Well, Spring has sprung once again, and we have certainly been blessed with some good weather lately. This year's extended winter has given us milder temperatures to enjoy as the busy festival season begins. We certainly love the music, crawfish, and dancing that this season brings to Louisiana.

Another part of the celebration this May revolves around our moms. And, there is no one more deserving to honor in May and all year round. For me, it is the memory of steady hands guiding mine, offering wonderful words of encouragement exactly when I needed them. So, to all the mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and mother-figures among our readers, this month is a reminder that your care echoes farther than you may ever see. The patience you give, the lessons you share, and the love you offer often become part of someone else’s strength. Bubbly on the Bayou

With champagne sparkling and a strong sense of community, the 16th annual Bubbly on the Bayou celebrated generosity, purpose, and hope. Hosted at Patton’s and presented by Keesler Federal Credit Union, the Kentucky Derby–themed brunch brought together supporters from across St. Tammany Parish for a memorable and meaningful event benefiting , a United Way of Southeast Louisiana Partner Agency.

Guests enjoyed live jazz by Bobby Ohler, festive décor, and plenty of bubbly poured by celebrity bartenders, including Parish President Mike Cooper, Slidell Mayor Randy Fandal, Sheriff Randy Smith, Fire Chief Chris Kaufmann, and City Marshal Kevin Foltz. Becky Fos served as Honorary Chair, while WGNO meteorologist Natalie Parsons kept the energy lively throughout the event.

Committee member JoAnn Chelchowski noted that every detail reflected the community’s commitment to ensuring children and families have access to safe, high-quality early childhood education. Proceeds from the event directly support Rainbow’s mission to provide affordable childcare, early learning opportunities, and essential family services. For many parents, the center is a lifeline—enabling them to work, continue their education, and build stable futures.

Executive Director Dionne Graham highlighted both ongoing challenges and meaningful progress, noting that rising costs and increased demand make community support more critical than ever. Event Chair Ellen Lamarque emphasized the power of collective action, saying the event demonstrates what’s possible when a community invests in its children.

As committee member Linda Larkin shared, supporting early childhood education strengthens families, builds community, and creates a brighter future for all.

At Art of the Cocktail 2026, guests enjoyed a lively cocktail tasting event featuring innovative concoctions crafted by participating bars and restaurants from across the region, each competing for the title of crowd favorite. Taking place at the Hammond Regional Arts Center, the evening blends spirited competition with community celebration—all in support of the arts in Tangipahoa Parish.

Frozen Watermelon Margarita

Serves 2-4

4-5 cups cubed seedless watermelon, frozen

1/2 cup silver (blanco) tequila

1/4 cup fresh lime juice

2 tbsp agave nectar or simple syrup (optional, adjust for sweetness)

1 cup ice (optional, for thicker consistency)

Salt or Tajín for rimming, Lime wheels for garnish

Cut watermelon into cubes and freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight until solid. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glasses and dip in salt or Tajín. Combine the frozen watermelon, tequila, lime juice, agave, and ice in a high-speed blender. Blend on high until the mixture is smooth and slushy. Pour immediately into prepared glasses and garnish with lime.

Tips:

Using frozen watermelon instead of just ice ensures a sweeter, more intense flavor that isn't diluted.

Blanco or silver tequila works best because it has a mild flavor that pairs well with the fruit.

If your watermelon isn't very sweet, add an extra tablespoon of agave nectar.

Grilled Salmon

Serves 4

4 6-8 ounce skin-on salmon fillets, about 1-inch thick

2 tablespoons grape seed oil

2 teaspoons kosher salt

2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

1 lemon , cut into wedges

Prepare the grill for direct cooking over high heat, 450°F550°F. Brush the cooking grates clean and close the lid to heat.

Generously coat the flesh side of the salmon fillets with oil and season evenly with kosher salt and black pepper. Grill the salmon skin side down over direct high heat with the lid closed for about 6-8 minutes or until the fish lightens in color, becomes more firm to the touch and you can lift the fillets off the cooking grates without them sticking.

Turn the salmon over, close the lid, and cook to 130°F for about 2-4 minutes for medium rare or longer to desired doneness. Transfer to a platter to rest for 1-2 minutes. Slide the salmon skin from the fillets and serve with wedges of lemon and tartar or cucumber dill sauce.

This experience has been extremely valuable when helping sellers determine how to make the best presentation to help buyers make an emotional connection to their home. Although my work as a faux painter brought joy to my clients, I wanted the challenge of something more meaningful. For years I was encouraged to pursue real estate by friends who saw the benefits of my background in business, sales, and decorating. Taking their advice was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The Youth Service Bureau's 42nd Annual Chef Soiree was an unforgettable evening, welcoming over 3100 guests under beautiful spring skies at Bogue Falaya Park.  For the first time ever, the Banner Ford car raffle sold out completely!

This celebration would not have been possible without the incredible restaurants and beverage providers who are the backbone of Chef Soiree.  These restaurants, along with our generous sponsors, dedicated volunteers and our valued trade-out partners, made this event a success.  It was a powerful reflection of how our community comes together to support the Youth Service Bureau as well as the children and families we serve.  The funds raised directly support the YSB's vital programs which include CASA, Crossroads, Families in Need of Services (FINS), Options and Truancy.

Art Imitates Life

The Covington Public Art Fund is proud to announce Art Imitates Life, a year-long public art exhibition featuring 15 life-sized painted bronze sculptures by renowned American artist Seward Johnson. The sculptures arrived on March 30, and the exhibit will be on display from April 2026 through April 2027 across several Northshore communities, including Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Madisonville, and Olde Towne Slidell.

The Covington Public Art Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the community's cultural landscape by raising funds to support the installation and display of public art throughout St. Tammany Parish.

On loan from the Seward Johnson Atelier, the sculptures are celebrated worldwide for their remarkable realism and their ability to capture familiar moments from everyday life. Johnson’s work invites viewers to step into scenes that feel instantly recognizable, such as children playing, couples dancing, neighbors chatting, or a quiet moment on a park bench. His work creates an immersive experience that blends art with the rhythm of daily life.

“As a founding member of the Covington Public Art Fund, we believe public art adds depth, beauty, and connection to a community,” said Lisa Condrey Ward, owner of the Southern

Paint the City Pink

The second annual Paint the City Pink event was a tremendous success. The Madison Brooks Foundation was established following the tragic loss of LSU student Madison Brooks, with a mission rooted in protection, awareness, and hope. Since its founding, Ashley Baustert-Madi's mother and the foundation's founder- has worked tirelessly to ensure her daughter's legacy creates meaningful change. Through scholarships and strategic partnerships focused on safety, the foundation is committed to preventing others from experiencing similar tragedies.

This year's event raised $35,000, with proceeds supporting scholarship funds at SSA and LSU, as well as benefiting The Safe Bar

Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to training alcohol-serving establishments in safe practices and bystander intervention.

"This work is critical in prevention" said Baustert. "By investing in education and safety training, we are taking meaningful steps to protect others and honor Madi's legacy."

Menopause—usually occurring between ages 45 and 55—is the time when the ovaries stop producing estrogen. The average age in the U.S. is 51. As estrogen declines, many women experience hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems, mood changes, fatigue, vaginal dryness, and difficulty concentrating. Over time, low estrogen also accelerates bone loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. For many women, these changes significantly affect quality of life.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), also known as Menopausal Hormone Therapy, replenishes estrogen to relieve symptoms and support long-term health. Women with a uterus need progesterone along with estrogen to prevent endometrial cancer, while women without a uterus typically take estrogen alone. Estrogen effectively improves hot flashes, sleep, mood, bone density, and vaginal health. Progesterone protects the uterus but slightly reduces the cardiovascular benefits of estrogen-only therapy.

The Timing Hypothesis shows that starting estrogen therapy within 10 years of menopause or before age 60 may reduce the risk of heart attack or cardiovascular death by 25% to 50%. Estrogen helps by improving cholesterol balance, increasing blood vessel flexibility, reducing inflammation, and slowing early plaque development. Adding progesterone softens these

benefits, while progesterone alone offers no heart protection.

Hormone therapy does carry risks. Oral estrogen increases clot risk two- to three-fold by stimulating clotting proteins in the liver, while transdermal estrogen (patch, gel, spray) does not significantly increase clotting risk. Estrogen increases stroke risk by 20% to 30%, especially after age 60. Combination therapy increases this risk slightly more. Transdermal estrogen paired with micronized progesterone has the safest overall profile. Breast cancer risk depends largely on the type of progesterone used. Estrogen-only therapy lowers breast cancer risk by 20% to 30%. Micronized (bioidentical) progesterone is neutral, while synthetic progestins modestly increase risk, especially with long-term use. The form of estrogen delivery does not meaningfully change breast cancer risk.

Transdermal estrogen is preferred for cardiovascular safety, while oral estrogen remains effective but increases liver-driven clotting proteins. Progesterone is typically taken orally, with micronized progesterone being the safest option. Vaginal estrogen is reserved for local symptoms such as dryness or painful intercourse and does not treat whole-body estrogen deficiency.

Hormone therapy can significantly improve quality of life and may protect heart and bone health when started early. Because progesterone affects some benefits and each therapy carries its own risks, women should work with their gynecologist and primary care physician to choose the safest and most effective approach.

Two STPPS Educators Advance In State Awards Competitions

The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) selected two educators in St. Tammany Parish Public School System (STPPS) to advance in Louisiana state-level award programs. Mandeville Junior High Principal Gina Brown has been named a 2026-2027 Principal of the Year Semifinalist and Fontainebleau High Teacher Katie Weber has been named a 2026-2027 New Teacher of the Year Finalist.

Gina Brown is among 24 principals selected to continue in the competition for Louisiana Principal of the Year. She brings more than 20 years of experience in education to her role. She began her journey in STPPS as a math teacher at Covington High School in 2006 before moving into administration as assistant principal at Mandeville Junior High in 2015. In 2020, she was named principal, where she continues to lead with purpose and vision.

“Gina does an incredible job at Mandeville Junior High and launches excellence every day,” said Superintendent Frank Jabbia. “It’s an incredible honor to have her continue

on in the competition and represent our amazing school district.”

The Louisiana Department of Education will announce the finalists for Principal of the Year in May.

Katie Weber is among nine firstyear classroom teachers selected to continue in the competition for Louisiana New Teacher of the Year. She teaches ninth-grade English at Fontainebleau High School and is a proud product of STPPS, having graduated from Lakeshore High School. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts in English and her Master of Arts in English Literature from The University of Southern Mississippi.

“I can’t say enough about the difference Katie is already making with our students in just her first year teaching,” said Superintendent Frank Jabbia. “This recognition is a tremendous honor and an inspiration for our entire school system.”

Both the Louisiana Principal of the Year and New Teacher of the Year will be announced at the Educator Excellence Awards Gala in New Orleans this summer.

WYES NORTHSHORE SPRING FLING was held on March 26th, at the beautiful Covington home of Tanya and Trevor Walker, where guests gathered to celebrate the season in style. Attendees wore their florals and bow ties for a festive evening while they sipped, savored, and socialized in support of WYES.

The event was led by event co-chairs Michelle Mayne, Emmett G. Dupas, and hosts Tanya and Trevor Walker. Honorary chairs Vince Liuzza, Frank Stuart, Shelley Winstead, and Guy Winstead lent their support.

Guests enjoyed cuisine from Bonanno’s Catering, refreshing drinks courtesy of Acquistapace’s, and irresistible sweet treats from Lucy Lee’s Confectionery. Villere's Florist provided arrangements, while guests were welcomed by the Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts and Ballet Apetrei. The lively sounds of pop swing band Annabelle & The Bombays kept the celebration going throughout the evening. A highlight of the SPRING FLING was the silent auction, which featured a selection of fabulous art and unique treasures, led by auction co-chairs Bethany Boice and Caroline France.

Commander John B. Wells Awarded DAR Medal of Honor

Commander John B. Wells, U.S. Navy (Ret.), received the DAR Medal of Honor from the Louisiana Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution at its 117th State Conference in Alexandria on March 20. Established in 1942, the award recognizes exceptional leadership, patriotism, and service.

Nominated by the Wharton Chapter, Wells was honored for both his military and civilian contributions. He served more than 20 years as a naval officer, with deployments across the Mediterranean, Western Pacific, North Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and Persian Gulf, demonstrating consistent leadership and commitment.

After retiring, Wells earned his law degree and focused on advocating for veterans and service members, often through pro bono work. His efforts have addressed access to benefits, toxic exposure claims, and systemic issues within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

He is the founder and Executive Director of Military-Veterans Advocacy, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to legal advocacy and policy work. His work has expanded healthcare access and recognition for veterans affected by toxic exposures, including Agent Orange and burn pits. Notably, he helped secure benefits for about 90,000 Blue Water Navy veterans.

In addition to his legal work, Wells has supported veterans’ treatment courts and volunteered extensively. He called the award an honor and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring veterans receive the care and benefits they have earned.
