Swindon Mayor councillor Maurice Fanning had a such fun on the Lower Shaw Farm rope swing that he returned for another go at a childrens activity day on 15 August. He is pictured with the Mayoress and youngsters who took part in making bread and biscuits, pond dipping, weaving willow withy mobiles, mixing pot-pourri and lots of fun playing around the farm. Families returned in the evening for traditional story telling around a camp fire. The autumn activities programme can be found on page 26.

Swindon's museums, libraries and arts venues show tions over the weekend of 13 and 14 September. Included are tours of Edwardian Old Town, Georgian floral displays at Lydiard House, free dance classes at the Town Hall Studios and lots of activities for children in the museums. Pop music at a Swindon school has really taken off and students will be showing off their musical talents at a cabaret concert in November at the Hilton Hotel on Great Western Way Greendown School in Grange Park has established a thriving music school over the last few years with an emphasis on pop and rock. Over 150 students took instrumental and singing lessons last year. So many want to show off their talents that concerts for parents are put on every half term. Now a fund raising dinner and cabaret evening is being organised for Sunday 23 November. Youngsters will perform for a wider audience, with proceeds going towards the development of the music school and also the BBC Children in Need appeal. Organised in association with Design-a-Cabaret, 250 guests will see the best acts selected at auditions during the autumn term. However the performers will not know the running order. The audience will have to bid for them to

Swindon Borough Council architect Simon Morris attended a committee meeting to present his ideas for the eight class 240 place school which will share facilities with a community centre to be built on the same site and located close to the village centre. Councillor Phil Rashid has complained about the hazard to people crossing the road but has been told that budget cuts has restricted the maintenance work programme. Roughmoor residents get together People living in Sparcells and Peatmoor are being invited to form a community organisation to get involved in developments going on the area. Now that a village centre and a school are to be built, well over ten years after the first people moved into the area, there is a need to gather local viewpoints as detailed plans are developed. Staff from Swindon Council's community and leisure services are organising two drop-in sessions to give residents the chance to find out what is going on and express an interest in forming a community association in the area. They take place at Sparcells Social Hall, Sparcells Drive on Wednesday 10 September, 130pm to 3pm and 730pm to 9pm. All residents are invited to attend.

Has it really been only one hundred days? A Cabinet full of fresh new faces; a dramatic Budget putting Labour's welfare-to-work plans at the centre of economic policy; the banning of handguns; new Education measures to raise standards in schools; devolution for Scotland and Wales; a new foreign policy, and much more - even a new Tory leader. All in three short, frenetic months. And all the battles to make sure Swindon's needs were recognised at Westminster. The discussions and negotiations may all be fading in the sweaty summer heat but the needs are still pressing. My maiden speech on the hospital crisis already seems a lifetime ago but the need to ensure the best possible care is as fresh as ever. Getting the go-ahead for the new PMH is just the beginning of a long process to ensure that the people of Swindon get the hospital they want. The struggle to get a canal bridge at Latton may have been won but now the work begins to get the canal network itself put in place. But for all the action at Westminster, my priorities have been in Swindon meeting constituents

and trying to do whatever I can to help them with their problems. I had never realised there were quite so many. Problems with traffic, health, education, the most tragic bereavements, anorexia, the Child Support Agency, benefits, disruptive neighbours, redundancy payments, and more. I am especially conscious of maintaining dialogue with the constituency. So I have been setting up meetings where people can come and hear what I have been doing for them in London and where I can hear what is on their minds: a meeting to account for my work at Westminster, a meeting on the new hospital and a meeting where the managing directors of Stagecoach explained the failings in their bus service to an irate audience. The first hundred days of any Government are obviously special - it is when the tone is set. I hope the tone is one of a Government determined to put right the problems of the last 18 years. Now the real test will be how well we deliver over the next five years - not how fast we have sprinted over the first hundred days.

The Wiltshire Festival in Lydiard Park was another cracker. The stage, sited this yearto show off Lydiard House, allowed even larger crowds to gather in blazing heat on 15 and 16 August. Conductor Jae Alexander once again whipped up the huge 8,000 crowds with his exuberant presentation and the Royal Philharmonic responded with rousing renditions of pop classics on the Friday. A World War II Spitfire performed amazing acrobatics and a lit up Hercules made a night time pass. Folk rocker old timers Lindisfame kicked off the Saturday Party in the Park. Boy band OTT had the girls screaming, Heaven 17 were just brilliant, but headline act Paul Young seemed to have laryngitist. Swindon has now really got something musical to build on. Could the fest. grow to three days?

She replaced the soil and along with her neighbours Elsie Woolford and Doris Kimber went out in May to buy seedlings to plant. Sadly Elsie was not able to enjoy the colourful display. She died in hospital in early June. Claire Burlison said that Freshbrook Village Centre had been receiving bad publicity lately and she was glad that the flower display gave a bright and cheerful feel to the area. "It's sad that Elsie is not here to see the lovely colours. The planters have been
empty for about ten years; we would all like to thank Marie for her hard work looking after the flowers."

Following an occupation by travellers of the Seven Fields Nature Reserve in August, supporters of the conservation area have vowed to do everything they can within the law to prevent another invasion and damage to the ancient meadow lands. A meeting of over 100 people formed 'Seven Fields Watch' to provide an early warning system to alert the police and Swindon Council to another approach to the site by travellers. The meeting thanked Swindon Council maintenance staff for their cleaning up of the worst of the
offensive material left by travellers and erecting stronger barriers to Seven Fields. Further clearing will go on for several weeks. Anybody who wants to contribute to the preservation of some of the best hay meadows in Wiltshire is asked to contact Marilyn Beale on 725067.
