An eagerly awaited show by Happy’s Circus to start the term at Orchid Vale Primary School went dreadfully wrong on Thursday 4 September when excited families queuing to take their seats in the big top on the school field were told the performance had been cancelled. Shane Moore, 13 years an ice hockey player with Swindon Wildcats, has commented favourably about the changes at Swindon Link. Now aged 27, we’ve been writing stories about Shane since he was aged 14 when he first picked up sponsorship from the 24 Hour Gym and then when he went on to play for the Great Britain Under 18s. “You’ve been really supportive over the years,” he said. “It’s the one publication that I’ll pick up and have a good read through. “The Link has been freshened up and the new sports website is great. “It’s hard to pin down a single reason, but I’ve grown up with The Link. I like the very local news, it’s a nice format and an easy read for all things Swindon. It keeps me in touch with what’s going on. “I love Swindon, I don’t think I could leave it. Dave and Sarah Chilvers from Peatmoor returned in mid-September from a trip to Vietnam which included a visit to a rescue sanctuary for moonbears run by Animals Asia. They met Zebedee the moonbear who was rescued in 2012 from a bear farm where he was being ‘milked’ daily for bile which is believed to have health giving properties. The support group’s sponsorship has ensured Zebedee - named after the town’s magic roundabout - now enjoys a happy existence away from barbaric conditions trapped in a cage. Sarah said: “We had the most amazing 9 hours at the sanctuary seeing the work undertaken by vets and staff to care for rescued bears. Nobody has been able to

understand why a brand new housing area like Priory Vale was still 20 years behind in terms of broadband speed. My colleague councillors would like to thank the leader of the council David Renard for ensuring the funds were ringfenced to secure the government commitment.” Coun Elliott added that tenders to install the required infrastructure will take about six months and he hopes work can start within a year.

Mr Macpherson said: “Both myself and Wiltshire Police Chief Constable Pat Geenty are committed to involving communities in the prevention and reduction of crime and anti-social behaviour. “The service means we will be able to share information quickly and efficiently with our communities, including Neighbourhood Watch coordinators and members.” Wiltshire Police Chief Constable Pat Geenty believes community messaging could be a breakthrough. “The police have developed so many systems over the years, all of which required a lot of staff time inputting information, which was then wasted because other priorities took over. “The web based system allows us to

Duke in Swindon to present award

HRH the Duke of Kent will be visiting the town on 27 October to present an award on behalf of the Queen and to take in some dance. He’ll be visiting 105.5 community radio studios in Stratton to meet volunteers who run the station 24/7 and to present the prestigious Queen’s Award For Voluntary Service (MBE) . Station manager Shirley Ludford said: “We’re looking forward to receiving the award from His Royal Highness in person. This is an exciting recognition of our work and a credit to all the individuals who make up Swindon105.5.” The Duke will also unveil a plaque on a refurbished studio following a successful project with Drove School after Shirley worked with pupils aged 9 to became the country’s young-

In the afternoon HRH will be visiting Swindon Dance in the old town hall studios to watch a selection of ballet and contemporary classes, and a short performance by some of Swindon Dance’s youth dancers. DeVere general manager Andrew Spinks said the branch in the hotel is a licensed outlet working to Starbucks standards but has achieved a higher level of quality than any directly managed or licenced outlet in Britain. “It’s all down to the manager Monika Nowak who has encouraged, developed and coached her staff to strive for a high level of performance,” said Andrew. “They each had to research different kinds of coffee, the history of the brand, assemble a portfolio, take an exam and be interviewed by Starbucks representatives. “It was a rigorous process and I’m delighted four of Monika’s colleagues can now also wear the black apron. No other Starbucks in the UK has 5 coffee masters. It shows there is great knowledge, great service and great engagement with customers.”

Monika said she was delighted that five of the seven staff are now Coffee Masters. “My colleagues worked very hard to learn everything they could about coffee and the Starbucks brand. “We are all passionate about coffee and our knowledge gives customers confidence that they will enjoy the coffee we make for them. It’s a passion we also want to pass on.”

Sixth form in the West at last

Almost 30 years after a secondary school first opened in West Swindon, the area now has a 6th form for young people to continue their education in the area in which they live. Eighty 16 to 18 year olds started their further education at Lydiard Park Academy in early September and this number will grow to 250 in later years. “It was the best week of my teaching career as we welcomed the first intake,” said head of the sixth form Gail Davies. “We have created fantastic independent facilities within the academy for our older students, but they have been learning quickly about the high expectations and greater pace of teaching and learning. “They have to take more responsibility for their learning and there is a group responsibility for keeping the Sixth Form Centre tidy.” She added that the students won’t have a lot of free time as the amount of tutor contact and supervised study will be high to prepare them to apply for places at top universities.

Important school places dates Parents whose children will be going to primary or secondary school for the first time in September 2015 are advised by Swindon Borough Council that they need to apply for school places. The council is also taking applications for places in Year 10 at the new University Technical College (UTC). This year, the council was able to give 92 per cent of applicants their first preference for primary schools, and 94.2 per cent for secondary schools. However, it is urging parents to make sure they put down a second

and third choice of school when they apply, in case their first choice is oversubscribed. The closing date for secondary school and UTC applications is 31 October 2014, and the deadline for primary school applications is 15 January 2015. Applications should be with the council’s admissions team by these dates. All applications received up to the deadline dates will be considered together using the same criteria – they are not dealt with on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Applications received after the dead-

line may significantly increase the risk of the council being unable to offer places for any of the preferred schools. Bishop Lee opens Tadpole Farm primary academy Redhouse Community Centre, where the new Church of England primary school academy for Tadpole Farm will be based until the middle of 2015, was completed and handed over two weeks earlier than expected in mid-August. It meant principal Jane Leo and her staff had plenty of time to prepare for the arrival of the first 68 children on 3 September. The first day will be remembered for the first ever whole school picture taken by Swindon Link - right - and a party in the afternoon. On Monday 8 September the Rt Revd Lee Rayfield, Bishop of Swindon, formally opened the academy after a blessing of the children and all involved with the academy. In his address Bishop Lee, carrying a shepherd’s crook as a symbol of God’s leadership and support, said: “Like Sarah and Abraham in the Bible you are all on a journey, starting from here, with your final destination being the new school. You can be hopeful and trusting because people are going with you, and we pray that God will help us along the way.” Commenting on the new school St Andrew’s parish vicar the Venerable Caroline Baston said: “This is the eleventh school to be opened in our parish which has an unusually high proportion of young families. It’s a lovely building and the principal Jane Leo is stunning.”

Acknowledging that the construction of the Redhouse Community Centre was accelerated by the need for a temporary school, Cllr Vera Tomlinson said: “The build was about to start when we were approached to see if the centre could accommodate the school before the permanent building is completed in the Tadpole Farm development. The anticipated move date is in May next year, but they can have the community centre building for as long as they need.” Jane Leo said: “It has been a wonderful few weeks getting everything ready and welcoming children and parents for the first time. “The construction team from Willmot Dixon have been amazing as we’ve gone from sketch drawing to a fully functional building in just 20 weeks. Public views on the future of children’s centres can be submitted until Friday 3 October and will be discussed by Swindon Council’s cabinet on 22 October. Facebook to Freshbrook. Couple get together after 25 years

A couple who had not seen each other since their college days and bopping to 70s disco have started a new life together in Freshbrook. Maggie Kayes, 55, and Chris Buckingham, 54, knew each other when training to be chefs at Farnborough College in their late teens, and then working in the catering department at Frimley Park Hospital. They were part of a group of friends who used to go to Raggamuffins club in Camberley, but other jobs and partners came along and they lost touch until last year. Maggie’s partner died in 2006 and in April last year her daughter Natalie persuaded her to join Facebook to rediscover friends. Very quickly she made contact with Chris who had moved to North Swindon. It was attraction at first contact on Facebook followed by a reawakened love when they met, said Maggie. “It was really wonderful to meet each

other again. We were a bit more grey and had a little more weight, but the same heart was there; we had so much in common.” Chris added: “We just picked up on conversations from our teenage years. We hit it off straight away and we knew getting together was absolutely the right thing to do. Our four grown up children were a bit taken aback at first but they’ve been really happy for us.”

Within weeks of meeting wedding plans were being made and Chris and Maggie tied the knot at St Leonard’s Church, Stanton Fitzwarren on 30 August before a long honeymoon in Singapore and Australia where Maggie has family. She said: “It was such a lovely wedding day with friends. I was so pleased that my dad was well enough to come to Swindon and walk me down the aisle and make a speech for us.”

Archbishop impressed by treasures in the church in the park The visit to Swindon by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby on 13 September was marked by his wide eyed wonder during a quick tour of St Mary’s Church in Lydiard Park. The Archbishop came to the town as part of a three day tour of the Diocese of Bristol. At Lydiard House he met local clergy for breakfast and prayers before cutting a ribbon to launch Heritage Weekend which celebrates architecture and culture across England. He then said a prayer with people taking part in the annual Ride & Stride to raise money for the National Churches Trust. In St Mary’s Paul Gardner gave Archbishop Justin a history lesson about the St John family who owned Lydiard Park until the mid-20th Century and described the almost unique polyptych, which consists of 15 painted folded panels illustrating the St John family tree. The rarely seen double panel depicting the St John family in full size was opened specially. Paul, chair of St Mary’s Building & Conservation Appeal, said the artwork was created by William Larkin, court painter to King James I, in 1615. “Sir John St John bought a baronetcy from the King, so the polyptych was a no-expenses spared selfie of its day.” Paul also pointed out that St Mary’s has been a place of worship for 1,000 years and remarkably the monuments and artwork survived the Civil War when church decoration was destroyed across the land.

Mini-farm provides home for hens Rescued battery hens are enjoying life outside a cage for the first time at Studley Grange Butterfly World, near Wroughton, and helping children to learn about healthy eating at the same time. When the brood of ex-battery hens arrived at Studley Grange they had never walked on grass, never seen daylight and never enjoyed finding insects in the open air. They had lost all their feathers and were frightened of humans. After weeks of care, they are now enjoying freedom and roaming their grassy paddock. Their feathers are regrowing, they are really friendly and they are laying lots of delicious, healthy free range eggs. Visitors can meet the hens, find out how they are looked after, help to feed them and collect eggs from the nesting boxes. The free range eggs are then available to buy. 22

New Museum and Art Gallery:

A promise that might come true at last Swindon Council is focussing on the next chapter in the town’s artistic and cultural story – and wants as many people as possible to complete an online survey by the end of October. The current plan is to construct a brand new Museum and Art Gallery on the car park site outside the Magistrates’ Court, to form a major component of a town centre cultural quarter stretching from the Central Library to the Wyvern Theatre. The idea of a cultural quarter has been in town centre development proposals for many years and in 2005 the council made fifty promises to the people of Swindon, number 27 being concerned with finding a new home for the Swindon Modern Art Collection - only about ten per cent of which can be displayed in the current art gallery at Apsley House in Old Town. On 13 September, Apsley House marked 50 years since the art gallery extension opened. Almost £20m is required for the development, the bulk of which hopes to be funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and donations from private benefactors. Commenting on the significance of the proposals, council Commissioner for Leisure, Libraries and Culture Helen Miah said: “This is an amazing opportunity for Swindon to try and change the cultural perception of the town. “We want people to tell us more about the exhibits and the stories that they would like to see presented. This will help to determine the size of the facility and the number of galleries and education rooms. “We’ve already had some really good feedback. The survey deadline has been extended to the end of October, and the more responses we can get the better.” Swindon Council leader David Renard added: “The Heritage Lottery Fund requires the council to show that we’re serious about culture and heritage by demonstrating our commitment through exhibitions and attracting new people to them. “The current exhibition organised by the Swindon in the Great War committee put on by local heritage organisations illustrates our commitment to working with local people. “But it’s a complicated project with many elements, not least the challenge of meeting the ongoing costs of operating a new museum. “We’re looking at different models, including setting up a management trust, but the project needs to be cost neutral. “If the bid is successful it would be 2018 at the earliest before we can start.” However independent heritage consultant Mike Pringle from Old Town

says there is some way to go before the people of Swindon are enthused about the prospect of a new museum and art gallery. “I’m really thrilled to see the council taking arts and culture seriously and they obviously really want to make this work, but the HLF need to understand the story behind a bid and have to be convinced that it has the widest possible support,” he said. “According to the council’s own ‘One Swindon’ plan, the aim of council policy is to: ‘help focus attention on outcomes local people think are most important and take away the responsibility for delivering those outcomes from the council alone.” “There is a Heritage Strategy Board overseeing the development of the new museum and art gallery project, but it is largely dealing with decisions already made within the corridors of the council. “Regrettably neither the Board nor the Swindon public are as engaged in the process as the HLF would want to see. COMMUNITY COMMUNICATIONS VIA VIDEO MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER Volunteers needed to sustain Swindon Viewpoint

Britain’s first successful and longest running community TV station celebrated its 40th year recently with a reunion of original staff at the town’s Goddard Arms - the place where the formative plans for the service were hatched in 1972.

The poor TV reception in the town meant a wide network of cable was laid in the late 1950s and 1960s which allowed local community communications services to be developed. In the early 1970s the government of the day licenced six local stations but did not allow cable owners EMI to carry advertising or sponsorship. Without commercial opportunities, EMI’s interest diminished over time and the channel was sold to a not-for-profit board of directors who secured funding from an experimental lottery scheme, which preceded the current National Lottery. Whilst Swindon Viewpoint closed down in the late 1980s, it now continues online where a fascinating repository of archive videos are to be found, along with coverage of contemporary events in the town. The gathering of past and current Viewpoint directors and staff looked at lessons from the past that could help shape the future. Martin Parry, the current chair said: “We wanted to use this reunion to establish how we might deploy everyone’s experience for the future. We feel community access media is more important than when we started. “The town is rapidly diversifying ethnically and socially and needs a central forum where it can communicate with itself using television. We believe our experience has helped us develop a model of community management that can best achieve that. “Community programming is a great way for people to get involved in local life, discover other people’s cultures and ways of living, and participate in shaping the future of their town. It’s a great asset for a town to have a TV service that is owned and operated by the local public and fully accessible to them”.

Swindon’s first prisoners of the Great War start 4 years of incarceration

A railway at war

Help from home gives comfort and hope On 22 November 1914 Allied troops declared victory in what would later be called the First Battle of Ypres, writes Frances Bevan of Swindon in the Great War. For Charles Haggard it was the end of his active service and the beginning of four years imprisonment. By the Autumn of that year it was obvious that the war would not be over by Christmas as Allied troops fought hard to secure the seaports and protect crucial supply lines. On 19 October the battle to hold the strategically important Belgian town of Ypres began with Swindon men present on the front line. On the eastern edge of the Polygon Wood German troops overwhelmed an isolated group of the Wiltshire Regiment on 24 October. Fierce fighting saw the 2nd Battalion sustain heavy losses and 100 men taken prisoner. Private Charles E. Haggard, a former fitter at GWR Works, was just one prisoner who would depend upon a group of volunteers back home in Swindon. What began as the committee to provide Comforts for the Troops of the Wiltshire Regiment soon developed into a volunteer workforce providing vital foodstuffs for Swindon men, surviving on cabbage soup and black bread in German PoW camps. The work of Mary Slade, Kate Handley

and their team of volunteers kept these men alive and also supported their families. The woman continued their work through the interwar period and to the end of the Second World War. The committee was not officially dissolved until 1946. Following the Armistice on 11 November 1918 the prisoners of war were released and left to find their own way home. Charles Haggard eventually arrived at 60 Stafford Street in January 1919. When his father opened the front door he failed to recognise his son who had barely survived the appalling conditions in the internment camps in Germany. After a few days rest Charles walked down to the Town Hall to register his return to Swindon. Three weeks later he dropped dead in Regent Street. Charles is buried in plot E7227 in Radnor Street Cemetery along with more than 80 other servicemen from the Great War who returned to Swindon but died as a result of their military service. Their graves are marked by an official Commonwealth War Grave headstone. The story of the prisoners of war and the work of Mary Slade’s committee are told in the Swindon in the Great War exhibition at the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery in Bath Road. The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 3pm.

Felicity Jones, assistant curator at STEAM said: “This exhibition follows the men who went to fight and also the men and women who continued to be employed by the Great Western Railway in many different roles. It gives visitors fascinating insight into how war changed forever the way of life of the GWR and its employees. “In a time of enormous change, women became the new workforce while the men were away fighting. From

munitions work, to transportation, including building specialist carriages, the railways had a major part to play.” • A new book, Wartime GWR, which tells the story of how the Great Western Railway was involved in both World Wars, has been published by Elaine Arthurs and Felicity Jones who are Assistant Curators at STEAM,. Complete with an impressive selection of large-scale images – many previously unpublished - readers are able to explore this important period in the GWR’s history. SWINDON BALLERINA MAKES THE NEXT STEP IN HER CAREER Seventeen year old hard-of hearing ballet student Hannah Sumner from Chiseldon has completed her year of training with English National Youth Ballet Company, and has started at Northern Ballet School in Manchester. Over the summer Hannah won gold in Senior Choreography at Canterbury Dance Festival as well as the overall choreography trophy. She was also the first dance act to win at Wanborough’s Got Talent with a self-choreographed contemporary piece to the music from the film Dead Silence. Hannah wears hearing aids in both ears and admits to finding it difficult to hear the music sometimes – especially when she has a cold or when tap dancing. Looking forward to her move north

Hannah said: “It was quite a hectic year juggling AS levels and travelling backwards and forwards to London. At least in Manchester I’ll be living in halls of residence close to the school. I’ll be able to dance every single day and have time for myself in the evenings.” Reflecting on her time at the English National Ballet Company she said: “It was an incredible experience. I met so many people and performed on the main stage at the Move It dance convention “We also did a flash-mob type performance at Westfield in Shepherds Bush.” Unfortunately Hannah just missed the chance to take part in the opening ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games because she had an exam.

Let’s Loop Swindon Needs Volunteers Rotary Community Corp and hearing loss charity Hearing Link are appealing for volunteers to assist in Let’s Loop Swindon, a project dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of hearing loops in public buildings. Explaining the project, hearing aid wearer and member of the Let’s Loop Swindon steering group, Kayleigh Williams from Toothill said: “Swindon is one of ten towns participating in the project nationwide. We are looking for volunteers to help audit hearing loop systems in places like pharmacies, doctors’ surgeries, shopping centres and job centres. We want to help employees and organisations understand how to operate hearing loops and to make sure the loops in public buildings are working effectively.” Hearing loops provide magnetic signals that are picked up by hearing aids set to the T setting. They eliminate background noise and enable the hearing aid user to hear more clearly.

Commenting on the importance of hearing loops Kayleigh said: “In pharmacies for example it’s important to be able to hear the instructions for taking medication. Without it there’s a risk of getting mixed up and this could be harmful to health.” Unfortunately Kayleigh has experienced situations where hearing loops have not been switched on, or are covered in dust and clearly have never been used. She said: “Lots of people don’t know how to use loops. The Let’s Loop Swindon project aims to help staff learn more about how they work.” Both hearing and hard-of hearing volunteers are required, and will typically work in pairs to audit different premises. Tree Gives Life To History

TURNER IN THE WEST COMES TO SWINDON

The Mulberry Tree in the back garden of the Richard Jefferies Museum near Coate Water provided inspiration to children and families gathering beneath its 180 year old branches over the summer holiday - just as it inspired Richard Jefferies in the 19th Century, writes Frances Bevan. The tree was planted by James Luckett Jefferies, farmer at Coate and the father of celebrated poet and nature writer Richard Jefferies who called it the Tree of Life. Jefferies senior was just 15 years old when he first took over the running of the farm in 1835 with his elder sister Fanny. After a brief American adventure, James returned to his childhood home where he married Elizabeth Gyde in 1844 and set about making his mark on the farm and gardens. He built the pig-sties and the ha-ha wall and planted many of the fruit trees and shrubs which remain today such as the large Holm oak, and, of course the mulberry tree. He spent over 20 years working the farm which he inherited from his grandfather in 1868. Unfortunately a clause in the bequest that he should pay a legacy to each of his sisters totalling more than £1,000 proved insurmountable and in 1877 James was forced to sell the property. It passed through several different owners until Swindon Corporation bought it in 1926 for about £2,000. A charitable trust established to run the museum has started restoration work on the house and the garden. This was the first summer of activity and to celebrate the tree came into flower, an unusual occurrence. “Our summer programme was a huge success,” said Hilda Sheehan, museum education officer . “We had people coming week after week with their families, babies all the way up to elders. Swindon Museum and Art Gallery welcomes an intimate touring show displaying eight works by JMW Turner in October. The watercolours held in collections in the west of England, span the artist’s career and include views of Bath, Bristol and surrounding areas. Best known for his large paintings, this exhibition shows off Turner’s formidable skills in a different medium; most were painted when he was a young man. The exhibition - Turner: Watercolours from the West - shows a side to the artist that is not often seen. It is the result of a new partnership between Swindon Museum & Art Gallery and four other museums and art galleries in Bristol, Bath and Cheltenham called Frameworks.

Swindon is the second stop on a four venue tour. Sophie Cummings, Swindon Museum and Art Gallery’s Curator, is delighted that works by such a renowned artist will be displayed in the town. “Turner’s watercolours are his freshest and most spontaneous works. They are light, delicate and bring the beautiful scenery of the South West and Wales to life.” Alongside the Turners, Swindon Museum and Art Gallery will be displaying art from its own collection including works by John Piper and Graham Sutherland. These artists could be regarded as the modern heirs to Turner, as their work celebrates the beauty and diversity of the British landscape, including the rocky hillsides and waterfalls found in some of Turner’s pictures. Brave New World artist makes an impact in Purton The work of two extraordinary men of the 20th century, one a writer and the other an artist, is having an impact on present day arts development in Purton. Author Aldous Huxley is famous for his seminal pre-war book Brave New World. But the late Leslie Holland, the artist who designed the cover of the first edition, has an equally fascinating past; and royalties from his iconic illustration have supported the design of a website for Purton Artists Society. Leslie was a founder member of the society after he moved to the village with his family in 1964. But today’s benefactors are receiving the proceeds of his work from 30 years previously when Leslie entered a competition to illustrate the cover of a book that became a sensation around the world. His son Matt Holland, who lives at Lower Shaw Farm in West Swindon, said his father, who died in 2005, submitted his design in 1930 after publishers of Huxley’s book invited artists to enter a competition for cover images. “Dad was in his early twenties and newly out of art college. Entrants were told the book was about the future, and they were given a working title. “Dad submitted a very cutting edge modernist design in one colour and shading, incorporating Lindbergh’s aircraft making the first trans-Atlantic flight. His design won! Neither Dad or the publisher had any inkling that Huxley’s futuristic work, set in 2540AD, or, according to the book itself, ‘632 After Ford’, a work of fiction that predicted sleep learning and recreational sex, would become an iconic work of literature.” The 21st Century connection emerged in 2005 when Matt’s daughter Anna, a student at the University of Oxford, spotted a display of posters of famous book covers in Blackwells’ bookshop window. Even though there was no artist credit, only a note to say that the artist was unknown, she recognised The Brave New World design as the work of her grandad. Closer examination revealed a faint signature. She told her father and he contacted the poster’s publishers, Bookish Designs. They were delighted to hear from the artist’s family and told Matt that his father’s poster was the

Matt Holland with a poster of his father’s first edition cover most popular of the 12 designs they were selling. “Dad had tried to earn a living as a freelance artist in the pre-war period, but it appears that commercial art was not for him,” said Matt. “Explaining himself, he was inclined to say things like: ‘I will not prostitute my art for commercial gain.’ “He also said that he saw his ability to draw as a gift; that art for him was a way of looking closely at life and celebrating it, not as way of making money. My mother Gerty was a nurse and not only ran the home but also earned much of the money that kept our family of eight. Dad worked all right. He was a very industrious man, but mostly in market gardening and other manual jobs, using all his free moments to draw and paint. Later in his life, when we moved to Purton in the mid ‘sixties, he did make art a profession and a livelihood as a teacher at Prior Park Prep School in Cricklade. “But, while for most of his life art and money did not go together for Dad, he would be pleased now that the royalties from the reproduction of his Brave New World design on posters and T-shirts are helping members of Purton Artists’ Society, young artists, and other similar causes.” Purton based artist Gordon Dickinson said: “The society is very grateful to Leslie’s executors for supporting Purton Society over the next five years. We are particularly keen to encourage younger people to join us and the bequest is helping us set up a competition with Bradon Forest School with art vouchers as prizes.” The Brave New World poster will be on display with work by present members at

When New College A level student Thomas Hawkins from Grange Park learned of his cousin’s cancer diagnosis he set about doing something practical to help by raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. As well as preparing for his A levels Thomas organised a Three Peaks Challenge involving five other students and four adults to join him in the adventure. It’s a good start and we’ll be planning another work day. Hopefully more residents will join in.”

Swindon Climate Action Network, SCAN, is again joining forces with Queen’s Park community garden to hold a free apple day on Saturday 11 October, 10am to 3pm. Everyone is invited to bring apples (and pears) gathered from their garden, or perhaps a neighbour’s, and turn them in to fresh juice by turning a hand cranked press. Steve Litchfield, co-chair of SCAN said: “Apple day is a great celebration of what nature does for us and Queen’s Park community garden is a lovely secret space right in the town centre to get together. The team has prepared outline plans for the overall development and is working on the necessary environmental impact and traffic assessments. Submission of the plan to Swindon Council is expected in March 2015 and subject to agreement, the design team will produce the detailed scheme. Moirai has had discussion with the council on the draft form of the plans which were seen at an earlier public consultation. There will be another public consultation when the detail is available. The major development will include a ski slope, a performance arena, ten-pin bowling, a cinema, with associated cafés, restaurants, bars and a hotel. An extension of the Oasis to provide facilities for extreme sports is proposed. Discussions with potential tenants for premises in the development are already making good progress, with negotiations for an operator of the ski

slope at an advanced stage. It’s all calm at Blunsdon ahead of play-off push

Robins owner Terry Russell tells Link Sport the club is in good shape off the track AN AIR of calm has washed over the Abbey Stadium this year as Swindon Robins prepare to embark on their third consecutive appearance in the Elite League play-offs. Last season’s run to the post season was overshadowed by financial issues which came to a head on August 22 2013, when the club’s riders only had one bike each in the pits for a meeting against Belle Vue in protest against the near £50,000 they were owed between them. Loyal sponsors Pebley Beach and Excalibur stepped in to save the club and, a little over 12 months on, things could not be more different with every rider up to date on their pay packets.

Things are still tight and every penny has to be fought for, as is the case at every speedway club in the country, but there is an air of calm around the club as they prepare to begin their third-straight play-off campaign on Monday, September 29. “The season has been calmer all the

way through, there’s not been riders turning up with one bike and there’s not been any rumours or stories coming out of the club because we’ve kept bang on,” owner Terry Russell told Link Sport. “The riders are up to date and aren’t waiting more than seven days to be paid, there are no issues there, and I think around the town we are getting a good name. “The club is stable and the stadium rent is up to date, all the riders are being paid, but it’s still tight and a bit of a struggle because there are so many things affecting it. “The weather gets to us so badly but there’s nothing we can do. People talk about covers but they can only save you if you get the right type of cover and can only save you from what comes during the day.” “If you have those covers down all day and take it off just for racing then the track would be too dry, so it’s hard. We delayed a meeting by 15 minutes after a downpour

recently, did some work and after four or five races it came good.” A large amount of Russell’s focus is aimed at the planned new stadium at Blunsdon, with the club’s owner fully expecting work to be underway when the sport returns for the 2015 season. “I’ve had an email from the owners of the stadium recently and we are going to meet this month to look at the plans, which have obviously been changed about,” he said. “We’re looking at very much being on the go and it will be well on the go by the time we come back for next season. “I’m looking forward to a brand new facility although I’m sure lots of people will hold great memories and miss the old one because so much has happened here. “We will get a track in to the design that we want and a nice facility for the riders in the pits and the changing rooms, although I must say they are quite nice now.”

It might not be over yet for Lyle VETERAN Swindon Wildcats netminder Stevie Lyle has hinted that the 2014/15 campaign may not be his last on the ice after all. Lyle, who is widely expected to retire at the end of the upcoming English Premier League season, suggested to Link Sport that, if he remains injury-free over the coming months, there may be a chance he could reconsider his decision. Ahead of Cats’ first EPL game of the season at Manchester Phoenix, the Welshman was coy when asked about his future. He said: “Right now I think it is (my last season). It’s quite a long time and it does take a toll on your body. We’ll see how it goes. I didn’t have any bad injuries last year and if I can have another season like that then hopefully I can speak to Ryan at the end of the season and sort something else out. “This season I’m just looking to have a good season – as a team

and for myself, just in case it is the last one. “I’m definitely looking forward to it. It’s great to see the guys; you don’t see them for four or five months. I’m going to take it every weekend as it comes and try to enjoy it. There’s no pressure on myself, I just want to enjoy the season and see where that leads us.” Meanwhile, Lyle has stated that Wildcats should not start setting themselves season targets until the campaign reaches its halfway point. He said: “It all depends on how the team gels and you need a bit of luck. If we were to get one or two injuries, teams like Telford and Guildford have players ready to step in. Maybe Swindon don’t. It will be hard to get into the top four but every season everyone wants to break in there and I think we should take every game as it comes every weekend, see where we are at Christmas and maybe set some of our goals for the season.”

Wildcats take the pro approach RYAN Aldridge is hoping Swindon Wildcats’ professional approach will once again pay dividends this season. Having traditionally held training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursday, Cats switched to Thursday and Friday sessions late last season which coincided with the club’s run to the EPL play-offs. The new system has been carried into the new campaign, limiting the time Cats players spend travelling, which Aldridge hopes will pay off as the club go for EPL glory.

For Thomas, the sessions did their job in providing plenty of inspiration. He said: “It was quite good. We met the athletes and they inspired us and showed us how we can take our sport even further.”

Academy links up with Town to create perfect education for young footballers SWINDON Town and Lydiard Park Academy have teamed up to move the Robins’ youth development centre to the school. On September 22, the Robins’ academy officially moved to Lydiard, with over 130 children coached each week in age groups ranging between under sevens and under 16s. Link Sport understands Town have invested around £15,000 in bringing the school’s playing fields up to a high standard, and the club will pay a monthly rent to use the space to run their sessions for the region’s talented young footballers.

Mondays will be a whole day here – we can tap into the school’s facilities and we’re looking forward to that project,” he said. “We’ve spent a lot of money on the pitches. A lot of work has gone into it and we’re getting there now. Everything is solely ours now, so it’s better for us that we’re here. We’ve done a deal with the school, it’s a fantastic deal for both parties. We’re hoping that we’ve planned so much that it will only enhance their education, the project and the academy.”
