Becca Platt Sutton’s story is one many in McNairy County can relate to; rooted in home, shaped by life elsewhere, and ultimately drawn back to where it all began. A proud McNairy County native and 2011 graduate, Becca spent years away before returning in 2023. What she found wasn’t just familiarity, it was opportunity.
Alongside her husband Justin and their three-year-old daughter Nova, Becca has re-established her life in McNairy County with purpose and passion. And in a short time, she’s made a meaningful impact.
In July 2024, Becca, along with friend and business partner Taylor Horton, opened Moody Cat Coffee Shop in Selmer. What began as an idea quickly became a thriving local favorite. With its cozy, eclectic atmosphere and welcoming spirit, Moody Cat is more than just a place to grab coffee, it’s a space built on connection.
“At Moody Cat we provide specialty coffee in an accepting, cozy and eclectic environment. Our goal is to provide more jobs for our community and to take part in more community events in and out of the shop.”
But Becca’s influence doesn’t stop at the coffee bar. She’s also the energetic force behind Fueled Fempire Dance Fitness, a growing fitness community she leads at Lambert Sport Performance and Fitness in Selmer. Her return to McNairy County wasn’t without hesitation. Like many, she once believed leaving meant never coming back. But through a shift in perspective, she discovered something powerful: the ability to shape her environment rather than simply accept it.
“The only way I could fully embrace coming back was by deciding to build something I felt was missing. Something that could bring energy, opportunity, and connection to the community.”
Today, Becca Platt Sutton is doing exactly that, creating spaces, building community, and inspiring others to take ownership of their dreams right here at home.

A lifelong McNairy County native, Shelbe represents what many are calling the "NOW Generation", young entrepreneurs, professionals, and community leaders who are choosing to build their lives, careers, and businesses right here at home rather than waiting for someone else to shape the future of their community. Shelbe and her husband, Hunter Thomas, are among a growing number of young residents who understand that strong communities don't happen by accident. Just eight months ago, Shelbe opened Chip's Corner Coffee in Adamsville. As owner and barista, her goal is simple: continue growing her business while creating a welcoming place for residents and visitors alike. While a coffee shop may seem like a small piece of the economic puzzle, local businesses are often the foundation of a thriving c ommunity They create jobs, keep dollars circulating locally, provide gathering places, and help define the character of a town.
"Small businesses are the heartbeat of rural communities," Shelbe said through her actions and commitment. By choosing entrepreneurship, she is helping strengthen Adamsville's economy while creating opportunities for connection and community. When she isn't serving customers, Shelbe enjoys fishing, hunting, and spending time with family. She also gives back by helping coach Adamsville High School softball, investing in the next generation of young women and student-athletes.
Her commitment to service reflects a belief that community involvement matters just as much as business success Shelbe believes women play a critical role in creating stronger communities.
"It is important because we bring valuable perspectives, compassion, and strong connections to families and local networks," she said. "Our involvement helps strengthen organizations, support those in need, and create positive change. When women step up to serve and lead, we also become role models for younger generations, showing the importance of giving back and using our gifts to make their communities stronger."
Those words capture exactly why the NOW Generation is so important to McNairy County's future.

As McNairy County looks toward the future, the continued growth and success of communities like Adamsville will depend on encouraging and supporting more members of the NOW Generation people willing to dream, serve, lead, and build where they live. Because when young leaders like Shelbe choose to invest in their hometown, they aren't simply growing a business. They're helping grow a stronger community for everyone. Note: In the last week Shelbe announced that she is expanding café hours from 6:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. The café is open from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
