2026 Education Program

Welcome

Welcome to Sydney Dance Company’s 2026 Education Program!

We’re thrilled to share the many exciting ways young people can engage with us in 2026.

Whether it’s the thrill of moving in a dance workshop, the anticipation of watching a performance unfold on stage, the hands-on creativity of our curriculumlinked resource packs, or the flexibility of our virtual programs — there are countless opportunities for students to connect, create and be inspired.

At Sydney Dance Company we believe dance changes you. It’s more than witnessing beauty or engaging with culture — to experience dance is to be transformed. And that transformation is even more powerful when shared with young people.

Contact us any time you wish to discuss any of these programs in more detail. We can’t wait to hear from you!

“Dance is a language, a way to speak without words. Dance speaks when words fall short. Through movement, we express who we are and connect with others. It opens the body, expands the mind, and stays with us long after the music fades.”

Sydney — Season 1 2026 Engine

Performance Season: Wednesday 24 June – Sunday 12 July

• Secondary School Matinee: Thursday 25 June 2026, 12.30pm

• Primary School Matinee: Thursday 2 July 2026, 11.30am

Engine unites three extraordinary choreographers; Rafael Bonachela, Fran Diaz and Melanie Lane, for an exhilarating performance that promises bold, fearless dance.

Rafael Bonachela premieres The Journey Itself is Home, a new work featuring music by Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dressner and inspired by 17th-century Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō.

The second work is the Australian premiere of The Mass Ornament by remarkable Berlin-based Spanish choreographer Fran Diaz, a hypnotic work set to the music of Henryk Gorecki. Reimagining Siegfried Kracauer’s seminal 1927 essay, Diaz transforms

the concept of mass movement into an exploration of connection and collectivity, where individuality coexists, not in opposition, but in dialogue.

Completing the bill is the return of acclaimed Australian/Javanese choreographer Melanie Lane’s Love Lock, a re-imagined folk dance of the future, drawing upon collective experiences of diverse cultures, an accelerating world and disappearing lands. Love Lock celebrates the binding ability of dance to move, warn and empower, showcasing costume design by celebrated Australian fashion designer Akira Isogawa, layered with texture and colour, and a score composed by UK electronic artist Clark.

Sydney — Season 2 2026

Current

Performance Season: Wednesday 3 – Sunday 20 September

• School Matinee – Wednesday 9 September, 11am

• School Matinee – Thursday 10 September, 11am

• School Matinee – Wednesday 16 September, 11am

Current threads together three new commissions from leading Australian choreographers, Raghav Handa, Jenni Large and Azzam Mohamed, with the Australian premiere of Rafael Bonachela’s seminal work E2 7SD. Together these four artists form a compelling portrait of contemporary Australian dance — diverse in form, voice and perspective, yet united by curiosity and originality of expression.

Created in London in 2004, E2 7SD is the award-winning work that defined Bonachela’s signature choreographic style and put him on the world stage, winning over audiences and achieving critical acclaim. Never performed before in Australia, this momentous anniversary feels like the perfect time to share this dynamic, high-energy duet.

We have commissioned some of Australia’s most exciting choreographers to present new works that will join E2 7SD on stage as part of one seamless experience. Creating alongside Bonachela is Raghav Handa, our 2025 Balnaves Artist in Residence, whose work draws on the principles of Indian kathak to explore multifaceted expressions of contemporary Australian identity; Jenni Large, a New Breed alum and our 2026 Balnaves Artist in Residence, who creates work infused with hyper-design and apparatus, inspired by the personal, political and transformational forces of the body; and Azzam Mohamed, a Sydney-based Sudanese dancer, choreographer and educator, whose practice spans a rich blend of traditional cultural, street and club dance forms.

To ensure you don’t miss this electrifying performance showcasing Australia’s best contemporary dancers, register your interest in matinee tickets.

Read what teachers and students have said about our past School Matinee performances:

“The performance was informative, mesmerising, well-timed and comprised of everything that was advertised. It gives students an insight into the contemporary dance industry, specifically engaging with dance as an artform which is the context of the dance curriculum.

Many students have only experienced dance from a ‘studio’ and eisteddfod perspective, so these shows broaden their view and experiences of dance, helping them to see the artistry more.”

– Secondary Teacher

“The matinee was fun, exciting, intriguing. The matinee offers authentic experiential education.”

– Primary Teacher

“Our students absolutely loved the day travelling into the city and participating in the program. They really enjoyed the opportunity to experience three different dance styles and the class length felt perfect without being overwhelming. A real sense of bonding and connection developed among the group during the excursion, which was beautiful to see. Overall, they had the best day and are still talking about the experience. Thank you for such an inspiring and well-run event!”

— Secondary teacher – Blaxland High School

“It provided our students with exposure to a live performance of dance that they would otherwise not get the opportunity to see. It enables us to demonstrate the level of skill and dedication that can be applied to achieve a goal.”

— Fairfield Public School

“Our kids had the most wonderful time participating in the workshops. The Teaching Artists were wonderful in their delivery, and all of the students enjoyed the experience. Even those who were skeptical or nervous about it had had a change of heart by the end. Thank you for providing such a unique opportunity for our students and an extra special thank you to the Artists for their contribution.”

— Primary teacher – Irymple South Primary School

“I loved learning the repertoire in particular, but I also loved meeting and working with people (peers and teachers alike) from all across Australia and with different experiences to share.”

— Youth Intensive participant

“Attending the matinee boosts creativity and supports their artistry by being exposed to new works they haven’t seen and also by taking class with a teacher they haven’t worked with before. It is really beneficial for students to hear how, stimuli, improvisation and tasking can be used when developing a work. They do this at school, so it is wonderful for them to hear industry professionals talking about this.”

— Secondary teacher – Hunter School of Performing Arts

“The creative development classes were the most meaningful to me as I could feel my confidence growing each day. I also loved performing the repertoire at the end of the week. I was pleasantly surprised at how much learning we were offered on a lot of different fronts. Met and exceeded my expectations!”

— Professional Intensive participant
