CITY EXTRA

Welcome to the ‘New (Ab)normal’ By John Roca, Dealer Principal

It’s my pleasure to welcome you to our first edition of City Extra for 2022 and to act as your guide to the way we’re going to meet your motoring needs in a world like never before. ‘New normal’ is such an overused phrase and it’s also a bit misleading because what we regard as ‘normal’ this year might not be so in 2023. So, I’m calling it the New Abnormal. In so many respects, though, the news is all positive. Demand for motor vehicles – SUVs, passenger vehicles and commercials – has been way ahead of most expectations. In 2021 Australians bought more than 1,049,000 motor vehicles: not a record, but that’s only because demand outstripped supply. If we’d had the vehicles available, 2021 would have been a runaway record beater. Toyota customers fared the best of all. We delivered almost quarter of a million Toyotas – 21 percent of all registrations and that marked 25 years of Toyota leadership in the Australian market. I suspect it’s going to be the same story this year. The pandemic has been the culprit that has slowed the production of microprocessors which are essential for the smooth running of new vehicles. Its caused immense frustration for eager and loyal guests who have every right to expect to buy their new Toyota when they want it. Instead, we’re told it will be August until the market returns to some normality. By the look of it, Toyota will be in a better position than most then to meet pent up demand.

But truly, that will be playing catch up. As part of our action plan for 2022, we’ve now drawn up a means of helping our guests to plan ahead – to get their new Toyota at a time when they want it. Right now, we’re suggesting to our guests that they should think a year ahead. If you know you’re going to want to trade up in 2023, now is the time we can help you choose and specify the exact vehicle you want and put in an order that reserves it for when you need it. In one respect forward planning is going to help you get exactly the vehicle you desire, even with the most popular models. It’s going to make life easy. In this age of New Abnormal we’ve even thought outside the square. As demand for quality used vehicles goes sky-high, we’re helping a small number of customers realise the appreciation of their automotive asset by trading it in now when its value is inflated. The downside is that they’ll have to wait for their new Toyota to arrive. But some families have multiple cars in their garage so they might be happy to arrange a work-around. It’s not going to suit everyone, but it’s a service that might make change-over pricing even more attractive. In the pages of City Extra there are helpful hints to help you see 2022 as an automotive glass-half-full. There are so many good new Toyota vehicles in the pipeline we’re truly excited about the road ahead.

Buying your Toyota a personal experience Sydney City Toyota encourages all its guests to ‘prep’ for the moment they buy or trade up to their new Toyota. An online tool helps guests achieve a personalised rate for obtaining finance for their purchase and another helps them accurately value their current Toyota. The personalised rate is a private online conversation between the guest and Toyota Finance and it in no way impinges on the guest’s credit rating in the community. We’re happy to note it has resulted in guests paying on average less for finance than ever before. Personalised finance enables Toyota to customise a repayment schedule based on a guest’s assessment of their own cash flow. They can choose from a menu of repayment

options which best suit their needs and we can be certain that we’re working in their best interests by selling them the Toyota they want. Sometimes it’s a case of matching the most comfortable finance package to the most suitable Toyota in that range. Our Valuation Tool is an easy three step process to giving our guests an accurate estimate of what their car is worth. Increasingly it’s a moving target. Right now, the value of quality used vehicles - especially Toyotas - is escalating; so, checking on your potential asset value is really important when it comes to trading up. Plan ahead for your Toyota-after-next Covid isn’t going to last forever; stock shortages are going to go away (both are our hopes anyway). So, we’re planning for a time when the New Abnormal, truly becomes the New Normal. Toyota Access is a unique loan which allows for all eventualities. It’s a system which enables us to agree with our guests on an agreed value of their new Toyota at the end of the loan period, subject of course to fair wear and tear. Then we’ll structure a repayment schedule which revolves on that agreement.

At the end of the period, they can choose to use their guaranteed future value agreement to either trade up to a new Toyota; payout or refinance the remainder of the loan; or simply give the car back to us, having enjoyed the benefit of low monthly payments. We came up with the idea a while back, but the pandemic, with all its uncertainties, has made Toyota Access even more relevant. In a world of uncertainty, it’s brought a real feeling of confidence to Toyota ownership.

But they’re not locked in.

Myth busting – hybrids are forever Its 21 years this year since Toyota introduced its first hybrid battery-electric vehicle – the Prius – in Australia … and people still ask us: where do you plug it in? There are plug-in hybrids, but they came later.

4 | SYDNEY CITY TOYOTA | CITY EXTRA

To us, the concept of a self- charging electric vehicle, relying on no external power source at all, is still an act of pure genius. To bust a few myths, we asked our Sydney City Toyota Ambassador Mark Warren to give you a guided tour.

Kinto is the new way to ‘own’ a Toyota Sydney City Toyota has been appointed a pilot dealer for Toyota’s global Kinto network of car rental outlets. We see ourselves as reimagining the traditional car rental model by inviting our guests to stay close to us for special vehicle needs which may be measured in hours, days, weeks or even longer. Our guests become Kinto members and communicate via a special App which enables them to easily book a Toyota at any time. At Sydney City Toyota we have a range of Corollas, Camrys and RAV4s available for hire. All of them are serviced by our factory trained technicians and are prepared to our high standards.

The good news is that membership of Kinto in Sydney extends around the world so wherever our guest is travelling to major centers, they can be assured of excellent Kinto service. Increasingly Toyota sees itself providing its guests total mobility solutions. It’s not enough to simply sell new vehicles. Kinto is a very serious move into the concept of on-demand car sharing and its being rolled out by one of the most progressive automotive companies in the world. It’s a trend worth following.

Toyoda-San to help the development of global mobility It is with some pride that we can announce that Akio Toyoda, president of the Toyota Motor Corporation and our own Master Driver, has been appointed to the senate of the Federation Internationale de L’Automobile, the world governing body of mobility and motorsport. Toyoda-san is the first ever automotive industry CEO to be appointed to the 16-person senate which will determine future development of road safety as well as motor sport. In Australia the members of the Australian Automobile Associations, such as the NRMA, are affiliated with the FIA as is Motor Sport Australia.

Mr. Toyoda, who is a good friend of Australia, has visited here several times and used our country to launch a global assessment program in 2014 to make our vehicles even better. He participated on that epic drive circumnavigating the country and his learnings have resulted in the dynamic range of Toyotas we have today. His inclusion on the FIA’s global senate is a major indication of the growing influence this dynamic leader is having in the motor industry as a whole.
