The West Swindon Lions Club put Link magazine publisher/ editor, Roger Ogle in front of his own camera recently when club president Gloria Haynes awarded him with a Lion's Club Certificate of Appreciation, the first one since the club was formed three years ago. The presentation was Gloria's final duty at the end of her official year of office. She said, 'the award recognises the support that The Link magazine has given West Swindon Lions, with regular publicity and attendance at Lions events and also Roger'spatience and courtesy when items are rushed to him at the last minute." "The award was a greatly appreciated surprise," commented Link publisher Roger Ogle. "Our primary aim is to provide a useful, relevant, local and of course readable means of communication within the community. The Lions

They could be helping in a hospital, a youth club, the Red Cross, St John's Ambulance, in local churches or homes for the elderly or disabled - in fact anywhere there is a need. Entrants will be interviewed locally by independent judges and the successful candidate then progresses to regional level. Thirteen finalists will proceed to the district finals next year. Last year's district finalist was Vicky Cox, West Swindon Lion's nomination for her voluntary work with the Thumbs-Up special needs playscheme which meets at Greendown School in the holidays. Each district finalist receives a bursary of £500 and the overall winner gets an additional £1,000, all of which must be spent on the project with which they are working.

Youth project set back A plan to set up a youth support office at the Link Centre will go ahead, despite being denied a grant from a Home Office anticrime initiative. Wiltshire County youth committee have taken over the lease for a vacant office suite on the ground floor at the Link and new efforts are being made to attract cash to open a youth facility. A working party made up of representatives from Wiltshire, Thamesdown, the police and voluntary organisations has been

looking at new ways to cater for young people in West Swindon. Another part of the project is to rebuild two football walls in the Link Centre coach park which were vandalised four years ago. Youngsters now play football and hang around the entrance to the centre, which aggravates relations with other users. Steve Vaughan, Thamesdown Council's Sports Equity Manager, said there is a need to bring together and coordinate a whole variety of services for young people

in West Swindon. "We're disappointed by not getting the grant, but we are looking at alternatives. 'The area has a large and still growing teenage population, and the leisure facilities in the area attracts young people from further afield. There is a need to bring together statutory agencies and voluntary organisations so that young people can get information and advice in one place. We envisage help on health and drug awareness, teenage pregnancy and youth counselling.

Toothill Community Centre management committee member were shocked to find its licenced bar being stripped of booze on 24 August after the company running bar operations went bust. Bar revenue is a major source of income for the centre, but Thamesdown Council has promised to back the management committee. Centre chairperson Jean Carey said. 'The committee is disgusted by the failure of the bar trading company. It came out of the blue. A valuable service to the community has been lost, and the centre has lost important income."

GP gets go-ahead Toothill is to have another doctor. After a long battle with Thamesdown Council's planning committee, Dr Peter Swinyard has been given the green light to open his Phoenix Surgery opposite the village centre. He said he was absolutely delighted with the decision and paid tribute to local councillors Carver, Fanning and Yavuz for their support of his proposal. Dr Swinyard hopes to open his surgery in November.

Council community centre's officer Barrie Thompson said there is no question of centres closing. "I realise it's a shock for the management committee, but we will not allow centres to shut because the bar has closed. Officers will be providing advice and expertise and grants will be available to meet the financial shortfall." He said bar income had been dropping for about 10 years. Several centres prefer not to have bars and are very well supported by the communities they serve.

Company plans get residents' backing Moves by multi-national company Galileo to convert its data centre building at Windmill Hill into a new headquarters has been approved and welcomed by Grange Park residents living close-by. Externally new windows overlooking houses and two new entrances are to be installed. The company found itself in conflict with residents in early 1994 when it wanted to build new chimneys for diesel generators in the data centre. Residents suspected that electricity was going to be produced for the national grid and campaigned to block the scheme. Since then Galileo representatives and residents have worked closely to improve relations. Fifty

trees have been planted to mask the data centre which have thrived during the hot summer weather. Residents have been fully consulted over the new proposals says Eileen Sawyer from Hillyard Close. Open space consultations branded a 'sham' A Sparcells resident is accusing Thamesdown Council of organising consultations which are designed to divide the community. Mirek Rejek from Melfort Close says he and several others living close to the open space on Sparcells Drive think that the space is too small for the range of play facilities being proposed. Seven years after the first people moved into the area, Thamesdown Council is going to spend £102,000 on planting trees and shrubs and installing a toddler play area, adventurous equipment for older children, and an all weather tennis court size kick-about tarmac pitch. This is located 30 metres from the closest house overlooking the open space. But some residents are unhappy with the way they have been consulted. "Letters and a drawing were circulated inviting us to visit the council officers and talk to the designer," said Mirek. "No plans were displayed locally and there was no public meeting. The lack of facilities in the past has been frustrating, but this scheme is overkill. The area is too small for all the different elements to be put in. "The equipment for young children is necessary. But we are worried that the hard play area in particularis going to attract older children from outside Sparcells who will hang around causing noise, vandalism and disruption. "There were public meetings and lots of discussion about the Shaw tip site development, just a few hundred yards away. But here, next to where people live, the consultation was designed to prevent residents discussing the plans together on site. They are nothing but a sham to minimise objections."

However, Thamesdown Council landscape architect Matthew Hawkins said the council had a long standing commitment to developing the open space and residents' fears are unfounded. "We decided to take a different approach to consultation on this site by inviting residents to contact us, rather than hold a public meeting. There were positive and negative comments to the information leaflet circulated in the Spring and the plans were modified before being put to committee in June. "The open space is a fair size and there is enough room to cater for younger and older children. There are often complaints from teenagers that there is nothing for them. Our experience elsewhere is that they tend to use the facilities close to where they live and don't move around." He said that play areas had been moved closer together, away from housing. Items like a barbeque had been cut out. More shrubs will be planted to screen houses and there will be heavy bulb planting for Spring time colour. The Leisure Services Committee have agreed the plans subject to amendments put forward by local councillors who have the task of meeting individual residents during the summer. Building work is planned to start in the Autumn. Local councillor Denis Carver said the three ward representatives were discussing the revised plans for the open space amongst themselves. "We are formulating an opinion and will let residents know our views in the near future."

Sparcells organises against crime Sparcells residents have a special incentive to attend a meeting to expand the local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme on Wednesday 13 September. The meeting takes place at 7.30pm in the Chinese Experience restaurant and will be a chance to meet other residents over refreshments. Also present will be local councillors and police officers to discuss how Neighbourhood Watch can develop in the area.

Scheme coordinator Michelle Loyden said it is important for residents to organise themselves. Sparcells has a very low crime rate at present, but we must not be complacent. We need to get all households involved to keep an eye out for each other before people have to experience a break-in." Cafe cabaret invite The Haydon Players celebrate 50 years since the end of the war with an evening of entertainment at the Haydon Centre on 6 and 7 September. Charlie Chaplin, the Red Baron, three dancing cleaners, and a party of escaping army prisoners are part of the fun of 'Cafe Cabaret.' There will be dance, song, variety club extravaganza, a good old audience sing-a-long and a few surprises. The Players are renowed for putting on a good show and this one will be no exception. Funtathalon for the family The Haydon Centre is holding the first annual Funtathlon as part of the Thamesdown Games on Saturday 16 September. The Salt Way Judo Club recently entered players into a junior novices competition in Bristol to gain experience within a competitive environment. James Crier in the under 35kg class and Simon Bedwell (under 35kg), both from Shaw, won bronze medals. The club which meets at Salt Way School, Middleleaze has a friendly atmosphere and is coached by black belt and international referee Graham Turner. New members are always welcomed. Netball call up The new netball season is about to start and the Wootton Bassett Ladies Netball Club is looking for new members. The club runs three teams who play indifferent leagues. Training takes place in the Greendown School sports hall on Wednesdays between 8pm and 10pm, and

Pascal Watson with two GCSE students, Shahbaz Paymani from Peatmoor and Caryl Moreton from Wootton Bassett A French teacher is establishing more classes for children who want to learn the language. Pascal Watson, from Toothill, takes after-school French classes in five West Swindon primary schools and also runs small home learning groups. Pascal says, "It's so important for children to start learning a language early. They pick up the words, phrases and most important the accent. It gives them confidence and a very good start when they go on to secondary school when they are starting to get a bit shy." The primarysessions cost £2.50 an hour. Pascal Watson also teaches small groups of GCSE students. Her Wednesday class emphasises conversation and on Saturday she works on French grammar and exam preparation. Children's Day Freshbrook Church is holding a 'Thank God for Children Day' on Saturday 16 September, 12 noon to 4pm. Organiser Bola Clemo says, 'Children are a gift of the Lord. This has been true through the generations and that is how we all got here. The fun day atFreshbrook Church aims to recognise God as being the giver of children, and to encourage community spirit where people can meet and get to know each other.' There will be races for all age groups, drawing/painting competitions, a bouncy castle, a ball pool, book and craft stalls, plus refreshments. The day ends with an open air service between 330pm and 4pm dedicated to children and to the community. Everybody of all ages is welcome to attend. "It will do us good to acknowledge God and to encourage the positive things in our community," says Bola.

It's Mondays again The Mondays Group ic'ill be starting again on Monday 4 September announces Pam Pixton. Mondays is a group for women who want time and space to look at things that are important to them in their lives. In the past the group has talked about difficult behaviour in children, women's 'health and being assertive. It has also held sessions on reflexology, crafts, relaxation and dealing with stress. In the future we hope to look at massage, diet, coping with stress, expressional art etc. Every other week the group holds a general chat and mutual support session, which gives those who wish, an opportunity to share with others any difficulties they may be currently experiencing in a supportive and caring environment. The group meets weekly on a Monday between 12.30pm and 2pm in the Community Suite at the Link Centre. The group is free as is childcare. Letters to The Link

For about four months, this collection of trolleys has been collecting filth in the stream outlet next to the Whitehill Way underpass, on the main footpath from Grange Park to Toothill and the West Swindon Centre. Has anyone bothered to report them to Thamesdown Council or Asda? Has a council officer inspected the site. The Link has waited until now to see if they are removed. How long will it be?

With regard to my letter in the August Link: I would like to make it clear that no-one was at fault involving the injections against diseases in cats concluding in the misfortunate death of Elliot, my kitten. He was immunised but the probability of it being effective was slim. Most vaccinations have a percentage of preventing illness, but it is still worth getting them done. We have a new kitten now, called Macavity. She is fit and well and bundles of fun. Keep your cats that way too.
