With competition from the adjacent North Swindon District Centre and the road layout designed to lead shoppers there, the garden centre in Haydon End Lane has found itself by-passed and the volume of its business has diminished considerably in recent years. Alan's family has farmed at Haydon End Lane since 1916. He was born in the house he has had to sell and his mother came from Greenmeadow Farm, the farmhouse which was demolished to make way for Thames Avenue. As to the future, Alan said, "after spending our working lives advising and helping customers to create their ideal gardens, we now hope to use that knowledge to design and develop our new plot into a unique garden which maybe, in the future, we will open up so that the public can share it with us." Alan and Valerie are grateful for the support they have received over the years from their regular
customers. "It has made it all worthwhile," Valerie said. "We regard many customers as friends and this makes our decision to close so much more disappointing."

Safety hazards shifted to school gates. Head calls for urgent action. Since a series of humps were installed in May on Freshbrook Way, to slow traffic down and provide greater safety to children crossing on the way to Oliver Tomkins School, drivers have altered their routes and are now using Beaumaris Road outside the school itself. This now endangers children approaching the school from other directions. Paul Buley, who lives next to the school, said there had been a definite increase in traffic flow and also a change in driver behaviour. "The school traffic is heavy but parents knew how to negotiate the limited amount of space. Now there's a lot of commuter traffic avoiding the humps and delays on main routes like Whitehill Way. "Some of the drivers play chicken against each other to see who can get to a small space in the road first. It's also amazing that some parents will park on Beaumaris Road half an hour before school opens. They could walk their child to school and return home in that time." Junior school headteacher Elizabeth Wood expressed grave concern for the safety of children attending her school and the adjacent infant school. "There have been some very worrying incidents with cars riding up the curb to

There has been a definite increase in traffic from drivers who want to save a few seconds in their trip to work and are not so concerned about pedestrian safety; Beaumaris Road has been turned into a rat run. "We were not consulted about the humps on Freshbrook Way. Now the lives of children and parents approaching from other areas are being put at risk." However, rapid action by Swindon Council is not expected. Bob Sanders from Swindon Council's highway planning department said that the traffic studies undertaken before the holidays showed that traffic speeds on Freshbrook

Bike to church Ron Brock from Freshbrook, below, has taken over the administration of the annual sponsored bike ride which raises money for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. The trust helps preserve, repair and maintain, and restore, the churches in the county. Locally St Mary's in Lydiard Park has benefitted from a grant of £4,000 to help repair vandalised stained glass windows. Riders and walkers are needed for this year's church tour on Saturday 13 September. The idea is to visit as many churches as possible. Refreshments will be available at most. Cyclists and walkers will be setting off from St Mary's at 10am. Children will be going to the churches in the West Swindon area, older people will set off for a longer trip round North Wilts. A list of participating churches and sponsor forms are available from Eunice Salmon on 871606. Prizes are given to those who visit the most churches or raise the most money in the various age categories.

Hope for skateboarders The temporary skate park at the Link Centre opened during August, but the equipment has been put away until Swindon councillors consider, again, how they should respond to the long standing demands from young people across the town for a permanent facility. Cabinet member for education, councillor Gary Perkins said, "there are many hundreds of skaters in Swindon and we are trying hard to find a permanent solution for them. It's a credit to young people and parents who keep up the pressure." Lead member for culture and recreation coun Justin Tomlinson added that he was awaiting a report on the usage of this year's temporary facility. "If we can find the money we are proposing to provide permanent equipment in the Link Centre coach park because it is away from housing. But there are no guarantees; we still have to convince many other councillors." The message from skater Michael Merrick is blunt. "Young people have been waiting years for Swindon Council to do something positive; get your act together and make provision for youth." The Scouts took part in Channel 4s Big Dig on 29 June to investigate North Swindon's Roman history. Presenter Tony Robinson spent half an hour with the youngsters to see how they were working for their local knowledge badge which requires the youngsters to 'visit and find out about a famous old building, monument, earthworks or other place of historical interest' and presented each of them with their award. As part of the televised closing ceremony for the weekend's dig, the Cub Scouts took part in a Roman procession, where offerings of bread, wine, messages and incense were brought to the high priest. Funded entirely by the developers building the 5,500 houses at Priory Vale and commissioned by Swindon Borough Council within its Percentage for Art Policy, the internally lit steel and aluminium structure will be a visually striking landmark as drivers arrive in or leave the town. Chris Bagot from London based architects Softroom said the inspiration for the design comes directly from the shape of Junction 1. "The designers shortlisted for the commission were given an open brief to create a gateway to the town and its newest area of housing. "We set out to generate a positive spirit through the sculpture which will become a talking point and something which the community can unite around and give people a sense of place.

"Junction 1 provides entry and exit points to the newest part of the town and to older areas of Swindon. Drivers experience the sweeping curves from one direction and a single dimension. From above, the junction is a thing of beauty." The Swindon intersection is one of only two or three in the world where traffic passes on the 'wrong side.' Chris added that the design also uses references to Orchis Morio, the rare green winged orchid to be found at the Haydon Site of Scientific Interest on the western edge of Priory Vale. which has been adopted as the logo for marketing the housing development. "The shape reaching into the sky has taken on a floral form whilst the lighting from within draws on the colours of the orchid. It will be a different experience every time you pass because each side has its own form which will reflect light and shadow at different times of the day." Asked if the Junction 1 sculpture could become Swindon's Angel of the North. he said he hoped the design would be as well received as Anthony Gormley's huge winged metal figure close to Newcastle. "I hope our work will stimulate a celebration of Swindon." Swindon Council's public art officer Celia Yeoman said the proposed sculpture would generate a lot of interest in the town. Swindon Wide Lydiard regeneration project threatened by council pull out

Proposals to restore Lydiard Park as a place for even more Swindon people to enjoy could be scrapped if Swindon Council's cabinet decide to pull out of the project in September.
The first Children's Fete for sixtyfour years took place in fantastic hot weather on 9 August, reviving a Swindon tradition maintained by the Mechanic's Institution. The plans have drawn national recognition to the town, but the cash strapped council, facing major costs to develop social services and repair schools, would be expected to contribute an initial £500,000 and at least £25,000 a year for five years. Concerns that Lydiard could become a drain on council finances like the Steam Museum are a major worry. At stake is a possible £3.8 milli on Heritage Lottery grant and £100.000 already paid out by West Swindon based energy company Innogy, as well as a vast amount of goodwill developed in relations with English Heritage and the Countryside Agency. Councillors stepped back from pulling the plug in early August after urgent and heated negotiations with the stakeholder organisations, pending a report to the September cabinet meeting. Mike Bowden, Company Director of Innogy. said. "Lydiard Park can been described as a 'jewel in the heart of Wiltshire.' "It is a wonderful place for Swindon's population. With the breadth of people involved from across the community we believe it is a flag-

Haydon association postpones September meeting Until the end of June this year, the principle role of the Hayden Wick Community Association was the management of the Hayden Community and Leisure Centre. The lease of that building has now been surrendered and Swindon Council has assumed full responsibility for its operation. The associati on, a registered charity, has been in discussion with the Charity Commission about its future. When these discussions have been concluded, trustees hope to present to its membership - all adult residents of Haydon Wick - a list of options. However the proposals will not be ready by 15 September, the date of the already advertised AGM. The trustees would like Haydon Wick parishioners to note that the meeting will be postponed to a date, within the next three months, to be announced.
