Editor’s note Maintaining the excellence achieved by the ones who came before us was a daring challenge. Ensuring a publication delivers its promise is no easy task. Leading said publication to make sure it stays on track is an even harder feat. But after everything this publication has been through, it's safe to say that everything was worth it. The thing about excellence is it isn't something inherently present from the beginning. Excellence is achieved, molded and shaped into its highest level. Excellence is something you need to maintain if you want it to be associated with who you are. And that is why we will always be here, the student journalists of The Maroon Ink. Informants. Messengers. Watchdogs. Truth-tellers. Servants to the student body. We value excellence amidst adversity, paving way for a just and right service to the school. We will always be here to continue inking advocacies and solidifying the truth. Steadfast. Unwavering. Unyielding. These are the words that have defined us as we progressed through the year. Now, we are defining ourselves with a single word that encapsulates all that we have accomplished and are going to accomplish: Excellence.

he SWU Coliseum Grounds has once again been filled by over 3,000 students as the Senior High School Department of Southwestern University (SWU) PHINMA officially opened the new school year. To kick-start the new academic year, SWU PHINMA welcomed its SHS students with a general orientation and 'organization shopping' event, themed First Day Hype on June 3, 2019. Present during the general meeting that took place in the afternoon were Basic Education Dean Mrs. Roselyn Fortunado,

Senior High School Department Principal Mr. Patrick Salinas, Chief Operations Officer Mr. Albert Gamboa, and the faculty members of the said department. Meanwhile, spearheaded by the SHS Student Body Organization (SBO), the 'organization shopping' evenr was held right after the orientation in order for both old and new students to enlist themselves to various clubs, and to acquaint their fellows. Itinuturing na pinakamataas na tagapamahala ang SBO sa departamento ng SHS na naglalayong magbigay ng mga opisyal na balita at impornasyon sa mga aktibidad na binabalak gawin ng unibersidad at may mabigat na responsibilidad sa pagpapanitili ng kaayusan sa loob ng kam-

SHS DEP’T CLAIMS Siglakas grand slam title

The Senior High School Department of Southwestern University PHINMA (SWU) was declared as the overall champion of Siglakas 2019 during the awarding ceremony last September 13, simultaneous to Vaiots and the Battle of the Bands competition. Group athletic games such as Men's andWomen's Beach Volleyball, Men's and Women's Indoor Volleyball, Scrabble, and Badminton contributed gold and silver medals for the department. For the individual tourneys, 1 silver medal was acquired by the Spelling Bee contest; the Oratorical Speaking Contest on the other hand won 1 gold medal. The SHS Department bagged a total of 21 gold medals, 15 silver medals, and 20 bronze medals, paving a way for them to rise to the

top, followed by the School of Medicine as the first runner-up. "I am very happy with the result [of Siglakas 2019]," said SHS Principal Patrick Salinas. "My heart is in a pure bliss. Our success as the 3-Peat champion showed our teamwork and hardwork to outshine the other departments,"he added. On the other hand, the Senior High School Student Body Organization Governor Fel Silvederio expressed her gratitude over the department's victory. "I am so proud for the SHS Department. I commend everyone for a job well done," said Silvederio. Meanwhile, MedTech/RadTech clinched the 2nd runner-up spot, followed by 3rd runner-up Business School, while VetMed and Dentistry was hailed as 4th and 5th runners-up respectively. TMI

Hango ito sa samu’t saring kuwento na makikita sa kalye ng Cebu. Iilan sa mga konsepto sa temang ito ay ang : 01k, Ukay-Ukay, Fuente Circle, Chapel, Puso, Larsian, Candle Lighting, Siomai sa Tisa, Basilica Minore Del Sto. Nino de Cebu at iba pa. Lima sa halos 70 na pelikula lamang ang itinanghal sa Awarding Night. Ito ay ang Sistine ng 12- ABM 5, ABCDEF? ng 11-HUMSS 1, Dalan ng 11-HE 2, Usa Ra ng 12- STEM 6 at Laum ng 12-STEM 11. Itinanghal na Best Picture ang Sistine ng 12 ABM 5 dahil sa katangi-tangi nitong banghay. Nasungkit nito ang bawat puso ng mga manonood. Napahiyaw ng todo ang madla nang ipinakita na sa screen ang kasukdulan ng kwento. Tunay na nakakatindig balahibo ang mga eksena dala na rin sa husay ng pagganap ni Kristine Arquillano bilang Sistine. Mula sa cinematography hanggang sa casting, hindi maipagkakaila na ang Production Team ng ABM 5 ang tunay na mga dalubhasa sa larangang ito. Sa pagpatak ng alas 8 ng gabi, hiyawan ng madla ay patuloy na lumalamon sa musika at himig na handog ng mga batikang Dj’s na bumisita sa Unibersidad para makisaya. s the widespread case of the infamous Coronavirus also referred to as the Wuhan virus plagues China, what was initially thought to be transmitted through animal contact is now reporter to show human to human transmission which has people alerted about the new coronavirus strain, which officials described as 80 percent similar to Sars-Cov. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause respiratory illnesses. This family includes the viruses that causes SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) as well as those that cause milder illnesses, like the common cold. Common signs of coronavirus infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. While severe cases show pneumonia, acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. The deadly pneumonia-like disease was first identified on December 31, 2019 in the chinese city of Wuhan and is spreading rapidly throughout the the major cities including Macau, Beijing, Shanghai and Hongkong. Whilst in
abroad, Thailand, United States, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan have reportedly got the viral disease. While China being the epicenter of a new virus outbreak, with three deaths and over 200 cases, mostly in Wuhan, they decided to cancel major public events, including two popular Lunar New Year temple fairs since the total number of coronavirus cases is rapidly increasing at an immense rate and is expected to rise further as travel season peaks during the Chinese New Year. “Basically, do not go to Wuhan. And those in Wuhan, please do not leave the city.” Li Bin, China’s National Health Commission vice-minister, said in a news briefing, as reported by the BBC. The Department of Health (DOH), strongly advises the public to practice frequent handwashing, proper cough and sneeze etiquette, avoid contact with farm and wild animals and people showing cold or flu-like symptoms. Wearing of mouth mask, drinking tons of water, avoiding touching your mouth, nose, and eyes without washing your hands, and taking of Vitamin C will also help keep the deadly virus away. TMI.

iterally welcoming 2020 with an explosion, the famous Taal volcano in Batangas erupted on the 12th of January with 33 recorded historical eruptions after 43 years of being an active volcano. Though people want to welcome the new year with a loud and energetic manner, the Taal volcano has its own way of celebrating the first month of the decade. Red-hot lava gushed out of its crater and spewed ash for up to 14 kilometers or nine miles into the air and generated volcanic lightning, posing a deadly consequence for people living in its shadow. With approximately 6,000 people killed on the recent eruption, livelihoods were destroyed, animals suffered, and millions-worth of damage were recorded just days after the initial eruption. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the volcano started spewing ash Sunday afternoon with alert levels two raised to alert number four. “The speed of escalation was unex-

pected,” said Mark Timbal, spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) The affected residents that are living near the danger zone were at risk from deadly toxic gases emitted from the eruption, and were all immediately evacuated to their assigned evacuation areas. They were also told to wear protective masks to avoid inhaling the harmful ashes and debris which can cause health problems or even death. Although scientists have already warned the public that the volcano might explode a much bigger eruption, some residents still refuse to leave their homes, or went back to their homes due to their farms, livestock, or fetch personal belongings. Whenever phenomenas like this occur, a person should stay alert and follow the guidelines on what to do if an eruption is ongoing. pisyal na ipinagbabawal na ng administrasyon ng SWU PHINMA ang paggamit ng single-use plastics simula Enero 2020. Bahagi na sa pamumuhay ng bawat magaaral ng SWU ang paggamit ng single-use plastic araw-araw kaya naman nagulantang ang karamihan sa biglaang pagpapahigpit ng administrasyon sa paggamit ng mga ito. Sa unang linggo ng pagpapatupad ng kautusang ito, napilitan ang iilang estudyante at mga guro na itapon ang kanilang mga nadalang plastic water bottle sa basurahan upang makapasok sa gate ng paaralan. Kapansin-pansin na higit na nagugulumihan ang karamihan sa kung ano ang single-use plastic at kung bakit ipinaghihigpit ng administrasyon ang paggamit sa mga ito. Ang single-use plastics ay ang mga plastik na kalimitang itinatapon matapos gamitin. Iilan sa mga halimbawa nito ay ang plastic bottle,
sachets, at cellophane. Kagaya ng iba pang plastik, matagal at umaabot ng mahigit 1000 taon para ito ay mabulok. Ang kilusang ipinatupad ng administrasyon ng SWU PHINMA ay tumutugon sa tumataas na bilang ng basurang plastik sa bansa. Layon ng paaralan na tulungan ang komunidad sa pagpapababa ng antas ng problema sa basura. Ani pa ni Sandyliz Joy Talam ng Grade 12 STEM 6, “Lindot kaayo ang intention sa plastic ban pero lisud kaayo matuman kay mao nay naandan sa kadaghanan”. Mahirap at imposible man ang pagbabawal sa paggamit ng mga plastic bottle at iba pang single use plastic, unti-unti na rin itong nakasanayan ng mga estudyante at mga guro. Bagaman sinimulan ang pagpapatupad ng Plastic Ban na ito ng maayos, nawa’y ito ay hindi sawayin sa pagdaan pa ng mahabang panahon.
Hagupit ng Bagong Dekada agal ng mahigit dalawang linggo. Bagaman napapadpad sa rehiyon ang maiinit na simoy ng hangin mula sa karagatan, nahihirapan ang mga bumbero at lokal na pamahalaan doon na patayin ang apoy. Isang linggo bago pa matapos ang Enero, nagkaroon pa ng Locust Infestation sa Africa kung saan milyun-milyong ari-arian sa agrikultura ang nasira dahil sa pamemeste ng mga locust. Mahigit isang dekada na ang nakalilipas nang nagkaroon din ng ganitong insidente subalit ang naitalang kaso na ito ay nakakabahala. Simula pa lang ng taon ay marami ng hindi kaaya-ayang mga pangyayari ang naganap. Walang sinuman ang gustong may maagnas ng buhay, mawalan ng pamilya at magdusa sa mga sakuna na dagliang sumusulpot kahit saan. Ang dekada kayang ito ang magiging sanhi ng ating pagbabago tungo sa mas maliwanag na kinabukasan o ito kaya ang magtatapos sa buong sangkatauhan?

Isang maaliwalas na araw ang sumalubong sa lahat ng mga mag-aaral at panauhin na naging sanhi sa kanila upang hindi sila mawalan ng ganang tunghayan at palakasin ang loob ng mga atleta na kanilang iniidolo. Unang araw pa lamang ng nasabing torneyo ay damang dama na ng mga manlalaro ang kaba at pag-aalinlangan na kanilang makakatagpo sa kinakaharap ng bawat laro. Sa limang strand na nagsal-pukan ay nangibabaw ang STEM sa bawat larangan ng akademiks mula sa pagsulat ng sanaysay hanggang sa quiz bowl sa matematika at siyensya.
