Everyone can make a difference and play their part Climate change dominated global headlines in November, and rightly so. The 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) that took place in Glasgow last month, was the most significant climate event since the Paris Agreement in 2015 when world leaders agreed to limit global warming to well below 2°C, and pursue efforts to further limit it to 1.5°C. COP26 saw countries from across the world put forward their plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and was the catalyst for a number of new pledges, including commitments to tackle deforestation, cut methane emissions and shift away from the use of coal. The conference also made one thing abundantly clear – an urgent concerted effort is needed if we are to secure our futures and the futures of our children and grandchildren. There is no longer time to wait. That may sound overwhelming, but it doesn’t need to be. As we approach winter there are a number of things we can all do to limit our impact on the environment, and one of the most effective places to start is in our homes. The UK’s 30 million homes account for more than 21 per cent of the UK’s total carbon emissions, with around 75 per cent of this coming from our heating systems - that’s why reducing the amount of home energy we use is not only great for our pockets but for the environment. In November, as part of the Be the Change campaign and to align with COP26, the council hosted a Facebook Live Q&A with the Centre for
Sustainable Energy to help residents reduce their home energy bills as well as their carbon footprint over the winter. The discussion covered a number of important topics including rising energy prices and how to heat your home more efficiently. Don’t worry if you missed the discussion, here are the three main things to take away from the event. 1. Your energy bills and carbon footprint are closely related so anything you are doing to reduce your bills is likely to be reducing your impact on the environment too. One easy way to save yourself money is by reducing your shower time to four minutes. 2. Every year, energy suppliers offer eligible customers on lower incomes £140 off their electricity bill to help with the costs of heating their home over the winter. You can check if you are eligible for the Warm Home Discount scheme by contacting your energy supplier. 3. You can monitor your energy usage in real-time by upgrading to a smart meter. With a better understanding of your usage, it’s easier to make small changes in your life to reduce your energy consumption and spend less on your energy bills. Last month, Swindon Borough Council completed the installation of the borough's first ever on-street electric vehicle charging bays, in order to encourage more residents to make the switch to a zero emission vehicle. In total, 11 new double-headed electric vehicle charging points, totalling 22 bays, have been installed in key locations chosen by residents. Following completion of a survey last year to find out where demand for electric vehicle charging points was highest, as well as a successful Government funding bid, the 22 charging point parking bays have now been installed in several areas across the Central and Eastcott Wards. While there will be a cost to use the charging points, 25p per KWh, or around 7p per mile, it will be cheaper than a petrol or diesel alternative. The charging points will be operated by EB Charging, and users can download the EB GO! app to manage their charging. All residents and visitors with a valid Resident Zone Parking permit are welcome to use the bays to charge their electric vehicles, and it is hoped their installation will encourage road users in the local area to consider the switch to driving an electric vehicle. www.swindontravelchoices.co.uk/gettingaround/car/electric-vehicles/

Wheelchair user Grace has ideal outfits thanks to vital organisation By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk A Swindon dad has praised local charity Dressability for altering clothes to suit the unique needs of his daughter. Westmead-based Dressability, one of only two charities of its kind in the country, specialises in altering clothes to suit the needs of people with disabilities and mobility issues. Chris Woolley is full of praise for the organisation after it helped his nine-year-old daughter, Grace, who uses a wheelchair. Dressability's work has aided her mobility, dignity and ability to take part in everyday school life. Chris said: "What Grace was born with was a condition called Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency. It's usually referred to as PFFD. "It's a genetic condition. The main problem that Grace had
when she was born was that she had no hips and no femurs - so she has very short legs. "The big problem we had was that because of Grace's condition - she's bigger at the top - trying to find clothes off the shelf was a nightmare. She's nine years old but she wears tops for 13-year-olds and bottoms for six or sevenyear-olds. "That was where Dressability came into it. A lot of Grace's schoolfriends wear the school
dress, whereas for Grace that was not an option because of how the dresses fit when Grace is in a wheelchair. It's not always suitable or comfortable for her. "One of the ladies at Goddard Park suggested we contact Dressability, which we did. It kind of started from there." One of Dressability's first projects for Grace was the creation of trousers with extra padding in the seat, as at the
time Grace preferred to scoot about on her bottom. Chris said: "They've also done some school dresses for Grace, making them more practical for her in the wheelchair - everyday things that we take for granted, such as going to the toilet, getting changed for PE, that kind of thing. "The modifications that Dressability have made make it easier for Grace to live her life." Chris now does all he can to help promote Dressability and its work, and urges people to help the charity if they are able. He said: "They don't get the recognition that they deserve. "They can take a problem and make that problem go away - and there aren't many people who can do that for a disabled person." Swindon Borough Council asks residents to keep themselves safe from covid-19 this winter After cases of covid-19 reached exceptionally high levels last month, residents in Swindon are being urged not to become complacent and to continue doing their bit to tackle the spread of covid-19. Heading into the winter months which already cause additional pressures on local health services, there are several key things people can do to reduce the spread of the virus in Swindon and help protect those around them. Those residents who haven’t yet had a first or second dose of the covid-19 vaccine are being encouraged to do so, alongside those who are now eligible for a booster vaccine. More information about vaccinations can be found on the NHS website. Vaccinations for 12 to 15-year-olds at the Steam Museum can also now be booked through the National Booking System. Regular Lateral Flow Tests (LFTs) should continue to be taken twice a week, even if residents don’t have symptoms of covid-19. Crucially, anyone who does have symptoms, has received a positive result from an LFT, or has been contacted by NHS Test and Trace, should self-isolate and book a PCR Test as soon as possible. These can be done at multiple sites in Swindon or by ordering a home-testing kit. More information can be found on the NHS website. Charities call for our help to keep homeless and vulnerable safe By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Three major Swindon charities have been gearing up to make the winter months as safe and comfortable as possible for the vulnerable. However, Threshold Housing Link, Christmas Care Swindon and Dressability cannot do their work without the help of Swindon people, businesses and other organisations. At the time of writing, Threshold - Swindon’s longest established homeless relief charity - was getting ready for its annual Big Swindon SleepOut on Friday, 3 December. This event has for years raised funds essential to the continuance of street-based

The annual event is typically one of the largest of its kind in the South West region. Like all homeless relief charities in the UK, Threshold relies heavily on the generosity of the local community. Chief Development Officer Michael Keenan said: “Threshold is a Swindon based charity, serving the community for half a century. It is a sad thing that our existence and demands on our service remains so relevant today, 8
we head into winter and also to drive our new projects "We could not meet as a group last year for our annual BIG SleepOut, but we hope very much that supporters who can do so will join us this year as we meet together at the Supermarine Sports and Social Club." Threshold owns multiple resettlement project houses and have purchased an additional one this year as a specialist women’s project house. The charity is also currently increasing its housing stock through working with private landlords to acquire further accommodation to meet the high demand for specialist
supported housing. The charity, which is based in Westmead, is only one of two in the country that helps people of all ages with disabilities or mobility impairments to adapt their clothing for their needs. The charity also works a lot with homeless organisations, creating more than 100 blankets to help every year. It is now calling on businesses across the Swindon area to donate any unwanted surplus clothing so the charity can 'de-brand' the items and hand them to homeless charities. Sharon Tombs, who manages the charity, said: "It was one of my trustees, Alison Wraight, who came up with the idea as she works in marketing. Essentially there are so many businesses and printers out there who would have 'never been worn' branded clothing that they could easily donate to us. "At the moment there is a lot
of talk about how we shouldn't waste resources and this is one way that these bits of clothing can actually be put to good use rather than heading for the landfill." It serves people who are homeless, isolated or otherwise vulnerable, and always welcomes enquiries from potential volunteers and anybody else who might be able to help in its work. It is also grateful for donations. The charity provides its clients home-cooked food, personal care and, perhaps most importantly, a little cheer over the festive period. Christmas Care's services for this year will be run from The Haven Day Centre, Queen's Drive, Swindon SN3 1AR, and will run from 24-30 December
from 9am to 9pm daily. There will be three volunteer shifts of four hours, and services will be available from 9.30am until 4.30pm. As of the time of writing, the charity prefers its volunteers to be fully vaccinated against covid, and volunteers will be asked to wear masks and abide by safety precautions. Firefighters' festive safety advice Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a list of tips to keep the public safe over the Christmas period. The advice includes ensuring all smoke alarms are working and that there is an adequate supply of batteries, checking that lights conform to British safety standards, never overloading electrical sockets and ensuring candles are kept away from Christmas trees and never left burning unattended. December closure for House of Fraser House of Fraser has formally announced a final December closure for its branch in Swindon's town centre. The store joins a roster including Debenhams, Sainsburys and the Morrisons anchor store at the Regent Circus Development. Last September, House of Fraser announced that the store was at risk of closure, only to remain open following talks with Brunel Centre bosses. House of Fraser was bought by Sports Direct in 2018.
Young Christmas card contest winner Eimile Boden, a Year 6 pupil at Lawn Primary School, has won the AMS Accountancy Ltd annual Christmas card design competition. Eimile won a £25 Amazon voucher and AMS donated £250 to the school. The firm thanked headteacher Kelly James and deputy Emma Jelley for allowing the competition to be run again. 10
New Swindon community hub and art space opens By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Performers, poets and pop-ups were on hand for the weekend opening of Swindon's new community hub. Based in the former River Island building, Swindon Hub aims to provide a welcoming café and community arts space, areas for meetings and events and pop-up stands for start-up businesses and local traders. The project has been brought together by a group of volunteers, united in their aim to bring life to the town centre, to support communities and people from all of Swindon, and to raise awareness of issues around climate and sustainability. “It’s been a long haul with plenty of ups and downs - but we’re finally ready to open our doors this weekend,” said Ed Colton, one of the volunteers behind the project, shortly

before the opening. The Hub is open daily between 11am and 6pm, but closed on Mondays. Poets and performers provided entertainment throughout the opening weekend, and the Hub cafe served hot drinks, sandwiches and samosas. To celebrate the opening of Swindon Hub, a special exhibition of local photographers’ images on the theme of ‘Celebrating Swindon’
was on display. The project also hopes to support the regeneration of Swindon’s town centre, targeting the problem of empty shops and the need for a community space where groups and individuals can interact, exchange ideas, and share resources in a sustainable, low cost venue. Green light for new covered sports venue STFC Community Foundation has secured planning permission for a covered sports facility at Foundation Park. The news is described by the foundation as a massive step forward in strengthening its comprehensive range of football and multi-sports-based programmes. The covered facility, to be located on the redundant bowls club site adjacent to the existing Foundation Park facility, will offer small-sided football as well as community multi sports sessions for vulnerable, disabled, young and elderly people - sessions which can currently be impacted by poor weather. Foundation head Jon Holloway said: “This is another significant milestone for the Foundation, following on from the delivery of Foundation Park and developing our own centralised facilities. "The chance to now redevelop the redundant bowls

club represents a significant opportunity to create a fantastic additional facility, which will further enhance the beneficial work we undertake within the local and wider community. "Finally, we’d like to thank the wonderful support that our participants, partners and supporters have given us to help achieve this planning approval, we will now work hard to secure the required funding to complete this wonderful facility.” The foundation currently works with more than 30,000 people per year.

Hundreds attended Swindon Remembrance Service By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their loved ones solemnly observed the twominute silence as the Town Hall clock struck 11am on Remembrance Sunday. Some wore medals denoting their service, and others wore medals on their right breast, indicating that they were present to pay tribute to the service of a friend or loved one unable to attend. In addition to gathering around the Cenotaph, people assembled along much of Commercial Road for the traditional parade following the ceremony. The dignitaries laying wreaths were led by Mayor of Swindon Cllr Garry Perkins. He said afterwards: "We normally have maybe three or four hundred, but today it's been phenomenal. You couldn't
see the end of the crowd looking down the street, and there were people all along Commercial Road. "It's really been a fantastic turnout. It's what one always hopes for from Swindon and I think that coming together after a long, long year and a half has given residents the chance to show what they stand for." Other dignitaries present included High Sheriff of Wiltshire Sir Charles Hobhouse Bt and Bishop of Swindon the Rt Rev Dr Lee Rayfield. Music was provided by the Swindon Brass and Army Cadet Force bands, along with Swindon Male Voice Choir and opera singer Eliana Pretorian.
A new fitness app comes to town
Winter workouts just got a whole lot easier with the Active Swindon Challenge app. The popular Swindon initiative, which was originally launched back in 2014, has returned after undergoing a major upgrade. Players can choose to either take part on their own or as part of a team and can see how they fare against other players in Swindon through individual and team leader boards.
Points and prizes are also up for grabs in time-limited challenges. The Active Swindon Challenge app can be downloaded for free in the App Store or through Google Play and participants can revolutionise the way they move around. Reconstruction work at White Hart roundabout completed The White Hart roundabout reopened last month to motorists after being closed in August. Contractors Osborne Infrastructure Ltd have carried out reconstruction work to increase the life expectancy for the road. Although the roundabout has been opened, the council says work is continuing on site and traffic management remains in place on the carriageway, including lane closures and temporary signage. Swindon City of Sanctuary receive lottery funding Swindon City of Sanctuary has been given five years' funding totalling £235,000 from the National Lottery to help make the town more welcoming and inclusive. Swindon Mental Health charity records re-written Christmas single to spread awareness By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk
The community of IPSUM Mental Health charity have come together to record a re-written version of the Live Aid track 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' This seasonal single aims to spread mental health awareness. IPSUM has two music studios available to support mental wellbeing, and the recording of the audio and visuals for the music videos took place in their basement studio - Studio 13. The IPSUM team strives to encourage new and exciting ventures, and during a team meeting, a discussion took place around a Christmas 'Live Lounge' feature. Mike Beckley, IPSUM's Music Studio Facilitator, recorded each individual participant separately, bringing each sound bite together, creating the Live Aid-style amalgamation of voices for the finished product.

He said: "Our IPSUM community, were supported by the team to write the lyrics for the single and organise for everyone who wished to take part, to come and get involved. Once the lyrics were agreed and written, those interested in being on the track, were assigned a line or two, depending on how much involvement they were comfortable with." The support centre's community said they felt it would be poignant not to do a Christmas song, but instead one that spreads awareness of mental
health struggles. Although the club is currently operating with a decent number of players, there is a recruitment drive underway for at least seven more. Club members currently attend badminton sessions at the Haydon Centre on Tuesday and Friday evenings from 7-10pm. The sessions are for anyone aged 18 or over. Karen Young, Club Chairman, said: "I joined the club in 2008. We’ve currently got 21 members but we need a few more. We would especially love some more ladies! "We are looking for people who play at a reasonable standard so they play straight away as we do not currently have the facilities or resources for coaching.
"We’ve got people of all ages and a mix of multicultural players and welcome anyone and everyone." Karen's husband, Kevin Young, the club's treasurer and covid officer added: "We're a nice, socially competitive club. I've been playing here for over 10 years. We all have a laugh and improve our game without taking ourselves too seriously." Potential new members are invited for a trial period of five or six sessions, to see if they enjoy the club and feel they would like to become an official member. Existing members will take a vote to ensure the team keeps up their playing standards. If the vote is positive, the individual will be invited to become a member. Fees are £25 per month and are paid via bank transfer. A

It's been quite a year in Old Town By Judith Randell-Sly of Old Town Residents Association
As the year draws to a close we can reflect on an eventful year, starting with another lockdown in January, when yet again many shops closed and we could not mix with other households. Then came vaccinations and gradually we were able to meet up once again, but the cost to local businesses has been huge and sadly some have not survived. Although covid cases have soared since the autumn fewer of us have been sick enough to need hospital treatment and with the roll-out of booster jabs it looks as though we will be able to celebrate Christmas with family and friends and hopefully support our local businesses. In the summer we were hit with news of the probable
closure of the museum and art gallery at Apsley House and it now appears the collections have been moved to the Civic Offices, but it is not clear when and if they will be on public display. Let us hope that the plans for the proposed new art gallery in the town centre development will be speedily expedited, so that the collections can again be on permanent public display. The OTRA gardens group continued working once we were able to meet outside and during July our gardens were judged as part of South Swindon Parish’s entry for Britain in Bloom, in a category called In Your Neighbourhood, which is not just about the planting, but concerned with improving the locality. They all did very well, but to get the highest marks we need to focus on some of the non-gardening
aspects, such as painting the iron railings around the Station Approach bed. If you think that you could help with this, even on a one-off basis please get in touch with Linda: lindakasmaty@hotmail.com South Swindon Parish Council want to encourage more people to volunteer, particularly to look after other urban patches that need some care and attention. Volunteering need not mean that you have to give up a great deal of time and not necessarily every week, but every hour is helping your community in some way and it is also a good way to meet other people in your neighbourhood. The Old Town gardening group has grown to six regular helpers this year, most of whom had never met before, but we all learn from each other and enjoy being together.
The Town Gardens’ Enchanted Lights Trail opens on 2 December and is being produced by a company which does lighting presentations for the National Trust and for festivals. There is a mixture of static mood lighting and moving lights, including an interactive display and a son et lumiere in the Bowl. It is open every night in December, apart from Christmas day, between 5pm and 9pm and until 10pm at weekends. Entry is by ticket only and these are available on the Skiddle website. as the charity beneficiary for this magical event. Grounds Maintenance The Parish completed its first summer/autumn grass cutting season with directly employed staff after groundworkers and street cleaning employees transferred from Swindon Borough Council in November 2020. New virtual reality attraction opens in Swindon By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk Locals can now book virtual reality experience sessions at the newly-opened SAF-VR in Swindon. The experience house opened its doors to members of the public on Tuesday 2 November. SAF-VR have four booths that will be available to book, each

with a different decor theme, including their infamous 'zombie booth.' Owner Scott Francis said: "In terms of what is in store for those who visit the shop, we have many different games and experiences suitable for all ages and interests. Whether you're looking to beat the high score on a game, or hoping to travel the world with Google Earth, SAF-VR will have something for you!" SAF-VR will be offering over 30 different games and experiences for Swindon's public to try. Members of the public can book as many booths as they wish, with SAFVR recommending three people in each booth, or a family of four. The booths can be booked for a minimum of one hour, and games
can continue for as long as the player wishes. Alternatively, people will have the option to rent out SAF-VR for a two-hour period which will gain them access to four headsets. With this renting option, the shop will be closed to all other members of the public. This latter package will also allow customers to bring their own refreshments into the SAF-VR. The Politics Page Tackling climate change is something we can all work towards Swindon Council Leader David Renard's monthly column Planning for Swindon’s future growth is probably not top of people’s list when they think about what services their council is there to provide. I know from the many conversations I have with local residents that potholes, refuse collections and, more recently, roadworks tend to cause them the most angst. But we always have to keep an eye on the future and many Swindon Link readers will have seen the rapid expansion of our town over the last few decades. The growth in our population, coupled with housing targets set by the Government, mean we must ensure we control development so that it occurs in the right places. In order to make this happen we need to have a robust and up to date Local Plan as this
allows the council to set out how and where development should take place in the borough over the next 15 years. Cabinet colleagues and I will meet to consider the latest version of the draft Local Plan at our meeting on 1 December and, if it is approved, it will go before all councillors before being submitted to the Secretary of State early next year. The latest version takes into account a recent 10-week consultation where we received representations from about 700 residents, organisations and others with an interest in the draft Local Plan. It is so important local people have their say on where they feel housing and employment land should be sited and I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to give us their views. In order that we meet the assessed housing need in
Swindon and a five-year housing land supply, an additional 21,600 homes are required in the borough up to 2036. We are fortunate that we already have large housing sites at the New Eastern Villages, Wichelstowe and Kingsdown which will deliver many of these new homes, but the draft Local Plan identified a number of smaller sites in which to put an extra 2,200 homes. We will also consider the results of a consultation on the draft Local Transport Plan that sets out the council’s forwardlooking policies and strategy for investment in transport infrastructure. This goes hand in hand with the draft Local Plan as it is important we plan for improvements to the surrounding road network if we know a particular area has been earmarked for housing.
This is why we managed to secure tens of millions of pounds to improve key junctions near the New Eastern Villages and at Wichelstowe. On the subject of planning for the future, it was great to see Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundations Trust launch its Way Forward Programme recently. Interview - Buster Bloodvessel from Bad Manners talks December tour By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk When listening to any Bad Manners track, you cannot help but want to get up and dance. Ska is infectious and rousing. Why do you think the genre, and your music speaks to people, and continues to amass a large following? “Yeah, you've pretty much summed it up there. It is getup-and-go dance music and people love that about it. The fact that not many other people can do ska music the way we do it, I think has been the reason behind our longevity. I think we’re quite unique in that respect. I don’t know any other bands that have quite the power that we do when it comes to a live gig. We always do well live and of course, that too gives us our longevity. I can see us going for another ten years at least. Younger people really get into it and I really appreciate it.” Do you think a lot is owed to your on-stage performance and how your band choose to go about playing the tracks, and whipping the crowd up? “Of course, definitely. It’s something I have worked at for years – to give that good performance with the great songs that are behind me, followed by the good musicianship of the band. I mean I’m a very lucky boy so I can’t really do wrong when I’m on stage. I see it as my job to get the crowd going and to make them feel like they’re having the time of their lives – which I think I do do.” So you are about to embark on a big December tour, just

in time for the festive season. Are you happy to be back on the road performing after lockdown? “Well I think because last year was such a disastrous year, it’s nice to get back to doing our Christmas tour. We always usually do one and I almost feel like we’re part of Christmas itself. I haven’t really had time off gigging since I was 16. I enjoyed my time away but at the same time I was already thinking ahead of the next year and how we would put on a big nationwide tour to make up for it. It is 23 dates long, and there are still more gigs coming in the pipeline now! The schedule is going to take it’s toll on us but we can't wait. We are also hoping to get a special Christmas stage setup – we have some ideas and something silly in mind for the show. We have around 30 members that make up Bad Manners, so some of them won’t make it all the way through the tour but that’s just what happens. Having a large number like that allows for occasions where some people might not be able to play. If someone gets ill or if they’ve had too much to drink or are physically exerted, then we know we still have others ready and waiting! I'm the only original member in the band and I'm like the head of this outfit – I’m like the Father Christmas! The other original members and I are still part of this Bad Manners family we have going on. They still come round to see us or

come to the gigs. It just means a lot of Christmas presents – I think my Christmas present list would shock anyone!” Now that you are back to gigging and have time to reflect, how was lockdown for you as a performer? What was that experience like? “It was horrible. I was banging my head against a wall. It drove me mad. I’m someone who can’t sit still, not even for one day you know? I pushed myself into opening a bar. It was a bar in Bulgaria, which was quite fun. I stayed there the whole time. I got my vaccinations done over there too – it’s where I live at the moment. I'm back in London at the moment, but I've got a home there. The period that we’ve already played after coming out of lockdown has received an unbelievable response from people. They’re so desperate to dance and have a good time and I am so desperate to perform for them.” Are you a Christmassy person? How do you normally celebrate?

“The band usually always have Christmas day off – we’ve played gigs in the past on 25 December but the majority of the time we will have time off. This year we have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off but already somebody has asked me to do something special for their pub and I’ve sort of agreed on it. This is probably because I’m a workaholic and I just love to make people happy. I don’t like to disappoint people. When I'm not gigging though, I like to go and celebrate with my daughters. "I now have a granddaughter and I’m looking forward to spending time with her this Christmas. She’s four now and her birthday was on Halloween. It will be nice to see her." A Swindon literary great has been identified as the first to use 'wild life' in writings about nature. The discovery prompted the creation of a new fullyillustrated book about Victorian nature writer Richard Jefferies, which has been given a huge boost by the addition of a foreword written especially for it by gardener Monty Don. Jefferies, who lived from 1887 to 1948, was a pioneering nature writer as well as having been credited with producing one of the world's first apocalyptic alternative history novels, After London. His childhood home at Coate is now his museum, and its vandalistic. The move comes as new research shows that a quarter of older people would like to make a new pool of friends but have no idea where to start. A survey of 1,000 people aged 65 and over revealed 30 per cent thought they had lost the art of small talk as they got older. Almost half - 45 per cent - didn't feel they spent enough time socialising. Overall, a third of older people admitted they had experienced loneliness – a feeling which can cause the
decline of both physical and mental health. Swindon gears up for Christmas
Jack and the Beanstalk at the Wyvern Theatre Dance star Louie Spence will join established West-End performer Millie O'Connell for the Wyvern Theatre's production of Jack and the Beanstalk. Louie will take on the role of The Spirit of the Beans, and O'Connell will be playing the Queen. The pantomime will run from 4 December to 2 January. There will be a relaxed performance, sign language interpreted performance and an audio-described performance also available for booking. A spokesperson for the event said: "Follow Jack and climb a beanstalk of gigantic proportions to cloudland in this GIANT pantomime adventure. The Ugly Duckling is this year's Christmas show from Swindon's Shoebox Theatre. The show will run from 18 to 24 December and has been created for younger children aged two and over, and their families. A spokesperson for the show prefaces the performance: "Dotty the Duckling was not like her brothers and sisters. Since the day she hatched from her enormous egg she always knew she was a little different from all the other ducklings! Wanting to learn more about the world outside her pond and find out who she really is, she packs her bag and sets off on an epic adventure of discovery." [REVIEW] Swindon Miller & Carter Steakhouse
By Jessica Durston The Swindon Link team's hunger was slain at the Miller & Carter Steakhouse on Drove Road. When entering the restaurant, you are greeted by the luxurious and classic colour scheme of black, chrome and burgundy wine. The deep red throws up associations of the good red selection on offer, as well as the red meat they specialise in. A spacious opposing boothstyle table was booked ahead of time, in anticipation of our lunch meeting. The gentle, overhead, mood lighting was perfectly set so we did not feel like we were under interrogation. Miller & Carter pride themselves upon their steak, and for good reason. The company were awarded 'Masters of Steak' from the Craft Guild of Chefs for its prime 30 day aged steak cuts. We opted for the Fixed Price

Lunch Menu. One course is £9.50, two £12.50 and three courses, £15.50. The menu is available Monday to Saturday from noon to 3pm. I chose the Roasted Fennel, Quinoa and Piquillo Pepper Burger, served with sour cream, cucumber ribbons, lettuce, tomato and seasoned fries. The quinoa gave the patty a soft, melt-in-the-mouth consistency which worked beautifully against the crisp lettuce and cucumber. The use of fennel and piquillo pepper helped to elevate the dish to something much more than the throwaway veggie burger that often appears as an afterthought on a lot of restaurant menus. It is commonly known that you eat with your eyes first when a dish is placed in front of you and the rustic appearance of the food was aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Buttermilk Chicken Schnitzel
Another firm favourite was the Buttermilk Chicken Schnitzel. The crispy golden chicken was served with diced tomato, chunky avocado and a buttermilk ranch dressing. The marriage of the side salad with the unashamedly herbbutter-drenched chicken was exactly the ticket and the pea shoots scattered on top were a welcome touch. Our waiting staff were attentive, and our food and drinks arrived quickly and
efficiently. Miller & Carter provided the perfect relaxed yet sophisticated backdrop for our team meeting. Listening to the COP26 discussions in Glasgow you’d be forgiven for thinking that zero emission vehicles are the wonder pill to meet all our climate goals and solve all our problems. Whilst electric vehicles play a part in the solution they are certainly not the answer alone. E-vehicles still emit dangerous emissions from brake and tyre wear, and their production is far from climate-neutral. Our streets will be no less congested, safe or equitable if we replace all our existing cars with electric ones. We must invest in walking, cycling and public transport. We must make it easier,

This season it'll see Swindon tackle three games in the space of a week. A hectic schedule of festive fun can see teams fall down the standings or establish day light at the top of the table. With the tight turnaround of fixtures, a strong squad can give you a massive edge at this time of year. If you have the luxury of being able to rotate the starting eleven that extra bit of freshness can provide the advantage in games where fitness levels can be low. Despite having just seven players at the beginning of pre-season the Swindon squad looks strong.

The green choice needs to be the easy choice – not a middleclass lifestyle option. At the moment the more sustainable choice is not always the easiest choice, and the barriers make people travel in other ways. However, we all can play a small part by re-evaluating our journeys, getting out of the habit of immediately jumping

And with Mathieu Baudry and Romoney Crichlow both picking up knocks along with the injuryprone skipper Dion Conroy, Swindon could find themselves with a patched-up defence in some matches. Despite this, Town have an abundance of midfielders and wingers in the squad which will provide energy over Christmas. I remember saying at the start of the season that it'll be a case of making it through to the January transfer window and then getting players in for the season. However this Swindon team has surpassed all expectations and now it's more the case of seeing whether there are one or two quality signings to add to the squad. I feel as if all we require is a
centre back to cover in the event of an injury, a natural left back and a striker to push Tyreece Simpson. The signing of experienced EFL goal getter Paul Benson in January 2012 transferred a very good Swindon side into a title winning team. If the Robins were to find a player of that calibre then I believe they will have the nucleus of a promotion winning team. Although I believe another striker is required, the current number 9 Tyreece Simpson is having a fine season in what is his first full campaign as a professional footballer. The 19-year-old has taken some unfair criticism at times this season for not being the most clinical of players. However it's easy to forget that the Ipswich
