Let the memory of the games help you become a community maker Long after the glitter and glitz of London 2012 has faded, a lasting memory remains for those who attended and the millions who watched the spectacle on television, writes Jo Banks of Volunteer Centre Swindon. During those few short weeks of the Olympics and the Paralympics, there was such a positive atmosphere, a tangible sense of goodwill, people got on, spoke to each other, shared stories and made friends. In essence the nation surprised itself by discovering a great sense of togetherness. At the heart of this were the Games Makers, thousands of ordinary people who, by giving of their time, created this special feeling which radiated from London 2012. Community is something we all share in and belong to. But it doesn’t just happen, communities are made by the people in them. For example a community centre is just a building, an empty shell, without people to to use it or run it. Ordinary people who, like the Games Makers, give a little of their time to help out, get involved and by so doing, create a benefit for all.
Being a community maker is something everyone can do. No special skills are required, just a willingness to get stuck in and give a little bit of time. Thousands already do this across Swindon. So, where do YOU start if you’ve been inspired by the Games Makers to get involved? Your local community centre or library is a good place to go for ideas. Offer to help out at the school fete or sports club, a jumble sale, a boot sale or perhaps you have a skill you can share with others. The possibilities are endless, and you don’t need to commit your whole life; giving just an hour or so can make a huge difference. You may not change the world but you might change your community. College October open day New College Swindon is celebrating fantastic exam results at a school leavers’ open day on 6 October. At A Level, students achieved an impressive 98.3 per cent overall pass rate, which will stand them in good stead for a bright future, despite increased competition for jobs and university places. Rachel Greenhill, from Sparcells, achieved an A* in Chemistry and As in Advanced Maths, Psychology, Biology, and Extended Project. She will be going to the University of Southampton to take an undergraduate masters in Chemistry. She said: “I am so pleased with my results. I have found New College to be great fun, with really good teaching.” This year GCSE lear ners achieved an outstanding overall pass rate of 99.8% across a wide range of subjects, including Samuel Godding, who achieved an A* in Mandarin Chinese. Ice hockey academy players join West Swindon school
In an ice breaking development for sports and education in Britain, a team of players from the new Okanagan Ice Hockey Academy based at Link Centre have started school at Lydiard Park Academy.

All are attending Lydiard Park Academy (LPA), except two already established at Nova Hreod and The Ridgeway. At LPA the pupils follow the national curriculum but their timetable is tailored to allow ice hockey training from 8.15am to 9.30am and they are brought to school by minibus to start classes at 10.15am.
Academy headteacher Clive Zimmerman said he was delighted that the players had arrived. “This is a very exciting opportunity for us. Partnerships with sports clubs to develop the best talent are exactly what we have been aiming at. The boys are highly motivated to achieve their sports potential and in their academic studies.” Okanagan manager Steve Nell said the young people are being given a wonderful opportunity. “The chance to train together intensively every morning, whilst attending a

Helen joined Tregoze as a teacher in 1997, after 10 years with British Forces’ schools in Germany. She said: “From the moment I walked through the door I knew this was the school for me. It oozed happiness and contentment.” In 2004 Helen took over as headteacher. At Drove she replaces Nick Capstick, who has been made executive head of the White Horse School Federation of Drove, Tregoze, Croft, Nyland Campus, Rodbourne Cheney, Moredon and Mountford Manor schools. Looking forward to the joint projects and sports activities, Helen said: “The federation schools work together very closely, so it’s like
moving from one classroom to another for me. On our trip to Brussels in June we had pupils from Drove, Tregoze and Mountford Manor and you wouldn’t believe they were from three separate schools.” Drove is double the size of Tregoze and has a huge multicultural intake, which Helen is excited about. She said: “Children are very accepting and work together to carry the torch for multi-cultural interaction in society. My challenge is to create more opportunities to further this across the town.” Helen Tudor has become joint headteacher with Claire Bowen, both of whom joined Mrs Swanson as newly qualified teachers.

Fidelma Meehan also held a Tranquility Zone for mums whilst staff and centre volunteers looked after their children. Butterflies offers a programme of weekly activities including open Stay and Play groups, a popular parenting group, a single parents’ group, and Bumps to Babes for mums-to-be throughout their pregnancy until their baby is moving independently. Play Together provides support to parents who are feeling a bit low, or who find their children’s behaviour challenging. and children in their own homes. There are over 920 families known to the children’s centre, with up to 20 new ones registering every week. The 1000th family who registers will receive a pack of goodies for adults and children. However tough decisions have to be made in the current economic climate. Butterflies manager Tanya said: “We are delighted that 98 per cent of feedback we receive describes our service users as very satisfied with what we provide. “But following the spending review our focus needs to ensure that whilst we remain accessible to all, with our groups such as stay and play, we have to offer specific support to those families who need it most. the bigger picture Public asked to identify ‘mystery images’
Rare and fragile aerial photos of the South West from the Aerofims Collection have been conserved and digitised by English Heritage and the Royal Commissions on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and Wales. Over 15,000 images taken from 1919 to 1953 can now be viewed online. The Aerofilms Collection is a unique and important archive of over one million aerial photographs taken between 1919 and 2006. Its chronological and geographical coverage is superb and documents the face of Britain during a period of intense and unparalleled change. The photographs were acquired for the nation in 2007 when Aerofilms was facing financial difficulties. With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Foyle Foundation, English Heritage and the Royal Commissions the images are now freely available online at www. britainfromabove.org.uk The website features a high degree of interactivity and is designed to encourage wide public participation. Users can download images,
customise their own themed photo galleries, share personal memories, and add information to enrich the understanding of each of the images. Viewers are also invited to identity the locations of a number of ‘mystery’ images that have left the experts stumped. By the end of the project in 2014, 95,000 pictures will be available online.

Companies still operating in the town such as Pressed Steel Fisher (now BMW) and Arkells Brewery will also be featured. The free event on Saturday 6 October, 9.30am to 4pm, takes place in the Reading Room at Swindon Central Library, Regent Circus. All ages are welcome.

Toothill GP Dr Peter Swinyard has been voted the twenty-ninth of the 50 most influential doctors in the UK according to Pulse magazine’s annual poll. This is in recognition of his role as chair of the Family Doctor Association, and his tireless efforts to encourage GPs to engage constructively with the Government’s NHS reforms. Dr Swinyard, who runs the Phoenix Practice, is a champion of GP-led commissioning and small practices which are managed single-handedly. Speaking to The Link in 2011 he said: “GPs have keen entrepreneurial abilities, and are accustomed to managing risk, which we do multiple times each
day with every patient that enters our surgery. We are the only practitioners to take a holistic view of the individual in their particular context. It makes sense that GPs commission the appropriate level of clinical care for their patients.” However, while he is a keen supporter of the reform principles, he is concerned by the way the changes have been implemented. Expressing the significance of the changes Dr Swinyard said: “This is the first, and possibly the last, time GPs have the potential to influence the direction of patients’ care, and offer a patient-centred service strengthened by the continuity of relationships with social care.” To minimise the risk of leaving

Countdown to Christmas starts now! It may only be October, and it probably feels like yesterday we were enjoying the amazing Olympic summer, but, like it or not, Christmas is on its way. And inSwindon BID already have exciting plans in place to make this festive season the most enjoyable yet. Last year’s celebrations included a wide range of exciting attractions in and around town including the incredible Lights Switch On and, of course, the odd visit from the man himself to our special Grotto in the Brunel Centre. That’s not forgetting the numerous celebrity visits, with famous faces as diverse as Dr Hilary Jones, Keith Chegwin and Swindon Town manager Paolo Di Canio all paying visits to the town centre. While specific details of this year’s plans are being kept firmly under wraps, it’s safe to say that inSwindon BID will be making this Christmas one to remember. The explosive Christmas Lights Switch On will officially kick off the festive season in late November, before we enjoy the enchanting Festival of Light Parade as we move closer to the big day. Our Christmas Market is also set to grace Canal Walk and Santa’s Grotto will be another festive fixture for children to enjoy in the Brunel Centre. And of course, Swindon will be

Paralympics Gallery As if the London 2012 Olympic whirlwind wasn’t enough excitement for one summer, the Paralympics continued this year’s sporting extravaganza in style. And as was the case with the main Games, Swindon town centre provided unrivalled coverage of the action from the capital, as the world’s elite disabled athletes competed on the international stage. Both Saturdays of the Games saw the return of the popular ‘have-a-go’ areas to Wharf Green, with hundreds of people turning out to enjoy sessions of Paralympic sports such as wheelchair basketball and boccia for free. It was a memorable end to a magical summer of sport, and we captured the best of the action from Swindon town centre…..

About us - What is inSwindon BID?
It may only be a month since its first day of trading, but Your Swindon Market is already proving extremely popular.
inSwindon BID is a Business Improvement District (BID), set up in 2007, which promotes, manages and co-ordinates operations and events in the town centre. It is mainly funded by the retailers and other businesses within the town centre area. In February 2012 the Company was successful in a renewal to secure the future of the company for a further five-years at a vote taken on by the Business Improvement District investors.
Based in Havelock Square, the market has seen huge numbers of shoppers taking in the wonderful variety of specialist produce on offer since its launch on 6th September. The market boasts around 25 stalls selling everything from speciality cheeses to organically grown fruit and vegetables, and exquisite glassware to authentic wines and ciders. The top quality products are flying off the shelves, with the market’s excellent value already proving popular with consumers. Stacey Jacobs, from Rodbourne, said: “I’ve been along to Your Swindon Market a couple of times and picked up a lot of quality stuff and not even spent that much money!

Swimming clubs with events booked at the pool have been advised of the new re-opening date and given help where possible to find alternative venues. Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Council cabinet member for leisure and strategic transport, said: “The length of the delay before reopening is very disappointing, and we’re sorry it’s going to be so long. “When the work started we had no reason to believe it wasn’t a straightforward re-tiling job, but what has since been discovered is serious, and it’s going to take time to put right. It appears that over 25 years of exposure to chlorinated water has deteriorated the concrete surround to the pool, underneath and out of sight. Normally this area is underwater but investigations have revealed serious corrosion to pipework and chemical damage to the concrete. “I’m afraid major maintenance to the pool in the late 1990s was not up to standard and we’re discovering the problems now.” The cost of the work to re-tile the pool was originally £75,000. The extra work to be done will at least double this amount. Louise Clayton, Swindon Dolphins head coach, said it was very frustrating that the club’s post Olympic Games aspirations had been derailed but acknowledged

Kim Oliver, who has 42 caps for England at fly half or centre, has been coaching Year 4s at Shaw Ridge Primary School over five sessions, ready for the tournament. Teacher and rugby coach Ben Everitt said he was delighted to have her on board. “Year 4 is a very good level to attract children into club mini-rugby. Share the fuel bill and benefit in the pocket big time
National Liftshare Week takes place from 1 to 5 October, and aims to promote car sharing to fill up some of the 38 million empty car seats being driven around the UK each rush hour. Since 2008 over 2,000 Swindon car drivers have signed up to www.carshareswindon.com which matches up drivers going the same way at the same time. Four commuters from North Swindon, Ian Fleming, Martin Oakes, Bob Dixon and Sandy Nicholson, now travel together to Newbury each day. Martin said: “I started sharing when my car broke a year ago and I actively sought people who were
heading my way. The car is fixed now so I can play my part in rotating the driving.” Bob has been car sharing for the past twelve years and even a move from Royal Wootton Bassett to Abbey Meads was no trouble. “I found there was a ready supply of car share partners driving from North Swindon to Newbury. Our employer has a shortage of car parking, and promotes car sharing to overcome the pressures, so it was easy to join the other three.” So, could car sharing be for you? There are a few downsides, for example an employer needs to recognise staff can’t stay late or may have to leave meetings promptly.

Car sharers also have to be flexible to fit in with the others. But they list a number of benefits including: • the social aspect. You chat about everything and anything, from cars to TV programmes, and you can get rid of any stress from that day at work before you arrive home; • the financial benefit. The trip to Newbury saves each driver 65 miles a day. Put it another way, between them about 1,000 miles a week or 46,000 miles a year. Each car sharer saves £12 a day when they don’t drive, a total of £2,000 annually on fuel, not counting wear and tear, depreciation and insurance for lower mileage; • greater safety. Car sharers report they drive more slowly with passengers on board, whilst the coordination of pick ups is offset by the fact there are three back up vehicles if the car owned by driver of the day breaks down.

Gary Cotterill of Swindon’s first response and first aid training company Wolverest provided first responder medical support for top cyclists, including Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins and world sprint champion Mark Cavendish, who took part in September’s Tour of Britain. His job was to follow the pack ready to deal with immediate injuries after a crash before the race doctor arrives. Racing at high speed in the closely bunched peloton meant daily accidents and lots of work for Gary who is a qualified combat medical technician with over 25 years frontline experience both in the military and NHS, including three years service in Iraq. The Tour covered 8 stages and 2,000 miles. Wolverest is a company with a difference whose entire staff profile is ex-military personnel, in many cases disabled. Birds on bikes brings women together
A new Swindon based mountain biking group, which meets on Facebook and gets together for ladies-only rides, now attracts a growing number of riders from across the South of England. Formed by Sarah Selwood, from Purton, right, the Facebook group exchanges women specific information about equipment, clothing and interesting places to ride and also provides a place to post details of group rides and spontaneous get-togethers. So what can we do over the winter to encourage more pollinating insects to visit our gardens? Kathy Hobson, secretary of Swindon Beekeepers’ Association, said: “Bees are the only pollinating insects that can survive the winter, feeding on the honey stores in their hives and keeping at a constant temperature. They are therefore the only insects available in large numbers to pollinate the Spring blossom of fruit trees.” This year beekeepers have begun to prepare their hives for winter earlier than usual because the torrential summer rain has led to a drop in honey production. Butterflies and the native bumble bee also play a crucial pollinating role, and thrive where there is an abundance of wildflowers. John Ball, a warden at Lydiard Park, founder of wildFlowers & Butterflies (FAB), and self-styled ‘guerrilla gardener,’ said: “My dream is for everyone to create gardens that are humming with the sound only our wildflower-loving bumble bees can make.” Both John and Kathy concur that
private gardeners and municipal planters do not always favour the kind of trees and plants that pollinating insects need. John added: “Much planting is of annuals which provide a spectacular display but only last one season. My aim is to turn people onto perennials which you can plant out in your garden and they’re there forever. “And now’s the time to start planning a bee and butterfly friendly garden, even if it is only a small area. You’ll be amazed by the busy activity next Spring and Summer.” To get started John recommends the yellow and orange birdsfoot trefoil for rockeries, and devils bit scabius with its small blue flowers for damper, semi-shaded areas. Bat woman leads North Swindon detection walk
The town’s bat population has been given a boost with the arrival of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust project officer Dani ‘Bat Girl’ Linton. With the award of a grant of £44,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the John Spedan Lewis Foundation, Dani has set up the Swindon Twilight Bat Project. The aims of the project is to encourage people to learn more about their nocturnal neighbours and allow them to investigate and study these mysterious and much maligned creatures.

Check-up time for bionic Louise
Following major brain surgery three months ago teenager Louise Fisher from Greenmeadow, who suffers with athetoid cerebral palsy, went for her first big check-up in mid-September at Evelina Hospital in London, to find out how she was responding to her new bionic equipment. Louise’s condition causes involuntary movements in her face, limbs and body, especially in response to sudden movements and noise. Would you walk over hot coals for charity?
That’s the question being asked by Prospect Hospice, who are inviting the public to take part in their Firewalk fundraiser at Alexandra House Hotel, Wroughton on 28 October. The event sees participants being sponsored to walk barefoot over burning embers, at temperatures that can reach almost 800 degrees centigrade. It also includes a Halloween Party for family and friends with traditional festive activities including apple-bobbing and a pumpkin carving competition. Last year’s firewalk raised nearly £8,000 towards the costs of the hospice, which looks after more than 1,800 patients and their families in the Swindon area every year.
