Blair Alford is a realist. Having practiced law for nearly two decades, with the majority of that time spent as a violent crimes prosecutor, it is no surprise she is abundantly aware that bad things happen in the world. However, she is also a firm believer that everyone can do their part to help make the world a better place. Ever since finding her voice

Growing up in what she describes as a “huge Cajun-French family” no doubt helped prepare her for addressing juries in courtrooms full of people during high-profile cases. “We had 75 people at our family Thanksgiving last year,” she says laughing. “And that’s just those who could make it.” She and her husband John lead by example and are raising their four children, William (11), Andie (9),

East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity is celebrating 10 years of

The 2026 Rosies Women Build was another great volunteer and fundraising effort for East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity, thanks to the generosity of hundreds of sponsors and the hard work of the Rosie volunteers. Habitat is able to keep their construction labor costs to a minimum because of volunteers. Women have always been willing volunteers for Habitat affiliates throughout the world; however, many of them felt underutilized on the Habitat build sites because of their lack of knowledge and skill. Within a male-dominated construction industry, women wanted to do more, they just didn’t know how. The Habitat for Humanity Women Build Program began in 1992 with two women from North Carolina who wanted to do more to help Habitat. They encouraged their local Habitat affiliate to have one week each year when only women would work on the Habitat jobsite. From there, Habitat affiliates across the country developed National Women Build Week. The program empowers women by helping them learn the skills needed to not only be a productive Habitat volunteer, but also an independent homeowner. This is especially significant because the majority of Habitat homeowners in our area are single women, many of them single mothers. Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Their mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. 34 Sophisticated Woman | August 2026

Decent, stable, affordable housing provides more than just a roof over someone’s head. It provides stability for families and children. It provides a sense of dignity and pride. It offers the opportunity for better health, physical safety and security. Statistically, children raised in stable home environments attain higher levels of education, have better job prospects, and earn more money as adults. Habitat for Humanity believes that increasing the affordable housing supply across the globe is essential if we are to succeed in the fight against poverty. Habitat has more than 1,400 local affiliates in the U.S. They have helped 6.8 million people improve their living conditions since their founding in 1976. Habitat helps by building or renovating simple, decent houses in partnership with those in need. A common misconception is that Habitat homes are free. Habitat homes are NOT free. The Habitat families are given a “hand up, not a hand out.” Habitat families are required to have decent credit, steady employment or income, and be willing to partner with Habitat. Homeowners pay a mortgage, along with an escrow for insurance and taxes, just like any other homeowner. The difference is in the Habitat family partnership. Qualifying families are required to complete Financial Fitness courses and work a minimum of 250 sweat-equity hours on a Habitat home (theirs or another family’s that is being built). In exchange

for this, Habitat waives the down payment and mortgages the home at a low or 0% interest rate. Because East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity is not only the construction company, but also the mortgage lender, there is a tremendous amount of upfront costs. And, like all non-profits, Habitat is always fundraising in order to help more people achieve the dream of home ownership. That’s how the Rosie program began! The Rosie program has become so popular through social media that many people think there are Rosie programs all over the country. Nope! The Rosie program was created in 2016 by EST Habitat Executive Director Kentrell Jones, photographer Julie Wood, and volunteer Kendra Davis. The beautiful ladies you’ll see on the following pages are unique to just East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity. The Rosie Program was designed to achieve 4 things: 1.) Fundraising The Rosie Program is the largest fundraiser for EST Habitat for Humanity. Each Rosie is required to donate or be sponsored for a minimum of $500. This is part of what sets the Rosies apart from all other Habitat volunteers (there is no fee to volunteer for Habitat at any other time). Some Rosies are “Rockstar Rosies” because they raised $1000 or more this year. You’ll see these outstanding gals marked with a red star on the following pages. Double Rockstar Rosies have raised $1500 or more! In the past 10 years, the Rosies have raised more than $700,000 for East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity! 2.) Volunteers Habitat needs the volunteer labor force the Rosies provide in order to minimize their labor expenses to save on the cost of building the home, which brings down the cost of the homeowners' mortgages. Many of the Rosies will continue to volunteer throughout the year, helping Habitat build more homes more quickly. Once these ladies are bitten by the building bug, they’re hooked! 3.) Female Empowerment and Independence The Rosie Program is the first introduction to using tools such as drills and saws for many of the female volunteers. Even if the women don’t plan on doing construction tasks in the future, they will have gained the knowledge and sense of accomplishment that comes from learning a new skill. After all, the Rosie motto is WE CAN DO IT!

4. Awareness Once the Rosies build on a home and learn more about Habitat, they become Habitat ambassadors out in the community. This allows Habitat to serve more people, raise more funds, and break the cycle of poverty in our region. Rosie Team Leaders recruit women to be on their team, with each one of them donating their time and funds to Habitat. All Rosie teams choose a name beginning with an “R”. Some of the teams this year were the Regal Rosies, Remarkable Rosies, Rebellious Rosies, Robust Rosies, and more, as you’ll see on the following pages. This year, EST Habitat was excited to welcome their first-ever Junior Rosie team. This team comprised of 16-18 year old girls was the brainchild of Jennifer Abney, a local photographer and Rosie. Jennifer recruited, photographed and led the Junior Rosies in refurbishing five playhouses that made up a Children's Christmas Village at Heritage Park as part of the City of Slidell's Christmas celebration. Jennifer and Habitat hope to expand the Junior Rosie Program into all of the high schools of eastern St. Tammany Parish. The 2026 Rosie teams worked on three separate build sites over a period of six weeks. In addition to the playhouses in Heritage Park, the Rosies worked in the Alton community, where EST Habitat is building two homes next to each other. The Rosies did outside work on one (installing Hardie board siding) on sunny days; and inside work on the other (installing 2x4 stud spacers) on rainy days. The Resourceful Rosie team had a special mission in the Lincoln Park community as they helped with an interior demolition on a Habitat volunteer's home that had been partially destroyed by fire. In total, over 163 Rosies volunteered their labor and raised more than $105,000!!! Talk about girl power! This year, to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Rosie Program, the 2026 Rosies sold raffle tickets for a chance to win $10,000. The raffle drawing was held on May 31 at the annaul Rosie Wrap-Up & Awards ceremony. Congratulations to Rosie Mary Christopher for buying the winning ticket! The initial goal of the Rosie Program was to benefit East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity, but what has grown from the Rosie program stretches far beyond that. The sisterhood is strong, as you will see on the following pages. The Rosies are dynamic and fun, they work hard, and they have an indomitable determination to make our community and our world a better place to live. WE CAN BUILD IT! Often called the “favorite team” by their fellow Rosies, the Refreshment Rosies were created in 2022 to obtain sponsors and donations for the breakfasts, snacks, lunches, and drinks for all of the Rosie teams.

These dynamic ladies approach dozens of local businesses and individuals to request food or monetary donations in support of the Habitat mission. The response is always overwhelming! By the end of the 2026 Rosie Build, the Refreshment Rosies had supplied 19 teams with over 200 lunches, breakfasts, snacks, and drinks to keep the Rosies and Habitat staff fed and fueled while they worked on the job sites.
