Moon to Put Your Paddles Away pedIexic (pud-kwuh-HWEETS) Late November/Late December, is the "moon to put your paddles away." This moons signals a time to move indoors for the coming winter season. During the winter moons, tools, baskets, and other items are constructed. Sea-run cutthroat trout, blackmouth salmon, and steelhead are fished and hunting waterfowl and game continues. Shellfish are collected during the nighttime low tides. Excerpt from ‘13 Moons: The 13 Lunar Phases, and How They Guide the Swinomish People’ By swelitub (Todd A. Mitchell) and Jamie L. Donatuto 2

forward; we might as well do it with a smile behind our masks. With the holidays coming up, we must not ignore COVID-19 safety practices when we choose to have a family gathering or go on a public outing. I must emphasize the coronavirus is still here! The CDC announced that the omicron variant is here in Washington. It spreads even quicker than the other variants. My anxieties for the safety of our people is growing. While I am terrified at times, I always return to thoughts of my community and our resiliency. We are strong together and we’ll come out on the other side of this even stronger! As of December 6, the number of cases has amounted to 368 positive coronavirus cases here at Swinomish alone. The numbers continue to rise elsewhere too!
