Like the previous year, activities in the year under report focused on establishing the SCDH firmly in the national market. In collaboration with partner organisations, we were able to take on a number of significant development projects, allowing us to test and validate our service portfolio and business model.
The year was also marked by key milestones, such as the launch of the test OR, our operating theatre testing space, the go-live of the materials collection, and the introduction of new simulation and measurement technologies.
The main focus, however, was on securing and successfully delivering contracts, which enabled SCDH to position its service and research offerings profitably in a competitive environment. This transformation was not limited to optimising the strategic orientation, but also required substantial changes at key organisational levels, as well as an entrepreneurial mindset among all staff.
Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) were introduced to embed this focus within the organisation. This tool enables senior management to link financial targets precisely to individual business units, to monitor their progress systematically and to take corrective action at short notice where necessary. Furthermore, the Transfer Board has been established as a body that specifically supports the SCDH’s core mission – the transfer of knowledge and technology – through the involvement of stakeholders from the worlds of science, business and society.
Overall, the SCDH managed to overcome the challenges by demonstrating an exceptionally high level of commitment and placing the projects at the heart of its work. The customer base was expanded and turnover increased fivefold compared with the previous year. Numerous projects have been secured, implemented and reviewed using a quality management system based on market feedback. First-time customers became repeat clients. This trust is the result of providing bespoke services that are tailored to our clients’ needs and create added value.
In addition, new national and international partnerships were established, which, together with the project activities, led to increased media coverage. This was evidenced, for example, by the feature in Monocle magazine, the special issue of the trade journal Hochparterre entitled “Im Superlabor”, and exhibition accompanying the presentation of the Bern Design Award to Minou Afzali. Showcase projects with the Stadtspital Zürich, the Spitalzentrum Biel, the Patient Safety Switzerland Foundation, Roche, and many other key stakeholders have laid a solid foundation for future economic growth.
USPs
The SCDH is Switzerland’s only center of technological excellence for design research in the health sector. The SCDH researches and develops design solutions and standards that promote good health in three areas of activity: “Visual Communication”, “Objects and Environment” and “Systems and Processes”. The SCDH provides services, enters into research collaborations and offers professional development workshops and seminars. For clients from industry, the science and research community and the public sector, it provides analyses, consultancy, testing, as well as access to a unique infrastructure and an international network of experts.
Established in 2019 as a public-private partnership, the SCDH is funded by the federal government, the Canton of Bern and private partners. It has 26 employees (23 full time equivalents) and is based in Nidau near Biel/Bienne.

We analyse, test, and communicate the ways in which design can improve health.
Our health is greatly influenced by the environment we live in: spaces, buildings, products, services, processes and digital solutions shape the way we live, work, learn and recover. Decisions made during the design phase have a direct impact on safety, well-being and costs.
The SCDH supports health organisations, planners and designers, building owners and property developers, the public sector, industrial and commercial enterprises, as well as universities and research institutions, helping them to design and develop their projects in a way that promotes health. We do so over three areas of activity “Visual Communication” , “Objects and Environment” and “Systems and Processes.”

WHERE WE WORK
We operate a facility in Nidau, near Biel/Bienne, that is unique in Europe and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. This enables realistic testing under authentic conditions – on a 1:1 scale.
OUR INFRASTRUCTURE
• Simulation area: projection of floor plans onto 560 m², room layout using corrugated cardboard walls, and furnishing with mock-ups and furniture.
• Testing spaces: faithful reproduction of patients’ rooms, treatment rooms, common areas, classrooms, living spaces and workplaces, including furnishings.
• Test OR: a fully equipped operating theatre that meets current hospital standards.
• Workshops: manufacturing technologies in the fields of metal, wood, textiles, digital, printing, surfaces and plastics.
• Materials Collection: digital and physical collection of materials for healthcare and public buildings.

The 2025 financial year marks the start of the second funding period for the SCDH. There has been a significant increase in the procurement of services, research collaborations and partnerships with industry partners.
The 2025 financial year marks the start of the second funding period for the SCDH, which runs until 2028 (Federal Government) and until 2029 (Canton of Bern). Unlike in the first funding period, the Federal Government now covers 70% of the public funding, whilst the Canton of Bern contributes 30%.
Throughout the current funding period, the operationalisation of the business model will remain a key focus of SCDH activitiy. The sustainable transformation towards a market- and project-oriented organisation is intended to ensure financial self-sufficiency – independent of public funding – by the 2030 financial year at the latest. Activities aimed at the acquisition of new contracts, research collaborations and partnerships have been significantly stepped up. These form the core revenue streams of the future and saw an increase of over 500% in the 2025 financial year compared with the previous year. Despite this strong growth, public funding remains the most important source of income. The funding reserved in 2024 was used in 2025 to finance the depreciation of the underlying capital assets from the first funding period.
Staffing levels remained stable compared with the previous year. Personnel costs thus also remained stable during the year under report.
Furthermore, SCDH’s consistent market focus led to a significant reduction in investment activity and internal organisational projects in the 2025 financial year compared with
the previous year. Operating expenses are therefore largely limited to fixed costs, with building costs at the Nidau site accounting for the largest share.
The major investment project in 2025 was the completion of the test OR in the Living Lab. A valuable addition to the existing infrastructure, this facility will in future form an integral part of service projects carried out with SCDH’s partners. What’s more, sponsors were found to help set up the test OR; they contributed in the form of in-kind donations.
The SCDH’s expenditure was fully covered by public funding, as well as by income from service projects, competitive research grants and collaborations with industry partners. Thus, the 2025 year-end results are accordingly balanced.
The annual accounts were prepared in accordance with the Swiss GAAP FER accounting standards (core FER).
