Thoughtful poem appreciated by repatriation officer
The poem written by Jodie Henderson from Haydon Wick and published in the August Link, describing her experience of attending the repatriation of Highlander Scott McLaren, has been applauded by Anne Bevis, repatriation liaison officer for Wootton Bassett Royal British Legion. Jodie, 15, who attends Nova Hreod School, spent a week with The Link on work placement and working with freelance photographer Richard Wintle of Calyx Multimedia, covered the repatriation on 12 July, her second day with us. Miss Wiltshire gets the charity bug Jo jumps for Prospect on 11 September
Jo Logan, this year’s Miss Wiltshire, has set herself the task of raising as much money for charity as possible and she’s keen to hear from event organisers who would like her to make an appearance. On 11 September she’ll be leaping from an aircraft at 10,000 feet to raise money for Prospect Hospice and would like to hear from sponsors who can boost her resolve, although when she’s up there Jo won’t have much choice as she’ll be strapped to an expert parachutist. On 18 and 19 July Jo represented Wiltshire in the Miss England Finals 2011. Through publicity by the charity and The Link, children in Swindon were asked to draw a picture of an angel, imagined as a good helper. The orphanage for abandoned children was set up by a sherpa guide called Angel and his wife whom Highworth couple Rosa and Ian Matheson befriended on a trip to Nepal in 2009. Since then they have been building support for the charity set up to help the orphanage and assist Angel provide better accommodation and an education for the children. “It has been a crazily busy time both with fundraising and at the orphanage,” said Rosa. “In April the children moved to a school much closer to their home, where they
feel welcome and loved. “We’re delighted with the response to the competition; there will be a splendid array of pictures, all done with such enthusiasm and love,” added Rosa. “We are asking the public to vote for their top five, from which we can create cards for sale. Cycling from the West into town to become a lot easier 12 September forum presentation will explain how A £6 million grant from the government for SWIFT (Swindon Workplace Initiative for Transport) is going to boost cycle use in the town, and cyclists in West Swindon are going to benefit. How the improvements will be implemented will be outlined at the West Swindon Forum on Monday 12 September, from 7pm. According to Swindon Council transport studies some 20 per cent of town centre workers live in West Swindon. Some 2,500 people make the average 3.5 kilometre daily journey, half of them in cars. The project aims to entice a significant proportion onto bikes. Building on the recently completed West Swindon Local Accessibility Action Plan to improve signage on walking and cycling

Jungle Parc UK has applied to add another attraction at Lydiard Park: 100 tree platforms connected by walkways and zip slides on two courses, in the trees opposite the existing large play area, close to the park’s playing fields and visitor centre with its cafe. A children’s course would be built at low level and an adult adventure route through the canopy. The planning application says the development will not in any way impact on the surrounding environmental area and all trees will be protected. However the application has been held up by objections to a zip slide across the avenue, spoiling the view of Lydiard House. Swindon Council planning officer Helen Cooper said further discussions would take place with Jungle Parc and no date for consideration by the committee had been set. Money will also be spent upgrading the Western Flyer cycling route into town with better signs and road crossing points. The grant will also see improvements in the cycle and pedestrian routes from the south and east of Swindon, including the removal of barriers which make cycling across the town difficult. Transportation engineer and cycling enthusiast Phil Martlew will talk about how the cycling project will be developed. Members of the West Swindon Neighbourhood Police Team will also provide an update on their work over the summer holiday period and review their target priorities. The West Swindon Forum is a meeting point between residents from across the three wards and the eight councillors representing the area. Traffic light experiment starts in September
The approach roads to Mannington Roundabout on Great Western Way have been resurfaced and new road markings, signs and lighting have been installed. Although one of Swindon’s busiest roundabouts, the traffic lights will only be on at peak times. Drivers will need to give way to traffic from the right when the lights are turned off. Traffic engineers will spend some weeks adjusting when the lights operate. The experiment is programmed to last 12 months.
Bike path ride to mark 50th year since closure of Marlborough railway line A group of volunteers have started the Friends of the Railway Path to look after the Swindon to Marlborough railway path, the route developed by Sustrans as part of the National Cycle Network. The path goes through Chiseldon and down the Og Valley to Marlborough, taking in a variety of historic landscapes on its way. It also gives access to The Ridgeway and other paths to make enjoyable circular routes. The group formally launches with a number of events on Saturday 10 September to mark 50 years since the last passenger train
travelled between Swindon and Marlborough. Cyclists should meet at 10am by the Coate Water refreshment kiosk in the car park for a ride to Marlborough, returning by about 3.30pm. Chair of the Friends of the Railway Path, Dick Millard, said “the railway path is such a great way to get out of town and onto the Downs. He denied that there was rudeness towards Mrs Howard, but in the light of the opposition to the project, Mr Boyd said obtaining planning permission for the BMX track was now unlikely. “Whilst acknowledging that the communication of our objective could have been better, I am disappointed that an opportunity to provide a facility for the youth of the area has been lost.” The parish council has had the rubble removed and the green space is to be reinstated.

The B4553 (at The Pry) meets Cross Lanes on a sharp bend as it joins Packhorse Lane. Cross Lanes, which is a weight restricted road over the railway bridge at Swindon and Cricklade Railway Society’s Blunsdon Station, and the River Ray bridge, feeds traffic into Swindon as it joins Tadpole Lane. To the north an unclassified back road takes traffic to Hayes Knoll and Cricklade, shaving a few seconds off the trip if drivers deviate off the B road. In the short term the Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board has allocated money to improve the Cross Lane junction so that drivers know who has the right of way. “It used to be an actual cross roads but the arrangement was altered many years ago because of the number of accidents,” said Jacqui. “The volume of traffic has grown tremendously as the number of houses to the west and north of Swindon has increased. Many of the drivers are using the back roads to avoid Thamesdown Drive and Meads Way. There can be long queues of cars trying to get onto the unclassified road because of its single lane entry/exit which creates a bottleneck.
“It’s not clear who has right of way and this increases the dangers if drivers don’t know what others are doing. I think it needs a yellow line box in the junction so that people know not to enter it unless the exit is clear.” Jacqui is also calling on Wiltshire and Swindon Councils to sort out the weight limit signs on Cross Lanes. At present there is a 17 tonne limit sign, but this is no longer enforceable because weight categories have changed. “Swindon Borough have agreed to upgrade the signs on their side but I’d like them to put a weight limit sign up by Abbey Stadium so we don’t have large lorries coming all the way down to Blunsdon Station. The railway bridge is under severe pressure and is being damaged by heavy traffic.” Cross Lanes is due to be closed in late 2012 when Tadpole Railway Bridge has work carried out on it and the embankments, and Tadpole River Bridge (over the River Ray), close to the railway station, will be rebuilt. The whole area is likely to be affected should the 1,700 home Tadpole Farm development go ahead.

Streamlining the national planning policies of over 1,000 pages to around 65 is welcome, but it is inevitable that there will be either insufficient detail, lack of clarity or sufficient fog to create opportunities to hijack the planning process for short-term commercial ends. There is a real danger that this hijacking will occur with the use of the term ‘sustainable development’ as it is defined in the framework. The presumption in favour of sustainable development is to be warmly welcomed, if only the concept of sustainable development were adequately defined, explained and unequivocal. Sadly it is not. What is clear, according to the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s statement in this year’s budget, is that the answer to development growth should wherever possible be ‘yes.’ There is a clear tension between economic growth and sustainable development and this new document provides inadequate guidance on both. There is a presumption that there will be more certainty to communities, developers and investors, and a reinforcement of the emphasis on a positive plan-led approach to sustainable growth. Yet there is no clarity on what constitutes sustainable growth; indeed it is quite clear that this presumption is merely a recipe for anarchic planning outcomes. The first sentence of the Ministerial Foreword says: ‘the purpose of planning is to help achieve sustainable development.’ The above statement is potentially the best part of this framework document because it is accurate and appropriate. Sadly, the definition of sustainable development in the document undermines that purpose. It says ‘sustainable means ensuring that better lives for ourselves [sic] don’t mean worse lives for future generations.’ Given that we have no idea what future generations will think is a better life, it is impossible to know how to run our lives in order to provide equivalent lives for the future. This is further compromised by the definition for development which says development means growth. There are several studies to show that development does not necessarily mean growth and, some countries recognise that there is more to development than simply growth.
The definition for development continues: ‘We must accommodate the new ways by which we will earn our living in a competitive world.’ This is surely self-evident and would apply equally to development without growth. It goes on: ‘We must house a rising population, which is living longer and wants to make new choices.’ This is quite unfathomable. The ‘rising population’ is a problem of our own making and simply accommodating it without further commentary seems quite irresponsible. The UK population is set to rise to 70 million by 2050. In the UK we have finite land resources and many authorities have calculated that the optimum population of Britain is 30 to 35 million. It is not enough to say simply that we must house a rising population. We need to do more , we need to reflect and recognise that our population growth is unsustainable. Merely responding by building more houses, is inappropriate and, of course, unsustainable. We pay our politicians to do better than that. The document continues: ‘our lives, and the places in which we live them, can be better, but they will certainly be worse if things stagnate.’ What a negative way of presenting a superb opportunity. Sustainable development has everything to offer the present generation and future generations, yet to say that if we do not do that, we will stagnate simply misunderstands the way that development occurs. It concludes, ‘sustainable development is about change for the better, and not only in our built environment.’ It really has become very muddled; sustainable development is not about change for the better, but it is about change. And it cannot possibly be only about our built environment. The concept of sustainable development is an equal priority, not only for natural resources but also economic development and social justice. The definition presented by this Ministerial Foreword, on which the new planning framework hangs is deeply unsatisfactory. It seems to be completely ignorant of what sustainable development means despite this government and previous governments being involved with sustainable development concepts for more than two decades. • Read Richard’s full analysis at www.swindonlink.com

When Kate Davis from The Prinnels decided to marry her long time partner Nigel , they booked the Nine Elms pub back in 2010. But when she turned up to confirm the details in February the look of surprise on landlord Errol Johnson‘s face told her she was on the brink of a bride’s biggest nightmare. The previous landlady had left the pub without telling Errol about the booking. However, unfazed, although never having catered for a wedding, he stepped up to the plate. Kate is the daughter of Terry and Theresa Davis from Toothill, the first people who moved to the western expansion of Swindon in Spring 1976. Two of their four children are now married and they have four granddaughters. Terry said, “for somebody who has never done a wedding, Errol did a fine job in making the day very special for the family.” Kate was relieved that everything went to plan. “My heart sank when I first met Errol and he said he didn’t know anything about the wedding, but he’s been great. He and his staff really made the day memorable for our family and friends.”

Angela Garrett, long serving administrator at Tregoze Primary School, was given a warm send off at a surprise end of term party in July. She was the last remaining member of staff who joined the school in April 1991 before it opened in September that year. “The end of term assembly was rather tearful,” said Angela. “The decision to retire now was made easier for me as Tregoze is now part of a federation of six primaries and the administrator role was changed.” To spice up her departure, Angela was taken by staff to see the Dream Boys at the DeVere Village. She plans to travel the world with her husband and spend time with her three grandchildren at her home in Wootton Bassett. • Tregoze has become part of the White Horse Federation which involves Moredon, Rodbourne Cheney, Drove and Mountford Manor Primary Schools, and Nylands Special School. A year 1 maths class at Greendown has claimed a reward from the country’s largest retailer Tesco for drawing attention to faulty goods. The youngsters wrote to the company saying that there was a high failure rate in the flexible drinking straws bought by the box load by their teacher Mrs Gilbert. The straws are used a great deal in maths classes but so many are broken when they come out of the box making them useless for calculations. On analysing a box of 225 straws the pupils discovered that not only was there a 20 per cent failure rate, particularly green ones, the box was two short. In July, Swindon children’s author Neil Griffiths cut the ribbon at the refurbished nursery which has been equipped with new resources. Inside he talked to nursery staff and parents about his passion and enthusiasm for storytelling, demonstrating its importance and how to encourage children to become life-long readers. ZooLab were on hand with a
collection of weird and wonderful creatures, from bunny rabbits to hairy spiders, and Music Bugs involved the children in some music making. Nursery manager, Niki Eyles, said, “the nursery looks great; we will continue to deliver the same high standard of childcare under our new name of Busy Bees Nursery.”

Free to explore: Lydiard House & Walled Garden throw open their doors on Heritage Open Days
Lydiard House and the restored walled garden at Lydiard Park will be open to visitors without charge on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September, 11am to 5pm, as part of Heritage Open Days, the annual national event which celebrates England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee. Take a tour round the restored ground floor rooms of the house to see the stunning plasterwork, elegant fireplaces, original furniture and portraits of the St John family, who lived at Lydiard Park for over 500 years.
Next to Lydiard House, St Mary’s Parish Church will also be open on Saturday from 11am to 6pm and Sunday 12noon to 6pm. Look inside this fine small church and view the famous St John family triptych, along with other exceptional monuments to the St John Family including the 17th Century tomb of Sir John St John and the Golden Cavalier – a life size effigy of his son, Edward St John, in full Civil War battledress. Find out the latest about the £1 million church restoration project. Outside, take a stroll in the lovely 18th century ornamental fruit and flower walled garden. The garden was
built by the St John family in the 1740s and fell into decline in the early 20th Century. After archaeological investigations and piecing together evidence from the collection in Lydiard House, the garden has been restored to its former glory. In the grounds discover the ice house, the underground freezer that allowed the St John’s to enjoy chilled food all through the year. Marking 25 years since works closure A visit to Swindon’s famous Railway Festival at Steam Museum on 10 and 11 September will transport you to the nostalgia of times gone by with many attractions lined up. Expect to see very rare steam cars, traction engines and road rollers outside the museum as enthusiasts and families alike gather to celebrate the world of steam railways. For model railway fans there is the chance to see some of the most detailed and elaborate working railway layouts in the country. Visitors will also meet pop
producer and railway fanatic Pete Waterman and many others from the railway world, including Hornby and Bachmann. This year marks the twenty-fifth anniverary of the closure of Swindon Works. A specially assembled photographic display will look back to the days when the town was dominated by the railway and the crisis that hit when the decision was taken to axe a major, though declining, employer. Swindon and Cricklade Railway will be celebrating their eighth annual wartime weekend on 10 and 11 September, with a packed programme of activities, demonstrations and train rides to keep visitors entertained.

Railway relation discovery at Nova
Beth Robinson, a year 7 student at Nova Hreod School, has been united with a model railway engine, built by her great-great-grandfather, that sits in the headteacher’s office. Reginald Hicks was a railway engineer and award winning model builder, creating fully working model railway engines from his coal house workshop in Moredon during the 1920s and 30s. “I’m quite proud of my great great grandad,” said Beth. “My mum, auntie and gran were chatting about the engine that he built at Moredon School, and Gran was worried that it might have been thrown away. I was shocked to find out that it’s here at Nova.” Reg worked on the Beth with Nova headteacher Julie Tridgell and Reginald’s legacy to education at Nova Hreod model during the 1970s with the help of Moredon pupils and been a feature of the head’s office metal work teacher John Wintle. the bigger picture With the completion of the West Swindon signage project, to encourage use of the extensive pedestrian and cycle network across the area, the bigger picture looks back over 25 years to the River Ray Parkway project to convert the former Midland & South Western Junction Railway line into a recreational route from Old Town to Moredon. A large number of railway themed direction posts were erected in the mid-1980s, but the fingers were easily moved by vandals and more often than not pointed in the wrong direction. Many remain in place but have become a sorry sight, bent or broken, pointing to an era when Thamesdown Council (now Swindon) aspired to providing high quality urban street furniture without regard to the cost of ongoing maintenance over the long term. Local history gallery hits 1m views
Swindon Council’s Library Service free online picture gallery at Flickr has celebrated its second anniversary by reaching the landmark milestone of over one million views. The gallery includes over 5,000 photographs, drawings, postcards, old documents, maps and plans, and stores a significant amount of information on Swindon’s heritage, the earliest image reaching back to the 1850s. On average the site receives 3,200 views per day and staff are constantly adding new images as only a fraction of the library collection has been scanned. High achievers are encouraged at Bradon Forest. We welcomed the English Baccalaureate as it gave an extra perspective for parents looking at school data. We were joint top of the table for schools in a 12 mile radius. Over the last 10 years we have maintained a broad and balanced Key Stage 4 curriculum that closed as ‘few doors’ as possible whilst challenging all of our students, irrespective of ability. We have resisted the temptation to inflate our ‘performance’ for the national League tables by running courses that attracted ‘points’, but which are of little real value in terms of progression. We believe that it is important that our students have access to the widest range of A Levels, particularly for those that go on to universities including Oxbridge (more than ten Bradon Forest students have now gone to Oxford/Cambridge in the last three years).
We produce all our promotional material in-house utilising staff and student expertise and our extensive ICT facilities. We only outsource colour printing because we can’t match the price! We believe in maximum investment in classrooms and our students.

Firefighter to run 9/11 anniversary challenge
Stratton firefighter Marcus Moore will take part in the most emotional race of his life – the Tunnel to Towers event in New York on 25 September. The 5km run/walk traces the path taken by New York firefighter Stephen Siller on 11 September 2001. Stephen had just finished his late shift when he heard about the first plane hitting the Twin Towers. To rejoin his colleagues he ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel with 60lbs of gear strapped to his back. He was one of the hundreds of emergency workers who lost their lives on that day, and the Tunnel to Towers event – which follows the route he took - was created to commemorate the sacrifices made. Marcus who lives in Shaw ran the New York marathon in 2009. “As I was running the marathon to raise money for the Fire Fighters’ Charity, I was able to visit the New York fire service training facility, and there’s a memorial there to Stephen Siller. It made me want to go back and run the event, the tenth anniversary of 9/11 is the right time to remember all the firefighters who died that day.” He’ll be running in full fire kit and wearing breathing apparatus. Link’s nomination helps Les reach next stage of torch relay Personal trainer Les Slinn is hoping to be one of the lucky runners who will carry the London Olympic 2012 torch for a one mile stage in its relay around the country. Nominations were invited for people who have made significant contributions to their communities and The Link and others put forward Les for his continuous support for Swindon Down’s Group and Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis. Les said, “I’m told the torch relay organisers looked at the total number of nominations then selected one to find out about the nominee. Apparently they pulled out The Link’s submission which took my name to the next round. So thanks to The Link and also all the other people

Greendown dad Peter Sweeney improved on his previous London marathon time by 30 minutes to complete April’s run in just over 3½ hours, raising over £750 for the Autism Spectrum Disorder Centre at Greendown School. He presented his cheque to headteacher Clive Zimmerman, right, at an end of year open day organised by pupils who use the centre so that the rest of the school and parents could
see the work that goes on there. A cake sale, stalls, quizzes and a table tennis competition raised a further £140 for outdoor equipment.

Denise Hughes had always struggled with her weight but it was a picture of her with Shrek at Disneyland that stimulated her to achieve a new look with Slimming World. “Apart from the fact he was green, we looked too similar for my liking,” said Denise. “I always hated having my photograph taken and this one was simply awful - but it was the push I needed.” She joined the Slimming World group at Taw Hill with her daughter and is on her way to shedding nearly four stones. Free social marks epilepsy group’s first year
Members and families of the Swindon Epilepsy Support Group (SESG) will celebrate its first anniversary with a buffet and disco at the Southbrook Inn, off Ferndale Road, on Saturday 3 September. The group was launched and monthly meetings continue to be supported, by members of the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown. “The group has certainly responded to a great need in Swindon,” said Rotary club vice-president Paul Parfrey. “Epilepsy sufferers of all ages and their families have found sharing experiences and advice of great benefit. Lewis Rogers from West Swindon is making a name for himself in the world of film and has been appointed a Filmclub Young Ambassador of the Year. Filmclub is a charity which provides pupils and teachers at nearly 5,000 schools across Britain with the chance to explore the world of film through after-school clubs. Lewis, who attended Westlea Primary School and Greendown, heard about Filmclub’s Young Ambassador scheme last year and put himself forward by producing a video of himself talking about his love of film and conducting an interview with his sister. Green flag for hard work Children at Orchid Vale Primary School ended the school year on a high when they received the Eco-Schools Green Flag award in recognition of their major commitment to recycling, litter picking around Haydon End as well as saving water and power in the school. During the year they made a trip to Swindon’s recycling centre at Waterside Park. The youngest children made several expeditions into the school’s extensive wild area and year 5 and 6 children spent a day making tip-taps out of plastic bottles which are used in African countries. Headteacher Debbie Kalynka said, “it was very exciting when we unfolded the flag; everybody worked really hard to earn it.”

Business advice back in Swindon A new foundation to offer business advice in Swindon is being launched in September to plug the gap left by the withdrawal of Business Link services after the government cutback funding. The Business Foundation and Enterprise Scheme is open to new businesses, those seeking to grow, or anyone needing expert advice. Sponsored by Swindon-based Banks Chartered Accountants, the foundation will be run by Keith Farmer, top, who was with Business Link for 13 years. Ke i t h , a n d Banks Chartered Accountants director Richard Mathews, below, came up with the idea. He said, “there is a real need for business advice in Swindon to help the local economy. Choir transforms lives with song The Swindon Scratch Choir, which is celebrating ten years, is open to new members in September. Organiser Linda Lee said, “Swindon Scratch Choir is a lively, friendly, community choir singing mainly for fun, but also doing the occasional performance. There are no auditions and you don’t have to read music. Songs range from cheerful pop, joyful African to sombre Russian. “Singing gives people great benefits; it can improve health and increase a sense of well-being. Swindon Scratch Choir has seen many people transformed by the joy of singing – someone recently said,
‘I came in with a headache and am leaving walking on air.’ We’ve seen confidence grow, friendships and a sense of community and belonging develop where there was none.” All ages and levels of singing experience are welcome - beginners and the nervous especially so. Just turn up on the night. Autumn term weekly sessions begin on Monday 26 September at the Pilgrim Centre, Regent Street from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
