A complete different world, but one where you can talk with the locals in your own language. This scenario can only be experienced in the pristine natural landscape of the Upper Suriname. A trip to the pristine interior of Suriname is the highlight of every vacation to Suriname. Along the river The Upper Suriname river region starts south at the Lake Brokopondo. Officially part of District Sipaliwini, the Saramaccans have their own system of governance. A Granman is recognized as the chief of the region and assigns Head Captain and Basha’s to manage the villages. In the Upper Suriname area, there are aproxiamately 18,000 inhabitants. The Upper Suriname river winds like a snake through

the green landscape of the Amazon basin. At some places the river is interrupted by wild water rapids, that reach upwards of one meter in height. There are villages along the river where you will find women doing laundry and dishes on the river banks, children enjoying a swim in the crisp water and men attempting to outwit an Ajamaja fish. Kingfishers and Green Herons are aplenty, diving regulary into the river for their food eating the small fish. Self planning A trip to the interior can be easily planned by yourself. Simply choose for one or more of the many lodges you will find in this publication and go and enjoy the nature. To reach your destination, you can fly or travel over land and water via bus and boat. • Blue Wings Airlines has flights scheduled every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. • Local busses depart every morning at 8:00AM and 8:30AM to Atjoni. Local boatmen depart daily throughout the day to every destination along the Upper Suriname River. • A phone call to the local lodge owner/manager is all it takes to arrange everything. Later in this travel guide, you will find detailed information about all of the possibilities. … Or you may also choose to use a tour operator or travel agency for your planning. Most tour operators offer individual travel packages into the interior. Prices vary and can sometimes be quite expensive, but they will make all of the arrangements for you.

Welcome in the Upper Surinam

Saramaccan people, inhabitants of the Upper Suriname Region The Saramaccan people belongs to the oldest Maroon communities of Suriname. In the early 18th century, the first slaves fled their plantations and around 1750, created the first settlements along the Upper Suriname River. The peace agreement of 1762 with the Dutch government gave the Saramaccanen the opportunity to build their society further. They created a stable community in which African, Indigenous and European elements find a place. The Saramaccan language is even now a mix of African, Dutch, Portuguese, English and Indigenous words. In the 20th century, the construction of the Afobaka Dam (Brokopondo Lake) and the civil war between the Bouterse regime and jungle commandos of Ronnie Brunswick has left behind deep scars to the community. A Sarramaacen Village Missionaries from the past have left behind much of their influences and teachings. The region is abound with a mix of Catholic, Protestant and non-Christian faiths, but traditionaly, the villages live together as one. The villages give somewhat a messy impression, which is apparent because the homes are built very closely to each other. Wooden homes are decorated with elaborate carvings and often with a thatched roof. A family clan «lo» usually live together in a cluster of houses and barns. At the entrance of the village, there is a gateway «azan pau» made of palm leaves that keeps out evil influences. In strategic places, there are monuments for offerings for the village ancestors «faaka pau". Tropical rainforest Just outside the villages, the tropical rainforest begins. This northern part of the Amazon basin has a unique biodiversity. The Saramaccan rainforest has the highest density of jaguars in the world, however, the chances are slim that you will encounter the shy «tigri» in its natural environment; but with an experienced guide and some luck, who knows. Monkeys are everywhere! The cries of the howler monkeys can be heard for miles. Groups of spider monkeys, «kwatas», can often be seen swinging through the treetops. Bird watching is difficult in the dense tropical rainforest. From everywhere, you will hear 4

the sound of Piha, the "jungle police», with its characteristic cry of alarm. Along the river, Kingfishers, toucans, swallow-tailed Kites and Caracara's are aplenty; and once in a while, you will find the majestic Harpie Eagle circling the forest. The first thing you notice when you enter the dense tropical rainforest is the small amount of sunlight that makes its way through the trees. There are only a few flowers, because flowers need light.

But the sounds, the smells and all the different shades of green make it a magical setting. And the trees are the giants of the forest! A mature Kankan tree may be 60 meters high with wide branches; the Saramaccans believe that the Kankan tree holds magical powers. Between the low ferns you will certainly see poison arrow frogs in bright blues and yellows and the iridescent morpho butterfly along the creeks.

Practical Upper Surinam How to get there

Bus and Boat A trip to the Upper Suriname river region is easy to plan by yourself. However, it is very practical to ask assistance from your lodge owner/manager. The lodge manager knows all of the transportation methods; he will know the reliable taxis and can arrange for your pick up at the hotel or guesthouse in town. More importantly, he knows exactly how to plan the whole trip with efficiency for you which will make your entire experience much more enjoyable. The tour to Upper Suriname begins on Saramacca Street in Paramaribo at the bus stop right across from the Jerusalem Bazaar. Buses, taxis and large trucks leave every morning between 8 and 8:30. The cost will vary from 20 SRD to 70 SRD depending on which method of transportation you choose. On time arrival at the bus stop will assure you of a spot on one of the buses, taxis or trucks. You will travel for 2.5 hours on Afobaka highway to Atjoni, where you will then depart via boat to your lodge. Besides the regular boats, you will find taxi-boats as well who work ÂŤon callÂť and are not always capable of reaching all of the lodges. They are usually twice the price of the regularly scheduled boats but much more comfortable and faster on the water. A general rule of thumb: allow your lodge owner/manager to control most if not all of your traveling advice because they know all of the boatsmen and their schedules and destinations. The journey itself is quite the adventure. Seeing life along the river, chatting with your fellow passengers and the beautiful scenery will leave you lasting memories; and the navigation skills of the boatsmen are awe inspiring at times as they wade through the rapids. There are restaurants available in Atjoni for snacks for your boattrip. A poncho is always usefull due to rain showers and drinking water is a must.

name Best time to travel The climate in Upper Suriname is tropical with high humidity. The short dry season is from February to April; the long rainy season from May to mid-August; the long dry season from mid-August to November followed by a short rainy season in December and January. The months of October through December are the warmest, with temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees. In the rainy season, the night temperature drop to 18 degrees and this is «cold» by Surinamese standards! As in Europe and the rest of the world, it is increasingly difficult to forecast the weather and make a distinction between season. Sometimes, it rains a lot during the ‘dry season’ and sometimes its very hot during the rainy season. Flying Blue Wing Airlines departs three times per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) to Upper Suriname with return flights scheduled for the same day. The airport Zorg & Hoop is located on Doekhieweg 3 in Paramaribo. The plane is scheduled to leave at 11am and sometimes there are short delays. You should arrive at the airport one hour before scheduled departure time. The plane will stops in Laduani, Botopassi and Djumu before it reaches its final destination of Kajana. Combinations and lodge-hopping To reach your destination by flight and return by boat is also possible. Also «from lodge to lodge» you can use the local boatsmen for «river hopping». Take a look at the diagram above to plan your journey. Discuss with your lodge owner/manager, who will be able to assist you in your planning and discuss with you all of the possibilities.

I am here especially for tropical rainforest. So many different trees and types of wood. And the sounds of a howler monkey or a bird fling away is so relaxing. I can easily go hiking with a simple backpack. Everyone wants to help you, you make relationships so easily ...

general info Health According to the WHO, some parts of the interior are still considered prone to malaria. The last official recording of malaria in Upper Suriname was in 2005 according to the website of the WHO. In almost every large village, there is a 24hour medical post offering primary care. The tap water in the lodge is filtered river or rain water which is fine for washing and showering but not to drink. Drinking water is available in all lodges.

Telephone and Internet Almost the entire region has GSM service. Digicel and Telesur offer service via prepaid phone cards and internet via the 2G Network. You may also use your own carrier, but that will be quite expensive with roaming charges.

Electricity Virtually all lodges have electricity transmitted via a generator. The generators are usually running in the evening hours only. Some lodges also have solar panels to service their electrical needs.

Activities Relaxing Nothing beats relaxing on the porch of your cabin on an afternoon watching life and wildnerness pass right by you. Allow the sounds of the jungle and village relax your mind with hot cup of tea or an cold Parbo. Enjoy interacting with the curious children of the village; chat with the women as they take their afternoon trip to the river banks to do the wash; gaze at the Kinfisher as it seeks it’s helping of fish from the river. Hiking in the rainforest Most lodges allow you to take a guided hike through the tropical rainforest. Your guide will carve out a path with his machette and you will get a close up meeting with the unique flora and fauna of the forest. Your guide will point all all of the unique trees of the forrest, poison arrow frogs, listen for the call of the “jungle police” or a agouti running away. Natural Jacuzzi The Upper Suriname River is a river of many sources which is fed through hundreds of creeks. The displacement of the river is quite large and the soil is quite rocky. In many places the river is interrupted by "sulas" or wild rapids. In many of the rapids, a natural whirlpool and slide is created which feels like natural jacuzzi and massage shower. Feel free to enjoy the natural ‘jacuzzi’ or simply float by in your canoe. Experiences the village All lodges offer the opporutity to connect with the local villages via a local tour guide. He shall take you for a stroll through the villages and point out the hommages to their ancestors; the polished pots and pans and meet the village captain. Every village has a ‘ship yard’ where they carve out canoes for the villagers all by hand from the gian Basalokus tree. A visit to the local agricultural plot is always included. Traditional fields, managed by women, grow rice, bean, taher-sheets and other vegetables. A quick trip to the local soccer field and schools and you will have a memorable picture of the village life.

Evening Cayman tours After dinner, you make take a guide and boatsman for some Cayman spotting. They will know all of the places where these little creatures gather and you are sure to see a Spectacled Cayman as well as other nocturnal species. Dance and percussion music Some lodges offer a nightly dance and percussion show. The ‘Seketi’ is a spectacular and exotic group dance that features the local women. The African influences are quite noticeable and a delight. The men will accompany the women with a ‘drum’ band with instruments made from local wood and by hand. Jungle treks One, two or multi-day jungle treks are also offered by some lodges. You will sleep in a ‘jungle’ camp and will require a hammock with a mosquito net. This is a unique way to enjoy the Amazon from within. You will climb over small granite mountains, hike through deep and dense forest and journey along the rapids. Quite the adventure, but always safe and responsible. Maroon museum A Maroon Museum was recently opened in the village of Pikinslee through an inititiave taken by a number of local wood craftsmen from the village; it is entirely run by the local people. It gives a unique insight into the culture, crafts and everyday life of a Maroon village. Several lodges offer the opportunity to visit the wonderful museum.

Activities with villagers Just ask your lodge holder or the manager if you can learn to cut wood and decorate a calabas; if you may spend some time with the women on the farm; if you want to learn how the locals make cassava bread. Your presences is always welcome. Nocturnal caiman adventure 9

Some are even focused on large groups upwards of 125 visitors where you will find sports courts, barbecue area, etc. Some lodges are small and quaint with a very peronsonal feel to it where you can be all alone on a small island or on the edge of a village.

In March 2013, all lodges were visited, photographed and documented in the periodical. From North to South, from Danta Bai near the Brokondo Lake to Kosindo, which is far inland near the Gran Rio. Dantabai Danta Bai, "the sound of the rapids", is really focused on larger groups. It is a large lodge with 5 facilities designed to house 10-15 people and six smaller cabins. You may cook for yourselves in a large kitchen or catered food cooked on site is also available. Dantabai is located on the river but is reachable via road travel. Of particular note, Dantabai is perfect for rafting with its many ‘sulas’. The people of Dantabai are especially keen with rafting and are further well trained. There is a bar available for your evening cocktail or juice to finish off your day.

Djamaika

Djamaika is a large complex and offers different types of accomodations. They have a few traditional huts with shared facilities and also have a large building with hotel-like rooms with private shower/ toilet so you can choose between atmosphere or comfort for the same price. Everything is well done but here and there, there is some character missing. A real family business, the lodge is managed by brother and sister Dono and Yvonne. Their father is the contractor/ builder of the lodge as well as the Captain of the Catholic village JawJaw which is located right around the corner. Andre and Celientje have been active for more than 20 years in the Upper Suriname tourism industry. Isadou is comfortable enough for up to 100 guests making it one of the larger lodging facilities. Lodging includes private cabins with or without your own bathrooms as well as lodging for larger groups. There is also a cooking area for guests who care to prepare their own food. There are plenty of rapids, small and large, where you will be tempted to jump in for a swim. A large lawn will invite you for a friendly football game as well as a round of rounders and volleyball. Nelson Tiapoe built the Kinipaati lodge in 2010 on a beautiful island surrounded with creeks and rapids. Raised in St. Maarten, Nelson returned to his roots to the place where his ancestors came from. Kinipaati is more suitable for small groups whom can stay is a large 3 bedroom family house, a 6 person cabin on the creek or in a room in the barracks. Some facilities have their own shower and bathroom. There is a cozy dining room and bar overlooking the water, however, you must bring your own drinks. Tei Wei Pack your hiking boots because getting to the summit of the Tei Wei “mountain” will take a little time but the view looking down into the forest and rivers will be well worth it. A cassual atmosphere and attentive staff pretty much sums up this lodge. Wally Ajaiso, a prominent member of parliament, is the owner of this lodge and you are assured to see him on the weekends. The World Wildlife Fund has created a beautiful natural trail that leads you several kilometers into the jungle. This trail is situated in Gunsi, a traditional village wherin Tei Wei lies. You may enjoy the trail by yourself or allow for Kwami, the local guide, to take you on a two day hike and camp into the forest. Bathroom facilities are minimal.

Tang Luku Telson Lugard, "Mbe", together with his wife, son and daughters are the owners of this family operated lodge. Tang Luku means "keep looking", and there is actually a lot to see. It is an intriguing sight, from the porch of your cabin, to see the boatsmen making caluculated maneuvers against the current of the mighty rapids. Pasensi is inextricably linked to the Maroon Museum of Pikinslee. Passensi was built by the same artists and woodcarvers who later initiaded the program to build the museum. The whole place has a sense of a one-family atmosphere. As you may be relaxing on your veranda or in your hammock, don’t be surprised is one of your local “neighbor” comes by to invite you to go fishing with him or come lend a hand on the farm. About the Gourd/ Calabas The Calabash tree (Crescentia cujete) is a species of Catalpa family that is native to the Caribbean and Central America and can grow up to 10 m high. The hard shell is widely used for carvings such as pots, saucers, spoons and musical instruments.

About the Authors. In 2012/2013, Maud Bottle and Jan Peter Wiersema spent a little over four months in Upper Suriname. Maud, a former nurse and educator, worked in the healthcare industry as a manager and consultant. Jan Peter spent his career as a consultant and manager for large companies. Since 2006, they have managed and operated their beautiful villa-hotel in the Vosges Mountains, www.villamoncoeur.nl, during the months of April until November and in the winter, they globe-trot around the globe enjoying their life and volunteering along the way. One of their projects that came to mind was to draft this newsletter to let the world know about the adventures of Upper Suriname and in April, 2013, this objective was achieved.

Foundation of Upper Suriname Lodge Holders LBS All resorts are organized in accordance to the regulations set forth by the Foundation for the development of sustainable tourism aimed at the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the communities along the Upper Suriname River.

«Together we are stronger!»

The concept of the LBS originated in 2006 after the interior was faced with massive flooding. Encouraged by the support of the Ministry of Communication and Tourism, Alice Amafo installed Frans Dinge and Waldi Ajaiso as the leaders along with Mr. Hugo Jabini and Ms. Brigitte Kuechler to form the foundation with the purpose of forming an alliance between all lodge owners in the area. The foundation was officially founded on August 14, 2008 and the Foundation Lodge Holders Upper Suriname was conceived. The LBS primarily addresses common issues facing individual tourism business and their camps and equally important is the encouragement for mutual cooperation in a coordinated manner to improve competitiveness. The clustering of the lodges and business owners has allowed the LBS to the spokesperson on behalf of the lodges when in conversation/negotiations with the government, financial institutions, investors, research and educational facilities. The individual lodge owners came to understand their personal business was too small to effectively address many of the issues that plague the industry.

This collaboration has already proved to be fruitful. Some concrete results have already come to fruition such as an operational website, a photo book and promotional material such as t-shirts, posters and banners. This guide book is the most recent succesful initiative. The LBS stays true to its motto, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. By staying true to this motto, the LBS has been able to achieve much more than the initiative of each individual lodge holder. The goal of the LBS is to have plans and initiative deployed where cost savings could be applied through synergy and via this goal, the LBS Lodgehopping tour was developed. In the near future, the LBS will be developing the same synergy for the larger markets. The foundation is operated by volunteers only and has limited resources. The proceeds from Lodgehopping tour contributes to the further development of the foundation.
