Co-Owned with Blegen Galloways
Hello again Galloway breeders and enthusiasts!
I hope you enjoy this years edition of the Canadian Galloway Advance. There is no better time than now to be in the cattle business with record prices in all facets of the business. Galloway continue to be a source for farm to table markets and for those producers looking to make their cow herds more efficient. Last year we also saw a good number of Juniors showing Galloway and Galloway influenced calves across the country. It is so nice to see these kids doing something they love with the help and encouragement from our breed members. The associations board of Directors and Executive have been fairly busy since last year’s annual meeting. We have been working on the addition of a US Belted section to our herd book and have been reviewing our constitution to have it brought up to date. It has been great to see the effort and commitment everyone is putting in. As a group we encourage everyone to try to get involved or reach out to express your thoughts or ideas. You will also see in this years Advance a notice about the up coming World Congress in 2027 in the UK. This is sure to be a once in a life time event so check it out. Thank you to all those who advertised in this years edition of the Advance and hope you all enjoy it.
Yours truly
CGA President
Brian Robertson

Hi my name is Sophia Blake. I am 10 years old and in grade 5 at Northwoods elementary school. In my spare time I like to skate, bowl and show cattle with my family. I loved trying to learn to clip alongside my Aunt Patti!! As well as learning all things cattle from my mom and grandma! This was my first year of 4-H and I showed Suncrest Natalie as a Galloway heifer calf. Frustrating at times with her but towards the end of the season it was very rewarding! Looking forward to starting another showing season at the National Western Stock Show this January in Denver Colorado.

Our Juniors in Ontario were busy making us proud by showing their Galloways in many shows throughout the year. It started in March with Spring Forward in Ancaster. We had 8 juniors to represent the Galloways at this event. It involved our yearling heifers and yearling bulls.
In April, we were in Lindsay for Youth Forum with 7 juniors and their yearling heifers again. In the Fall, we got busy once more with the youth competing against all breeds in the 4H divisions of the many fairs. Our junior shows ended at Erin Fall Fair with our Scott Van Kampen Memorial Galloway Junior show. Here we had 7 youth representing the Galloway breed. The kids were presented with a Galloway sweatshirt from the Van Kampen Family for participating. Kasey Dawson placed first with her heifer. The juniors want to thank the ECGA for their continued support and sponsorship!

This year I had the opportunity to show a Galloway heifer and steer.
My name is Dylan Gerretsen, I’m twelve and in grade seven. My family and I own a dairy farm outside Listowel. I enjoy soccer, spending time with animals and cadets. I joined the Brussels Belgrave 4-H Beef Club where I showed a purebred Galloway Market Steer - Suncrest Marshall. I was also able to show in 2 Spring Junior Shows representing the Galloways. I went to many fall fairs and helped the Blake family show their herd of Galloways. I have learned lots about the work and energy it takes to show a herd especially taking 12 animals to these fairs.
I’m looking forward to participating in 4-H and helping Suncrest Farms show their Galloways next year.
Hello my name is Kyle Gerretsen, I’m 10 years old and in grade 5, I have a family of 6 with 2 brothers, 1 sister, and my mom and dad.
I enjoyed showing Galloways for the first time this year. I attended a Junior heifer show in April, showing Suncrest Molly. Her and I got along well together in and out of the ring. I learned about washing, brushing and blowing her hair. I joined the Brussels Belgrave 4-H beef club and showed in September with Suncrest Nothing But Trouble.
I was helping the Blake family with their herd of Galloways and learned a lot of interesting things with some laughs and hard work.
I hope to be able to continue in 4 H and helping Suncrest Farm with Galloways.

Blackleg is a rapidly fatal disease of cattle that primarily affects young, fast-growing animals, typically between 6 months and 2 years of age. Treatment is rarely successful; however, blackleg is a preventable disease. This makes awareness and proper management critical for cattle producers.

Cause and Where It Comes From Blackleg is caused by the bacterium Clostridium chauvoei, an anaerobic organism that thrives in environments with little to no oxygen.
This bacterium can be found naturally in the intestinal tract of animals, as well as in soil, where it can survive for many years as highly resistant spores. Cattle become infected by ingesting these spores while grazing. Once inside the animal, the spores can remain dormant in muscle tissue.
Blackleg progresses quickly and often without warning. Affected cattle may be found dead with little or no prior signs of illness. When clinical signs are observed, they may include sudden lameness; swelling of the shoulder, hip, neck, or back; depression; fever; and reluctance to move.
Swollen areas are typically hot and painful initially, then become cold and spongy as gas accumulates in the muscle. A characteristic crackling sensation (crepitus) may be felt under the skin due to gas production. Death usually occurs within 12 to 48 hours of symptom onset.
For disease to occur, Clostridium chauvoei spores must be present and germinate the muscle tissue. When muscle damage occurs (often from normal activity, handling, or bruising) the spores can activate, multiply rapidly, and produce powerful toxins. These toxins will cause rapid necrosis and hemorrhage of the surrounding tissue.
Due to the rapid progression of this disease, treatment is rarely successful. High doses of penicillin administered very early may save some animals, but most cases are fatal before treatment can begin. For this reason, prevention is far more effective and economical than treatment.
Vaccination is the most effective tool for preventing blackleg in cattle. Many multivalent clostridial vaccines are available that provide protection against C. chauvoei. Producers should consult their veterinarian to determine the most appropriate vaccine and schedule for their herd.
Ideally, annual boosters should be administered prior to the anticipated danger period, typically in spring or early summer.
Good management practices also play an important role in prevention. Prompt removal and proper disposal of carcasses help reduce soil contamination with spores.
Additionally, minimizing stress and injury during handling, transportation, and processing can lower the risk of spore activation.

From our rst purchase of Galair White Lad 13A and seven Galloway cows from the Sandrift herd in the spring of 1992 to the present time, we continue to be impressed with Galloway
Galloways have depth in pro table traits starting with fertility, the single most important economic trait in beef cattle.

Other strong traits we select for are Performance, Productivity, Structural Soundness, Longevity, Reliability and Predictability. Pro tability for our customers has always been a core value for us, whether you are cross breeding for hybrid vigor or breeding for feedlot performance or breeding grass nished steers for a direct quality beef marketing program, we have the genetics.

We have a longstanding interest in color pattern heritability and predictability, maintaining historical data on our herd since our rst calf crop in 1993. For over 27 years now we have pursued the Canadian bloodline White Galloway and Riggit Galloway along with our strong core of Purebred Galloways.
We have the most extensive semen inventory in North America including semen from 42 bulls from all four breeds. We also have an extensive inventory of Embryos and will custom collect from current breeding females and from past and present bulls.

Purebred
Galloway bull calves born in Switzerland from Embryos shipped in 2024.

We should see some very interesting calves born in 2026 from some very interesting old sires including Sandrift Yeller 3J (Red) CAN-19501– the homozygous diluted red (gold) and dun red AI sire Alberta Plaid Zircon 34Z CAN-23542. We AI’d several of the gold cows in our herd, and several “dun reds” to intentionally produce more gold Galloways.

We also AI bred a number of Galloway cows to other notable sires from the past including Ladywells Napolean 3N (Blk) CAN-20822 – and White Galloway sire Big Deal White Lightening (Blk) CAN-37W.

We had 85 calves born in 2025 and exposed 108 cows and heifers, including 54 Riggit,16 White and 38 Purebred Galloways, so 2026 should be another year of interest and progress in our herd.

In 2025 we semen collected six (6) new sires, three for domestic use and three for the export market. These included two Black Purebred Galloways, three Riggit Galloways and one White Galloway.

Ladywells Jazillion 5J (Blk) CAN-26211– one of several ET calves born in 2021 from 20 year old embryos.

Kendrick 19K (Blk) CAN-26313 – an exceptional young bull that we expect to leave his stamp in the breed.

Galloway Cattle From Ontario to Newfoundland.... From Field to Showring

My name is Taylor Smith, and this year was my first year showing beef cattle. I had no idea what I was doing when I started, but it’s definitely safe to say I had the biggest supporters and best teachers by my side this entire show season, the Dawson family. I know I would never have improved as much as I have this year if it wasn’t for them. I have met so many amazing people from the Galloway/show community this year alone and I enjoyed every second of this season. My biggest accomplishment this year was at Ancaster Fair, when I placed third in my showmanship class with 7 people in it. I have really gained a passion for showing cattle now, and I think one of the reasons is because of how welcoming and kind everyone I’ve met has been. I couldn’t have chosen a better way to spend a fair season. I am so grateful for the opportunities I had, and new skills I have gained.

Hi, my name is Kasey Dawson. I am 13 years old and in the 8th grade. I love showing cows and this show year was amazing. The two animals that I showed this year were SHAK Miss Cranberry Hill and Cranberry Hill Nahanni. Nahanni is a bull calf that was born on Cranberry Hill Farms and they let me borrow him to show this year because I thought he was cute. Miss C (we say Missy) is a yearling heifer, and she is due in the middle of April to the beginning of May. The reason we made her have the calf later in the year is because she is smaller than most of our cows and we want what’s best for her. Acton Fair was the best day for Miss C and Nahanni. Nahanni competed against two other bull calves and won first. Miss C was in the senior yearling class competing against two other Galloways, she won second, beating one of the best cow people I know. This show year was amazing, and I will remember it forever and always.

Hi, my name is Hailey Dawson. This year was one of the worst and best we have had. We started off the year by losing a calf and then selling the other ones which left us with none. We luckily went looking and found two beautiful heifer calves at Cranberry Hill Farms. All summer long my grandpa had to drive us to the barn to work on them. Johnny offered a yearling heifer to a girl named Taylor who lives on the street behind us and my dad offered to house her for the show season so at the end of July the heifer came to our barn. I was worried at first because I never talked to Taylor before but I’m glad it happened because she is now one of my best friends. We started off the show season a bit rough at Paris but it got a lot better. Out of the 8 fall fair we go to we had some great placings. At Acton we had Grand and Reserve Champion Galloway heifer, in Caledonia we won Grand Champion heifer in the British breed and at Erin we won Grand and Reserve Champion Galloway heifer and also Supreme Champion Galloway. But the best thing about this whole year was getting to meet new people and spending time with the people I love the most.
