As we turn the page into May, we are proud to join with communities across the country in celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week, May 3–9, 2026. This annual recognition highlights the powerful role travel plays in strengthening our economy, enriching our communities, and connecting people in meaningful ways.

At Southwest TN Tourism Association, this week is more than a celebration—it’s a reminder of why we do what we do. Travel is a family road trip that becomes a story told for decades. It’s the shared experiences that bring people closer together and create lasting memories. Simply put, Travel is Essential.

The travel industry continues to be one of Southwest Tennessee’s most powerful engines of growth and prosperity. In our region it generates $497,563,900 in annual economic output, supports 3,914 jobs, and contributes nearly $50,800,000 in state and local tax revenue. We see firsthand how tourism supports local businesses, fuels community development, and showcases the unique character of our region.

Participating in National Travel and Tourism Week allows us to celebrate the businesses and individuals who make each community a competitive, world-class destination for domestic and international visitors alike.

We are also excited to announce our upcoming marketing campaign, “Appetite for Adventure.” In partnership with B3 Creative Agency, this initiative will highlight the rich flavors and unforgettable experiences that define our region. Invited guests will be showcasing the unique blend of local cuisine and outdoor adventure that make Southwest Tennessee a must-visit destination.

We look forward to gathering with our partners and leaders at the upcoming Legislative Picnic on May 6th at Lone Oaks Farm. This event provides a valuable opportunity to celebrate our shared successes and continue advocating for the importance of tourism across our region. Thank you for being part of our journey and for helping us share the story of Southwest Tennessee. Together, we will continue to inspire travel, support our communities, and build a vibrant future for tourism.

Hangout on the Hatchie Trails Returns June 13, 2026 for

a Morning of Outdoor Adventure & Community

Get ready to hit the trails and celebrate community, history, and the great outdoors at Hangout on the Hatchie Trails, happening Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 8 AM to 12 PM on the scenic Rockin’ Roll Hatchie Trails in Brownsville, Tennessee.

Hosted by Main Street Brownsville, Visit Brownsville, Haywood County, Haywood Heritage Foundation, Brownsville Haywood County Chamber of Commerce, and the Tennessee Trails Association, this family-friendly event invites participants of all ages to run, bike, or hike at their own pace while enjoying one of West Tennessee’s most unique outdoor experiences.

Set against the backdrop of Haywood County’s natural beauty, the event also serves as a local celebration of America 250, honoring the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Participants will experience six miles of beautiful single-track trails, ideal for biking, hiking, and running. The morning will include group hikes, group runs, and plenty of opportunities for memorable photos along the trail.

To keep things cool and festive, attendees can enjoy watermelon, popsicles, and refreshing treats, along with a complimentary box lunch and event t-shirt for registered participants.

11:00 AM – America 250 Commemoration

Organizers encourage attendees to make a full day of it by exploring more of what Brownsville has to offer. After the event, visitors can venture out to the nearby Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge for a scenic 20-mile gravel loop ride or a peaceful visit to O’Neal Lake. Downtown Brownsville also offers a variety of shopping, local dining, coffee shops, and sweet treats to round out the day.

LEGEND OF SOUTHWEST TENNESSEE

Southwest Tennessee is more than a place; it’s a living story shaped by the people who have carried its voice far beyond county lines. Across Chester, Decatur, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, McNairy, and Madison counties, generations have produced individuals whose talent and determination have left a lasting imprint on American culture. The “Legends of Southwest Tennessee” series exists to honor those individuals, and this month, we proudly spotlight one of the region’s most influential voices: Eddy Arnold.

From Farm Fields to Fame

Born Richard Edward Arnold on May 15, 1918, on a farm near Henderson in Chester County, Tennessee, Eddy Arnold’s story is deeply rooted in the soil of Southwest Tennessee The son of a fiddler, he learned guitar at a young age and developed a love for music while still in elementary school. Life wasn’t easy Arnold left school early to help support his family, often traveling to local barn dances on the back of a mule. But even then, his talent was undeniable. In 1936, Arnold made his radio debut in Jackson, Tennessee, a pivotal moment that set his career in motion. Soon after, he secured regular radio work in Memphis, steadily building a name for himself across the region.

The Rise of the “Tennessee Plowboy”

Arnold’s big break came in the early 1940s when he joined Pee Wee King’s Golden West Cowboys, earning exposure on the legendary Grand Ole Opry. From there, his career skyrocketed. Known as the “Tennessee Plowboy,” Arnold became one of country music’s first true superstars. What set him apart was his ability to blend traditional country with smooth pop elements—helping create what would later become known as the Nashville Sound.

Eddy’s music dominated charts in the 1940s and again in the 1960s, bridging generations and genres.

Timeless Hits That Crossed Boundaries

Arnold’s catalog is filled with songs that defined an era and continue to resonate today. His 1955 hit “Cattle Call” became his signature tune, while songs like:

· “Tennessee Stud”

· “Casey Jones”

· “Bouquet of Roses” “Make the World Go Away”

· “I Really Don’t Want to Know”

· “You Don’t Know Me” showcased his unmatched ability to deliver emotion through song. His influence reached far beyond country music. Artists like Elvis Presley, Martina McBride, and Carrie Underwood have all recorded or performed his work, proving the lasting power of his music.

A Legacy of Influence

Arnold’s success wasn’t just measured in hits—it was measured in impact

· One of the most charting artists in country music history

· Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966

Ranked among the greatest country artists of all time

His crossover appeal helped open doors for future stars like Kenny Rogers, proving that country music could reach mainstream audiences without losing its soul

He didn’t just sing songs, he told stories of love, longing, and life in a way that connected with millions He passed away on May 8, 2008, just days before his 90th birthday, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists and audiences alike.

From a farm in Chester County to stages across the world, Eddy Arnold’s journey is a testament to the talent and spirit that define Southwest Tennessee He wasn’t just a country star—he was a pioneer, a bridge between genres, and a voice that carried the heart of a region to the world. As we celebrate the Legends of Southwest Tennessee, Eddy Arnold stands as a shining example of how small-town roots can grow into global influence, reminding us all that Southwest Tennessee truly is a place of small towns and big stories.

A bold, immersive experience filled with handcrafted art, bizarre collectibles, live wrestling, and unique vendors. This free, all-ages event invites you into a world where the strange and spectacular collide.

June 5 (5–7:30 PM) First Friday Art Walk – Jackson Walk Stroll through downtown, explore local businesses like Garner Blue, The Yellow Canary, The LIFT, and Grubbs Grocery, and enjoy live music, food trucks, and activities for all ages. Learn more via Jackson Arts Council.
