Teacher departs One of Freshbrook School's longest serving teachers said farewell at the end of July. Heather Bishop joined the school in 1983, shortly after it opened with just one permanent building. Open air service to launch church in Abbey Meads set for 10 September Where is the church in Abbey Meads? Many people know that the plans for the first village centre include a church, but the church is, in fact, already there writes Rev. Roger Faulkner. The church, to be known as Christ the Servant, already has its first minister, Deaconess Maureen Spinks, who will be representing all the churches in Abbey Meads. She lives with her family, husband Ian and teenage children, at 1 Hayward Close, and it is this house that will be the centre of church
Minister, mum, electrician, angler ready for challenge Technically Deaconess Maureen Spinks, Abbey Meads new minister, was on holiday when she moved to Swindon from Wakefield on 8 August with her husband Ian and their three children. But a change is as good as a rest as they say. With help from her parents, the move went smoothly and Maureen was soon up ladders changing all the light fittings to make them suitable for the shades. She starts work on 1 September and one of her first tasks will be to walk the streets delivering a personal invitation to her open air commissioning on 10 September. "It's exciting to work in such a new area, but abit frightening too, said Maureen. "I've never done anything like this before and the brief is so wide. The church that comes together in Abbey Meads will be very much made by the people who have moved or will be moving here in the future. "Our house is more than a family home. There will be meetings, coffee mornings and toddler groups in the front room. Ihope to start Sunday worship services in mid-October. Anybody will be welcome to call round. I'd like to meet you - whether you have a connection with the church or not." In her free moments, Maureen will searching out the best fishing spots in the area. Abbey Meads community centre nearly ready A community building for use by people in Swindon's northern expansion will be ready for use at the end of September. Paid for by the Abbey Meads house developers, the temporary building will cater for local needs until a permanent community facility is considered in some years. People living in the area will by then expect, and be expected, to have a say in the kind of facilities to be included. The temporary centre, located next to the police post near the village centre site, will be managed by staff at Thamesdown Council's community development department. Subject to a fire officer's inspection, it will have a one room with a capacity of 50 adults, or 20 children in a playgroup, and a smaller meeting room, with kitchen and toilets, all accessible to people with disabilities. Bookings for parties and meetings at the Abbey Meads social hall can be made on 493489.
Another good year for college Swindon's New College is celebrating another impressive performance in this year's A-level results. The number of entries continued at a high level with 470 students sitting the exams. The pass rate was 88%, which is 2%up on the national average. 177 grade A's were achieved, with thirteen students gaining three or more grade A's. Maths achieved a 94% pass rate from 127 entries. English also had a 94% pass from 143 entries. The college is Wiltshire's largest A-level centre and has been top of the government's league tables for colleges in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Avon for the past two years.

Young people from secondary schools across Thamesdown will be discussing the future of the planet in a four day festival of youth, from 16 to 20 September at Roves Farm. The event, based on the Agenda 21 blueprint for sustainable development adopted by world leaders at the Rio conference in 1992, will give young people the chance to discuss environmental issues on both a world and local commtnity level. Population growth, combating poverty, energy use, waste, recycling and pollution will all be topics for discussion from a youth perspective. There will also be a practical element. Students will don gloves and sort clothing for resale in the third world or for industrial recycling.

What have birds and bees got to do with 'it'? How can parents talk to children about SEX, writes Chris Beer?
Every year girls become pregnant and young people are infected by sexually transmitted infections. Swindon's teenage pregnancy rate is currently higher than the national average and stands at 12 unwanted pregnancies per 1,000 young women under 16 years of age. The national average is 10 per 1,000. The Health of the Nation target is to reduce this figure by 50% by the year 2000. According to the Health Education Authority, over half of all 16 to 19 year olds in England have had sexual intercourse. So, where do young children learn about sex? Who tells them about their bodies and how they work? What do they see around them? Page three girls, condom machines, sex selling everything from cars to ice-cream. What do they hear? People laughing at dirty jokes, people laughing at anyone with a different sexuality from their own. What kind of messages do they pick up? Some bits of their bodies are rude and kept hidden. What about AIDS? It's on Eastenders and apparently you can catch it then you die! What do you want your child to learn about sex. You cannot leave

it all to the schools. Do you feel that you would like to brush up your knowledge and talk to other parents and learn a few tips on how to be prepared for awkward questions? If yes, then come along and learn together. Join the Birds and Bees group at two workshops on 17 and 24 September at the Link Centre. We shall be looking at how we learned about sex and how we feel about our own sexuality. What are the things that have influenced us in our lives and what values and beliefs will we pass on to our children? Perhaps we need a clearer idea of the facts and myths surrounding sexual health. Do we know about our body parts and how they work? Do we know about infections, contraception, periods, wet dreams? How do we help our children to feel good about themselves and their bodies? After all, if we teach children to swim, why should we keep them in the dark about sexual matters until they are teenagers and then push them in at the deep end as their sexual life begins? -

Matt Holland opines on Shakespere in the Park on 27 July If you have lived in Swindon for some years, particularly the west, you have doubtless enjoyed and made use of Lydiard Park in many and various ways. There's the family and friends barbecue and rounders session, the Sunday afternoon stroll, the squeals and tears time in the little ones' play area, a nature talk-walk with the naturally Mike-named rangers, any number of games of football, country fairs, pop music fests, kite flying conventions or even old attic tours! But would you ever expect to go there for your fix of Bardic humour, romance and intrigue? Well, one Saturday in late July, Shakespeare came to the Park in the shape of an open air performance by Heartbreak Productions of the comedy Much
Ado About Nothing. And it was a sell out. An audience of over 400 spread their picnics on the grass, collected their free glass of punch and with Lydiard House as stunning backdrop, settled down to enjoy a break from the Olympics. And they discovered that getting your Shakespeare al fresco has things going for it that the indoor experience does not. Like the sun's setting rays across a croquet lawn, the wood pigeon's coo, the pale moon rising over big trees, bats flitting by, and the slamming door of a portaloo. But these distractions were embraced as enhancements by the

Big turnout for Wiltshire Festival "Way-hay, its the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, bawled conductorJae Alexander after every couple of tunes as London's best cantered through well-known promenade numbers on Friday 16 August. Whether by design or navigation error, a low-flying Hercules lit up like a Christmas tree, made a dramatically low pass as the search lights pierced the starlit sky over Lydiard Park during the rendition of Ron Goodwin's 633 Squadron. It was all great fun and the capacity 6,000 crowd went away happy. Unfortunately, the amplification gave a slightly unreal sound whilst the sotto-voce rumble of generators during the quiet moments was more than irritating. And sadly, Lydiard House's fine frontage was hidden behind striped canvas catering tents.

Westlea Fire Station is the unusual venue for opera on 20 September. Hatstand Opera Company will be performing 'Golden Moments from Opera' in aid of the National Fire Service Benevolent fund. The Hatstand Opera was formed to bring opera to new venues and audiences across the UK and has been touring for over three years. There will be hilarious scenes, heart-rending arias from the world's favourite operas, quick costume changes and top-notch singing - a great evening of music and laughter for a good cause. Summer Pop Sensations on Saturday 18 August was a real hit for the 5,000 people basking in the sunshine. Suzi Quattro kicked the show into action, new act Lovatux put in a lot of raw energy and besuited Mike Flowers sweated in the heat as his band put out some cool melodies. Chart sensations Let Loose lapped up the screams of the kids at the front, but demonstrated a great rock and roll edge for the oldies further back. Big Country were wonderfully professional and the unique voice of Jimmy Somerville ended the starry night with disco beat and haunting songs of gay angst and oppression. It was a pity time ran out and, for fear of upsetting local residents, the expected encore was not forthcoming. Let's hope the big turnout this year will see the sponsors continue their support for future festivals.

The new Swindon ME Support Group to be launched on 3 September at Meadowcroft Community Centre, Upper Stratton, from l.3Opmto9pm aims to give them information, encouragement and support which can make all the difference to their recovery. Monthly meetings will provide an opportunity to share and learn from each other in a friendly and positive atmosphere. There will be visiting speakers and social activities. Busy month at Lydiard Park New ranger Paul Sweatmore writes:
After starting work at Lydiard in late June, it soon became apparent that much more went on in the park than I'd first thought. The outdoor Much Ado About Nothing, the Victorian walk/ play/history tour and the Wiltshire Festival has kept us all busy. So have the many Park and Countryside events, from the extremely popular animal masks and puppets afternoon to the evening tour of Lydiard on the 'Going Batty at Lydiard' bat watch, as well as the day to day running of the park. And I must mention painting bats on plyboard for educational games and making floating lanterns for the Coate Water 'Lanterns on the Lake' event. September will be no exception: On 1 September the 'Bishopstone and Above' six mile guided walk takes place in and around Bishopstone, east of Swindon. On Tuesday 10 September 'Riches, Ruins and Restoration' will take place, touring the stately rooms and discovering the story of Lydiard House and estate over the years. The 'Thamesdown Way' runs on Sunday 15 September. This is a ten mile guided walk from the Ridgeway to the Thames. For a fun day on Wednesday 28 September, the park will be over run with pirates and bucanneers of all ages. They will be following the 'Trail of Treasure' trying to find the chest of golden Dubloons.
Park users meeting To find out who uses the park and their opinions of it, a questionnaire is available at the visitor centre and in the house. There is also a Park Users Meeting on Tuesday 10 September, 7.30pm 8.30pm. Park staff and the public will be able to review past developments and make any comments or recommendations. Rapid responses on the M4
Toothill Credit Union can help for Christmas
Since I last wrote in July's edition, we have responded to 91 false alarms, 36 emergency special service calls and 71 fires writes Sub Officer Perry Payne from Westlea Fire Station.
It's only four months away! Started saving yet? A credit union is a 'people's bank,' run and owned by local people. It takes in savings and members can apply for loans at reasonable rates of interest. For example, a £100 loan over a year would cost £6.50 in interest. The profits of the credit union are returned to members in the form of an annual dividend. All money is safe because credit unions have to comply with rules laid down by Parliament and deposits are also covered by insurance. Whilst we have been busy, the figures for this time of year are very pleasing. After a long dry spell, we were expecting numerous grass/field fires, often started by carelessness, or in the worst cases, deliberately. This year we have had fewer such calls; this can only be due to greater care being taken. We have had a couple of incidents with interesting coincidences on the M4. The first involved a coach rolling over into a ditch. Unfortunately the driver was trapped and sustained a very severe hand injury, close to amputation. Luckily, an ambulance carrying a fully qualified paramedic was following. Needless to say the driver received the best possible treatment immediately, supported by a swift response and rescue by the two fire appliances from Westlea. Winners Many dozens of people entered the two competitions in last months Link. The winners to the Wiltshire Festival Summer Pop Sensation concert were Mr & Mrs Dance, Betony Close, Haydon Wick and Sylvia Wratten, Somerdale Close, Westlea The winner of a family pass to Bristol Zoo Gardens was Margaret Newman, Hartshorn Close, Woodhall Park.
The second incident was much less dramatic, but nevertheless ironic. A kind hearted driver noticed a car on the opposite carriageway on fire and stopped to report it on the motorway telephone. The policy of this bri gade, when receiving a call to the motorway, is to send one appliance on each carriageway, just in case the wrong one is reported or both are involved. The driver returned to his car only to see flames appearing from under the bonnet. Not many people manage to mobilise a fire appliance several minutes before a fire starts! Both incidents were quickly dealt with. Another call-out was a lorry fire in the early hours of the morning, again on the M4. Just prior to our arrival the police had closed the motorway completely in both directions: an early indication of a serious incident. The lorry, with 400 cylinders of compressed gases on board, was well alight and there was a possibility of a big explosion. Fortunately the crew, with assistance from colleagues from Stratton and Wootton Bassett Fire Stations quickly brought the situation under control.

She has recently gained a diploma from the London Regent Academy of Fine Arts and a City & Guilds certificate. Liz will take on a job from start to finish, or more usually she will provide design advice then carry out specialised work after the client does the basic preparations which cuts cost considerably. She will suggest the soft furnishings, carpets, furniture and lighting to compliment the colour scheme. Liz is highly skilled with interesting paint effects, stencilling, murals and hand painted furniture. She particularly enjoys decorating children's bedrooms and bathrooms where her ideas can flow and colour can used to best effect. She is happy to take on small jobs such as changing the character of a particular piece of furniture, or she will attempt any effect a client specifies.

The Haydon Centre's 5th anniversary celebrations on 10 August proved a great success with around 500 people attending free activities throughout the day, writes manager Dez Lewington. Children enjoyed a range of fa- admission fee to their annual Recreation Organiser at the centre, performed aerobics, turns 'n' cilities including bouncy castle, arts flower show. Garden show bigger than ever

Entries were well up at the Haydon Wick & District Garden Society's annual show held at the Haydon Centre on 10 August. On the exhibition floor, there was a tussle for honours in the Walklate family. Josie Walklate once again took first place in the flower arranging section, keeping daughter Carol in second place, the same positions as two years ago. Josie also beat Carol in the kitchen arrangements section. But Carol was not put out. "There's a bit of an edge when you're trying to beat your own mum, but it's just good fun putting in the entries." A proposal by Wiltshire County Council to develop a supermarket and shops right next to Haydon Leigh School was kicked out by Thamesdown Council's planning committee on 8 August. The land, adjacent to Westfield Way, was deemed as surplus by the County's Education Committee and terms were agreed with a developer to build within yards of classrooms at Haydon Leigh School. Residents expressed worries about road safety, noise and air pollution and school security at a public meeting called by Haydon Wick parish council on 10 July. Local councillor Kelvin King said he was pleased that the planfling committee had turned the application down. "1 would hope this is the end of the matter, but it's possible that further applications will be submitted. It sends a clear signal that there are major planning problems with the site which may not easily be overcome. "1 hope that Wiltshire County Council will reconsider the sale of the site and return it to the original intended use of education." Haydon Leigh School, a year old next month, is growing and mobile classrooms may have to be installed in eighteen months. The adjacent site may be needed for further expansion in due course.

volved in a road accident on Middleleaze Drive on Monday 29 July. He was cycling towards Pearl Road when a car hit him and he broke his leg. As a School Crossing Patrol Officer on this site, I have had increasing difficulty in seeing coming traffic because of the design of Middleleaze Drive. It is subject to a 30mph speed limit, but the road design encourages drivers to go faster at this point. The footpath going towards Pearl Road is almost concealed by shrubs and trees which have grown to well over six feet tall. Drivers have little opportunity to see pedestrians and cyclists. I have seen many drivers dangerously exceeding the speed limit in the last year. I had to report one driver for failing to stop when I was helping children to cross. If I had not been on duty, he might have hit five children aged between seven and ten.

I believe that another speed limit sign is necessary, as well as school crossing patrol signs. Railings to prevent cyclists from crossing carelessly would also help prevent future accidents. The trees and shrubs need cutting back and maintaining at a safe height to give a safe view of the road.
Last month, Katy Colley from Shaw wrote to The Link describing how a popular play tower in a nearby park had been burnt down by vandals. Thamesdown Council's parks department removed the debris, but Katy and her friends want another tower installed. "It was really stupid to burn it down; it was not fair on young children," said Katy. "The tower gave us a lot of fun. It had rooms inside it and you could hide from the rain."

Local Lives Farm of childhood memories The July Link magazine featured Wick Farm at The Prinnels, Shaw which is has been renovated into three properties and is now being sold for a combined total of £425,000. A group of West Swindon Christians wanted to convert the farm into a community support centre but their bid for the property was turned down by Thamesdown Council. This month we talk to Joan Rummings from Lydiard Tregoz who spent her teenage years in the farmhouse.
