CITY EXTRA

Springboard to a new future By John Roca, Dealer Principal

Sydney City Toyota has taken many positives out of the Covid-19 lockdown, and it’s our belief that our guests have benefitted. We have learned to navigate a path around remote valuations, and how we can help people buy and maintain their Toyotas even when they could not access our dealership. We’ve helped people choose and buy certified preowned Toyotas and we have given them a Covid-only opportunity to return them if they’re not totally satisfied with their purchase. When the State Government relaxed the access rules, we were first to ensure that we offered vehicle service opportunities to our guests who were most affected in red spot LGAs. We have also worked with our Toyota distributor to ensure we are able to help our guests through the world-wide wait for cars that has been the consequence of the pandemic. But first – I want to welcome everyone back and assure you that we are doing everything in our power to make our homes – at Glebe and Waterloo – your homes. It was the happiest day of 2021 when we re-opened the doors to our guests – in accordance with the guidelines laid down

by NSW Health. Our policy is to continue to comply with Health regulations, and as they relax, we will ensure that our operational systems synchronise with the relaxed regulations. But meanwhile, we will be travelling the extra mile to make sure no-one is disadvantaged. We have developed a system in which trade-in valuations can be performed accurately and remotely – by using pictures taken by our guests, so that our assessment of their vehicle is completely accurate. And how was it all collected? We’ve been running our own version of Click, Call and Collect. Where necessary, we have been sending our guests a new Toyota on a purpose-built car trailer, and this has resulted in bringing back the trade-in. Our expert sales team have been conducting one-on-one virtual handovers, sitting in exactly the same make and model of Toyota in the showroom. It’s been so successful that 25 percent of our guests have said they would like to continue that experience. However, the optimal experience for every guest is their presence in our showroom for the full comprehensive, bells and whistles ribbon-reveal.

King off the road – again In 2014 Toyota President Akio Toyoda sent 120 of his best engineers to Australia to drive more than 72,000 kms to learn about our harsh and varied environmental conditions. Australia is designated by Toyota as a Centre of Excellence. We have more than 80 percent of all the world’s road configurations on our doorstep. The result of the extensive local testing is the All-New Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, a major leap forward by the iconic 4x4 already revered as the King Off The Road. One of the first units has just arrived in our showrooms and, with such interest from loyal guests, we’re taking advance orders for delivery early next year. The new LandCruiser 300 offers Sydney City Toyota guests more choice than ever before with two new flagships the luxury Sahara ZX, and the off-road focused GR Sport, joining the core GX, GXL, VX and Sahara range. All are powered by a new 227kW/700Nm 3.3-litre V6 twinturbo diesel engine through, incredibly, a 10-speed torque converter transmission. There’s never been a LandCruiser, or for that matter a 4x4, like it. It’s lighter, which means it can carry up to 90kg more payload.

It’s stronger, which means that it handles its 3,500 kg braked towing capacity with ease – and this time there’s a tow wiring harness built in, to make connecting a trailer even simpler. Fuel economy has improved by 6.3 percent to an exceptional 8.9 litres per 100km on the combined cycle, which means as an up to seven-seater with heaps of luggage space, it’s economical even for around-town driving. LandCruiser has been Australia’s favorite off-road SUV ever since it worked on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric scheme well over half a century ago. These days it’s a highly sophisticated off-roader with no fewer than 10 multi-terrain controls for ultimate traction in the harshest conditions. Monitors give occupants 360-degree vision of the path around them, and even an underfloor view of the terrain they’re passing over. On-board enhancements are extensive – including upgraded Toyota Connected Services with automatic assistance in the event of an emergency and vehicle tracking.

Service schedules made flexible Sydney City Toyota has designed a service schedule to suit every one of its guests who’ve been caught out by the pandemic. “There are people who’ve not been able to get their cars to us and others who’ve fallen out of their regular service cycle,” said Sydney City Toyota’s General Manager Service Con Hatzivasiliou.

50 Million and skyrocketing Sydney City Toyota is celebrating a momentous occasion 50 million Toyota Corollas have been purchased worldwide, and we sold one of the first to come to Australia. It was 1967 and York Toyota, the NSW Toyota distributor from which we’ve grown, delivered one of the first batch of 15 of the tiny two-door sedans to arrive in the country. Since then, Corolla has become the world’s most indemand motor car. In the last year alone, a Corolla has been delivered to a new owner at the rate of one in every 28 seconds, across 150 countries. There have been 12 generations of Corolla since that first KE10 model, and each one has been better, and in more demand than the last. We’re proud of our involvement, from part sponsoring the first Corolla to win its class in the Bathurst 500 way back in 1968, through to introducing it to driving schools and Australian families across the country.

We proudly claim that in many ways, Corolla is Australia’s own car. More than 1.5 million have been delivered Down Under. We are delighted to be representing it to not only our existing guests, but to a whole new generation of Australians.

The fake parts are cheap for a reason, according to the FCAI.

While we were away It’s been a tough year for everyone – and that includes the 300-plus people who serve our guests at Sydney City Toyota. During lockdown we’ve done our best to be there for our guests, and also for our team-members. Here are some of the ways our staff got through lockdown.

Order now for the future There is currently an undeniable global shortage of cars from different manufacturers, including Toyota, as worldwide demand outstrips supply. Nevertheless, don’t delay placing your order as there’ll likely be a month-long delay in fulfilling the order. In other words, unfortunately it’s unlikely there’ll be a rush of new stock to fulfill existing demand. So, our advice is to get your order in at the appropriate

time for when you feel you want your new Toyota, and we’ll do our utmost to meet your requirements. Toyota’s Australian chief of sales and marketing Sean Hanley took the unusual, but we think, proper step of making this potential supply shortage public. Not many brands have done that, and we applaud him for it. Sean said he appreciated the patience and loyalty of our guests in these unprecedented times, and we can only concur.

Brock in the USA Sydney City Toyota takes pride in supporting the careers of young sportspeople. One, Brock Jarvis, came to us via our long association with Australian boxing legend, three-time world title holder Jeff Fenech. Twenty-three-year-old Brock, an up-and-comer in the sport, has just been taken up by British promoter Eddie Hearn to join his renowned Matchroom stable.

And in his first bout in the USA in October, Brock scored a remarkable TKO in the fifth of ten rounds against highly favoured Mexican, Alejandro Frias. It was made even more meaningful as Brock was in the USA without his family and friends – a long way from home. From Sydney City Toyota, our congratulations to him and all involved in his exciting young career.
