Lions look for likely lads and lassies Youth with the right stuff needed for award scheme West Swindon Lions want to hear from youth aged between 15 and 18 years who are serving their local community. Theyoungsters could be helping in a hospital, a youth club, the Red Cross, St John's Ambulance, in local churches or homes for the elderly or disabled, or anywhere else in the community. And nominations from adults who admire the efforts of worthyyoungsterswillbewelcomed. The Lions will arrange interviews by independent judges at a local level and the successful candidate then progresses to regional interviews. The 13 finalists ultimately proceed to the district finals which will be held in the Midlands in February 1995. Each

More petition collectors wanted for hospital campaign The campaign to save the threatened Princess Alexandra RAF Hospital at Wroughton needs more people to collect names on a petition calling for the proposal, to close it to be dropped. Campaign organiser Jim Masters said there has been massive support in oppostion to the closure, but many more people have to express their views. "We need more help to collect petition signatures to show the Government that people in Swindon care about saving this hospital which is essential to the armed services, and to the National Health Service." Films not be seen at the MGM Foroverforty years theSFS has been providing films which would otherwise not be available to be seen locally. Their new season starts on 21 Septemberand once again their programme is both international and diverse. Films from nine different countries are in the thirteen film programme which runs until March next year. Such films include Belle Epoque the Spanish film which won the Oscar for best foreign language film, Germinal, an adaptation of Zola's novel starring Gerard Depardieu and the Mexican international success Like Water for Chocolate.
None of the four American films have been to the MGM and they include the latest Woody Allen film, Manhattan Murder Mystery. All films are shown at the Arts Centre, Devizes Road,on a Wednesday or Sunday evening and three types of membership are available: Full membership at £20, Half membership at £15, or Performance membership at £3, plus an additional £3 for each film that you attend. However, Neville, who departed on 10 August, said new ideas could be applied at little cost. "I'm impressed by how Wiltshire has developed so many new techniques. We can implement quite a few ways of tackling fires by adapting our existing equipment. Bigger projects will require bids into the budget." He said his observations of fire safety routines, station management, command and control of firemen at work will be shared with eight other colleagues on attachment in fire brigades around the country. The Wiltshire team spirit also impressed him. 'There's a remarkable level of motivation by staff at all levels; a great camaraderie which is focussed on doing the best job possible." Neville was recruited by a local cricket team hoping he would emulate fellow Trinidadian, cricket star Brian Lara. Buta 'no comment' with a wry smile was his answer to his performance.

Youth hip-hop to Germany Young street dancers from Toothill based Stone Youth II dance group put on a performance for the Prince of Wales in early July followed by a ten day trip to Thamesdown's twin town Salzgitter for a week of dance and legal graffiti art demonstrations. Fifteen 15 to 23 year olds performers made the visit after an invitation from German youth workers who came to Swindon last year. Compost scheme nears start date A scheme to involve Grange Park residents composting organic waste may get the go-ahead at Thamesdown Council's public works and services committee on 24 August. The Link has reported imminent start dates in the July and August editions. Hopefully, Grange Park households will receive invitations to compost waste in their own gardens or take part in a central collection scheme using special sacks. Village problems continue Vandals have been on the rampage again in Freshbrook. And bored youngsters are making life unpleasant for the elderly residents of Elsie Hazel Court, close to Freshbrook Village Centre. The Link has reported the damage to Freshbrook pharmacy windows and the battle pharmacist Sushma Patel is having with Thamesdown Council planners to get permission to put up protective shutters. Now vandals have twice destroyed fence panels erected next to Elsie Hazel Court elderly persons dwelling. Thamesdown workmen put a fence up in early July, only to return a few days later to replace it. Within two weeks, the second fence had been totally destroyed and the vandals had started on another new fence closeby, opposite Dr Red dy's surgery. Resident Elsie Woolford said it was really frightening to see children and teenagers wrecking the fence so close to her flat. "You dare not call out; you just get abuse or there might be a stone through your window." Another resident, unwilling to be
named, said there is some kind of incident virtually every night. "It might be small children throwing stones against a window or a large group of teenagers shouting at each other. One 95 year old who lives next to a footpath had a window smashed in recently.

Hopes for pharmacy shutter Just after The Link went to press on 22 August, Thamesdown Council's planning committee were due to debate an officer's recommendation that shutters should be permitted over the windows at Freshbrook pharmacy. We have featured the problems faced by pharmacist Sushma Patel in the last two editions of The Link and hope the councillors planning committee support her request to be able to protect her business adquately.

My name is Lucy Jones and I live in Freshbrook. At last years' Shaw Fun Day we ran a balloon race to raise money towards an outdoor powered wheelchair for myself. On the right is a picture of myself letting off one of the balloons. 179 balloons were entered in the race. 15 were returned including 5 from France! Westlea School pupil Daniel Thomas-Rashidwaspickedfor the part of Baby Face One hundred and twenty young hopefuls turned up forauditions attheWyvern Theatre's first ever youth project at the end of July to learn, rehearse and produce Bugsy Malone in just ten days. Acting, singing and dancing parts were found for all under the direction of professional stage, music and dance directors. Five performances were put on after intensive rehearsals. Youngsters keen on helping back stage were able to work alongside Wyvern staff in getting the show together.

Blooming good show Entries were up this year for Haydon Wick & District Garden Society's Summer Show, held recently at the Haydon Centre, drawing 130 entries from the area's keenest amateur gardeners. "Because of the weather the flowers have been disappointing this year, but we had some excellent handicrafts" said chairman Ron Walkiate, 'The domestic judge Mrs Maureen Swanston said the standard is improving every year". Despite the weather worries growers managed to produce a colourful army of blooms, fruit and vegetables, with society founder members Bill and Win Cooper scooping a total of seven first prizes and three trophies between them. "We're preserving the village show atmosphere", said Ron Walkiate, "This is a show for ordinary gardeners who may not otherwise enter for an event like this." He expressed disappointment that there were no children's entries at all. Previous years have seen a lot of enthusiasm from youngsters. Overall best exhibit in the show was judged to be a landscape painting by Mrs Parry with other trophies going to Ron Walklate (hanging baskets), Chris Werrell

Haydon Wick Writers were inspired recently by 82 year old Phyllis Lester who spoke to the group about 'Writing for Radio'. This remarkable lady, born the daughter of a farmworker on the Goddard Estate at Upper Upham, took up writing in her forties and enjoyed an 18 year career which took in 45 Morning Stories, scripts for schools broadcasts and 'AStoiy, A Song and A Prayer' for BBC raDid you go to Ferndale Road School? Prospects and Promenades,a guided historical walkaround LydiardPark will take place on Wednesday 14 September, 230pm - 3.30pm. The walk is designed to show the historic landscape schemes at Lydiard park, pointing out features which still remain on the ground and identifying the lost terraced gardens of Elizabethan times and formal avenues of days gone by. This is a voyage of discovery showing the evolution of the park, the changing fashions in landscape design and the importance - social, visual and economic- of the relation of the home to its setting. The walk will be of general interest to anyone who already knows and enjoys the park, as well as to a first-time visitor. Tickets, £1 adults, 50p children, may be bought on the day at the House. Ron Bye, manager of the Clarke Homes Longmeadow site in Shaw A manager on a West Swindon building site has just been commended for his site management, his seventh award in ten years. Ron Bye,a site manager for Clarke Homes at The Prinnels, was presented with a National Housebuilders Council Pride on the job' in July. All the sites he has managed during the last sixteen years with Clarkes have been situated in West Swindon, starting with Blenheim Park, off Liskeard Way, Freshbrook in 1978. Altogether he has been responsible for366 house occupations. There are some 20,000 site managers across the country and during the last ton years Ron's name has appeared in the list of top 100 managers on three occasions. His work has been commended 4 times (for getting close to the top 100), and he has won the South West title once, which means he was one of the top 10 site managers in the country.

The voluntary sector under unitary status Last month, Thamesdown Council leader Tony Mayer explained how education would be managed when Swindon takes over duties and responsibilities from Wiltshire County Counci. This month Councillor Mayer describes future help for voluntary organisations This year Thamesdown Borough Councilwillprovidefundingtoover 50 voluntary groups, costingaround £1 million, which is nearly half of the total Community Development budget. The County Council spends approximately the same amount on the same number of groups in Thamesdown, a smaller proportion of its total, but an important contribution nevertheless. The voluntary sector is a major force in our community, and one whose role is increasing. It offers specialist services and flexibility independently of the Council The voluntary sector is not a cheaper option, but it can be a better one and that is why the Borough and County Councils provide substantial funding every year. Some groups such as the Women's Refuge offer specialist professional services. Others, like Grub Busters in West Swindon, or the Over-50s Forum have no major funding but provide an equally valuable service to local residents. Many of the County Council funded groups like Swindon 12-18 Project, or the Law Centre operate undercontract, which matches services to funding. A Unitary Thames-
down would take over responsibility for all these groups, some of whom will have ongoing contracts, whilst others will receive annual funding. Existing financial commitments will be honoured and, although we cannot make firm pledges, we would aim to ensure that at least existing levels of funding would be available for the voluntary sector. Under the present arrangements, that section of the voluntary sector which receives council financial support is artificially divided between those funded by the County and those funded by the Borough. One council would mean one set of forms, one set of rules and criteria, and one point of contact. The existing commitment to consultation will continue, e.g. the annual pre-budget meetings, and where these can be improved upon that will happen. Groups who are based outsideThamesdownbutprovide a service within will still be eligible to apply for funding. We aim, by working more closely with the voluntary sector, to see a stronger, more confident voluntary sector and a healthier community.

Volunteer work can give a new direction The traditional image of doing good for the needy is well outdated nowadays, says Thamesdown Volunteer Bureau manager Heather Malcolm. "Voluntary work has become a way of find ing out more about yourself as well as doing something useful in the community. It can help young people broaden their outlook, it can help the unemployed gain confidence; for others looking for a change in job, voluntary work can add to an application form and can provide an up to date reference." She added that many peoplewho have got a lot out of life want to put something back into the community through voluntary activity. The Volunteer Bureau provides the link between individuals offering their time with the organisations needing help. A recent innovation at the Volunteer Bureau has been the setting up of The Volunteer's Jobshop, staffed by trained volunteers who provide guidance and information about the wide range of volunteer work opportunities in and around Swindon. Courses for women across Swindon The new Swindon WEA Women's Branch Autumn Programme starts in mid-September. All their courses offer opportunities to learn new skills, whether for employment, or for fun. Kicking off the new season is a one day workshop on Saturday 17 September, 10am - 4pm at Milton Road Health Hydro. Responding Positively to Stress, is a chance to focus on yourself and any personal areas of stress. The day will introduce you to positive exercises to help you deal with your own specific stresses. Cost: £12.50 (2.50 concessions).
Make your Experience Count is a free 10 session course on Mondays 1 p to 3pm, starting 19 September, aimed at those who have spent their time primarily in the home caring for family and are thinking of making changes in their lives. On 23 September the popular New Opportunities for Women course begins. Designed for women who are trying to decide where to go next, the course aims to give you increased confidence, help with interviews, CVs, etc., and information about training opportunities. There's help with childcare and travel expenses. The course runs for 15 sessions on Fridays 930am - 2.30pm and is free. Would an Introduction to Computers suit you? This is an introduction to basic computer skills for women, tutored by a woman. Sessions will include word-processing, database and spreadsheets. If you don't really know what these terms mean, don't worry! No previous experience or knowledge is necessary; the tutor knows you may be nervous and unsure. Wednesdays, 6.30pm - 8.30pm, 8 sessions starting 28 September. Cost: £33.75 (6.75 concessions). There are also courses on Assertiveness, Writing, Women's Spirituality and Drumming. The closure of the hospital will be a major blow to the economy of Wroughton and will also add an increased burden to the medical facilities atPMHata time whenSwindon is due to increase its population by approximately 20,000 with the northern development expansion. Hopefully the Government will see sense and allow the hospital to
remain as an NHS hospital catering for the needs of the people of Swindon and the surrounding area. I would urge all those who oppose the closure of such a fine hospital to make their feelings known by writing to the Prime Minister or local MI', Simon Coombs, who it must be remembered, holds his parliamentary seat with a slender majority.
Doctors' bills for holiday Insurance From DJK Miller, Queen borough, Toothill Persons taking regular medication who insure themselves when they go on holiday maybe unaware of an extra expense they could incur. Most insurance companies require such persons not to be travelling against medical advice or without a certificate of fitness to travel from their medical practitioner. My travel agent informed me that if a claim is made under the policy and no certificate is held the company would normally ask the doctor for some form of certification.
At the Ashington House surgery the fee for a certificate is £50, and it is the stated policy of the practice not to give any certification, either prior to or after the beginning of a journey, unless a full medical examination has been carried out. Travellers taking out holiday insurance should closely examine the small print of their policies, because if they are on regular medication and do not have an examination before travelling they could find themselves excluded from benefits.
