Junior gymnasts show off their talent

A team of rhythmic gymnasts from Swindon’s Esprit Club had an amazing day on 9 August when they were invited to try out the facilities at Wembley Arena before the medal competitions got underway the following day.

Ashleigh West, Lauren Hoard, Ellie Morse, Gabriela Caruso, Maya Lucas, Hannah Curtis and Stephani Sherlock who won the British Junior Rhythmic Gymnastic Competition in November were able to watch the world’s top gymnasts warming up and rehearsing their moves in the hall before showing off a routine. Mum Julie Morse said her daughter Ellie and other friends returned exhausted. “It was a fantastic experience for the girls to be right there in the same performance area with the world’s best gymnasts doing their final practice. Then the team put on their own little show and sat in the kiss and cry area whilst a

score was put up on the big screen. It was lovely that the organisers arranged a mock ceremony with cardboard medals and a sprig of broccoli instead of flowers. The day was made a very special experience for them.” During the competition club coach Deb Hows worked in the athletes area behind the scenes supervising and organising the gymnasts to ensure the event ran smoothly. Councillors respond to criticism about Tadpole Farm

Paul Exell, chair of Oakhurst Residents’ Association, criticised Swindon Council’s planning committee decision to permit Crest Homes to build 1,700 houses at Tadpole Farm in the August Link, naming councillors Mark Edwards, Toby Elliott and Emma Faramazi who represent Oakhurst ward. Here they react. As ward councillors in the Northern Sector, we were disappointed but not surprised by last month’s article from the chair of Oakhurst Residents’ Association. Regrettably ORA sought to be vindictive and score political points, rather than contribute anything to benefit the local residents they purport to represent. It’s all too easy to criticise elected representatives faced with tough decisions. We have to take into ac-

count the entire weight of evidence rather than be selective with the facts to suit our pre-determined opinions. Planning is a quasi-legal process and all decisions have to stand up to potential challenge in a court of law. The unequivocal advice from legal counsel was that there were no grounds to refuse the Tadpole Farm application that would have survived an appeal. We could have deferred or rejected the plans outright. That would have been politically popular, but it would have been a short-lived victory. Crest would have almost certainly won on appeal costing council tax-payers hundreds of

thousands of pounds. Worse still, Crest could have built more or less whatever they wanted, and our right to the ‘Section 106’ monies (developer contributions) for things such as schools and roads would have been lost. In short, we would have completely lost control of the development. This was our biggest fear, since it’s exactly what’s caused all the problems with the existing northern sector development. We therefore proposed a ‘third way’: that permission be granted, but withheld for up to three months while Crest and the council negotiate the final shape of the agreement. Vitally, nothing can be

rubber-stamped without the approval of ward councillors, so we retain control. We are already seeing the fruits of this outcome. Ward councillors have insisted that Crest must provide money for extra school places specifically in the northern sector, rather than the cash leaking across the whole borough. That’s just one example - there is much more hard work still going on. Before the planning committee meeting, the Labour Party - apparently assisted by ORA committee members - delivered leaflets calling for the application to be deferred. On the night, Labour councillors didn’t even propose this option, and voted to grant permission. Plans for 91 dwellings proposed by Persimmon Homes on a field off Hook Street between Grange Park houses and Lydiard Park were displayed to the public in late July. This is the second time developers have tried to secure the site. In May 2011 a scheme for 175 houses covering the whole area was rejected at a planning inspection because of the visual intrusion upon Lydiard Park. The revised plan places houses adjacent to existing houses, on the eastern slope of the site so that they won’t be seen from the park. Glenn Godwin, director of Pegasus Planning Group, said: “The proposal responds to the planning inspector’s indication that an application could be acceptable if it was below the crest of the hill and does not impact on Lydiard Park.” The proposal shows the site entrance off Hook Street, just below the brow of the hill and permeable paving to allow gradual flow of

rainwater from the hard landscaped areas. Barry Brock, whose house overlooks the field in question said his objection to any further development remains. “We’re very disappointed that Persimmon Homes have returned so soon after development was blocked at the planning appeal last year. “This is another case of greedy builders exploiting planning rules to get an unnecessary development which will make them lots of money to the detriment of the people of Swindon and Lydiard Park. “Once again residents have to put pen to paper and attend planning committee meetings to make their voices heard.” Mr Godwin said he hoped that a planning application could be presented to the planning committee in late September. Millbrook Primary welcomes new South African friends

Staff and pupils at Millbrook Primary School in Freshbrook welcomed two teachers from Thabang School in Bethlehem, South Africa, who came to visit in June to kick-off a brand new Global School Partnership programme funded by the Department for International Development through UKAid. Graham Swatton, the group’s fundraiser said: “It’s fantastic to receive funding raised by Health Total through the Health Lottery to cover our considerable transport costs for our activities. It means we can develop and promote our services to our existing and future members. “Research has shown that the risk of chronic stress, memory loss, and risk of another stroke is reduced if it’s possible to access social and peer support. Our project will target those restricted in what they can do due to mobility difficulties and economic hardship. “It means we can boost mood and confidence, and prevent further ill

New blog helps young people with mental health issues

Twenty-five year old Justine Aplin from West Swindon was diagnosed two years ago with bipolar disorder, after a ten year struggle with GPs to refer her to the mental health team. Two years on she has turned her life around, and is now keen to help other young people who may be feeling as helpless as she once did. Explaining her ultimate ambition to inspire others to take control of their lives, Justine said: “There isn’t enough mental health advice for young people. It’s alright reading leaflets but there’s nobody sharing their personal experience about the issues. So I decided to start writing a blog and using Twitter to reach out to other young people. Enterprise project boosts epilepsy support Year 6 pupils Lacy McKee and Remi Wrona from Greenmeadow Primary School have presented £153 to Swindon Epilepsy Support Group which is run by the new Phoenix Rotary Club, after an Economic Awareness Week which raised money from a range of practical activities. Children had to research and make presentations about worthy causes. Lacy had particular knowledge of epilepsy as her sister Leona has a severe form of the condition which is now under control. Children and staff who have attended or worked at Koalas dropped in to meet manager Stephanie Hathaway and her staff. For some it was the first time they had visited since the group moved from a hut in the grounds of Victoria Hospital in Old Town to Salt Way in 2009. Andrea Baker who, with husband Keith, have attended Salt Way for eight years with their son Alex who has delayed development and Holly who has a severe form of cerebral palsy. Andrea said: “Koalas have given us so much help and support over the years. Alex and Holly’s needs are very demanding, we would have struggled without Koalas. Stephanie has known the children from an early age; she’s wonderful.” Although largely funded by Swindon Council, the group is managed by a parents’ committee. Member Jo Gwinnett said: “It’s amazing that the group has survived as a charity for 25 years. The involvement of parents in decision making is so important.”

Challenge to PDC to sing a panto aria, but Aladdin may need the lamp genieâ€™s help

Rehearsals for this yearâ€™s Wyvern panto get underway in late November, but a star of Aladdin has already called on Swindon Town manager Paolo di Canio to join him on stage and render a tune in Italian. At the launch of Aladdin at Peatmoorâ€™s Hongxin Chinese buffet on 4 July actor Nick Barclay, right, who plays the authoritarian Emperor in the show said: â€œIâ€™ve never been to Swindon; the only thing I know about the town is that it has Paulo Di Canio. It would be great to get him up on stage to do a bit of Italian opera with us.â€? Could it come about? Richard Loftus, marketing manager at the Wyvern said: â€œPaolo Di Canio was very supportive of last yearâ€™s pantomime Cinderella and we Wyvern during this yearâ€™s hope that he will continue to support the panto season. â€œAladdin is granted three wishes by the genie, in this magical pantomime adventure, but I fear wishing for a stage appearance by the Townâ€™s manager may be a little out of reach.â€? Local artisans and food producers’ market coming to Swindon Swindon town centre is about to benefit from an injection of top quality, unique local produce with the addition of a new artisan and food producers’ market in Havelock Square. Due for launch on 6th September, ‘Your Swindon Market’ will boast around 25 stalls offering everything from speciality cheeses to exquisite glassware, and organically grown fruit and vegetables to authentic wines and ciders. The market will run from 9am until 2pm every Thursday, and will also feature a no-purchase-necessary lunchtime raffle, giving away a hamper full of goods from the producers worth approximately £60 every market day. Market Manager Jack McLeod, who has successfully managed several similar projects across the Thames Valley said: “I’m delighted to be launching Your Swindon Market in Swindon, and I’m confident it will be a hugely popular addition to the town centre. We are here to serve the local community with the very best in local produce. “There is sometimes a stigma about overpricing in farmers’ markets, but we are very sensibly priced for the quality of our produce. Last night of the proms The wait is nearly over – the Royal Opera House’s biggest show of the year is coming to Swindon this month! For the fifth year in a row, the Last Night of the Proms will be shown on the Big Screen in Wharf Green, and you can enjoy what is always a wonderfully British atmosphere for free. Hundreds of revellers are set to fill the town centre arena as the show is beamed back from South Kensington on 8th September. And the entertainment won’t just come from the Big Screen, as we will have a number of performances from some of Wiltshire’s finest musical talent both before the live link-up and during the show’s interval.

The evening kicks off at 6.30pm with pre-show entertainment, before the action from the Royal Opera House gets underway at 7.30pm. There will be a wide range of food and other refreshments on offer from around Wharf Green, but picnics are also allowed! RAF psychiatry veterans reunite

Lydiard Park Conference Centre will be the venue for a reunion of former members of the Royal Air Force Psychiatry Service on Saturday 29 September, 6pm to midnight. The service in the mid-1960s had units all over the UK and at bases around the world. As British Forces pulled back from colonial outposts, followed by defence and health service reorganisations, units and

psychiatric hospitals were closed down, with RAF Wroughton being the last to shut in 1995. Swindon player needs sponsorship to attend chess championship in Kazakhstan

Lewis Martin, a deaf chess player who first started playing aged eight at Westlea Primary School, has been selected to play in the 15th ICSC World Deaf Men Individual Championship from 27 September to 7 October. However, he needs financial assistance to bring back gold for Britain. Lewis, now 20, from Grange Park, who is studying �� Engineering Mathematics at Bristol University, has been the English Deaf Chess Champion for the last three years and has attained the highest grade in the history of deaf chess in England. His talent at Westlea was spotted and as a keen member of Thamesdown Chess Club he won several Wiltshire and West of England junior titles, progressing to international events held in Poland and Holland. Lewis attended Mary Hare School for the Deaf where he played for Newbury Chess Club Lewis with one of the many trophies competing in the Berkshire he has won since starting his chess League for six years. As an under playing career at Westlea Primary 14 player Lewis won the national junior squad under 16s in 2006 and Jack pub in Wroughton. Any sponsorship that will help in 2008 came third in the World Deaf Junior Chess Championships in him represent the UK in the Kazakh capital Almaty at the end of Switzerland. This enables parents to meet with their child’s tutor, our Peer Mentors (pictured left) and our dedicated Pastoral Team ahead of the students ‘in-school’ experience. Our annual evaluation indicates that parents find this evening is very helpful in empowering them to be part of their child’s transition to Bradon Forest School. The induction was thoroughly enjoyed by our new ‘Year 7s’. They had a great range of experiences including meeting their tutors and a number of teachers who will be teaching them next year. In the assembly at the end of day three, the Year 6 pupils already felt part of the Bradon Forest family and, judging by feedback, are certainly ‘raring to go’ in September. The Year 9 Peer Mentors did a terrific job in supporting the Year 6 pupils over the three days and they are really looking forward to their role in September. CONTINUING EXAM SUCCESS High achievers are encouraged at Bradon Forest. We welcomed the English Baccalaureate as it gave an extra perspective for parents looking at school data. In the last two years we were top of the table for schools in a 12 mile radius. Over the last 10 years we have maintained a broad and balanced Key Stage 4 curriculum that closed as ‘few doors’ as possible whilst challenging all of our students, irrespective of ability. We have resisted the temptation to inflate our ‘performance’ for the national League tables by

Following the success of the Bradon Forest World Challenge expedition to Romania in 2010, a new team of young people from KS4 will visit the Atlas Mountains of Morocco in July 2012. As part of the expedition the students will take part in a project to help the local Moroccan community. The World Challenge expedition aims to promote resilience, self-reliance and leadership skills in young people. We are proud to be involved with the World Challenge programme which is usually only taken up by 6th formers! Our next new World Challenge Group will be off on their travels in Summer 2013.

Second Student Trip to India in 2012 Over the 2012 Easter break, our India link students with Miss Shelley and Miss Beet travelled to India to visit our link schools as part of the British Council ‘Connecting Classrooms’ project. The project, which has been ongoing for three years, involves the sharing of work between Bradon Forest and Jawahar Navodaya Vidylaya (known as JNV) schools. The trip was more of a journey, than a holiday. The students had been working together for 18 months to build relationships with the schools and share work ahead of the trip. We are already planning a future trip for April 2014 to continue our excellent relationship with JNV schools in India. Experiencing other cultures with the India Link trip in March 2012.

Congratulations to Mr Hutchings (Progression Manager), Mr Winward (Deputy Headteacher), the Progression, PSHE, Pastoral and Learning Support teams, and the students involved - they did a sterling job. 3rd Millennium Learning Award We have just been informed that we have been successful in gaining the 3rd Millennium Learning Award, a new ICT award. Bradon Forest has been invited to pilot this prestigious award for schools which hold the ICT Mark. As a holder of the ICT Mark since 2006, we were keen to showcase the excellent use of ICT by students, teachers, governors and partner primaries. This new award is assessed on two videos produced by the staff and students which are submitted to the national judging panel. Mr Wright worked with members of the e-team, both students and staff, to identify outstanding practice across the school and the team then contributed to our video submission which you can now view on http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Mu3jmhbLJJg&feature=email Mr Wright has worked with Mrs Purcell to make the video which hopefully encapsulates Bradon Forest’s vision of a 3rd Millennium school as a learning community with ICT embedded everywhere. ICT is fully integrated into every aspect of school life at Bradon. Students take the lead to shape and form ICT use across the school and are excited by their use of ICT in all aspects of their learning. Parents are regularly engaged with their children’s progress and education with comprehensive data reports five times a year via our SIMS Parents Learning Gateway. Teachers are confident to incorporate new software and devices into their lessons because they are supported with on-going training and advice. The school supports the local community through inspiring younger pupils and their teachers at our partner primary schools and sharing our experience across a wide educational network. We hope we have captured this vision in our videos. In making them it has given us another opportunity to reflect on where we are and where we are going so we have found it a really useful review exercise.

BFS INTERNET RADIO We have recently launched our own internet radio! Russell Prue came in to train a group of KS3 students on how to use the brand new studio, including microphone, mixing desk and touch screen software. The group split into teams to cover the news, sports and school events. They learnt how to fade in and out, use music for effect and apply appropriate jingles. The first live show was then broadcast over the school intranet later that day, including a live music performance by one of our resident bands! The e-team are now working towards regular broadcasting slots to keep their fellow students informed of school activities and events. Due to the wide range of sports and teams with ongoing success in local, county, regional and national competitions, the radio team has plenty of material for regular programmes… our very own 5Live! BRADON BUSES September 2012 marks the fourth year of our own paid bus service since the withdrawal by Swindon Borough Council of the free service for new entrants in 2009. The service has grown and the Bradon Forest service now has over 300 passengers. We are currently running five routes serving North and West Swindon using Ellison’s coaches. the bigger picture The owners of the Swindon Designer Outlet have announced a £35 million refurbishment and expansion into another part of the Great Western Railway works. Built in 1874 the Grade II listed K shop which became 9 Shop in the diesel era, and now referred to as the Long Shop, will provide another 50,000 square feet of retail space, creating 350 jobs. In its heyday, the Long Shop was used as an iron foundry for forging brass and metals used in the assembly of locomotives in adjacent buildings on the site. The pictures here are by Roy Nash, the unofficial railway works photographer in the years before it shut in 1986. Right, the building being used to repair and refurbish diesel engines shortly before closure. Below right, after the works shut, the Long Shop was rented by GWR Heritage Trust for some years to refurbish rolling stock. Bollywood dance has a lot going for it

Netball club recruits juniors and adults

It might not be an Olympic sport, but netball is highly competitive in the Commonwealth Games and in the Swindon League. Abbey Meads Netball Club has places for new players in their under 11, under 16 and adult teams. The club began in 2004 when a group of women decided they wanted to get fit and have fun while exercising. Having grown steadily, the club currently has six teams in the Swindon League. Their increasing numbers means they have moved venue from Isambard School to Next Generation, with juniors’ practice taking place on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm and older teams from 7pm to 9.30pm. Club secretary Clare Slinn said committee members Rachel Hanrahan, Nicola Dolman and Becky Ball coordinated the project. “Les Slinn Fitness Studios has worked with the MS Centre for several years and the runners wanted to continue this.” Therapy centre physiotherapist Jan Howard said: “We’re so pleased that the Allstars have been able to buy the vibrogym which is an expensive piece of kit found in commercial gyms. The vibrations

have a soothing effect which can relieve pain and boost circulation. It’s particularly good for relaxing muscles before a massage. “The fully adjustable chair enables sufferers to sit properly whilst using the static exercise bike to improve mobility and strengthen muscles. It means people can independently use it without having to call on assistance. “Both pieces of equipment are really helping our work.” • The MS Centre will be presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2012 by the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Troughton on Friday 21 September.

The Haydon Wick Health Walk, which started in January this year as part of the Swindon Health Walk programme now regularly attracts over 40 walkers to its Thursday sessions. The one hour walks around the area, whatever the weather, are different each week and end at the Haydon Centre for coffee and a chat. The group now also goes further afield to discover the town’s beauty spots such as Coate Water, Stanton Park, Lawns and Lydiard Park. Dover to Calais swim achieved at last

After being disappointed not to complete their cross Channel swim for charity last year, Swindon swimmers Bethan Sowden from Freshbrook and Sarah Baker from Oakhurst, are delighted to have finally made the crossing to raise money for spinal cord injury charity Aspire during the fine weather at the end of July. Explaining the delay Bethan said: “We were due to swim in early September, but it had to be abandoned due to poor weather conditions. Then this year our crossing scheduled between 10 and 18 July was threatened once again because of the weather, but we eventually got the call to get down to Dover.” Beth and Sarah formed part of a six-strong relay team, departing at 2.43am on Tuesday 24 July. Bethan was the first to swim and completed three one hour sessions, while her

team mates each did two one hour swims. “Conditions were perfect all day without a cloud in the sky,” said Beth. “Lots of cargo ships, ferries, sailing and pleasure craft went past, but we overtook three other channel swimming boats which we were pleased about.” The relay team reached land just south of Cap Griz Nez in just 13 hours and 5 minutes, at 3.58pm. Beth is now considering a solo crossing. “The boat leader and pilots told me I had the potential; it’s just a question of training and deciding if it’s what I want to do.” Between them the team raised over £10,000 for Aspire and donations can still be made at: www. justgiving.com/Bethan-Sowden

The pool has been closed and retiled during August and will reopen on 9 September. Last year £90,000 was spent on refurbishing changing rooms and repairing the glass and steel external walls. Over the summer the building’s steel framework has been cleaned and painted, and work has started on a £1 million project to replace the roof and skylights for the first time since it was built in 1985. Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Council’s cabinet member for Leisure and Strategic Transport, above, said: “The work demonstrates the council’s commitment to enhancing one of the best sports and leisure facilities in the South West. “With Bristol ice rink closing Link Centre is a major attraction. We’re

still awaiting news on whether our bid for one of the temporary 50 metre Olympic training pools will be successful. If we are, it will go next to the ice rink - subject to planning permission and raising around £2 million. We will take the opportunity to renew the plant to cool the ice and heat the water in the pool. “With the Oasis now being redeveloped by a private company, Swindon will be even more of a regional attraction.”

Reinstating a waterway into Swindon town centre is the dream of the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust and a number of politicians on Swindon Council. The garden was created to commemorate the lives of pupils Grant Younger, Connor Hewitt, Perry Harris and Celina Martin who died in early 2010, and Jessica Michaels who passed away in January 2011. The £10,000 project was built with a lot of volunteer help from companies like Zurich and parent working parties. Link advertiser Jill Blackwood contributed her time to design the site which contains a sculpture by Gordon Dickinson representing two friends supporting each other. Headteacher Jackie Smith said: “The garden has been an area for contemplation, for both pupils,

and staff. This year about ten staff have experienced bereavement; it has been a place of solace for them.” Ms Smith said the garden will now become an outdoor classroom for older children attending Uplands. She explained: “Our numbers are increasing to 110 with a new building opening in September. It’s a product of Swindon’s growing population and the fact that children with disabilities are enjoying a longer quality of life. “We are developing curriculum and work pathways for 16 to 19 year olds and learning horticultural skills will be part of the programme.”

Vet promotes transparent view of pet care

TV vet Joe Inglis has opened a revolutionary new practice in West Swindon offering a different approach to pet care.

Our vets and nurses will work with iPads to post regular pet updates for their owners to view online.” The practice will also have an online TV channel to broadcast live video of treatments, case studies and vets answering questions about pet care.

She said: “The site will look like a subway station with videos playing on the platform billboard. “The recording can be of you performing in any environment – at a gig, a rehearsal, a soundcheck, or just at home on the sofa. If you would like to record it in the street or even better, busking in an underground station. “We’re aiming for the site to become a really cool library of great acts from around the world

Swindon Travel Choices Swindon Travel Choices aims to make it easier for those living or working in Swindon to get around without clogging up the road network. We believe that by giving people proper travel choices, many everyday journeys can be made by bus, bike and foot rather than by car.

Key Swindon destinations get new travel guides

Take a break from work by walking with a group

Swindon Travel Choices has published a series of travel guides that advise on the different ways of getting to key Swindon places. The guides show local maps of walking and cycling routes, along with bus stops and details of where to get up to date information.

Staff in Swindon workplaces are striding out for fitness in lunchtime walking groups and discovering new routes, like the Western Flyer, with a Travel Choices leader to start them off. The aim is to show how easy it is to cover a couple of miles on foot and encourage people to walk or cycle to work.

The guides published so far are for Lydiard Park, Oasis Leisure Centre, Swindon College and the Civic Offices for visiting Swindon Borough Council. There are also guides to employment sites, such as Zurich’s TriCentres and Life Centre, North Star House (BT) and Polaris House (Research Council).

Alison Smith, from the BT walking group, said: “Since joining this group, I’ve been inspired to change my usual travel arrangements and now walk home from work two days a week.”

The safety of using subways on the footpath and cycletrack network in West Swindon has been raised as a concern at community consultations and we have responded with a project to repaint the walls and ceilings, and improve lighting with vandal resistant fittings. So far the subways upgraded are those under Whitehill Way and Tewkesbury Way at West Swindon Centre. Further upgrades are planned for later this year.

New bus link from West Swindon Enjoy a scenic bus ride and a day out in Cricklade or Cirencester – without the need to change buses in the town centre. Olympic inspiration Swindon Travel Choices teamed up with British Cycling, the CTC (Cyclists Touring Club), Swindon Borough Leisure Services, MB Swindon (Mountain Bike Club) and many other cycling enthusiasts to enjoy an Olympic cycling celebration at Wharf Green on 11 August. The day coincided with the Women’s Mountain Bike Olympic competition shown on the big screen, attracting hordes of people to sit in the sun and be inspired by the riders. Various teams competed in Wharf Green in a ‘Watt Bike challenge.’ which involved teams of 4 cycling on static bikes to try and record the fastest times. Swindon Travel Choices didn’t win a podium spot, but gave it their best! Both children and adults took part in the MB Swindon mountain bike course and Rough Riderz showed off their range of trike style disabled and able-bodied off-road mountain bikes. High flying air cadets close to the top

West Swindon’s 633 Squadron Air Training Corps are jubilant after winning the Morris Cup, the runner up prize in the Lees Trophy, the annual competition to find the best squadron in the country. The judging by head of the ATC Commodore Barbara Cooper was based on the squadron’s activities including flying, gliding, shooting, scholarship, expeditions, craft work, sports participation, as well as community and charity work. Unit commander Flt Lt Helene Woodham said she was ecstatic. “When you consider that the squadron started with 12 cadets after a Link story in 2005, it is amazing to be judged second best out of 1,000 ATC squadrons. “It’s the product of so much hard work by staff and the cadets.” Air Commodore Cooper said: “I’m glad that both the Lees and the Morris trophies have been won by smaller squadrons. Do religion and science work together?

A talk by the Bishop of Swindon Rev Lee Rayfield on the compatibility of science and religion takes place at St Francis Church of England Primary School, Taw Hill on 25 September, 7.30pm. This is the talk that Bishop Lee was due to give in the Spring but was postponed after he broke his collar bone in a cycling accident. Now fit and well the former lecturer in immunology and member of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority will argue his view that science and religion are mutually compatible. All are invited to attend.

Girls gain top awards in guiding

Four guides from 1st Peatmoor Guides have received their Baden Powell Challenge badges - the highest award a Girl Guide can achieve. Charlotte Butler, Jasmine Stilwell, Charlotte Markham and Gemma Perry had to successfully complete ten challenges and finish with an independent adventure. Three went to Bristol with other guides from the county and one went to the London Guiding Centre meeting guides from all over the country. The District Commissioner presented the awards in front of members of 1st Peatmoor, parents and representatives from Swindon West Division.
