From the desk at T Bar… Welcome to the 2021 edition of “Best of the Breeds”, Sunday March 28, 2021 at Heartland Livestock Services, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. This is the 17th Annual… who would have thought back when Merv Schmidt (Belmont Charolais) did not want to halter break and sell bulls all spring, and started this event in Leross, that this bull sale would become one of, if not, the best multi-breed bull sales in the nation… yes, this sale has lived up to its billing! The success of Best of the Breeds must be credited to these six breeding operations who each year upgrade their programs to offer a more improved, higher profit yielding product for the livestock industry. Many breeder bulls have been selected by purebred producers in Canada and south of the line. This year will be no different as the lineup of bulls is powerful and exciting. Whether you are looking for Red or Black Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh or Red, Black, Fullblood or Fleck Simmental, the 112 bulls offer variety with quality. Do not overlook the fact that much of the sale offering is homo polled. We know many of you use at least two breeds in your breeding pastures so you can fulfil your breeding needs on one day, at one sale…. it is like a “bull depot!” The bulls will be available for viewing the day prior at Heartland or stop by any of these herds to preview the sale offering. Feel free to give any of these progressive breeders a call to discuss their bulls and which would be suitable for your breeding situation. History has shown us that the bulls are affordable and get the job done, judging by the repeat customer base. Plan to be with us or online on the last Sunday in March! Gelbvieh is a continental breed that has very strong maternal traits such as docility and rich milk that is produced in tight, correct udders. Gelbvieh will add that extra muscle to give your calves the extra pounds you’re looking for at sale time. Gelbvieh calves are born with vigor, which is one of the reasons Gelbvieh influenced females wean more pounds of calf per cow exposed. Use Gelbvieh bulls in your crossbreeding program to get early maturing, long lasting females, as well as sale topping steer calves. We continue to use a high fiber developer program. We wean the bulls off on oats then after 60 days they are pail fed a bull developer pellet along with barley silage and grass alfalfa hay. This diet develops a healthy rumen, while maintaining good long-term health. We target a 3.5 lb. average gain to develop good footed, long lasting bulls that will last for their new owners. Please join us on March 28th in Yorkton to evaluate our bulls and we can talk about your bull needs. If you can’t make the sale, feel free to call or stop by anytime to tour the bull pen and the cows with their 2021 calves at side. Join us Saturday evening at our hotel and stay the night. Welcome to the 17th Annual Best of the Breeds Bull Sale. We are very excited about the bulls we will have on offer once again this year. We will have both red and black bulls that will work both on heifers, as well as performance bulls to produce those scale busting steers. Our bulls come from good footed, neat uddered, low maintenance cows. At Goodview we put a lot of emphasis on our cows, so you can buy with confidence knowing that the bull you purchased is from a sound, problem free cow herd.

BLB Grid Iron 16G BLB Hellcat 26H is another standout FLAD Element 21E son that has a bright future. He is a maternal brother to the 2019 Futurity Champion, Goodview Grid Iron. Hellcat stands at the top of our pen in both eye appeal and performance. Exhibiting an ADG of 4.25, WDA of 4.12 and indexing at 113. BLB 26H has a big top, tons of hair, a big middle and a scrotal of 42cm. His dam, BLB Winnie 31A is a standout Outback daughter that knocks it out of the park. RWG Captain 5701 BLB Heavy Hitter 15H is an extraordinary bull in our pen. A frame score smaller than the average in our pen but the phrase “as wide as he is tall” describes him to a T. A son of BLB Wilma 1W, the senior cow in our herd and easily a top producer who has produced BLB Bud, the sire of BLB Diplomat who is the sire of BLB 39G who makes his home in North Dakota at Prairie Hills Gelbvieh. 15H is sired by RWG Captain who sires progeny that are big middled, heavily muscled and exhibit a beauty disposition. BLB 15H will sire those moderate, big ribbed offspring that the industry wants.

BLB Hall of Fame 33H is so cool. Liver red in color, huge rib shape and big hipped. He is a moderate framed bull that will work on both heifers and cows, boasting a very low BW of 73 lbs. We purchased his dam, FLAD 23F out of the Function and Finesse Sale from Fladeland Livestock. She is a RWG Right Combination daughter with a perfect udder and teat shape as well as a puppy dog disposition. BLB Hustler 18H is smooth made with a large hip. He is smooth through the shoulder and has a small head. His BW EPD is in the top 20% with a -1.1 and a CE of 13. He won’t be a sleep easy heifer bull but believe Hustler will be dual purpose. His Outback sired dam, BLB Wilma 2A exhibits so much volume with above average milk production. She is an absolute work horse with a beauty temperament. 2A has produced many sons working in commercial programs as well as one son to RPS Gelbvieh. The Wilma family have been great producers. Last year four Wilma sons sold in our sale for an average of $6,000, needless to say this family produces the good ones. 18H is sired by RWG Exact Combination which has made for a cool mating.
