SASKATCHEWAN COMMERCIAL BREEDER OF THE YEAR Introducing Simmental genetics to their crossbred cow-calf operation about 25 years ago has helped Stolson Farms in southwest Saskatchewan achieve a win/win combination in their annual crop of highperformance steer and heifer calves. Those Simmental genetics crossed with Red Angus has made it possible to produce steer calves that go to market with excellent weaning weights but also produces replacement heifers with high milk production and excellent mothering ability. The beef herd on the mixed farming operation at Hodgeville, about an hour southeast of Swift Current had produced a Charolais/Red Angus crossbred cowherd for many years before switching to mostly Simmental in the late 1990s. The Stolsons found that Simmental have excellent maternal traits, and “could really produce the meat as well,” says Ryan Stolson. “So, over the years we have kept using top Simmental bulls to improve overall herd performance. This past year for example we had some pretty good growing conditions in the last half of the grazing season which helped steers achieve some of the highest weaning weights we’ve had. When the grass is there, they are really able to pack on the weight.“

The other half of the herd will be divided into groups for grazing on large extensive native and tame grass pastures.
The Stolsons select Simmental bulls with strong maternal traits. About 80 per cent of the cows and heifers are bred to Simmental, with about 20 per cent bred to Charolais.
The cow-calf pairs remain on pasture with calves weaned in early to mid September. The steer calves go directly to market while heifers are brought home and placed on feed.
With predominately Red Angus-cross females, they aim to maintain about 50/50 genetics between Simmental and Red Angus. They also run a few Red Angus bulls and occasionally buy some Red Angus heifers to be bred and help maintain the genetic balance.
In past years the steers were hauled to auction at Heartland Livestock Services in Swift Current and Balog Auction Services in Lethbridge, while this year they were marketed off the farm through on-line sales for the first time.
With a large annual cropping enterprise which usually involves field work starting in April, the Stolsons stick to a winter calving season that begins about February 1.
The heifer calves will be on feed at home for winter with sorting in March. The Stolsons will make a three-way cut, selecting calves to be kept as replacement heifers for their own herd, another group will be sold as replacement heifers, while anything that doesn’t make the replacement heifer cut will be sold to a finishing feedlot.
Following a tight 45-day breeding season, the calving season tends to be fast and furious with all calving completed by about the middle of March. The herd is kept close in on about 80 acres for calving. The farm has two large barns — one 55 x 150 feet, the other 80 x 100 feet — that can be used for calving as weather dictates. “We check the herd regularly and if it is severe weather we can bring cows inside the barn for calving,” says Ryan. “Last year about 80 per cent of the cows calved inside the barns and this year about 80 per cent of the herd calved outside. So, it just depends on weather conditions.” After cows calve they are sorted and turned out into different fields. The cows with steer calves go in one direction and cows with heifer calves in another. They will remain sorted in those groups for the coming grazing season right through to weaning. After calving the cow-calf pairs are fed on pasture close to the yard through April. Bulls are turned out with about 70 per cent of the breeding done at home. Depending on the year between 80 and 125 head of replacement heifers are synchronized and bred by AI. About the third week of April, calves are processed before heading to pasture around the first of May. “Processing is a full day’s work,” says Ryan. “With the help of neighbours and friends, we get a crew together to rope calves, brand and give them their shots.” Calves are vaccinated and steers are given growth implants as well. The herd is divided in groups as it heads out to pasture around the first of May. Part of the herd is hauled to pasture up to 70 miles away, while the other part is trailed to grass closer to home. With mixed native grass prairie and rolling topography, about half the herd will spend the summer on a combination native and tame grass pasture in a rotational grazing system, where cattle are moved to new pasture about every 10 days.
The cowherd remains on pasture and brought home in October. For winter feed the farm produces barley, which is cut for silage and green feed, along with hay. “As the cows are brought home in the fall, they will be out on fields to clean up any regrowth after silage and depending on the year then move into barley cut for swath grazing which hopefully will carry them through to January,” says Ryan. “A lot depends on the year. If winter comes early, we may need to start feeding in November, otherwise if the snow holds off they can be out on pasture until the new year.” As conditions dictate, the winter feed ration includes a combination of silage, greenfeed and hay fed out in bunks. Usually winter feeding begins in January and continues through the calving season. Ryan says Simmental genetics have worked extremely well in their operation. The maternal traits have made it possible to produce high quality replacement heifers and steers with excellent weaning weights. “With that Simmental influence our cows and heifers produce lots of milk,” says Ryan. “Birthweights range from 80 to 110 pounds, and they are able to raise calves with excellent weaning weights.” He says much also depends on growing season conditions. This year, for example, with moisture in July and August that supported good grass growth, the steers finished the grazing season with 810 lb average weaning weights and heifers at around 630 pounds. “That’s one of the highest averages we’ve had,” he says. “Usually, the steers wean with an average of about 750 pounds. “Conditions will vary from year to year, but overall, we are extremely happy with the Simmental influence in our breeding program, that consistently produces calves with excellent growth and overall performance.”

HERE’S TO ANOTHER GOOD YEAR Welcome to 2026, a year that promises to be full of tremendous potential for both the beef industry and Simmental in Canada. 2025 ended with a very strong calf market but the talk amongst many producers was the extremely strong bred female sales, with Simmental influenced females commanding premium prices and showing the highest demand. If Mother Nature cooperates, another good year should result. Of course, the other wild card is the fickle nature of the decision makers in the White House. It appears that subsidies to US producers may be the order of the day once again to help offset their production costs from unjustified and misconstrued American tariffs on fertilizer and many other products, while in the next breath encouraging imports of offshore beef to North America to lower beef process to consumers. This most definitely affects Canadian cattle producers as well and hopefully our Canadian Government will be there to support the beef industry if necessary, like they have committed to in the steel and manufacturing sectors. Constant monitoring and dialogue from our beef industry groups to Government will be essential. While last year was a very good one for many producers, the weather across Canada was once again quite variable with a real mix from coast to coast. It will be interesting to listen to the long-range weather forecasts that we will hear at the upcoming beef industry conferences. December 2025 gave us some considerable amounts of snow that should provide some run-off to replenish some of the surface water in pastures. That will be very welcome as many pastures depend on that for a water source. Warmer weather through the next couple of months would also be welcomed as many producers take on the challenges of winter calving. Calving is always an exciting time of the year as the waiting game is over to see if the previous year’s mating decisions worked out. Yes, there is a long way to go in the development of that calf, and each trip to the barn is one of discovery as the new calves arrive. For most of our commercial customers who aren’t calving yet, it is a time of maintaining the herd and reviewing all the bull sale catalogues that will be flooding into their homes now that the Canada Post strike is over. There will be a lesser amount of hard copy catalogues this year due to increased production costs, combined with increasing postage costs and the uncertainty of delivery due to ongoing Canada Post issues. It will be up to bull buyers to source their information online. There is no doubt that there is a feeling of optimism in the beef cattle sector and that was clearly displayed in November and December with excellent prices paid for many commercial bred heifers. In some sales with large numbers, average prices of $6000 plus were received with prices for top lots exceeding $10,000. However, there were still heifers in the $4000 - $5000 range to allow anyone to enter the beef industry. The 2025 fall calf run was very strong and in fact many producers received prices that they have never seen before. Although some slight seasonal and traditional pressure was put on prices late in the calf run,
it was less than usual and prices for heavier weight calves were often better than originally expected. One of the big questions is whether expansion of the beef cow herd will happen in the short term or not. The slow expansion of the North American cowherd should help calf prices stay relatively strong. Heavy weight Simmental influenced calves are still bringing top dollars to their lighter weight counterparts and Simmental cross calves are in higher demand regardless of their gender. As usual, heifers were at a discount but at a lesser amount. The reputation of the Simmental maternal strength is well known and the discounts on Simm-Cross heifers was less. While price per pound premiums for Simmental influence were seen as compared to calves of other breeds, the bigger gain was usually seen in pay-weight, especially when compared to straight bred British calves. Breed identity, or the crossbred stamp continues to be an obvious advantage as a “money stripe” or a blaze face on a calf of any color earns a premium because it indicates Simmental influence. A blue Simmental RFID tag back button is also an advantage as it helps buyers identify Simmental genetics in those calves. It is a great idea to use the blue CSA endorsed back buttons in your marketing efforts and is another benefit that the CSA provides to producers using registered Simmental bulls. Smart and timely marketing has always added value to a producer’s calves, and it has never been more important than right now. Reputation cattle bring premiums at all levels. The 2026 bull sales are fast approaching, and many people will need to upgrade their bull inventory once again. The demand for quality Simmental bulls will again be strong and there has never been a larger selection of top-quality Simmental bulls for sale. Traditional, black, red, polled, horned, power bulls or bulls to breed heifers will be available throughout all regions of Canada. Most breeders will have information available to assist with your selection decisions but if it isn’t Canadian Simmental Association provided and endorsed, then ask yourself why. The CSA works diligently at providing credible and useful information to our members. Also make sure the animal is registered with the CSA. Registration applied for, or pending doesn’t cut it! You need the information provided to you to be as accurate as possible through our programming and not simply a result of a “may contain program” that just wants to sell you a bull. There has never been a better supply of top-quality Simmental bulls available for sale that can benefit your bottom line, and Simmental breeders are ready to welcome you to their farm or ranch to check out what they have available either through 2026 bull sales or by private treaty!

VALUE PROPOSITION As this goes to print, bull sales will be kicking into high gear around the country. There will be a lot of high-quality animals that are prepped and ready for sale. Many sales will be made based on observed phenotype and the management that leads to that phenotypic expression. In other words, people will bid on animals based on their appearance, or birth weight or other characteristics that they observe.
For example, an EPD with an accuracy of 0.05 may only contain information on the sire and dam of the calf. An accuracy of 0.20 to 0.30 likely includes the calf’s own performance relative to other cattle in the herd of origin. An accuracy of 0.40 may include information such as a high-density DNA test. Bulls with high accuracy such as 0.75 and above, likely have many calves reported from several herds.
This is certainly a time-tested methodology to select a sire. It is important to realize that this process is in essence, using what the bull looks like to infer what his calves will eventually look like, or we are using his performance to guess what genetics he possesses. It would certainly be beneficial if there was a way to have more information to use in this decision-making process and consolidate it into a single value.
Remember, when you are looking at Simmental bulls this spring, you are not buying the phenotype. You are investing in the DNA they are passing on that will be expressed by their offspring. The best tool to evaluate the DNA of a potential sire are the EPD produced by IGS from a database of over 27,000,000 animals. Further information on EPD can be found at www.simmental.com
The truth is that we do have this information and the tool. It is called an EPD and contains a summary of all of the information we have available on an animal for a given trait. An EPD describes the relative genetic merit of an animal in comparison with other animals in the evaluation. The starting point for any EPD is the use of pedigree. When we are buying a bull, many of us want to look at his mother and potentially tour herdsires in the operation we are buying from. This is based on the idea that calves will, on average, be a combination of sire and dam.
Example: In this example 2 bulls from different operations are shown in 2 different catalogues. Performance data, EPD and (Acc) are shown in the table. Herd 1 uses less intensive management and has a lower energy density in their post weaning diet.
Further to this we can add other information such as birth weight, weaning weight and post-weaning gain. This information further informs our prediction of the genetics possessed by the calf. We can likely all think of scenarios where a sire and dam mated over several years results in significantly different offspring. This is no different than a human family where 2 brothers may be quite different in a variety of ways. This is where individual performance helps to inform us about which DNA the animal received from the parents. Remember, ½ the DNA comes from each parent, but that also means that a calf will not perfectly reflect a parent all the time. Further context is added by comparing the calf to other calves in the same herd that are managed the same way. This is basically the concept of a contemporary group. I think most of us can realize that we can’t directly compare weaning weights from two sale catalogues for herds with drastically different management systems. This concept applies to EPD as well. A newer type of data can be added into the equation as well. This is directly measured DNA through a high-density SNP test (100K). Even by looking directly at the DNA we still don’t know everything about the animal, but we have a better idea of what genes they share with other animals and how their DNA relates to various traits of interest. The inclusion of a DNA test in the genetic evaluation is roughly equivalent to adding a full calf crop of data on an animal that is still too young to have offspring. These pieces of information, help to inform the EPD. The EPD s a reflection of the genetic merit of a bull, or the actual piece that is passed on to and expressed by offspring. The math and procedures behind the EPD help to ensure the quality of the prediction and that the value can be compared across herds, environments and sale catalogues. The other piece of this puzzle is Accuracy. Sometimes bull buyers will assume that because the accuracy of the EPD is below 1.0 that the EPD is less accurate than an actual weight such as a 1550-pound yearling weight. The Accuracy is really a reflection of how much information is included in the EPD calculation.

In this example, the bull from herd 1 would appear to be an easy calving bull based on phenotype, as he has a lighter birth weight, but management has a significant impact on his performance. By looking at the EPD for CE we can see that the bull with the 90# birthweight from Herd 2 is a better choice for easy calving on heifers and the EPD for BW confirms this prediction. We can also see that despite the difference in actual Weaning performance; both bulls have very similar growth genetics to weaning. Finally, when we account for management differences, Bull 1 has genetics for a higher post weaning growth rate than the bull with the higher actual yearling weight. If we look at the accuracy values (in brackets) we can also see that we have more information available for Bull 2 and are thus more certain about the genetic merit that he possesses.

HANDLING LAMENESS FROM SOLE ABSCESSES Sole abscesses have many causes but the good news they can be positively diagnosed by trimming. If trimmed and dug out the right way and with many different forms of medical management, cattle (both bulls and cows) at least in the beef world often make complete recoveries. They often times are misdiagnosed initially which delays the proper treatment but once seen they can be treated earlier and with generally good success. Sole abscess is just that infection that gets under the sole of the foot between it and the very sensitive part of the hoof. It is comparable to having an infection under your finger nail. We are often suspicious of these when we have a high level of lameness and really no swelling in the foot. The cow or bull will generally try to bear as little weight as possible on the infected claw so will hold the leg outwards to take weight off the inside claw or inwards to take weight off the inside claw. That may be your first clue as to where the infection is. We can use hoof testers. These are often individual cases in the herd on generally mature to older cattle. There may have been a puncture wound or a deep crack on the affected claw. There may have been a very deep footrot allowing bacteria to get in under the claw. Often bulls when sparing they put tremendous pressure on their feet fighting, clawing essentially to get traction. This may cause the hoof wall to lift off at the white line allowing foreign materials such as dirt and straw to get under the hoof. In young fractious animals with processing or loading and transporting videos have seen the hooves smoking from the amount of friction and heat this creates. This condition will result in a tip of the toe infection and is sometimes associated with a fracture of P3 which is the last bone in the foot. This condition is called toe tip necrosis the same type of thing as a distal sole abscess. Both conditions need the same sort of treatment which is opening up and paring away the undermined sole. Trimmers may do this on a table for sure . Veterinarians may also do this but depending on the availability of a tilt table or standing trimming chute, the ability to tranquilize the bull or cow lay them down and complete the procedure that way. Most often these occur in one claw and there is evidence of the crack or the other conditions I have mentioned. These are generally a fluke as we see many cracks that don’t go to this. Once the infection gets in under the sole this is where pain and lameness can be quite severe your hoof trimmer or vet or yourself finds the abscess opens it up and allows a big window for drainage flushes it out recovery can be uneventful. Sometimes a block is glued on the other claw to raise it, other times the sole is bandaged to keep it protected and NSAID’s are often given for the pain. It is an individual treatment based on the severity of findings. Many a breeding bull can be restored to full function and most times a week to two rest period is all that may be necessary. The big thing on bulls is there is always the worry about sperm production but getting inflammation down and infection under control are far more beneficial than the worry about the medication. I personally stay away from any steroids on breeding bulls. Often breeders receive calls from concerned clients that a bull has this problem.

As mentioned, there is no hereditary component to this especially if the hooves look normal. Hoof deformities or claw deviations may make a bull prone to develop a sole abscess. Remember if a heritable defect you would see the same thing exactly of at least two claws almost exactly like both rear outside claws as an example. Old injuries can lead to claw abnormalities so one must keep all these things in mind so bad footrot injuries lifted off claws, sprains and strains can all lead to abnormal looking claws down the line. It can even be with bearing too much weight on one leg that the load bearing hoof develops abnormalities. I would hate to think the force per square inch when bulls are fighting. Breeding itself puts tremendous strain on the hind limbs. With toe tip necrosis in younger cattle, we definitely see that with more fractious cattle so before transporting it may be wise to use some of the appeasing products or when mixing groups of bulls together. Treated sole abscesses may or may not need antibiotics and they will grow a new sole over eventually and should in the vast majority of cases make a complete recovery if caught quick enough. Whether this means getting more calves out of a cow over the years or restoring the ability of the lame herd sire to once again be able to breed. Again, these almost always happen in animals especially bulls in the prime of their life. Spending the extra money on treatment and rest often offers a favourable outcome. It is also why especially with herd sires foot trimming can often be preventative by paring out cracks and keeping hooves shorter the ability for infection to get in under the hoof is reduced. Also footing is critical if mature animals are kept in real soft ground hooves grow longer. Also with sick animals or those in chronic pain there is an interruption in growth and a predisposition to crack hooves and infection getting in. If there has been a prolonged recovery likely not a bad idea to semen test the bull again before turning out with the cows. At todays prices getting another year out of a breeding bull or prolonging a cows life longer both have big economic benefits to your operation. This is a great example of individual cases with a good prognosis being saved in the herd. Regular trimming and grinding out bad cracks may prevent some sole abscesses from developing but others you cannot predict but simply deal with them when they arise. This is where good tilt tables are priceless by making these easy to spot and treat. They reduce the work and increase the safety of the operator. Some clinics have tilt tables in them and others work with a good trimmer in the area. This is why if trimming bulls especially try to do it a few weeks from breeding and feet should be looked at closely at semen testing time or earlier if problems arise. Any lame bull is worth closely looking at and having examined as to diagnosis. The different causes have completely different treatments and for others emergency slaughter may be the answer. Take a picture and video walking and that may be the start of what we call telemedicine. From there maybe a diagnosis or at least a plan can get started to get the best outcome. Many a good breeding bull or cow has been shipped because of a lameness that originally could have been treated, trimmed or in some cases had a claw amputated and gone on to a productive life. 12/23/2025 2:21:30 PM

JANUARY COMMERCIAL COUNTRY Happy new year! I hope 2026 has started on a positive note. I am writing this message as 2025 draws to a close, and I am optimistic that 2026 will begin with less uncertainty and upheaval than 2025 did. I hope that you were able to take a step back from the stresses and pressures of your cattle business and enjoy some holiday time with friends and family before jumping into calving.
The start of a new year is a good opportunity to reflect on what went well over the last year, look at areas for improvement, and sometimes make changes. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to review your business plan, emergency response plan, and biosecurity procedures. My family and I reviewed ours and made some changes and updates.
CCA finished 2025 working with other industry stakeholders to provide input before the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) review deadline. We continue to support a tariff-free integrated North American beef and cattle trading market.
We also looked at important dates this year so we don’t miss the deadlines to apply for federal and provincial business risk management programs such as Livestock Price Insurance and AgriStability. For some of these programs, it’s an easy decision for us to sign up and we complete the applications early. For others, we wait for more information like market prices and weather conditions, that help us decide the most effective way and time to manage the risk.
Volatility continues with US trade, and while CCA continues to focus much of our energy behind the scenes on US market access, there are also other areas of focus for our staff and elected officials such as tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers, trade and market access, regulatory burdens, and the need for regulatory alignment with the USA and other international trade partners. Another late fall highlight was the Public and Stakeholder Engagement (PSE) team receiving several accolades at the Best of CAMA (Canadian Agri-food Marketers Alliance) awards which recognizes the very best in agricultural marketing, publicity, and industry relations campaigns every year. The PSE program is jointly delivered by the Canadian Cattle Association and Canada Beef and delivers national public trust issue management and proactive content on the societal benefits of raising beef cattle in Canada. PSE’s newest short documentary, Homes on the Range, took home Best of Show—Digital across all digital marketing categories, qualifying by winning the Non-Traditional Video category. You can watch the video on YouTube (search for @raisingcdnbeef), and you can contact the PSE team if you would like to host a screening or showcase the film. Earlier this year, PSE collaborated on a campaign titled Confessions of a Canadian Beef Farmer with the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and Canada Beef. This campaign received a Certificate of Merit in the Series Execution category, representing the success of this collaborative effort between industry groups. A series of articles highlighting 2025 The Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA) nominees also took home a Certificate of Merit in the News or Feature Article category. These articles, that were pitched to mainstream media publications, helped increase the profile of CCA’s TESA program and the role of cattle producers in protecting and enhancing the environment.
It is important to consider all of the opportunities available to us and ensure that each program is reviewed for potential benefits. When funding programs, grants, scholarships and incentives are underutilized, organizations such as CCA have difficulty securing additional funding and incentives. Not every program works for every producer or cattle operation, but with market values at record high and a volatile geopolitical environment, there is added rationale to reassess and engage in programs that could provide significant benefit. Producers sometimes also have access to participate in research trials and to test new types of technology. When you have the opportunity to provide input and feedback, please take it. The more producers that test new technologies, participate in research, and share feedback and input, the more we ensure that our industry has a voice. We need to speak up when we have the opportunity to complete surveys and provide feedback or we risk others making decisions for us—decisions that may not be in the best interests of our industry. SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Heidi McFadden
WINNER OF THE TREVOR VANCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Heidi McFadden is passionate about connecting agriculture, business, and technology to create solutions that promote sustainability and strengthen food security. As the founder of ProBot, she has introduced over seven-hundred students across Ontario to coding, while also growing her simmental herd under Breakthrough Cattle Company. She’s been an active member in the simmental community serving the Ontario Young Canadian Junior Simmental association for three years and served as former Director and Vice President on the Young Canadian Simmental Association board. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Food and Agricultural Business with a minor in Data Analytics at the University of Guelph, Heidi is guided by the belief that data has the power to transform how we grow, trade, and consume food.
Jackson Corner WINNER OF THE FRIENDS OF CANADIAN SIMMENTAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP My name is Jackson Corner, and I am currently in my 4th year at the University of Guelph pursuing a degree in Animal Science. With a passion for the Simmental breed, I am proud to own a small herd of purebred Simmental and Simmental-influenced cattle that I exhibit across North America. As the current president of the Ontario Young Canadian Simmental Association, I take great pride in planning meaningful events for our youth while fostering their growth and engagement in the agriculture industry. My name is Lilly Howell, I am currently attending the University of Arizona to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree, with majors in Accounting and Business Analytics, while playing on the University of Arizona Division 1 women’s hockey team. I grew up near Penhold, AB, on my family farm, Fairland Cattle Co. We operate 150 head of commercial Simmental and Black Angus cows. WINNER OF THE FRIENDS OF CANADIAN SIMMENTAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP My name is Max Burris, and I’m a first-year Animal Bioscience student at the University of Saskatchewan. I grew up on a small commercial cattle operation near Barrhead, Alberta, where my passion for the industry began. I have exhibited Simmental cattle for many years and remain heavily involved in 4-H, serving as a provincial ambassador for the northwest region. I currently serve as Treasurer of the Alberta Simmental Association and as an Alberta Director on the national board. Through these roles, as well as serving as First-Year Degree Representative at the University of Saskatchewan, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor youth and promote leadership in agriculture. I am especially grateful to the Alberta Simmental Association and the national board for the opportunities they provide to learn, grow, and contribute to the cattle industry. I am honored to receive the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarship and thankful for their support of young people in agriculture.
Shelby Woytiuk WINNER OF THE FRIENDS OF CANADIAN SIMMENTAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP My name is Shelby Woytiuk, and I am currently in my third year of a degree in agronomy at the University of Saskatchewan. I am extremely excited to pursue a career in the agriculture industry following the completion of my degree. I grew up as the third generation on my family’s purebred Simmental and grain operation, Crossroad Farms, in Northwestern Saskatchewan. I was an active 4-H member for fourteen years and have recently completed my two-year term on the SYCSA board as secretary. I have taken great pride in being able to have been raised in the Canadian cattle industry and am confident that it will play a large part in my future. I would like to thank the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for this opportunity and all of their support they provide for the youth of our industry.

2025 SSA COMMERCIAL BREEDER OF THE YEAR! STOLSON FARMS Stolson Farms is a 5th Generation mixed ranching/farming operation at Hodgeville, SK. where they run 650 cows along with a grain operation. Over the past 20 years they have added some of the best Simmental genetics available to their commercial herd with genetics sourced from Wheatland Cattle, Crossroads Farms, Mader Ranches, Rendezvous Farms and Labatte Simmentals. Four years ago, they reduced their breeding days from 60 days to 45 days, which they feel has improved gestation in their cow herd and more uniformity in their calves. Calving starts Feb 1 through to mid-March. Adding years of Simmental breeding and genetics into our cow herd has given us our best cow herd ever - great milking cows with healthy udders, big growthy steer calves and unbelievable replacement heifers. They are very honoured to be recognized as the 2025 Saskatchewan Simmental Association Commercial Breeder of the Year.

At the Royal Winter Fair we presented the 2025 Commercial Producer Award to Haddie Simmentals, Brandon Ernest and Ashley Fairminer and family of Walkerton, ON. They run a Simmental Influenced herd of 100 cows plus 30 registered Simmental cows. Each fall they market their calves in the successful Calf-O-Rama Pre-sort sales in Keady. They market bred heifers in the annual Top Cut Bred Heifer Sale in Hanover. They have repeat customers that come to purchase their heifers each fall from the sale. They truly believe in the value of Simmental genetics in a commercial setting. They like the maternal strength of Simmentals while not giving up performance traits at the same time.
