadership is rooted in her ability to bring people together, lead by example, and make those around her feel valued and supported.

Jennie Mutch

Jennie’s story is a reminder that great leadership is about more than the positions we hold. It’s about the people we encourage, the knowledge we share, and the legacy we leave behind. Jennie has been part of the CSA’s story just as much as we’ve been part of hers, and we’re proud to celebrate her as part of the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

She embodies the strength, dedication, and passion that women bring to agriculture and the cattle industry. As we sat down with Jennie for an interview, we knew the Canadian Simmental Association had played a signif icant role in her life. What we didn’t fully realize was just how signif icant a role she has played in the CSA’s journey too. From her early involvement in the YCSA program, serving on both provincial and national boards, to completing two full terms on the CSA National Board (2020–2026) and serving as President in 2025. Beyond her leadership within the association, Jennie raises purebred Simmental cattle alongside her husband and two children in Earnscliffe, PEI.

Recognizing the Roll of Women in Agriculture Karen Skeels spends most of her days quietly going about the business of working with family members to raise good quality purebred Simmental and Flechvieh cattle on what is now a fourth generation family farm in west central Alberta. But when she’s not working with cattle, or involved with community and agriculture industry organizations and events, she gladly takes a few moments to share a very passionate and heartfelt message about what a joy it is just to be working in agriculture, and the honor it has been with working with amazing people over the years who have served as role models and mentors to her. “I just love this industry and I am very passionate about agriculture

— I think a person needs to be,” says Skeels who along with her husband Dan and family members own and operate Anchor D Simmentals near Rimbey, about an hour northwest of Red Deer, AB. “I think it is so important too that we communicate with the non-farming community, and share our story. What we do on a daily basis is all about feeding the world. And that’s important. Even in small communities these days, most people are not directly connected to agriculture so we need to get our story out.” Skeels says there are several messages to communicate. One is about the work and commitment of farmers and ranchers in producing food and looking after the environment. While another important message is recognizing

Ka re n a n d h e r h u s b a n d D a n

the contribution of women in agriculture. “On our farm for example gender is not an issue,” she says. “We just work as a team, everyone pitches in and does what needs to be done. Not every job is glamourous by any means, but you just get it done. But at the same time as I look at my career in agriculture, I have to recognize some amazing women who inspired me and served as mentors.” Among those who played an important role were women such as Joyce Muller and Ruth Jaburek who were part of their own farming operations raising purebred Flechveih cattle. “And my own mother-in-law Joyce Skeels continues to be a role model,” says Karen. “She is still actively involved in day-to-day operations. At 80 years of age she is still baling hay and feeding silage in winter. She has been a ginormous mentor in my life.” Skeels is also proud of her own daughter Mackenzie and daughter-in-law Trinity who are independent and resourceful young women also actively involved in the family farm, and passionate about agriculture. “It is just so inspiring to see women involved in this industry and you see so many who seem to thrive in situations which are not always easy, but they just push ahead and do it. So we also need to recognize the efforts of women in agriculture who contribute so much to this industry.” RAISED NEAR PONOKA

Skeels was born in Calgary, but raised in Ponoka as her parents established a f irst-generation farming operation producing commercial cattle, but also raising horses. “I grew up on the farm and always loved agriculture and 12

was particularly passionate about horses,” she says. “As a kid growing up in the 1970s I learned a lot about agriculture. I learned to ride and later was involved in show jumping.” She became a member of the Equestrian Canada’s Continental Young Riders and represented Canada at international show jumping events.

“This farm is a team effort,” says Karen. “Everyone is involved and we all work at it together.” The farm operates over about 3,500 acres of both deeded and rented land. They crop about 500 acres

In the early 1990s she was involved with the Ponoka Stampede and was named Miss Ponoka Stampede in 1992. She also competed in the Miss Rodeo Canada event where she won the horsemanship competition. While later working at the Ponoka Auction Mart (VJV Ponoka), Karen met the young Dan Skeels. They were married in 1995 and she joined the Skeels family farming operation near Rimbey. The

Skeels farm which was founded in 1937 raised commercial beef cattle for many years. Dan’s parents, Delmer and Joyce Skeels bought their f irst Simmental bull in 1975. Dan bought his f irst registered Flechvieh cattle in 1981 which

Along with Dan and Karen and Dan’s mom who is still actively involved in the farm, the principals of Anchor D Simmental include their daughter Mackenzie Skeels Rudnik and her husband Corey Rudnik, and son Garren and his wife Trinity. The rest of the land is used for pasture, which is in close proximity to the home place. “Any land that isn’t suited to crop production is well suited to beef production,” says Karen. “A grazing animal is an important part of our ecosystem.” Along with raising Simmental cattle, family members also have off-farm careers and activities. her mother’s footsteps and was named Miss Ponoka Stampede in 2022 and also Miss Rodeo Canada in 2023. She is involved in the dayto-day activities at the farm and also works for DLMS. Garren plays an active role in the day-to-day operations of the farm working with cattle management, feeding, breeding decisions and sales preparation. He and Trinity also show cattle at various shows during the fall. Garren also works off farm as ringman and sales consultant at spring bull sales, and he is also serving as a director of the Fullblood Flechvieh Federation this year. Mackenzie and Garren were involved in livestock shows and organizations f rom an early age. Both were involved in 4-H beef clubs and were also members in the Young Canadian Simmental Association for several years, holding positions on both the provincial and national YCSA boards. “It is important for young people to be involved in these organizations,” says Karen. “It helps them learn about cattle and the beef industry but is also a good opportunity to talk with other young people who are involved in agriculture and share the same values. It is a great opportunity 14

to develop connections that will serve them well in future years.” CALVING IN DECEMBER

The Anchor D cow herd begins calving in December with the timing geared so that calving is done by the time Dan needs to hit the road in late February to provide auctioneer services at spring bull sales. Anchor D also has their own annual bull sale at the farm in February as well. “Throughout the fall and winter we are also preparing for our own bull sale as well,” says Karen. Held on the farm, it is a “live” sale with all cattle shown through the ring. Karen helps co-ordinate material

“We used to do the sale out of the calving barn, that meant everything had to been cleaned out to make room for sale set up, and then put everything back,” says Karen. “And some years we were dealing with almost -40C temperatures and we had to have all this done within 24 hours. Now we have a dedicated sale barn that makes everything so much simpler.” While sale day is a lot of work, she says she loves it. “It’s a great day to meet our customers and I love to feed people. It is a great day of fellowship and it’s our way or showing our appreciation for their support. It is a very cool day.” With calving completed and the bull sale over, breeding season for the herd begins in mid-March. Everything is bred at home before cattle move out to pasture usually in late May.

“All hands are on deck over the calving season, but f rom midFebruary to April then Dan and Mackenzie and Garren have other work to attend to, so I sort of become the lead hand at that time of year,” says Karen. “We’ve used it for the past three years and we feel it makes a difference in reducing weaning stress in calves,” she says.

operation. In 2024 the farm hosted delegates attending the World Simmental Flechvieh Congress which was held in Alberta that year. They provided a meal and described their production system. During that visit the Anchor D Ranch as well as Double Bar D Farms of Grenfell Sask. were awarded the prestigious World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) Golden Book Award. It is an international honor given to individuals and organizations that make major contributions to the development and promotion of Simmental and Simbrah cattle breeds.

Anchor D Simmentals often welcomes visitors to the farm for a look at their purebred beef

“Morgan is f ine young woman and all three of these workers are passionate about agriculture, they complement our overall team so well. Once we get into late spring and summer it’s a good time to attend to general maintenance and work on projects that make the farm better.” On pasture for the summer, the calves are weaned by early September. Anchor D has been certif ied under the Verif ied Beef Production (VBP) program. That involves keeping records of production practices. The farm has also completed an Environmental Farm Plan. “It is important for us follow proper environmental practices and be good stewards of the land,” says Karen. “And we also believe in humane production practices as well.” In recent years for the example, weaning has involved treating calves with a hormonal

The top bull calves will be retained for future bull sales, while the top heifers will be marketed in the fall as bred-heifers. And it is not long after the production sale before it’s calving season again. Also during the fall, Anchor D has for the past 15 years helped some of their customers market cattle by organizing Anchor D-influenced calf sales. These are calves raised by commercial producers who use Anchor D genetics as part of their cross-breeding programs. The October sales that have been held in Rimbey, Ponoka, Westlock and Dawson Creek, B.C. bring together on average about 3,500 head of calves and as many as 5,000 head depending on the

16

The ranch also hosts groups of producers f rom Australia and New Zealand each July, as well. Karen has also maintained a long-standing involvement as a volunteer with the Ponoka

Stampede over the years, mostly involved with the alumni of the Miss Ponoka Stampede competition. With the Stampede adopting an annual theme, the theme for 2026 was the Year of the Cowgirl. As part of the event many members of the alumni were on hand and rode in the Stampede parade. As well, Karen was one of six women selected by the Stampede who were recognized as a cowgirl of the year. “It was a great honor, with each one of us having our own day of recognition at the Stampede” she says. “They made a video presentation of each of us that was shown during our day. It was pretty cool.” Karen also competed in a stock dog competition at the Stampede known as a Rodear, winning the intermediate category. The Rodear involved her, her horse and one of her border collies herding anywhere f rom three to 10 head of cattle in the arena. “We worked as a team to move these

17

cattle through an obstacle course and then move cattle through panels and chutes and eventually load them onto a trailer as well,” she says. “It was really neat to be involved and one of the best parts was having my family there to cheer me on. Over the years, I have often been the one in the stands cheering on somebody and this year they were there for me.” In other activities over the years she has served as a judge at the International Auctioneering Championship at the Calgary Stampede and earlier on 2026 was a judge at the Canadian Livestock Auctioneer Championship in Swift Current, SK.

18

While ranch life is always busy and sometimes heading off in several different directions at the same time, Karen says it is important to remember what is important and appreciate the little things in life. “One of the most important things we need to do is communicate, not just among our family, but also to the outside world, to share our story,” she says. “We need

to f ind value in what we do, we need to be proud of what we do, we need to help others — I love nothing more than seeing people succeed sometimes when its involved diff icult situations. And we need to stay grounded. Hopefully we can take time to f ind joy in a sunrise as well as in a sunset and appreciate this great industry we are involved in.”

“One of the most important things we need to do is communicate, not just among our family, but also to the outside world, to share our story”

CANADIAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION

VET’S ADVICE BY ROY LEWIS, DVM

IBR VACCINATIONS FOR CATTLE WHAT/WHEN/ WHERE AND WHY? This article is a review for most but is one vaccination we simply don’t want to be without in our herds. One might argue that IBR vaccination next to clostridial disease is one of the most important diseases to vaccinate for purebred or commercial cattle. That is because it is both involved as a primary precursor in the bovine respiratory disease complex. It also could undoubtedly be the most common cause of reproductive loss from an infectious standpoint if we did not vaccinate for it. It also can cause severe upper respiratory disease (tracheitis) in older feedlot cattle, so it is commonly boostered in the feedlot. The issue is when to vaccinate for it and to use killed or live vaccine parental or intranasal vaccines. With the live vaccines there is some risk in causing abortions in naïve pregnant animals or preventing conception if given too close to breeding so lots of unknowns. We as veterinarians need to help you balance this risk with timing of vaccinations. Add into this some purebred herds want to avoid titers so they can export live animals to the EU (European union). This later problem, is only an issue with select herds so we will not tackle that problem but will try and address these other issues other than to say the intranasal IBR vaccines may have a very strong place in these herds for the niche marketing. When setting up these programs for our clients I think we need to adhere to specific points. There is no doubt calves and heifers before breeding should be on a live program. The heifers we can go back far enough to vaccinate. With the cowherd if you want zero tolerance from some potential reproductive loss then the killed vaccines should be looked at. The killed vaccines cost more to produce so are more expensive, immunity may be a bit shorter and ideally should be given before breeding so the immunity lasts through the next pregnancy. The issue is that it can sometimes be hard from a management standpoint, so it is pushed back into pregnancy and if it goes back too far immunity starts to wane during the pregnancy. The ideal time to give the IBR vaccines as boosters in the cowherd is after calving and before breeding. When one thinks of it this is a very small window when we think calving starts and about 2 months later many of you start breeding. One has to separate cows from calves, and most would then vaccinate the herd in two or three batches, which requires more work and organization. I know of many instances where groups or individuals get forgotten. Also the calves are a bit young to start with the parental vaccines at this time. It ends up being too early to vaccinate calves and if wait right before breeding potentially too late to vaccinate the cows. We in the cattle industry are in a quandary. One of the companies that makes a modified live vaccine has done quite a study when using the vaccine right close to breeding. I must qualify this was in heifers that were being protected by a previous vaccination for IBR, so the booster shot technically was given close to calving. With all the modified vaccines I have either seen in practice or heard in the pharmaceutical world abortions from the use of modified live vaccines in pregnancy is reported but this is in totally Naïve animals.

20

There are more and more calves getting proper IBR vaccinations, as it is always present in the multi viral vaccines or with the viral and bacterial pneumonia pathogens. Lots of cows still are missing their annual vaccinations so we need to all stress that and yearly the question is how and when do we give it. If because of management one cannot easily get the cows done after calving and before breeding or you feel vaccination is too close to breeding, then your only time is during pregnancy. This is where the risk reward comes in. The unborn calf has a competent immune system beginning in the last trimester so if one is vaccinating and the previous year the cow was vaccinated a live vaccine should be safe. The big word is should and are their new acquisitions where prior history is unknown plus some cattle don’t develop proper immunity to vaccines. There is some risk in using the modified live vaccines in pregnant cattle, which need to be discussed with your veterinarian. What we all know for sure is that these reproductive risks are rare and far, far outweigh the huge risk the cattle have to both respiratory disease and abortions if the herd is not vaccinated on a yearly basis. This vaccine is one of the core ones in herd vaccinations for all age groups of cattle. If the risk is too high, I am even wondering if some producers may go back in time and start giving the intranasal vaccines to cows like the good old days which is also totally safe. Squeeze chutes today with neck extensions make that pretty doable but still not a fun job and we must remember that whenever we give intranasal vaccines BVD is not included in the mix. We want to get the best combination of vaccines to protect cows, calves’ and bulls and yet have a decent safety outcome. The above illustrates why when purchasing new heifers, bred heifers or bulls it is really important to know their vaccination history. I always stress owners writing a brief health vaccination history in their sales catalogues but if one looks only about 10 % ever do. It is most critical with IBR because it takes some thought to get those new purchases onto your program. Conversely when selling be transparent about what vaccination and management program the cattle are on. There is way way too much risk both reproductively and respiratory wise to not have cattle up to date on vaccines before they leave or enter your yard. Hope weaning goes well or has gone well for everyone this year.

CANADIAN CATTLE ASSOCIATION BY TYLER FULTON

Canadian Cattle Association President

I know that I am not alone in hoping that the worst of the unpredictable and sometimes devastating summer weather is behind us, although the prospect of a long fall and potentially dry and mild winter may bring different but equally difficult challenges. Across the country we have watched in shock and dismay as wildfires and flooding have once again hit cattle producers hard. We are grateful for good warning systems and supports to help evacuate people and livestock safely and efficiently when necessary. The added stresses of extreme weather can take a huge toll on producers, not just financially, but also emotionally and mentally. We don’t talk about this enough as a society in general but there is still a significant amount of stigma in our industry, and I want to stress the importance of self-care and seeking help. If you need mental health support for any reason, please use the resources available: The National Farmer Crisis Line: call 1-866-FARMS01 Suicide Crisis Help Line: call or text 988 or visit https://988.ca The Do More Agriculture Foundation is a national foundation focused on mental health in Canadian agriculture and has links to crisis supports as well as excellent resources for non-urgent issues: www. domore.ag If you haven’t done so recently, reach out to your friends and neighbours and ask them how they are doing. If you recognize signs of struggle or think someone may not be coping with their current circumstances, offer support and connect them with these organizations. We need to take care of ourselves and each other like we take care of our cattle. In addition to extreme weather and threats of tariffs, we have seen increased media attention and producer interest toward Business Risk Management programs, especially AgriStability and to a lesser extent Livestock Price Insurance following the summer federal, provincial and territorial agriculture ministers (FPT) meeting and the subsequent Halifax Statement. For years, Canadian Cattle Association Directors have captured the importance of Business Risk Management (BRM) programs in policies that guide CCA’s advocacy efforts. CCA’s position is that we believe that strong government supports are needed to offset emergency events that disrupt trade or otherwise endanger business continuity and security of the beef cattle industry. In addition to extreme weather, producers face pressure and uncertainty with fluctuations in energy costs, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitics. 22

For Budget 2026, CCA submitted a recommendation to include Livestock Price Insurance in Canada’s business risk management suite with government cost-shared premiums. You can learn more in our Budget 2026 submission: www.cattle.ca/budget-2026-growingthe-canadian-cattle-herd Earlier this year, CCA launched an aggressive campaign to raise awareness about trade negotiations between Canada and Mercosur that could see a massive increase in imports of Mercosur beef. Mercosur is the Southern Common Market (called MERCOSUR for its Spanish initials). It is a South American economic and political trade bloc established in 1991 and comprised of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Increased imports would incentivize beef production on the other side of the world, disincentive cattle production and herd rebuilding in Canada, and would have no impact on the price of beef in Canada. At a time when the federal government is investing in food security, increased trade with Mercosur that would allow increased beef imports does not make sense. Thank you to everyone who visited www.cattle.ca/mercosur and supported our position. At the time of submitting this article, negotiations are ongoing and the campaign continues. Last summer, Alberta Beef Producers formally announced intention to withdraw its membership from the Canadian Cattle Association, effective July 1, 2026. An interim participation agreement between CCA and ABP was announced in June following motions passed in principle at CCA’s AGM. The bylaw changes were subsequently approved at CCA’s semi-annual meeting in August. At the time of this submission, ABP is working through the process of reviewing its membership in CCA. Please watch for more details about how restructuring will be implemented at our AGM in March 2027. We are working with our provincial member associations to implement changes with minimal disruption. He was pre de c ease d by his parents, Ben and Ila and his sister, Arlene. Born in High R iver on March 1, 1940, Jack grew up on the family farm with his older sister Arlene. He spent much of his youth helping on the farm and working with his mother - his Brown O wl - on the badges and tasks that le d him to be c ome a R over Sc out and later a Que en’s Sc out. Jack was an avid spor tsman. He learne d to curl at a young age in Brant, playe d football for R e d D e er Colle ge and later playe d baseball for the Vulcan E lks. He went on to c ompete in many curling bonspiels, including the Massey Ferguson Curlorama, alongside farm teams from across C anada. Jack leaves behind a le gacy of kindness, charm and an unforgettable mischievous spirit. He was the per fe ct mix of “up to no good” and “up to all go od”, and those who had the privile ge of knowing him cherishe d ever y moment spent in his c ompany. Jack was the foundation of his family. His devotion to his wife and best friend C arol and his c ommitment to the well-being and suc c ess of his children, Corinne (Craig), Jeff (Heather), Brian (Bobbi) and Brad (K athy) were his ultimate motivati on. He treasured his role as “Papa Jack” and took great joy in watching his grandchildren grow: Brandon and Maelynn, Kaitlin (Cameron), Jackson and Ian, Ila and Isabella, Kallie, and his great-grandson, Hazel. Jack spent his life as a leader and a value d member of his c ommunity. He ser ve d as a dire ctor and president of the C anadian Simmental A ssociation and was a founding member and president of the C anadian Wagyu A ssociation. He was an entrepreneur in the purebre d cattle business and truly found his calling when he was able to travel and sell genetics to bre e ders throughout C anada, Australia, the Unite d States, Mexic o and Columbia. With his wife C arol by his side, together, they guide d their family through the ups and downs of life while creating me mories that will be cherishe d forever. Jack and C arol retire d to High R iver in 1994 when the boys came home to farm and enter the fe e dlot business. Even in retirement, Jack spent countless hours at the farm, happily serving as the gopher. You could take the boy off the farm, but you could never take the farm out of the boy!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Garren Skeels and Trinity Martin were married on August 8, 2026, at Anchor D Ranch near Rimbey, Alberta.

About Us The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) is a not-for-profit registered foundation dedicated to scholarship and educational support of youth in the business of agriculture and Simmental cattle. The Foundation is governed by a board of directors who are heavily involved in the Simmental industry and who have a vested interest in educating youth, developing leadership, and encouraging young people to be a part of the agriculture industry.

OUR FOCUS SCHOLARSHIPS - The FCSF administers scholarships for youth who are involved in Canadian agriculture. Assisting in the development of youth with a focus on advancing their understanding of agriculture is a very important component of the FCSF. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT - The FCSF supports youth programs such as the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA). The YCSA is one of the most progressive and dynamic agricultural youth organizations in Canada. It is open to anyone 25 years and under who then have the opportunity to participate in various activities across Canada. YCSA members learn important skills including public speaking, marketing and communications which develop strong and dynamic leaders for not only our industry, but society as a whole. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT - The FCSF is actively engaged in supporting research to benefit the agriculture industry in Canada. This work is focused on improving the Canadian beef industry by enhancing production efficiency, product quality and profitability.
