The 2009 plan for 2,000 homes at Pry Farm to the north of Ridgeway Farm, (west of Oakhurst), has been revived and it is possible that developers could propose an even larger number of houses, closing the gap between Swindon and Purton, and even Cricklade is under threat. Securing planning permission on land development has become easier for house builders. Most of all, we want to remove the risk of accidents caused by inappropriate use of the roads.” Swindon Council leader Cllr David Renard said the council would be applying for a traffic order to ban HGVs on Queen Elizabeth Drive, but believes a bus service has to be maintained. “A large number of people live in or close to the present bus route and I believe it’s our duty to ensure they have the option of accessing a bus service. “I’m certainly willing to review the state of the road and consider what investment is required to make it safer but I wouldn’t support a total removal of buses from that part of Taw Hill.” Responding to complaints in support of the campaign Thamesdown Transport managing director Paul Jenkins said: “We would like to see the road widened, but that is a matter for the highway authority and in the meantime we consider it safe for our use. Unlike most small vehicles, buses are driven by professional drivers. Safety is our highest priority and we would not operate along a road where the risks were unacceptable.” 14

GWH calls for artistic youngsters Great Western Hospital have launched a competition to get young people to come up with ideas for decorating their new children’s Emergency Department. Building work began to completely refurbish that part of the hospital in August, ten years after it first opened. The new design will mean that children will have their own waiting and treatment area with private cubicles. The aim is to provide families with a welcoming and child-friendly environment, away from the busy general waiting area for adults. How to enter Children must be aged between five and sixteen years old to enter the competition which must be submitted on A4 paper. Images should be from a favourite book or TV programme or film, a favourite animal or sport. All artwork must have the name of the child, their age and contact details of their parents/guardian, along with a brief explanation about their drawing. Any work submitted without these details will not be entered. It is not possible to return any of the artwork submitted. The closing date is Friday 18 October 2013 and winners will be announced in December.

New education centre for young adults with special needs

South Swindon MP Robert Buckland opened The Learning Centre, a unique new provision for young people aged 19 to 25 years set up by the Uplands Educational Trust. Based in a new facility on Stratton Road, Swindon, the centre specialises in helping young adults with special needs acquire life skills so that they can help themselves. After finishing school, many young adults with special needs are unable to attend mainstream colleges and are faced with two options. Either cease their education and stay at home with their family or travel over 300 miles from Swindon to take up residential

placements because they are in such short supply. The centre has been inspired by Uplands headteacher Jackie Smith who said: “We listened to the frustrations of parents and carers of young special needs adults living in Swindon and the surrounding areas and knew that opening a 19 to 25 Learning Centre was something the Uplands Educational Trust had to do.

Dance company seeking sponsors Ovation Dance Company is an adult dance performance group directed by Sarah Josh-Corcoran. Businesses in Swindon town centre are delighted that their shops are now on Google - the king of search engines - where customers can now take a tour of their stores from the very comfort of their own homes. The photographs, uploaded by Google, allow viewers to take a 360° virtual tour of the inside of the stores - which aims to give the businesses more publicity as an extended variation of Google Street View. The beauty of the extended version is that Google Street View can now be linked to the inside of a business - inviting potential customers ‘in’ to the virtual tour of many different stores. Businesses that are already on board with the

What’s been happening in Swindon town centre... Last Night of the Proms Proves a Hit for the Sixth Year Running! One of the most popular annual events to be held at Wharf Green definitely didn’t disappoint this year, as we were joined by over 200 people to watch the fantastic performances on the Big Screen on Saturday 7th September. Yet before the live feed of the performances went underway, there was much fun to be had with some singing and dancing along with Nathan Jones and His All Stars Jazz Band; including some Jazz and Swing classics that really got everyone in the mood for the musical evening! The show itself featured some incredible musical performances and the atmosphere was electric as the evening entailed great amounts of flag-waving, applause and singing along with the artists on screen - celebrating Great Britain as a nation through the power of music. Totally green and active prize for North Swindon primary In June Oakhurst Primary School’s Tranquillity Garden was declared the regional winner of the Totally Active category in the Young People’s Trust for the Environment Total Green School Awards. The garden features a series of Peace Poles, produced by each class during their October Peace Week last year, and depicts the hand prints of every pupil in the school. Original ideas for the garden were submitted by children and Paul Watermeyer Landscapes in association with Grassroots Landscaping developed them into a beautiful garden which won the school £500 and a certificate to mark the achievement. Expressing his delight with the garden, headteacher Dale Burr said: “I am extremely pleased. Unlike the camps at Stratton, Lydiard Millicent and elsewhere in Wiltshire, the Lydiard Park camp was a working hospital, where sick and injured German prisoners received treatment from local nurses and German medical officers. When they recovered, they were put to work in local factories, on farms, road crews and logging parties. The staff at Lydiard House knew that there was a fascinating story to tell about Swindon’s recent history, but until recently had little information about it - until Elaine NewcombeJones made contact in 2011 with an amazing collection of documents. Elaine’s father was John Bailey who was born to a German father and an Austrian mother. His mother later married a British army sergeant-major and John adopted his step-father’s name. He acted as an interpreter at several POW Camps in Britain, but his humble manner belied his experiences in the early years of the war running weapons for the Belgian

One visitor remembered German prisoner Toni Schnoode billeted on a farm in Wroughton who used to construct model ships in bottles, which he sold to local people. Another recalled Italians, wearing wooden clogs, working on the farms between Wootton Bassett and Lyneham and shouting ‘Bongiorno!’ to passers-by. The exhibition at Lydiard House runs until 23 November, open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm, or to 4pm in November. Youth opportunities The Emerge Youth & Community Project is based at Holy Trinity Church, Shaw village centre. It has been running for five years, staffed mainly by volunteers with a paid youth and community work manager.
