AFL TASMANIA HIGH PERFORMANCE TRAINING FACILITY Project Type : Sport Infrastructure Contexts The AFL Tasmania High Performance Training Facility in Kingston was designed to bring local communities and visitors closer to the landscape, respond to environmental conditions and the sports precinct’s needs, and create a memorable, hands-on experience that strengthened the site’s connection to place. Challenge One challenge was balancing budget constraints with a thoughtful planting design. The client proposed using mostly grasses instead of shrubs to save costs—an approach that can work at first but often leads to more maintenance later Approach Rather than making short-term cost-saving choices, I help to develop a planting strategy based on the site’s microclimate, including shade analysis. For example, one planting zone drew inspiration from Tasmania’s Grassy Woodland, increasing habitat value by introducing a wider mix of native species that require little maintenance and are well adapted to local conditions. Responses The final design supports AFL training while also encouraging ongoing community use and creating a more engaging experience for everyone.

Working on this project sharpened my ability to collaborate across disciplines and balance elite sports needs with practical outcomes for the wider community, all while meeting tight deadlines.

Responses The design makes the park easier to use, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone. U U
I also used sensory landscape mounds as a ‘Space Breaker’ to draw the dogs’ attention away from chasing; this feature consists of a rock scramble 600mm high with rocks and plants that promote climbing and interaction N N
Approach I created a sensory buffer to control the dogs’ behaviour and boost their engagement, using plants such as rosemary and native fuchsia to provide a rich sensory experience through scent, texture, movement, and exploration. O O
Challenge I designed a garden to help dogs manage their behaviour, as they had been digging and collecting items along the fence line, creating safety risks near Macaulay Road. FH
Contexts The project renewed Melbourne’s oldest offleash dog park. The main aim is to improve safety, increase accessibility, and create a friendly atmosphere for all park users. 2

Approach To strengthen the connection to Wurundjeri culture, I helped design a yarning circle on the north side of the art building using large basalt rocks from the site for seating. Around the circle, I planted native species like kangaroo grass and chocolate lily in groupings that reflect the seven Wurundjeri seasons. Different sections change throughout the year. The space is positioned for morning sun and easy access, supporting gatherings, storytelling, and cultural learning. Responses The result is a school atmosphere that is more inclusive and welcoming while also promoting cultural learning and interaction. This project increased my experience in translating cultural narratives into meaningful landscape outcomes through materials, planting, and spatial design.

GROUND FLOOR 143 FRANKLIN STREET, MELBOURNE VIC 3000 AUSTRALIA T: (03) 9329 6844 E: OFFICE@URBANINITIATIVES.COM.AU
Approach I assessed how the new court would affect existing slopes and pathways. The northeast path conflicted with the required two-metre run-off zone and was only 1.5 metres wide, below the 1.8-metre standard for wheelchair passing. The ground also sloped sharply away from the path, creating a safety risk for mobility-impaired users. To resolve this, the concrete path was demolished and regraded, widened to 2 metres, and fitted with a handrail, stairs, and a ramp to ensure safe, accessible entry to the basketball court for everyone.

Challenge A key challenge was integrating the required twometer run-off zone surrounding the court within the constrained existing site conditions, particularly due to the existing slope and conflicts with adjacent concrete pathways.

THE MYCELIA PARADISE, DAREBIN PARKLAND, VICTORIA University Project
Project Type : Design Research Contexts It offers an alternative way of ecological regeneration by deconstructing the existing ecological pyramid. It considers how the human body (walking) can be used as an agent of change. Challenge Darebin Parkland is facing many contemporary landscape challenges. For example, the high salinity (Leachate treatment) within the current wetland system and irregular stormwater have significantly threatened local biodiversity. Approach It uses human walking as a tool to redesign this very human centre parkland into a habitat for mycelium (the root of mushrooms). It reshapes the walking environment to trigger the existing mycelium network through controlled foot traffic, preserving and enhancing biodiversity.
Use Human walking as a tool
Responses It explores how the landscape can be performed for other-than-human species. Ultimately, it urges us to be aware of the non-human actors within the landscape, learning and collaborating with them in order to co-exist in this age of environmental crisis.
Controlling human movement through creating water catchment areas
Binding soil particles, stabilise containments, filter pollutants and form symbolic relationship with trees.
Existing brackish soil
Permeable pavement
A casual walking style that encourage roaming in summer
Moss (nature buffer for foot traffic)
A curated ritualistic style of walking experience in Autumn
Increase humidity that leads to growth of Wooddecompose fungi 9
