Call for Swindon to provide aid for refugees The people of Swindon are being called upon to ‘do their bit’ to help the thousands of refugees that have fled their homes to escape war, poverty and oppression. A new group called SwindonCalais Solidarity is looking for donations of urgent supplies from tents to soap to take over to Calais to give to the thousands of stranded refugees. They’re also seeking donations up to £500 to fund ferry tickets and fuel. Their trip to Calais takes place on 24 October. At the same time people are being asked to support charities like Medicins Sans Frontieres, Unicef and Save The Children who are directly helping refugees. On 16 September staff and contacts at West Swindon based Excalibur Communications took part in a sponsored 500 mile workout in the company gym to raise muchneeded funds for refugee support work by Save The Children in camps located in Lebanon, Turkey and Syria, helping people displaced by four years of war. The target was exceeded by

160 miles during the day of exercise, with 43 employees, friends and associates raising nearly £1,500. Domino’s donated pizzas to sustain those taking part. Excalibur CEO James Phipps said: “We wanted to somehow help the massive humanitarian crisis on our doorstep. Shirley Ludford, aiming to keep Swindon 105.5 on the air Swindon businesses are being urged to take on the challenge of helping the town’s award winning community radio station stay on air in the new year. With their landlords planning to revamp the building currently occupied by Swindon105.5 radio, this is seen as a chance to engage further with both local business and communities, whilst establishing a long-term, sustainable, base for its studios. Station chairman Nick Stevenson said: “This situation means we are searching for a new home for Swindon 105.5 in order to continue to provide an accessible and inclusive as well as totally local radio service to the town. “We have until the end of the year to move out of the Bentley Centre, and need to have alternative premises in place as soon as possible, as well as funding or help in kind to be able to do so. Please make contact with suggestions of suitable premises.”

Swindon 105.5 is broadcasts 24/7 and is run by volunteers aged 12 to 73. It gained the Queens Award (MBE) last year and station manager Shirley Ludford also received the High Sheriff’s Award for her service to the community. “This is a ‘Challenge Anneka’ type situation,” said Shirley. “There are many ways individuals and companies can get involved, but identifying premises is the first priority, followed by rebuilding our studios so there is no break in service. “The station trains and supports people of all ages and abilities and from all walks of life. West Swindon dentist returns to Ukraine with third mobile clinic

Another refurbished dental caravan has been delivered to Ukraine as Brendon Ball from Freshbrook Dental Practice and his wife Natasha renew their efforts to improve levels of dental care in the Cherkassy region of the country. Brendon made his first trip with medical supplies in 1999 after Swindon Link introduced him to the charity Dentaid. He discovered treatment was given without pain killers and found almost no dental health advice. But now, after many visits to supply materials and provide training to local dentists, he says the difference is huge. “Our contact with senior dental staff and government people has eased access to the country and we are now highly regarded in the Cherkassy region. With greater contact and with the influence of Europe there has also been a major shift towards better dental health education rather than drilling, filling or extraction. They also have anaesthetics for their patients. “The two dental trailers are used across the region which is the size of Wales. They get towed out to serve remote villages but they can only be used from April to October because the severe winter weather destroys the roads.

Farewell to an old soldier

We’re sorry to report that 95 year old Jim Trew, whose story we told in the September Link, passed away at Great Western Hospital on Sunday 13 September. Jim is pictured above holding the Legion d’Honneur he received from the French government for his role in the liberation of France in 1944. He landed in Normandy with the Kensington regiment and was involved with the liberation of Holland. There he met his future wife Henny when billeted in Nijmegan. Brendon and Natasha Ball with Herber Trinder who joined them on the trip to deliver the dental clinic which set off on 8 September “Our third unit is a self contained vehicle which we delivered in 2005 and is robust enough to handle the bad weather. “However things are sliding backwards. The war against Russia means the resources of a poor country are being sucked into preventing an invasion by their much bigger aggressor. It barely makes the news but there is a major assault going on.” After the first trip Brendon set up a charity - Smile Menders - and married his translator Natasha. At the end of September they celebrate 15 years of marriage. Although Cherkassy is in the west of Ukraine, away from the conflict zone, Natasha said the tension affects the whole of the country. “Brendon was in fact given the third mobile clinic in 2008, but there hasn’t been enough money to convert it and buy a towing vehicle “At the beginning of this year I was getting really upset about the war because my mother still lives in Ukraine, though she’s away from the war zone. We decided we had to do something and we’ve had lots of help to get the caravan ready. “The people of Great Somerford where we live ran a number of fundraising events and businesses have also helped. Dr Ivan Kovolenko, our friend who is

A town of ongoing visions stretching back in time Swindon Council’s latest vision for the town’s future is nothing new. Surprising Swindon for sale Swindon Civic Voice has published an updated version of its highly regarded ‘Surprising Swindon’ guide, a treasure trove of information for residents as well as visitors to the town. It focuses on the area of the town centre at the base of Swindon hill, which grew from the first cottages built by GWR, spreading upwards to eventually join the ancient but tiny ‘Old Swindon’ in 1900. A particular feature of Surprising Swindon is the maps comparing 1888 and 2015, highlighting

heritage buildings. It also offers an opportunity to explore the Railway Village, with a close-up layout. The original uses of many premises are detailed, and mention is made of the initiatives by railwaymen to establish the facilities which a densely-packed new town needed: healthcare, recreation and education, and inspiration. Housing next to Lydiard Park would open floodgates There was united opposition to housing on the edge of Lydiard Park at a public meeting attended by residents of Swindon and North Wiltshire, with MPs Robert Buckland for South Swindon and James Gray for North Wiltshire on 2 September. A planning application by Taylor Wimpey for 50 houses off Tewkesbury Way close to the park is expected shortly, following two public consultation presentations. But the MPs, Swindon and Wiltshire councillors and representatives from Lydiard Millicent Parish Council, Shaw Residents’ Association and Friends of Lydiard Park are unanimous that such development would break through Swindon’s urban envelope onto land that has never been considered for development, intrude upon the park, and could lead to multiple planning applications to the west and north west of the town. James Gray MP said government policy created since 2010 is based on giving communities responsibility for how their areas are planned. “We are facing unreasonable development which will ruin a piece of countryside which is a heritage asset. Council makes Thamesdown Drive extension a priority Swindon Borough Council has put the extension of Thamesdown Drive to Great Western Way at the centre of its plans for the town’s future. The council which revealed the vision for the town up to 2030 in early September has made the extension one of its priorities. This comes after a campaign organised by TDeX, the Thamesdown Drive Extension Campaign group, to see the link road built. Independent assessors have been appointed by the council to look into the plans over the next few weeks before a discussion by the scrutiny panel in October. The council will then seek the backing of the Swindon & Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership in November before the proposal is submitted to central government for major financial investment. Coffee tasting to get involved in Rwanda cow project

Monika Nowak, the Starbucks Coffee Master at DeVere Village featured in the September Link, is organising a fundraising coffee tasting evening on Sunday 25 October, 5pm to 7.30pm. The aim is get supporters behind her project to raise £1,000 to purchase a cow for a family in Rwanda. Monika will show a movie made on her visit to the country in May on a Starbucks organised trip to meet coffee growers. She will talk about how a cow represents a major health and economic asset to a family, and provides fertiliser for coffee bushes. She will also be asking for donations on the evening. Quoting Dr Loretta Scott, Monika says: ‘We can’t help everyone, but… everyone can help someone.’

Black cat flies over Haydon Wick

Haydonleigh Primary School welcomed back its first headteacher on 4 September to celebrate its twentieth year by raising a new flag. When the single form entry primary opened in a temporary classroom in September 1995, there were just 23 children. Now it’s a three form entry school catering for 530 children. Former headteacher Jon Swaffield said the school moved into the completed building in November 1995. “Whenever we visited the construction site there was always a black cat, so when the governors were looking for a logo, somebody suggested it be the cat. He or she continued to appear after we moved in; it was a good omen because, for me, Haydonleigh is a lovely place and has always been the happiest school in Swindon.” Joining him in pulling the flag up the pole were two staff members who were there on opening day, reception teacher Helen Steward (née Smith) and teaching assistant Carol Chambers (née Gorton) who joined as an MDSA.

Isambard staff ready to react to sudden cardiac arrest National cardiac charity SADS UK has donated a portable automated external defibrillator to Isambard Community School, the first device to be donated to a Swindon school under the charity’s Big Shock campaign, and provided training to staff. Mum of two Sonia Dykes raised the funds for the LifePak which has been mounted in the school reception and is available to be used if a cardiac arrest takes place in school or in the neighbourhood. She became a volunteer for SADS

UK after her 21 month old son had a sudden cardiac arrest in 2003 and her daughter had one in 2013, aged just 23 months. She said: “Thankfully paramedics arrived quickly and both children are OK, but I wanted to do something to ensure others received quick help.” Anne Jolly, founder of SADS UK, said: “Early defibrillation is vital and more and more schools have a defibrillator to restart the heart if there is a cardiac arrest on the premises.“ Gemma Manterfield, a member of Isambard’s pupil support team and

Skatepark a great summer success

The West Swindon councillor who first proposed a skatepark for West Swindon has hailed it as a great success. Nick Martin, who was approached by young skate boarders in 2011 about a facility in the area, said he was delighted to see the skatepark which opened off Rivermead Drive in July in regular use during good weather. His initial proposal that it be located in Middleleaze was met by strong opposition which forced a year’s delay in the £65,000 project. “Despite concerns about the present location, it’s a great success,” said Nick. “I was really chuffed to see the skatepark so well used during the summer holidays; it’s really great to see youngsters having a good time.”

Mum Paula Jackson said she was a regular visitor with her children Katy, 8, and Joe, 13. “It’s fantastic to have something free on our doorstep. We drove from Shaw the first time then saw the map of walking routes in the Link magazine and realised how close it is to get to the park safely. “We come down whenever it’s sunny. It’s good that the park is away from housing and not causing people noise aggravation. Spending a penny will help build a toilet in Burundi The Bishop of Swindon Rev Lee Rayfield has said ​blessing the new toilet at St Andrew, North Swindon was a first for him in 10 years in the role. Over 100 people attended a service ​on Sunday 6 September where he welcomed the new facility and praised the twinning link. The 12th Century church which was rebuilt in 1868 has never had a toilet. Because of its position on St Andrew’s Ridge, connecting it to the mains would have been prohibitively expensive.

The Venerable Caroline Baston, Priest in Charge at St Andrew, said: “We found a great solution by installing a waterless composting toilet which has cost a fraction of building one within the church. “We didn’t have space anyway as we are at capacity most weeks with over 100 children and some 60 families on our books. With 70 Baptisms a year as well as regular weddings, we really needed to provide the congregation and visitors with hygienic facilities. “It’s environmentally good news,

and by joining the Tearfund toilet twinning scheme, we are committed to raising money to support a toilet block in a school in Burundi. “We encourage everyone to prayerfully consider supporting Toilet Twinning; Bishop Lee has taken up the

Krishna and his family await aid in the ruined village of Kodari Two Swindon charity workers will next month take out a highly-skilled team of volunteers to Nepal to help with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. Rosa and Ian Matheson from Highworth have raised funds for the past five years for the Angel Orphanage in Kathmandu, but ever since the April earthquake they have also been calling for volunteers and donations to help where it really matters. The couple and a team of volunteers will be heading out to Nepal on 3 November for a month long trip to take supplies to Angel’s Orphanage and also Kodari. This is a quake-hit village the Mathesons have got to know well during their visits after being invited by hotel waiter Krishna to meet his family. The team had planned to go out earlier in the year but were delayed by the late arrival of the monsoon season. The last few months have been

very hard for families trying to survive with no real shelter, no running water whilst fighting the risks of disease and landslides caused by the earthquake’s structural damage. Rosa said: “Our team is made up of several people including Rebecca, an earth building expert, Lawrence, a carpenter and Sam, a mechanic. We all bring different expertise to the table. “We’re hoping to make a real difference in helping the rebuild when we get out there. Ian has been learning how to weld so that he can pass that on to the villagers for them to be able to build more iron-based shelters. “People in Swindon have been so generous but there’s still money needed for both the orphanage and the earthquake victims. Festival opens on National Poetry Day From 1 to 5 October, Poetry Swindon Festival travels by rail and canal, dances around nine chalk white horses, looks for lost verse with the Itinerant Poetry Library, and delves into the world of Minecraft poetry at the Museum of Computing. Some of the best poets in Britain and beyond will be here: AngloAmerican Robert Vas Dias, the inaugural canal poet laureate Jo Bell, Forward prize-winner Kei Miller, pop culture-inspired Andy Jackson, poetry art-specialist Pacale Petit and many more. “Relaxed events - the pleasure of

food, the pleasure of poetry - we are creating a lovely vibe,” said joint organiser Hilda Sheehan who said there are a limited number of souvenir programmes available which include verse donated by this year's participants. "I asked poets to give their most enjoyable poem for someone who doesn’t read poetry, to introduce these poets - it’s another way of connecting with new people.” There may be a few of these available at Swindon Central Library and selected spots - nab one if you are fortunate enough to spot one.

The 2015 festival takes place in a variety of venues: Richard Jefferies Museum, Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, Museum of Computing, Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal, Cricklade Railway and Artsite. Arts Council England and Swindon Artswords have provided funding and support. The festival launches at Central Library on Thursday 1 October, 10am. All are welcome to bring a favourite poem, or a poem they have written to share with a supportive audience. There will be free tickets available to other events as well. The toughest cameraman in the world to talk about Life behind the Lens Grabbed by a walrus …pawed by a polar bear …caressed by a whale … these are just three of the many experiences enjoyed by Doug Allan, who has been described by Sir David Attenborough as ‘the toughest in the business.’ His work has been on The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Life, Human Planet and Frozen Planet. Multiaward winning Doug was seen by a few when he visited Swindon SubAqua Club in 2014. On 3 November at Swindon Arts Centre, there’s another chance to hear one of the world’s most respected and experienced wildlife and natural history cameramen talk about filming in hostile environments, illustrated by incredible images. He’s a captivating speaker who will give jaw dropping insight into his work whilst talking with deep concern from 25 years of close observation about climate change which has resulted in declining populations of polar bears and other sea mammals due to diminishing winter sea ice. the last chance saloon. To ignore climate change and pretend it will go away is to walk blindly but knowingly over a cliff. Diving in some of the most remote and least visited places in the world he has been filming scientists charting the decline of our precious coral reefs in ultra high resolution photography to measure the its cover and health. The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust

Old Town jewellers Deacons have created a classic limited edition pocket watch to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Illustrated with the RAF wings and the Spitfire V, the timepiece was launched on 6 September in the run up to Swindon Remembers, the commemoration of the pilots who took to the air to defend the country in 1940. On display at Deacons for the unveiling were pictures and replica medals awarded to Swindon pilots Harold Starr and his brother Norman who were shot down and died in

1940 and 1945 respectively. For Richard Deacon there is a family connection with the Spitfire. “We’re known for limited edition watches related to the railways, but my grandfather worked at the Swindon Vickers factory on the timing mechanisms required by the Spitfire. “Creating the watch to remember events of seventy years ago has a lot of poignancy for me. I’m also pleased we’ve been able to work with Swindon Heritage to honour the pilots who flew the iconic aircraft.”

The evocative growl of Rolls Royce Merlin engines powering six vintage Spitfires and Hurricanes from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on 15 September poignantly and gracefully ended a week of events in Swindon leading up to Battle of Britain Day when the Duke of Gloucester visited Radnor Street Cemetery to commemorate the 544 pilots who died defending the country 75 years ago. The event organised by Swindon Heritage, Paul Gentleman and Caroline Black, paid particular tribute to Swindon born Squadron Leader Harold Starr who is buried in Radnor Street Cemetery, killed in his parachute above Kent on 31 August 1940 after baling out of his stricken

Hurricane. His brother pilot Norman, killed in 1945, is also honoured on the Commonwealth grave stone. The cemetery chapel now displays historical information about those who served in both world wars, as well as the people of Swindon involved on the home front. During the week Swindon Heritage organised talks related to Swindon and the Battle of Britain and a display of a static replica Spitfire and Hurricane in the town centre and at the North Swindon Centre. Celebrating the Swindon woman who became a feminist leader Following the hugely successful commemorations for Harold Starr and the Battle of Britain, the team at Swindon Heritage is celebrating the life of another forgotten hero from the town. From 1906 to 1911 Swindon born schoolteacher Edith New was at the forefront of the fight for female enfranchisement. A paid organiser working for the Women’s Social and Political Union, she was one of the advance guard of women who fought the Votes for Women campaign at every by-election in every town and city during the years up to 1914. Swindon Heritage will commemorate Edith New with walks, talks and events as a new film called Suffragette starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep is due for release in October. The programme of events: Thursday 8 October, 7.15pm - illustrated talk at Swindon Central Library called Swindon’s Suffragette Edith New: From North Street to Holloway Gaol. Jane, centre with Link #400, and ADHD Foundations staff and users Former headteacher of St Lukes School Jane Cordes, joined a team of staff from the ADHD Foundation who trekked the Great Wall of China in early September to raise much needed funds to support work to improve the quality of life of those with neuro-disabilities and mental health issues including ADHD. She said: “It was an awesome experience; Google Images just doesn’t prepare you for how steep it is. Coupled with 32 degree humid heat made it a tough experience. The views were amazing and you feel on top of the world. “The ADHD team are a great group of people giving so much fun, support and encouragement along the way. We took three of our young people; they grew in resilience and character as a result of an experience of a lifetime.” Jane, who lives in North Swindon is now an education consultant providing training and support to schools and teachers throughout the UK. She said: “Fundraising is essential to provide the extensive range of services to improve the positive life chances of young people, their families and the schools which they attend.

“Too many young people are written off at an early age because they can’t cope in the structured education system but we have to see beyond that and help them realise their potential. “ADHD can be a positive trait in the working world and lead to success and creative achievement. This is certainly true for Richard Branson, Bill Gates and Walt Disney. “Our role is to provide young people with the foundations and strategies to ensure that they can access equal economic and social opportunities. Too many with mental health needs have little or no support; the foundation is at the forefront in trying to address this.” Based in Liverpool the charity offers intervention to young people and families as well as training programmes to schools and youth organisations throughout the UK. October sports training & development day places on offer Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) are launching their Sports Training & Development Day on Friday 23 October at St John’s School, Marlborough. The day, supported by Rhino, is aimed at any coach, teacher, volunteer, club member or student involved in teaching or coaching sport or activity at any level. The development of new skills, sharing of ideas, techniques and practical solutions are key in order to develop and deliver high quality sessions to support the improvement of athletes and players at all levels. WASP chief executive Steve Boocock said “We are committed to supporting all those who are delivering sport in clubs, schools and the community. With an increased number of coaches working in our schools we want to ensure they are providing the best quality sporting experience for young people. We

Boxer aims to achieve top 10 world ranking in October Kelly Morgan from Oakhurst has dreamt of becoming a professional boxer since she was five years old, after watching her father box in the British Army. Having served with the Army in Iraq and Afghanistan, won a Commonwealth bronze medal in the javelin and played netball for England, Kelly has set herself the target of becoming world middleweight and super middleweight champion. The 35 year old is one of only four professional female boxers in the UK. She made her ring debut fight in Bath on 18 July this year. Geoff Maxted of Drivewrite.co.uk takes the latest VW Golf GTi for a spin Incredibly, 2016 will usher in the 40th birthday of this iconic fast German motor. Now in its seventh iteration it has matured like a fine wine to the extent that it now transcends the ubiquitous term ‘hot hatch’, demonstrating that a car can evolve into a vehicle suitable for grown-ups without losing the fun factor that made it so popular all those decades ago. The model tested here is perhaps the most similar to the original in that it has just three doors and a great manual gearbox with the regulation six ratios. Those with growing families yet retaining an

urge to relish an adrenaline fuelled driving experience will be happy to learn that the VW Golf GTi is also available with five doors and, if you must, the flappy paddle DSG auto. If it seems like this review is turning into a glorifying eulogy you wouldn’t be wrong. It really is this good. The fact is, the GTi is a very complete car. No longer the fastest or loudest in its class it has instead become a pure drivers’ car that can also handle the day-to-day chores with aplomb. The standing start sprint to 62mph is a modest 6.5 seconds but that’s not what this car is about. Instead, with 217bhp and

a reasonable torque figure of 258lb/ ft it will demolish a twisting, turning road with breathtaking ease. It all happens in total security thanks to an array of safety and driver aids plus, in the case of the test car, Volkswagen’s Dynamic Chassis Control with variable suspension settings to suit – Sport, Normal and Comfort. For a three door car access to the back seats is straightforward as the figure-hugging front seats slide and tilt with ease. Once in the back, passengers declared that they were really snug. If the back seats are to be used often then maybe the five door would be the better buy. Isofix is standard for the ankle-biters. Safety is handled by the technology known only by acronyms – ABS, HBA, ASR and ESP to name but four that go about their business quietly and efficiently, keeping the car on the tarmac. Some manufacturers shout about their high tech gadgets but this VW is more restrained. For example, if the car is judged to be too close to the vehicle in front a discreet warning appears in the dash. There are emergency braking systems, adaptive cruise control and

a host of others too numerous to mention here, some of which will be found on the comprehensive options list. Our car was fitted with the Discover Navigation Pro touchscreen navigation/DVD system with voice activation. There’s an absolutely brilliant 8” screen with many handy gadgets; the whole option adds a healthy £1,765 to the bill but is worth it, as are others - like the DCC mentioned earlier. If the GTi is too rich at around £27,000 then there are other, tamer versions of the Golf of the same quality build standard. If you are of the green persuasion then this reviewer can attest to the fact that Golf GTE hybrid is outstanding but if it is expensive, as is the e-Golf, even with the government grant. Those lusting after more power are catered for too as VW, to celebrate the 40th anniversary, are offering the Clubsport special edition with a boost function, improved aerodynamics and a heritage design package. Potent. If you leave this page with the idea that I really recommend this great all-rounder then you would be entirely correct.

With its standout design, the Swift SZ3 is hard to miss. Its light, agile chassis works with responsive steering for handling that’s nothing but fun. With top-class safety, low running costs and head turning curves, you really must see one.

A life-changing trip helping children in Kenya

Student volunteers from New College playing games with children in Nakuru Places are still available for students to go out to Kenya on life-changing trips in 2016 to help disadvantaged children. In July over 30 students and staff from New College volunteered in Kenya with Younite Outreach Project, a Swindon based organisation, which runs trips for people to help support two schools for orphans and disadvantaged children in Nakuru, Kenya. The difference they make is life changing for themselves as well as the children they are helping. New College student Elizabeth Lawton said: “Kenya was the most incredible thing I have ever done. I

loved that when we were there we could see the difference that we were making. “The children were fascinated by what we take for granted. I’ve been in challenging environments before but never have I learnt as much as I did on this trip. My confidence grew and my self-awareness grew. I can’t wait to get back out there.” Younite is currently recruiting volunteers for trips in 2016 with spaces available to travel in February, April and next summer. Despite its stunning landscape, culture and wildlife Kenya remains a country stricken with HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty.

Younite works closely with schools and education programme. Nakuru is the provincial capital of the Rift Valley province, with roughly 300,000 inhabitants. It is currently the fourth largest city in Kenya. Organiser Fiona Simpson said: “Although we primarily take groups of volunteers from schools or colleges to Africa we can also facilitate individuals looking to volunteer. “Volunteering is one of the most rewarding and life changing things you can do.” As a group member you will be involved in a range of activities. Your day will mainly consist of

teaching, small scale renovating work, assisting with a feeding programme, sports and social activities. Former New College student Natan James, who volunteered last summer, said: “When you learn and understand what these children go through daily, everything that happens in their lives that you don’t bear witness to, it can be heartwrenching. “Because of this, whatever we do, no matter how insignificant it may seem to others, truly helps the children lead a better life. When I return from Kenya knowing that I’ve helped one child a little or a hundred children a lot, I sleep comfortably at night in the knowledge that I’ve done my best to improve the lives of those who have less. It is truly an indescribable feeling. If I was prime minister, these trips would be compulsory for everyone, but for now all I can do is recommend it to absolutely anyone. Visit West Swindon’s unique woodland on National Coppice Day The inaugural national coppice day takes place on Saturday 17 October, 2pm to 4pm, to celebrate the traditional woodland management practice, and volunteers involved with Peatmoor Community Woodland are inviting Swindon people to visit the copse to the west of Peatmoor Lagoon. It is a fragment of the ancient Bradon Forest which covered North Wiltshire in medieval times. The aim is to raise awareness of coppicing and its importance to wildlife and habitat, and encourage more people to enjoy the practical, sustainable conservation activity in this Swindon secret within suburbia. The group has been managing Peatmoor Copse for over 25 years, cutting down trees so that they

regenerate in a managed way. The volunteers also maintain walkways and streams, as well as planting new trees and wildflowers. It will be the start of the winter annual cutting cycle and group members will be giving tours of the copse and encouraging visitors to have a go at coppicing. Wear old clothes, strong shoes and bring gloves and wet weather gear. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. The site is not wheelchair accessible and there are no toilets. People willing to provide full-time care and training for a puppy in the early stages of becoming a guide dog are needed. Puppy walking is a crucial volunteering role which prepares young dogs for their working life by familiarising them with every environment which a blind person might encounter, such as walking in towns and country, visiting public places, taking public transport. Puppies come to the home from

seven weeks of age until they are 12 to 14 months old. There are training procedures that need to be followed and volunteers meet regularly with a Guide Dog supervisor where they talk about the puppy’s progress. After completing their time with their walkers, puppies move on to a training school where they begin their formal guide dog training. The Swindon Food and Drink Festival in Lydiard Park in June marked a special point in the healing journey of Vijaya Manchem from Oakhurst. When her four year old was born, Vijaya was severely debilitated by arthritis and felt utterly miserable. The help from traditional treatment routes seemed to make things worse. Internet research revealed that many degenerative diseases had been redressed by changing to an alkaline diet. This means avoiding many of the normal foods taken for granted – no dairy, sugar, gluten,

animal proteins, alcohol, or caffeine. For Vijaya it was time to learn to use foods new to her – seed staples such as quinoa, amaranth, millet, chia and buckwheat – to create meals with sustaining enjoyment. From this was born Simply Nutrilicious, which aims to assist people to feel better through diet. Although her problems receded, a lack of delicious and sweet-flavours was disappointing. A friend suggested that Vijaya contact Mandy Parsons, who had also shaken off many problems with a change of diet, which at one point was totally raw and vegan. Together they learnt how to make mouthwatering savoury and sweet delicacies: cakes, truffles, granola bars, the baked delight of rhubarb and carrot muffins, coconut chia balls and gluten-free porridge. These were introduced at the food festival and proved a huge hit with both adults and children. Many of us have watched with horror and helplessness the daily images of children, pregnant mothers and distraught young men in flight across Europe. Fleeing from war, racial, religious and state persecution, their desperation is so great that they put their lives at risk, in overloaded unseaworthy boats, or in the hands of ruthless people smugglers. Our politicians argue amongst themselves as to what can be done and the press put out conflicting accounts of the immigration problem. One of the difficulties in trying to make sense of the national debate about this crisis - some say the greatest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II, is the common failure to distinguish between asylum seekers and economic migrants.

It is important to be clear that asylum seekers who have a legitimate right to be here whilst they await a decision about their case - are a very small proportion of the population of economic migrants-mostly from the EU who come in search of work. Another fallacy is that life is easy once asylum seekers reach our shores. They face a wait of months or even years while their claims are processed. They live on a very small allowance and have no access to education, work – or even a TV. Whist the arguments between politicians and in the media rage on, many of us are wondering desperately what can be done now to alleviate the suffering . Nowadays, those who helped wartime refugees to escape from Nazi Germany are regarded as

Think of Schindler of Schindlers’s List fame, or Nicholas Winton who organised the ‘kindertransport’ which brought large numbers of Jewish children to the UK before World War II broke out. We cannot all be Schindlers but there is great need for individual help in many forms. For instance, you can add your voice to those who are demanding that the UK - the sixth richest country in the world - and with a proud history of welcoming refugees, does more to help. As well as sending money to the major charities who are involved in this crisis – such as the Red Cross or Medecin Sans Frontieres, it is also possible to get involved on a local level. Swindon Harbour Project, housed in an old church hall near the town centre, provides a drop-in centre for asylum seekers and refugees. They come from many of the most war-torn parts of the world such as Eritrea, Sudan, Iran, Iraq, and most

recently from Syria. The Harbour offers advice support and friendship to all and is a vital source of support to many. You can help the work of The Harbour in a number of ways including regular donations of money through the website or of clothing and useful household items. Get in touch to find out about our fund raising activities, including a quiz and a curry night coming up soon. Most rewarding of all, you can step forward. Being a volunteer offers a chance to meet new people - and make a difference by offering a friendly face. Many volunteers contribute through a particular skill such as teaching sewing or English; others assist with form filling, or helping someone to find their way through our complex bureaucracies. Thought-provoking film The Divide at Swindon Arts Centre on 20 October The Divide, a film based on The Spirit Level, the critically-acclaimed, 2009 best-selling book by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, is showing on Tuesday 20 October at Swindon Arts Centre. In The Divide, seven characters battle to cope with the consequences of the growing difference between rich and poor on the planet.

Their stories are interwoven with archive footage charting the growing income gap, painting a lyrical picture of how economic division creates social division and personal anxiety.
